ready to get back into our father's word here at the chapel we're gonna pick it up today and judges chapter 8 verse 8 we'd love for you to get your Bible and join us we're getting ready to have a old fashioned Bible study here at the chapel chapter by chapter verse by verse study of God's letter that he wrote to you and we're going to pick it up today with Gideon that the cutter down is what his name means and he could cut it there's no question about it you know God chose this one and raised him up to deliver Israel from the oppression of the media Knights at the beginning of chapter 8 we have the ephraim i'ts who were called upon to try and cut off the Midianites and the Amalekites who were allied with them and the children of the east at the Jordan knot and kill as many of them as they could and not let them cross the Jordan over unto the east side which would have been on their way home basically and then they would have refortified and probably been back another day so Gideon taking care of business he's in hot pursuit that's where we'll pick it up and we had him going he's after the two kings of the media nights that being zebah and zalmunna and the two princes of the media night or have been zb-- the eeprom i'ts have already taken care of them and this was a great victory for the people of israel isaiah even spoke of this victory over the media nights in Isaiah chapter 10 verse 26 but we're gonna pick it up today with Gideon and hot pursuit of zebah and zalmunna in fact they had already crossed over to the east side of Jordan and they were insecure this there were several circuits this one had was allotted to the tribe of GAD which is on the east side of Jordan but Gideon asked the elders of this location saku --the four loaves of bread so that he could refurbish read replenish refresh a better word his troops 300 in they've been taking care of business they've been getting after of course they've had a lot of help in that being from our Heavenly Father most of the media nights Amalekites and and children of the East Ishmaelites is what they are ended up killing each other because the Lord discomforted them but the men the elders of scoot refused to give food to get in in his troops they said well you know you haven't got the hand of zebah and zalmunna under you at this time you haven't conquered them yet and sure as we help you they will kill you and then they'll come back and kill us because we helped you so with that let's pick it up let's ask that word of wisdom in Yeshua's precious name father I ask you to open ears open eyes this day judges chapter 8 verse 8 and it reads and he went up this is Gideon and the three hundred with him thence to Penn ul and spake unto them likewise the same that they said to the men of Saku 'the give us bread and water for faint were tired were hungry and the men opinio well answered him as the men of Saku had answered him and remember he told the elders of the couth i don't have time to deal with you right now but i will be back and they're going to be thorns and briers ripping your flesh from your bones and he's going to have pretty much the same thing to say to the men opinion well Penuel by the way means face of god and it's the location where Jacob wrestled with God all night long you may recall it means face of God Jacob named it back because he looked upon the face of God as he wrestled him and he did not die that's the reason he called it face of God and the me an opinion saying the same thing don't put us in jeopardy zebah and zalmunna or gonna kill you and then they'll find out that we helped you and they'll come back and kill us as well verse 9 and he spake also under the menapii ul saying when I come again in peace I will break down this tower when I return unhurt and victorious I'm going to tear the the strength of your city the walled castle the Citadel if you will down and with you in it and these aren't threats that Gideon is making they are promises verse 10 now zebah and zalmunna were in car core core core means foundation if you translate it and it's on the east side of Jordan where the media nights what's left of them 15 some 15,000 is all that's left out of the hundred and thirty five thousand that started out the war against Israel and now they're on the east side of Jordan so no doubt they're saying well now we can drop our pack and take five there's no way Gideon and his three hundred are going to follow us across the Jordan and their hosts with them their armies with them about fifteen thousand men all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east for there fell and hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword and you know three hundred started out against one hundred and thirty five thousand and I'll assure you God's elect are going to feel a locking they're still outnumbered 15,000 to 300 and I'll assure you many of God's election are going to feel like there's only 300 of us against 135,000 and I want you to remember this scripture that when God decides that this is the way it's going to be that's the way it's gonna be you can take it to the bank it doesn't matter as I said earlier an earlier lecture it doesn't matter if it's a hundred and thirty five thousand or a hundred and thirty five million if God says it you can take it to the bank that's the way it is verse 11 and Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents nomadic people's on the east side of Nova and Jacques var and smote the host for the host was secure in this doesn't carry the meaning at all in the translation what what this is saying is that the armies the