Life in an Off -Grid Cabin

[Music] for the last 20 years I've spent a lot of my time living in cabins and almost every morning starts the same way with a fire this time of year with winter being right around the corner the cabins pretty cold first thing in the morning it's nice to get that first fire going get some hot water on yourself a cup of coffee a cup of tea what a great way to start a morning [Music] now when it comes to firewood there's good firewood and there's not-so-good firewood here in Alaska birch is about the best thing you can get spruce is a close second it burns good and hot now Aspen is what I have and although it's not the best I've got a lot of it so that's what I use [Music] [Music] now up here on the mountain most people don't have wells it's about four or five hundred feet down to good water so what we do is we haul our drinking water and for everything else we collect rainwater [Music] it's hard to build a fire without making a mess [Music] [Music] today it's cold and drizzly outside winter's coming pretty soon makes that morning fire seems really really nice it also makes for a long lazy morning a good time to cook a big breakfast [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the breakfast done it's time to do the dishes sum up Mike earn some I got a wash [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] home [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] cutting firewood is a job that never ends I like to find the driest most seasoned what I have split it up with kindling for the next fire [Music] I love burning wood I like to split wood and like cut wood I like the freedom of wood when you think about it every other way to heat your home it's counting on somebody else whether it's natural gas or coal or propane fuel oil somebody's got to make it and you have to buy it but what would just go cut it [Applause] [Music] [Music] amazing how little you actually need just last year I didn't have this sink installed now that I do I feel like a millionaire the propane stove is a luxury [Music] [Music] with a nice hot wood stove a propane cook stove two bowls sink a battery-powered radio I don't really feel like I'm missing anything I need any power I've got a little generator I can fire up other than that pretty simple life [Music] this late in the fall the days go by fast so before it gets too close to dark I'm going to get the evenings firewood shut up brought into the cabin [Music] [Music] [Music] no matter what we do for a living most everything we do is to take care of the simple things in life heating your house hose on your back food on the table in my opinion a few acres of timber and a good solid wood stove that's like a 401k it's like money in the bank [Music] this time of year is a great time to pick lowbush cranberries they're great just to munch on that great on toast they make a good Jam they're good on pancakes I'm gonna pick enough to snack on through the night and for breakfast in the morning [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] all the days about over I'm gonna cook these cranberries down with some sugar and make a jam for tomorrow morning's breakfast then I'm gonna turn on the coleman landon kick on the radio sit back and watch the fire [Music] this world is full of amazing and wonderful things and one of the most wonderful in my opinion is spending a simple quiet day at a cabin in the woods thank you so much for coming along with me I hope you had a great day too my name is Dave Whipple and you've been watching bush radical and be radically see you soon [Music]
