celebration this weekend we celebrate the first sunday of land as the people of god let us journey with each other we receive god's grace for this holy season of land let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god as you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned through my fault through my fault through my most previous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ of mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray grant almighty god through the earthly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the paneer from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramaian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord responsible psalm be with me o lord in my distress be with me o lord my distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me o lord in my distress upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me o lord in my distress they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against the stone on the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the dragon be with me o lord in my distress his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name but he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory with me o lord in my distress a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord please rise praise to you o christ king of eternal glory man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god praise to you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you [Music] filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture say you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand at the purpose of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord i praise you you lord jesus christ good evening brothers and sisters wise men say a good beginning is half the battle as we are celebrating the first sunday of lent i hope our beginning of land has been good i agree with the wise men say what the wise men say a good morning is a good sign for the day and so it is with our life too in general in singapore we know and we do it that we try to do our best since the very beginning since we are very young if we sleep it will take some extra efforts to climb back in your opinion in your experience which stage of education is the most important a lot of us are very feel very stressed when we have to go through psle or o level or a level most of us think that it is the university education that will decide our future but i would like to agree with an american author robert falcon who says this in his book he said all we really need to know in our life we learned it in kindergarten in kindergarten we are taught to first share everything play fair don't hate people put things back when you found them clean up your own mess don't take things that aren't yours say you're sorry when you hurt someone and when you go into the world watch out for the traffic hold hands and stick together all of us should have been experts in all these things because it was kindergarten thing brothers and sisters indeed a good beginning is very important in every aspect of our life and so it is too with our lantern journey in the first sunday of lent our readings give us the guideline the roadmap that we need that we can follow as we journey in this lantern journey first step we are invited to remember that what the lord has done for us we are not journeying aimlessly we are journeying into god first of all because god has shown us his power and his love for all of us moses in the first reading reminded the people the israelites what god has done for them when god brought them out of egypt god has proven his power and his favor for israelites and it is our part now to respond with the heart that longs for him second step saint paul reminded us that we what we do in our lengthen journey must not be merely for show we must mean what we say we must put love in all we do our faith should not be merely a live service our latin observances must come from our heart then the next step in the gospel we are taught how to care for ourselves and beware of temptations jesus himself showed us through the experience described in the gospel jesus is fully god and jesus is fully human as well he shares the same struggles and all kinds of temptations that we experience in our daily life the first temptation is about the temptation from within as jesus fasted for 40 days he experienced hunger he experienced temptation from his own personal need he was hungry it is a need that comes from his own body from within through this temptation he invites us to ask ourselves what do i need in my life what am i chasing in my life has my personal ambition pushed god aside jesus reminds us that really there's nothing that can satisfy us only god can the second temptation is the temptation from outside in jesus experience he was tempted with power and glory we too are tempted with many things around us money power fame status or anything that the world can offer us for a brief moment of good good feeling but if we are not careful these things can be a new god to us we will be their slaves because we will never feel enough we will be hungry for more every day when this happen slowly we will become greedy we may become ruthless or bitter and forget who we really are jesus reminds us in his own words that it is the lord alone that we must worship and serve then in the last temptation the devil tempted jesus with the same temptation of adam and eve which is the temptation to test god to manipulate god in our life it happens too consciously or unconsciously at times we may prefer god to be in our control we want him to do what we want him to do instead of following his plan but jesus literally tells us we must not put the lord our god to the test so brothers and sisters in summary the guide for our lenten journey three things the first thing always know who we are what we need and where we are going we must know what is within us the second step beware and be aware of the dangers and the temptations from outside and the last one don't put god to the test isn't it the same journey that we have the same advice that we have for all journey in our life when we are journeying for with couples who are getting married we always say work on the communication between two of you work on the core of the relationship between the husband and wife once we know what is within us what we once we know where we are going as a couple then we must be must be aware of the dangers and temptation from outside and the third one let god be god let god be the one leading us in the journey so brothers and sisters we are still in the beginning of our lenten journey let us begin well let us take good care of what's within us with our prayers we ask god to strengthen the foundation of our faith that we may always believe and we always cling on god and believe that we are his beloved children let us protect ourselves from all temptations from outside without fasting and arms giving and last but not least let god lead us in our journey we pray for a fruitful lenten journey for all of us let us be open for all kinds of surprises that god has for us in this journey [Music] um [Music] um [Music] um [Music] [Laughter] um [Music] let us rise to profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worldly the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we are clay holy holy holy holy god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore this gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when sapp was handed he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that
