Making Greatest Showman Costumes (& where to wear them)

happy birthday greatest showmen although knowing me and my procrastination this video is probably coming out well past your first birthday my relationship with the costumes of the greatest showman is fraught with some uncomfy ness not to sound like a snob but I'm sort of a historical accuracy snob really I can't help it I've done too much studying too much interesting the truth is in my head and it cannot be ignored also it didn't help that a few years prior I read half of PT Barnum's biography and the whole movie I was just thinking that didn't happen that's not what this isn't anyway it's been a while now since the movie actually came out and I've had some time to clear my system of the specific things I was holding against it and I'm looking at the costumes objectively again and there are a couple that I really like and I want to make now you may be wondering why should I make a greatest showmen costume where could I wear a greatest showmen costume I want to show you how useful a greatest showmen costume can be all the places you can wear it all the things you can do in it because the more eclectic this video gets and the more things I throw in no more tags I can add we're making our few jacket if not our huge ik when making our Hugh Hefner jacket I'm not you Hefner we will never do Jackman jacket when making our PT Barnum costume we're gonna try to do this as sewing machine less as possible he's apparently there several people subscribe to me that don't have or use sewing machines yet still watch my videos I'm just glad you're here so because I'm thankful for you I'm gonna show you a way to make a greatest showmen to a costume without having to use a sewing machine first you're gonna need a red jacket you'll probably find one at a thrift store without me needing this okay so the tricks and I are looking up reference photos for the jacket and that is not who we want that is exactly we have a look what this says over on the side how is Zac Efron so good-looking I like how with what could possibly be the answer kind of know what even words would you answer that question with the answer the greatest showmen so you can just use that as answers to questions that have no good answers impossible questions out there the greatest showman the greatest showman bad things having a good people the greatest showman where is my phone the greatest showman what is the point of it all the greatest John Vianney or Laurel the greatest or so greatest what does the Canadian military do the greatest require many Eminem's literally so much better than regular-sized Eminem the greatest romaji wolves have to but is my favorite character always does great characters still have a Christmas tree oh the greatest showmen i cut out two strips of black belt for the lapels and then two for the cuffs i used hot glue to attach the cuffs and then hand sewed the lapels on sometimes I look for excuses to hand sew just so I can watch Netflix while I do it forgot he's got this little gold thing this is a poinsettia which is kind of stupid but do I care yes trying to do more costume research on Google Images greatest showmen review hue oh wait what's wrong with this picture of Hugh Jackman oh I don't know maybe the fact that it's Tom Cruise the Internet is a deliciously intelligent place okay so I did use my song machine wants to take in this best that my friend JJ gave me the day his car got stolen and his car getting stolen has nothing to do with any of this but I just thought it was an interesting fact to decorate my vest i hot glued some trim on in the shape of a t' upward slanting v's it should come out looking like an amateur artist rendition of a flock of seagulls the standard sheep hat bought online sits a little too far down on my head so what you're going to do to fix that is hat ception take a hat then put the hat in the Hat and voila okay so it's time to film the grand reveal and I don't have a king this is a little too big Hey finally this thing will get some use [Music] other uses for this costume include looking like a Nutcracker at Christmastime or a baton twirler anytime I started by cutting a general bodysuit shape on the fold of a cheap jersey knit fabric I made two layers of this then sewed the two layers together at the neckline and then I folded that in half and cut it right down the middle and sewed it right back together this is not a necessary step but it sort of mimics the seams that are on the front of Zendaya's bodysuit I traced the front to make a back then bonded both at the crotch o'Barr very historically inaccurate bodysuit and a zig-zag stitch the elastic around the leg holes for the neck band I cut out a strip of nude mesh fabric that was about as wide as a Hershey bar and as long as a barbie then I sewed it in tubular fashion and turned it inside out with the chest area I double layered the mesh so that it wouldn't be see-through I round at the top to accommodate for a neck band then attached to said neck band i sewed that in place then set to work on be dazzling by the way if you notice that my hair was brown while I was actually cutting out the bodysuit I wish I had time to explain that to make the