pull up in a car that has like 250 horsepower the horse going really you can get anywhere you want and you're still going to sit on my back we welcome you back to CBS mornings it's 8:30 we've been waiting for this all morning we've been talking about this we are on a high today this is the first time that was the first time Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan shared the screen on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee that was back in 2016 guess what they're still friends now they're in a new movie it's called unfrosted it was written and directed by Mr Seinfeld dropped the microphone Jerry the film was about serial Giants Kelloggs and post racing to create the first breakfast pastry that was back in 1963 so Jerry Seinfeld plays a fictional Kelloggs executive his name is Bob Cabana I like that name and Gaffigan plays Kellogg CEO edel Kellogg III great numbers last week Bob you look at these demos we beat alphabets in 4 to6 olds letters bad idea don't make them think they want to eat did you read about the boy in Bloomington who used the letters to spell horrible and that's on his permanent record good luck getting a job hey did you get my memo about the Frogman priz inside some kids are eating them yeah they're frog men they'll find their way out did you look in on Tony on my way now keep them happy o Vietnam that seems like a good idea seems like a good idea Vietnam that seems like a good idea there's J sein fall in CVS Sunday morning contributor Jim Gaffigan join us now I want to pick up on lines like that Vietnam that seems like a good idea Walter kite is referred to as a wizard face news monkey wizard face wizard face a wizard I guess Melissa McCarthy someone says to her you look good her response you look the same Cedric the Entertainer he's hosting an award show for serials he says I have a suggestion how about filling up the box I love that and my favorite bra I always thought bra was for rier but in this movie Jerry it stands for booby restraining apparatus I know you can't say that without laughing so when you got this idea which by the way you tweeted in 2018 can we put that up quickly Jerry Seinfeld 2018 August 21st at one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop-Tart movie imagine the drunk on sugar power Kellogg serial culture of the mid-60s in Battle Creek Michigan that's a Vibe I could work with what did you see that no one else was thinking when I tweeted that I guess it was in my head I had this standup bit about poptarts and I wanted to see if people went I like that idea I'd like to see a Pop-Tart movie uhhuh I don't I never read the responses if anybody responded but uh yeah I was just rattling around and then spike fiston is the guy who pushed me into it but then it seems like you got the Dreamcast as I was watching the movie did you guys feel this I can't believe so and so's in it I can't believe so and so's in it and they're so good and funny Al so good but Jim Gaffigan you have a very key role what did it take for him to get you he said hi it's Jerry well I remember when Jerry mentioned that he was writing this with you know a spike and some Seinfeld writers and I I had to do that balance of being the friend and not the guy that was begging to be in the movie I I remember hearing about it wow that sounds interesting but in my mind I'm like figure out a way to get in the movie so but he was in the movie from page one because we just you just look at him you picture the president of kellogs in 63 there he is there he is well so Gail points out all the great lines but we were talking backstage about all the pop cultural references that are in the film the movie references from The Right Stuff Apollo 13 Jaws Apocalypse Now yes you know the Godfather well we did that on the Seinfeld series we were always imitating movies right so these are the same writers so we it's just something we like to do for fun so we were talking about earlier how you were able to do it with real not real people but there really is a kellogs there really is a post there is a real Pop-Tart I mean you're not exactly the Ken Burns of breakfast documentaries here you're taking some Liberties right we took a lot of Liberties and we did not get um proper uh legal clearances before we started is that in retrospect an issue should we be disclosing I uh it seems to be okay uh kellogs just saw the movie that I always say this is the opposite of Barbie Barbie was made by Mattel kogs had no idea this was even going on what did they tell you wait wait what was their reaction they haven't uh said anything no but they they seem okay with it and they're going to put us on some Pop-Tart boxes which we interpret as a sign of they're they're not mad at us but we obviously just man Su someone IX and then you sue them but if they did Sue me what would be better for the movie publicity imagine me walking up those steps on Center Street on a Pop-Tart chart but Jim you know it seemed to me there are a lot of comedians in the movie there are a lot of big stars 15 standup Comics 13 was there a lot of improvising because I thought did was that written on a page you all deliver it so effortlessly Jim ad libed uh the Vietnam sounds like a good idea there was a lot of ad was there but the script was there so it was definitely uh and you know this was the you know the Seinfeld Jerry and the Seinfeld writer so they would do the scene and then they might tweak something but the the the lines were there so and then you know like at the end of a scene you can't you know get a comedian to shut up so then you I'll do like you know Vietnam that sounds the guy I was portraying was that dumb right this is also Jerry's directorial debut congratulations so what's it like as a first time director do you think think this is going well for him or things don't no I think it's I mean I I think also the TV show Seinfeld was such it's a writer's medium like television so it wasn't uh foreign to him and and my question was like does someone have the stamina to direct a movie and he totally did but Jerry when you're on stage as a comedian you're dealing with the one microphone cable you just got to make sure you don't trip over it right but then when you're directing a movie I've been on set one or times see it's a million trucks a million a million things so how do you handle that not well I mean I don't know I I did it on the show and I said and you kind of build up those skills of managing a lot of different things this is a completely different you're dealing with visual effects and face matching and set and this hard movie Jerry for you was it a hard movie in terms of writing it no because it's it's silly we had one remember we had that guy blow up on the set we had a somebody from the prop Department lost their temper one time on the set and started screaming at someone that true story true underling yeah and I go we have to calm down it's a Pop-Tart movie none of this matters yeah yeah let's not so that that was the kind of the atmosphere I wanted to create let's just have fun with this was during Co really was the inspiration I got so tired of seeing the sad faces every night on TV and I go as a comedian we hate sad faces we want to we want to break that face we want to make them smile can I talk about the serial Wars which were kind of a thing back in the day uh and I was asking you before I could St well I couldn't come up with do you know did you have a favorite post seral I'm not going to like dis poost but like I didn't like grap nuts I didn't like Honeycombs the only thing that I I liked everything I liked was Kelloggs I love post too we really give them a rough time in the movie you do a little bit not not as bad as the quer oats but I love post too post is great bye bye post Jim were you a Pop Tart person was it something you even thought about cuz I mov were uh I mean in my family I'm the youngest of six so on the rare occasion my mom would buy a box of Pop-Tarts if it entered the house they would never last so like I don't think I had a toasted Pop-Tart till I was 30 I didn't even know they could be toasted cuz if you had time to put it in the toaster a sibling would you know you you can microwave it on the side of the box microw is two second microwave two seconds it who's got who's got time to do that Jerry can we just talk about the end of Curb Your enthusiastic you were so I got a lump watching watching the final season what was it like for you guys it was tied and not number one I didn't know you were going to be in it so that was a pleasant surprise what was it like for you on that it was like I felt like Larry and I were ending our lifelong partnership wow in a in a really nice way yeah and I wasn't on Kirby I was on Kirby enthusiasm a couple times but that show kind of came off of my show in a way that Larry was a known person everybody knew how funny and great he was yeah and he did that show but he was playing himself on that show I played myself on my show and 25 years later we came together I just thought this is kind of amazing so we we we just loved it and you got a big birth say coming up next week 70 are you freaked out about it are you yes you're 70 years old 70 yeah get right out of town I know I don't understand it either amazing yeah right and he looks so good Jim how old not human not human yes it's he's part eight hey Jim I did I did kind of pan over to you and wonder how old are you I'm I'm I'm 21 so amazing started he hasn't slept all week the price of teen got five children congratulations I can't wait for people to see this movie well donees gentlemen thank you very much please stick around enjoy the poptarts uh Jerry paid a lot for those T appreciate it you can watch
