[Music] so um [Music] open my eyes oh god [Music] through the shadows heal the blindness in me come down on my darkness make me holy and wise o light of the world come open my eyes just as the blind man that jesus gave sight i want to live as your child of the light awaken the sleeper from dead set me free so the cry shines upon me and i truly might see open my eyes oh god help me to see break through the shadows heal the blindness in me come down on my darkness make me holy and wise o light of the world o light of the world o light of the world come open my eyes [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit and good morning to you all and you're very welcome as i welcome also all who join us virtually via our parish radio and webcam and shalom world and facebook live you're very welcome as we come together as members of god's family brothers and sisters in jesus christ in the sam that we have today at psalm 91 we repeat it is good to give thanks to the lord and we gather always in a spirit of gratitude to almighty god let us prepare ourselves to celebrate this mass by remembering our unworthiness and we remind ourselves you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life glory to god in the highest on earth peace to his people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of ecolasticus in a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind so too the defects of a man appears in his talk the kiln takes tests the work of the potter the test of a man is in his conversation the orchard where a tree grows is judged on the quality of its fruit similarly a man's word betrays what he feels do not praise a man before he has spoken since this is the test of men the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] it is good to give you thanks oh lord it is good to give you thanks to the lord to make music to your name almost high to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night it is good to give you thanks oh lord the just will flourish like the palm tree and grow like a leaven on cedar it is good to give you thanks o lord planted in the house of the lord they will flourish in the courts of our god still bearing fruit when they are old still full of still green to proclaim that the lord is just in him my rock there is no wrong it is good to give you thanks oh lord [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians when this perishable nature has put on imperishability and when this mortal nature has put on immortality then the words of the scripture will come true death is swallowed up in victory death where is your victory death where is your sting now the sting of death is sin and sin gets its power from the law so let us thank god for giving us the victory through our lord jesus christ never give in then my dear brothers never admit defeat keep on working at the lord's work always knowing that in the lord you cannot be laboring in vain the word of the lord [Music] open our hearts o lord to accept the words of your soul [Laughter] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord jesus told a parable to his disciples can one blind man guide another surely both will fall into a pit the disciple is not superior to his teacher the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the plank in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me take out the splinter that is in your eye when you cannot see the plank in your own hypocrite take the plank out of your own eye first and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother's eye there is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit now again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit for every tree can be told by its own fruit people do not pick figs from thorns nor gather grapes from brambles a good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart a bad man draws what is bad from the store of badness for a man's words flow out of what he fills his heart the gospel of the lord we're all very well aware of the sad situation our world is in at this time as we enter the season of lent next wednesday just as we were seeing some light at the end of the pandemic tunnel the pandemic at least coming towards an end having had such awful consequences so much loss of life so much sickness so much disruption to economic life and indeed to all of our lives just as it seems that we were learning to cope with that we now have war raging in eastern europe an aggressive and unwarranted invasion of ukraine with desperate consequences for its people awful suffering that's going to that is being inflicted as we gather here this morning the suffering that's been inflicted on innocent people we look to the international community to seek an end to this conflict through peaceful means as the only way forward i think we all feel a sense of helplessness what can we do we feel so helpless as we watch the human suffering and destruction that's taking place so many innocent children women and men pope francis has asked us to mark next wednesday ash wednesday as a day of fasting and prayer for ukraine in our helplessness we can heed this call and turn to almighty god for help this act of madness and badness on behalf of president putin is in stark contrast to the gospel and particularly to the gospels we have been reading over the past couple of sundays and today from luke's gospel a gospel that dares to challenge us to love our enemies to be compassionate as our father is compassionate to forgive in order to be forgiven to do unto others as we would have them do unto us and today we're asked to recognize the plank in our own eyes before we seek to correct our brother or sister about the splinter in theirs this gospel and particularly the passages we've been having is the greatest anti-war tree ties of all time if it is followed there is indeed no war as we pray for ukraine we do well to remind ourselves of the call of ash wednesday as we receive the blessed ashes on our foreheads the words that accompany it turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel we can place our commitment at this time of renewal and repentance accompanying our fasting and prayer before almighty god as we ask in our helplessness that he come to the aid of the people of ukraine at this time and bring the men of violence and invariably it is men bring the men of violence to the path of peace the opening prayer of our mass this morning was very relevant and we repeat that prayer grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule amen we stand together and profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who have spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen and ever aware of our calling to be followers of christ we come to you father imploring your help and inspiration in today's gospel jesus invites us to look at our own weaknesses faults and failures rather than those of others we pray for honesty in our lives so that we can see ourselves as we are and strive to be more understanding kind and loving with family friends and neighbor lord hear us lord graciously hear us this wednesday ash wednesday we mark the commencement of lent we pray that our lenten observance and charitable donations serve to alleviate the suffering and injustices faced by so many lord hear us lord graciously hear us today temper and sunday we pray for those who are struggling with addictions we pray that they find the courage and support to overcome their affliction and in and renew their lives lord hear us lord graciously hear us as the war rages in ukraine pope francis has asked us to pray for peace we ask god who is the god of peace and not of war who is the father of all not just of some who wants us to be brothers and sisters and not enemies lord hear us lord graciously hear us we pray for all young people who will be receiving the sacrament of confirmation next weekend open their hearts to your spirit and bring to fulfillment the good work that you have begun in them lord hear us lord graciously hear us we take a few moments to make our own of god rest in peace we ask you lord to hear our prayers open our minds and hearts as we make them all to you through christ our lord [Music] oh that i am all that i do oh i offer now to you take and sanctify these gifts for your glory lord knowing that i love and serve you is [Music] i do oh that i love i have i offer now to you all that i dream all that i pray all that i ever make i give to you today take and sanctify these gifts for your glory lord knowing that i love and serve you is in every reward for that i dream for that i pray all that i'll ever [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask your mercy that what you grant us the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lifted them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery as we pray holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna and the highest you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the ablation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our suck of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope dennis our bishop the order of bishops the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] amen [Music] jesus gathers us around this altar as brothers and sisters