enemy armies of the media Knights they felt safe and secure because they thought there's no way Gideon and his 300 we're going to be chasing them across the Jordan they thought that it was over and now they could finally get some rest and sleep but here comes Gideon over the hill and in a surprise attack and it jolts them out of this secure feeling they have and it's a totally a surprise attack and it jolts them out of the security that they were feeling was 12 and when zebah and zalmunna fled he's being Gideon pursued after them and took the two kings of median zebah and zalmunna and discomforted all the hosts he terrified the armies of the media with his boldness for one I'm sure by this time they're thinking this guy is crazy I mean he took 300 men and came against a hundred and thirty-five thousand he's followed us all this way across the Jordan now he's coming after our king with our Kings with three hundred people we still have fifteen thousand he's not a bit afraid and that's because God had promised him the victory and we see this unbelievable strength and courage that is endowed on one whom the Holy Spirit of God has come upon verse 13 and Gideon the son of joash returned from the battle before the Sun was up now this really loses it as well note that the last two words in this verse are italicized that means that they've been added thinking that it would ease the reading and not supposed to change the meaning but the word son in in the Hebrew language is Jerez and the before the is can also be translated the ascent of and I think Moffat does a better job of translating this he translates that last phrase is from the pass of Jerez and if we read it that way and Gideon the son of joash returned from battle and came from from the pass of Jerez it makes more sense than before the Sun was up that makes it sound like that it took all night to accomplish what they did I don't believe that it did verse 14 and caught a young man of the men of Saku 'the and inquired of him and he described and he this is he ripped or we would say he wrote unto him the princes of Saku he wrote down the names of the princes and elders of couth in other words those who had decided in all their wisdom not to give Gideon and his men even though they were of the same nation Israel and fighting a common what should have been a common enemy he didn't ask them to go with him and help fight all he asked was for bread and they refused and the elders thereof even threescore and seventeen men 77 men and these will be 77 that won't be happy to look upon the horizon and see Gideon and his 300 returning victorious with zebah and zalmunna in hand 15 and he came into the men of Saku 'the and said Behold zebah and zalmunna with whom he did upbraid me its to carp that mere are contend with me saying are the hands of zebah and zalmunna and now in buying hand that we should give read under thy men that are weary we're not going to give you bread for your men because we know there is Alma and ziba sal muna and zebra are going to be victorious and then they'll come back and kill us if we help them so here we're going to see seventy seven men sweating bullets they're not happy to see Gideon coming back victorious at all it's payback time and like I said it wasn't a threat that Gideon made concerning the briars and the thorns it was a promise and it's going to happen or 16 and he took the elders of the city that's being Saku 'the and thorns of the wilderness and briars of the in other words and with them he taught the men of Saku this word taught and Hebrew was he it means that he caused them to know and what he caused them to know was that what Gideon was doing was God's will and they were in the wrong they were fighting against God's will they were helping zebah and zalmunna instead of helping their own people to defeat these enemies that like I said earlier should have been common enemies now you know wires and thorns does that sound like cruel and unusual punishment they deserved it for what they did and all you know he'd like I said earlier he did not ask Gideon did not ask them any big thing he didn't ask them to go with them and help fight all he asked for was bread and water to refurbish or refresh his troops so they could continue their pursuit or 17 he's not through and he beat down Gideon did the town down I should say the tower of pena well and slew the men of the city no doubt they were hiding in the tower as it came crashing down and in many opinion died for refusing to help Gideon as well now he turns his attention to zebah and zalmunna then said he Gideon unto zebah and zalmunna what manner of men were they whom he slew at Tabor and they answered as thou art so were they each one resembled the children of the king and at this point from what they have seen Gideon is in charge so they're considering him to be the king and what Gideon is asking table words were battle took place you remember who the first to answer Gideon's call it the rule were it was his own family the people of Manasseh Tia badger rights to be more specific but they're saying you know now that we get to thinking about it those guys that we killed at table war they look a whole lot like you Oh verse 19 and he said Gideon they were my brother and even the sons of my mother of the same womb as the Lord liveth you can swear by nothing greater if he had saved them alive I would not slay you but you didn't save them alive you killed my own brothers there's 20 and he said unto jetter Gideon speaking to jetter his firstborn injector is a form of a name maybe you're familiar with the father