gloves you're gonna want to cut the mesh as long and as wide as just an arm really and for the finger holes so on one loop that is big enough to fit one Vienna sausage inside next sweep up any egg shards you might have on your table and get out your purple tulle and your 100k plaque then cut a couple strips of tulle that are too plaque Worth's long cut two pieces of elastic to be exactly the size of your gigantic bicep then ruffle the tulle the same way we did in my holiday Barbie video somehow I managed to lose a bunch of footage but I also added ruffles like this to the hips of our bodysuit oh and before sewing the gloves shut I bedazzled them with some gems and a six thousand glisten Nia has these highly red gold Victorian shoes and I could easily just spray paints Victorian type she was gold however all the shoes I own the ones that look most similar to those are these and they're ice skates but did that stop me no why it's a boring color anyway so I decided just to paint the dang things you know I should have got a wig but I've only been planning this video for like a year so I'm just going to be doing my hair in the spring and think I have to leave for work in a couple of hours so I have to get this grand reveal done shower and then go to work without pink hair because I work at a reputable place apparently pink is not a natural hair color in the movie her hair is cotton candy pink and I would consider this radioactive cotton candy that an alien Barbie would eat but cotton candy nonetheless [Music] remember that my friend JJ has this trap easy thing set up in his garage for like working out purposes and I'm in need of a trap easy thing pretty sure he's probably at work right now which is kind of perfect because I don't actually want anyone to see me in this thing in person so yeah I'm gonna head over there and ideally no one will be home and I can just get in shoot what I need and then get out good news no one's home if someone who never met me before saw me and this outfit right now they think I was like sometimes actually they would probably just be seing an accurate depiction of my personality I want to recreate that iconic scene where she like swings backwards and you see her face your house that's security camera that's plugged in gonna get some good footage this one's for the people always commenting that I should be longer grand reveals so at this point I finally started to feel awkward about wearing ice skates well not ice skating uses for this look include ice skating attracting attention and looking like Wanda from Fairly OddParents the number of cars slowing down on that road like they've never seen a what ever I am before I'm gonna head home now personally because my hair is too ruined to get any more good shot partially because I have to go to work and partially because my toes are super cold I really need some of that toasty toes stuff you know the insoles you put in to keep your toes warm my dad was going to Walmart the other day and I asked him could you get some toasty toes and he's like oh we already have something I said really and he reaches on top of the fridge and hands me a bag of tortilla chips Tostitos - have you ever heard such a dad dad joke I just before work so I'm literally going to have to wear a wig to work yes I'm going to have to wear fake hair because my real hair looks too fake this look is not super me not super comfortable but it's allowed it's 50% off day it Salvation Army so it's gonna be looking to be a mad hey to be a jungle in there register said when she put this fabric out she said she knew I would come in and get it there's a limo Humvee with I'm thinking a hot tub in the back a my predictable no one answered it actually might not have been a hot tub might have been I don't know what that might have been dang it I bet you knew I was gonna roll my window up do you think I'm predictable at this point I literally cannot get anything done until I get this figured out so I'm going to call everyone close to me and ask am i predictable what am i predictable okay I love you bye my predictable yeah bye this is quite the flattering angle of my jawline am i predictable alright thanks hey Micah am i predictable yes that invalidates your argument actually am i predictable like like predictable like you can predict predictable am i predictable girl oh really okay thanks bye do you think I am predictable I'll take it this is McAra am i predictable really my sister is the one person who I really predictable answered their phone and she didn't maybe she's misses unpredicted maybe she took all the unpredictability out of my mother's womb into herself oh my dad's called me back I think he's feeling better now do you think I'm predictable if you had to either put me in one category a predictable person or an unpredictable person which would you put me in that's all I needed to know I love you bye I should just march back up to Salvation Army be like hey lady I just called 12 of my closest and some not so close friends and they don't think I'm predictable so come to think of it she never actually called me predictable either I feel like I may have blown this all out of proportion alright time to start on the dress I'm trying to