from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord jesus went into the region of caesarea philippi and he asked his disciples who do people say that the son of man is they replied some say john the baptist others elijah still others jeremiah or one of the prophets he said to them but who do you say that i am simon peter said in reply you are the christ the son of the living god jesus said to him in reply blessed are you son of simon son of jonah for flesh and blood does not reveal this to you but my heavenly father and so i say to you you are peter and upon this rock i will build my church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it i will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the christ the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters i realized that as i grow older the more keys are entrusted for me to keep in my first year in the seminary we were living in dorms and so we have no keys but the following year we were already given our own rooms so we were given a key to our room i always carry that one key in my pocket and then later on i was also assigned as caretaker of the computers of our community in the seminary so i was given another key the key to the computer room so now i have two keys to keep and as more responsibilities are given to me more and more keys are entrusted and now that i am director of this cathedral i can no longer carry all the keys in my pocket in fact i have three key boxes to keep all the keys entrusted to me my dear brothers and sisters our first reading and our gospel this sunday both talk about keys in our first reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord gives a faithful man named eliakim the keys to the kingdom god said i will place the key of the house of david on eliakim's shoulder when he opens no one shall shout when he shouts no one shall open and in our gospel jesus himself entrusted the keys of the kingdom of heaven to peter after jesus called simon as peter which means rock and after jesus said upon this rock i will build my church upon you peter the rock i will build my church and jesus said i will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven [Music] whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven to eliakim and to peter keys were entrusted my dear brothers and sisters keys are symbols of authority and responsibility when keys are entrusted to you you are given the authority you are made responsible over something or are not just physical keys the keys that are used to open doors gates and things there are also keys that are not seen these are the responsibilities to administer an office or to take care of other people parish priest the new parish priest is entrusted with the most important key in the whole parish and that is the key to the tabernacle is symbolic of the role of the parish priest to take care of jesus who is present in the most blessed sacrament but also to take care of jesus who is also very much present in the community that he is tasked to shepherd of authority keys of responsibility but my dear brothers and sisters it is worthy to note that before jesus entrusted the keys of the kingdom of heaven to peter jesus first asked peter who do you say that i am and it is only after peter said you are the christ you are the messiah you are the son of the living god it is only after peter's confession of faith did jesus entrust to him the keys to the kingdom [Music] jesus [Music] my dear brothers and sisters authority and responsibility must always be exercised in the light of faith hindi predict [Music] authority and responsibility must always be exercised in the light of faith because without faith authority might be abusive without faith responsibility might become manipulation um [Music] that is why today my dear brothers and sisters let us pray especially this mass for all people entrusted with keys to lead us and to shepherd us let us pray for our church leaders for our pope pope francis for all our bishops for all the priests for all deacons and for our lay leaders in the church in our parish communities let us pray also for our government leaders both in the national and local levels let us pray for leaders in society let us pray for leaders in our workplaces in our offices in wherever we find ourselves in let us pray for leaders in the family let us pray for all people who are entrusted of serving and caring for others [Music] let us pray for them especially in this mass let us pray that they may use the authority god has given to them not to rule over others not to dominate and manipulate others they may they use the authority entrusted to them by god by serving others and let us also pray that they may exercise their authority in the light of faith may they exercise their authority also with wisdom and saint paul in our second reading today talks about the wisdom of god the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of god leaders must lead with the wisdom of god what does that mean leaders must lead with the mind of god for that is what faith is all about faith is our connectedness to god and when we are connected to god then we must act we must speak according to the wisdom [Music] and so we pray that our leaders may lead in faith but also with the wisdom of god you know my dear brothers and sisters this is one grace that i ask god every morning i ask god to give me the holy spirit the gift of wisdom from the holy spirit so that the words that will come out of my mouth so that the actions that i will do within the day so that every decision that i will make may always be in accordance with the plan and the dream of god [Music] and if we have the wisdom of god then we are sure that we are we are always doing the will of god but my dear brothers and sisters we do not only talk of people in authority people in positions of power because the truth is each one of us is entrusted with the key and that is to take care of each other you are responsible for your brother where is he and what was the question of cain he said am i my brother's keeper let us take care of each other because my dear brothers and sisters remember that anything we do always affects others that is why today let us ask who are the people entrusted to my care my family my spouse my siblings my relatives my friends my co-workers my neighbors my parishioners the members of our community who are the people entrusted to your care sin boy you might be the kathy and how do you exercise your authority and responsibility over them or do you abuse your power over others do you control and manipulate other people's lives or true to your faith and with the wisdom of god do you strive to serve and love others to take care of them and to be always concerned for their needs you know my dear brothers and sisters for the past three weeks now the priests of the archdiocese of manila together with our apostolic administrator bishop broderick pabilio have been meeting pervicari8 per groups every night video conference no online meetings we are talking about you there were only two questions every meeting the first question is how are the people entrusted to your care how are your parishioners [Music] [Music] [Music] so that was our first question that is what we tried to answer during our meetings how are the people entrusted by god to us and then the second question is what can we do to respond to their needs because we want to be responsible keepers of the keys entrusted to us by god hindi kasi nagpapabaya pastol [Music] authorities best exercise in caring for one another if we exercise authority in faith and with the wisdom of god we will use our authority our responsibilities our keys the keys entrusted to us by caring serving and loving one another my dear brothers and sisters god trusts us and god entrusts to us many keys especially the lives of other people let us use our authority in faith and with the wisdom of god let us be responsible for one another let us take care of one another and let us serve and love each other as jesus serves and loves us let us all together profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under was and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of we praise god for his wisdom that is beyond our understanding but we can ask him for all our needs because he shares his wisdom with us and uses us for his purposes for every petition let us say lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer for our pope francis the successor of saint peter that he may use the power of the keys wisely according to god's plan let us pray to the lord lord his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with