in law of Moses Jethro and according to the Smith's Bible dictionary that means his excellency which was a honorary title in Jethro's case probably not the case just Jeff third was his name up and slay BAM Gideon said to his oldest son his firstborn but the youth drew not his sword for he feared because he was yet a youth and it would have been a an insult to the seasoned King workings of the media Knights had a boy slaying them and they're probably thankful that that was not the case but he was but a boy and and that that wasn't going to happen 21 then zebah and zalmunna said rise now this directed to Gideon and fall upon us for as the man is so is his strength in other words such strength doesn't belong to a boy but to a man and Gideon was man enough to get it done and Gideon arose and slew zebah and zalmunna and took away the ornaments that were on their camels necks these ornaments were probably crescent shaped moons which are still popular with these particular peoples in this part of the world to this day no doubt they were made of gold and silver and no doubt much of that gold and silver had been stolen from the people of Israel in the seven-year-old questioned by the media Knights Amalekites and children of the east as well as any other nation that got in the path of these warriors of median verse 22 then the men of Israel said unto Gideon rule thou over us both thou and thy son and thy son son also in other words in perpetuity that's to be continued on from generation to generation you're your heir your descendants will reign over all Israel for thou has delivered us from the hand of Medan and it wasn't it wasn't Gideon who delivered them and you know after this really gets me dead after all God went to the extent of making sure that the people of Israel weren't able to boast in their own strength their own power but they would have to look upon it as the power and strength of Almighty God who delivered them by taking it from 32000 that were originally in Gideon's army down to 300 still do the people ascribe the victory to the Lord no they say Gideon you delivered us from the media nice so we want you and your descendants to be our king unbelievable by the way this word rule is a different word I hope you would know by now at this point in our study in judges that judges in the Hebrew language is show Fatima and it means ruler and the prime of that is a verb Shafak which means to set things right and rule this word rule in verse 22 in the Hebrew ma shawl and it simply means to to reign as a king would reign in Israel wanted a man king for so many generations before they finally got one God wanted to be their king and now now we're gonna find out whether median excuse me Gideon has an ego problem at this point maybe after all this success the power has gone to his head let's find out verse 23 and Gideon said unto them I will not rule over you neither shall my son rule over you the Lord Yahoo they shall rule over you Gideon not on an ego trip at this point he recognizes that what strength it was that brought about the victory over the media Knights it certainly wasn't his and he was fully aware that he was giving credit where credit was do that is with Yaakov a what happens next verse 24 and Gideon said unto them I would desire a request of you I don't want to be your king but I do have a request I would desire a request of you that you would give me every man the earrings of his prey before they had golden earrings because they were Ishmaelites Ishmael for those of you who don't know was the son of Hagar and Abraham Hagar was a maid if you will to Sarah Abraham's wife and when Sarah was not able to bear children to Abraham she had Abraham going into her handmaid Hagar and Ishmael was the result I believe is smile probably the beginning of the Arabic tribes of the world at this time Ishmael again being of Hagar and Abraham the nomadic tribes of Arabia verse 25 answered and by the way God did not tell Gideon to do what he's about to do and it will become a snare unto Gideon and they answered we will willingly give them and they spread a garment and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey giving a part of the spoiled spoils of war that they had collected no doubt there was a lot more beside what they gave to Gideon what's he going to do with all this verse 26 and the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold that's approximately 50 pounds of gold by our wake a considerable amount of gold beside ornaments and collars and purple raiment that was on the kings of medians Abaza munna and beside the change that were about their camels next these people really like gold and silver the ornaments that's talking about would be like chains around the neck for example the collars would be pendants for the years and then not only did they adorn themselves with these pretties of gold and silver they even make change for their camels neck so a lot of booty was taken from them remember they had camels that were that were without number so if they had a chain of gold around each one of them his neck you can imagine how much gold that is verse 27 and Gideon made an ephod thereof and put it in his city even in Oprah and all Israel went thither a whoring after it which thing became a snare unto Gideon and to his house in other words he made this ephod which an ephod was a pouch if you will that was attached to the the priests breastplate and it is what contained the Urim and Thummim so when one wanted to inquire of God the priests would draw out the urine or the Thummim and that was interpreted as as God's decision