decide if I should use the more muted side or the super purple side by the way do you like my lip gloss I kid you not it is bacon grease as with all life's difficult decisions I put it to an Instagram vote and while that was a Bruin I sketch some pieces for the impending dress and the winner is I used a paper towel holder to determine the length of the front of my bodice and then I cut it out on the phone then I copied that on to another piece of fabric so that I would have two layers for the front of my body I made this bodice very similarly to my Cinderella dress but I want to caution you if you're gonna watch that video it's pretty bloody I cut two lines down the front of my bodice then trimmed away a little bit at the top and at the bottom so that the the main part of the bust part would be the biggest and I put it all back together and then sewed the front and back together right along the top then flipped it inside out and iron made the back by basically tracing the front and making it a little bit more base I may notice I'm talking a bit more quietly and calmly now that's because my father is asleep in the next room I use zip ties and ribbon to make boning channels in only the under layer of our bodice after cutting the zip ties to size and putting hot glue on the ends to keep them from being too sharp and pokey I sewed the ribbon to the bodice sonia's closely to the edges of the ribbon as I could then I split our little plastic friends into the channel and did a rolled him all along the bottom of the top and under layer of our bodice and I created a million or maybe just 14 of these little pieces of ribbon with knots tied on each and then to give my bodice a nice lace-up back I looped and pinned these little rib nuts all along the outer edge with since sewed them in place okay I hope you enjoyed that little ASMR moment but it's the next day and I can talk as loud as I want constructed our high-low skirt out of four main pieces one front panel about the length of a year old alligator two tapering side panels and one back panel as long as my waist to my feet then I pinned all those pretty purple panels together and pleated them along the top to fit my waist perfectly I sewed the pleats in place and then sewed the skirt panels together but I actually should have done that in the opposite order then I accidentally pinned the skirt lopsided ly to the bodice and sewed it in place while watching the Ted Bundy tapes let's make that collar around her neck that I find oddly reminiscent of a cobra I cut out a piece about the size of a three year old human folded it in half then sewed it in place turn it inside out and draped it on myself making adjustments as needed and for the little black accents on her neckline I just hot glued some black tulle in place make the beer I'm gonna want to take through your trash and pull out some pieces of mesh fabric and I trimmed hair off of my wick and hot glued it onto the mesh if you don't have a wig you can take from try visiting a local hair salon and scouring the floor for hair clippings add eyeshadow to your face before applying the beard to make it look a little more realistic this look makes my teeth look whiter next we have to put on some extreme fake eyelashes like the bearded lady has in the greatest showmen what says victorian-era costume falsies now to apply my fake beard I'm going to take this eyelash glue that I spent way too much money on and set it down because I spent way too much money on it to cover this whole thing with lash glue then I'm going to take out my hot glue gun and contemplate how much this costume is really worth to me now this is a low temperature hot glue gun but it's still hot enough to you know melt glue but I have a feeling I can pull this off if I put the glue on here and then a wait till it's not too hot to burn me but hot enough to adhere to my skin we're just gonna do it it's warm but so we gotta get it when it's a little hotter than that oh so then we just don't try this at home I'm not recommending you do this it's a good pain you know like when you're doing jane fonda workouts and she's like feel the burn bond feeling a burn for this next part we will be using eyelash glue because we need to stick the glue directly to our skin this is such a mess now if you're wondering what the uses for this costume here's some helpful suggestions maybe are 13 and you have a twin brother and you guys have always been reaching milestones at different ages and kind of had a healthy competition and then one day he gets chin hairs and he's like hey look I have a chin here you'll never do this and then next day you show up with this and you're like I have a whole chin full of hair so there's one use maybe you're going to Comic Con and you want to be the fellow from Assassin's Creed maybe you're going out and you don't want to be hit on so much maybe you're going to Walmart and you just want to fit in or maybe it's Halloween and you want to dress up as a bearded lady from the greatest showmen although this may be overdoing it just a tad for that I'm gonna drive really carefully getting pulled over would be kind of the worst most embarrassing thing ever because this fur coat is too short for me [Music]