in the matter so Gideon is deciding on his own God didn't do this safe for him to do this and now we're beginning to see a little bit of an ego because this type of behavior was very common among the kings of Israel the ten tribes to the north and even a few of the kings of few they would get successful and the power would go to their head and before you know it they think that they have the right to take on the responsibilities of the priesthood in fact the case of Jeroboam the first king of the ten tribes to the north after the nations split after Solomon's son Rehoboam when the nation was split at that time but Jeroboam went so far as to start making up his own religious holidays and appointing his own priests so what was Gideon thinking here I think actually that the priesthood had become insignificant at this point and he thought well I might as well have the ephod the priests aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing so at least then I'll be able to inquire of the Lord but again this thing became a snare on to Gideon and his house verse 28 thus was media and subdued before the children of Israel so that they lifted up their heads no more and the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon starting to see a pattern here it seemed like we go through a period of oppression god raises up a judge to deliver his children the judge sets things right and rules and part of that is making sure the people don't fall back into idolatry the worship of Bale and the the Grove worship and but then as soon as the judge becomes elderly and passes away before you know it the people are right back worshiping Bale and other gods of other nations and of course that makes our Father a very jealous it makes yah how they very angry and he'll raise up then an enemy to oppress his children until they finally come to their senses and stop the idolatry worship 29 and durable Bell the son of joash went and dwelt in his own house throb a bell is Gideon remember when he tore down the altar of bail joash his father's home the people of the bail worshippers came and wanted joash to turn gideon over to them so they could kill him and that's when joash said you know the bail needs somebody to fight for him to protect his rights to save him and that's how Jerome Bell came upon this Gideon came upon this honorary named rubble Bell meaning that he fought against bail and bail could not harm him verse 30 and Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten for he had many wives at a total of 70 sons verse 31 and his concubine that was in Shechem she also bare him a son whose name he called Abimelech now this information is given to us at this point setting up what's going to happen and when we get to chapter 9 now Shechem you had a lot of Canaanites still there and in fact this name of domoic means father of the king and it was a very popular name among the Philistines so I think what we have here this concubine that was in Shechem was not of Israel Gideon being of Israel and then this Gentile having a son this child I believe was probably a man's are those of you don't know what that is look up the word for an illegitimate child that being bastard in the Old Testament take it to the Hebrew and you'll find what I'm talking about that some mam's are one of mixed race if you will and I'll further prove and document that when we get to chapter 9 verse 32 and Gideon the son of joash died in a good old age and was buried in the supply curve of the grave if you will of joash his father in Ofra of the abayas writes they one of the families major families of the Manasseh and Gideon was a true judge of Israel God raised up this one to set things right and rule the cutter down which is what his name means was the fifth judge of Israel what is five in biblical term acts it is Grace he was a good judge when you do things God's Way and serve the Lord you too can expect to live a good long life and Gideon certainly did verse 33 and he came to pass as soon as Gideon was dead that the children of Israel turned again and went a whoring after Balaam and made bail birth their God here we go again just as soon as the one who such things right in rule is out of the picture the people go running back whoring after the gods of the other nations Bale birth by the way means the Covenant God and what an abomination here they're worshiping Bale birth the god of the Covenant and they're replacing the true covenant god of Yahweh with a foreign god 34 and the children of Israel remembered not the Lord God you forget him he will forget you who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side trouble is on the horizon 35 to include and we'll stop for today neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerome Bell in other words the family of Gideon namely Gideon according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel by delivering the nation out of the oppression of the hand of the media Knights and the armies that were their allies and we're gonna find out they put a price on the head of his sons in our next lecture in fact all of his sons remember he had seventy all of his sons with the exception of one will be slain by this Abimelech and his crew so Abimelech is a type I want to kind of set this up for our next lecture but Abimelech there's a true type for Antichrist and if every you see a type for Antichrist this is a great one and don't miss the next lecture I encourage you to be sure and catch it it has a lot to do with the prophecy of the end time I've got a short message we'll ask you to listen a moment won't you please
