Is Amazon’s Moenich World Coin Grab Bag Worth Buying?

hey what do you know more duplicates [Music] hello everybody silverfigure here and welcome to the silver picker squad now today's video is yet another grab bag video but it's a little bit different than usual now if you're familiar with my channel you'll know that i often go on ebay and other sites like that and buy coin grab bags hoping to get all sorts of rare stuff in them right i'll spend like a hundred dollars and hope that i get a chance at pulling out a very rare coin that might be included now we mostly find that they're pretty much all scams and we don't usually make our money back the only time that we make our money back is when we buy from local coin stores or other really reputable sources now i'm not buying from ebay today and i'm also not buying from a local coin store instead i am scratching an itch that i've had for a long time and i am finally buying the world coin grab bag off of amazon.com now if you're familiar with amazon and you've ever searched for coins you are definitely familiar with this listing it is the moen niche monik moa niche whatever the way you pronounce it it is this coin grab bag for 50 world coins usually for around 9 to 11 depending on the day that you look now in this case it was 9.16 when i ordered it and it's roughly a half a pound of coins and the world coins that you will see in the listing are from 1950 to 2000 usually so basically bulk foreign coins not a lot of value there but i've always wanted to check it out and i decided that now is the time i'm gonna bite the bullet i'm gonna buy the coins and we're gonna go through them together honestly it doesn't really look like a good deal i mean we're talking nine dollars for about a half a pound of coins now for those of you who are new to the hobby it's pretty standard that at local coin stores or at coin shows or other reasonable reputable places where you can buy coins you can usually buy bulk foreign coins for about seven dollars a pound and if you look on ebay you'll be able to see that they range anywhere from like five to ten dollars a pound for bulk world coins so this is nine dollars for half a pound really meaning we're spending 18 a pound and that is almost three times the going rate so not a great deal but we haven't yet opened the coins so we are going to do so and who knows maybe we'll get some gems who knows maybe we'll even coinoscope app so anyway enough with the jibber jabber let's take a look at the amazon listing and crack into these coins all right well here it is the moenich world coins grab bag let's open her up i'm going to use scissors again today because it is a scissor kind of day let's open her up oh i hope i didn't cut into the velour gift bag [Applause] all right and this is what we're left with we've got our velour gift bag it sounds like they actually have a little uh plastic bag in there as well okay so let's uh get rid of this vuluer gift bag and dump out the coins okay feast your eyes on the monach world coin grab bag okay there's a couple things that already sort of uh pique my interest let's take a look and see if anything in particular uh peaks out so first off this coin is an israeli 10 agrocoin and it is about the most worthless coin you can get um it is pretty cool if you are into middle eastern coins it does have a nice design that's based on i believe either a an old ancient israeli coin or an ancient israeli fresco but in any case this is literally worthless alright let's see if anything else peeks out all right well here's one this one kind of looks like silver i doubt it is i'm not sure what it is it says 2002 it's got a moon with a star and a lot of arabic writing this is a prime example of something that i would use the coinoscope app for so let's move this stuff out of the way and take a look at what the coinoscope app has to say about it all right so we're going to open up the coinoscope app opens really quickly which is fantastic now all we're going to do is we're going to center the coin make sure that it registers and we take the picture connecting searching and voila just like that right on numista how freaking cool is that now we know that it's five rupees from pakistan this app is literally magic and is a lifesaver if you haven't already paused the video to download it i uh think you should all right so we've got our first coin from pakistan over there now we're going to go just looking through things and as we see things that are interesting i will look them up on kaneoscope okay we have a 1997 canadian penny that's worthless put that in the worthless category and what do you know from 2001 another canadian one cent so they lied they are supposed to be giving us new coins for each one that's two canadian cents what do you know another one from 2001 another canadian cent okay this is total bs these are not even different dates i'm gonna pull out all the one cent coins from canada and see how many we get that is total nonsense another one another one another one okay that is total bs there are one two three four five six seven seven canadian one cent coin so not only are these like the least interesting least valuable coins that you could possibly expect to get in a world coin grab ag but there are seven of the same ones and they said that they're all different so i'm probably going to already lodge a complaint with this that is very very not cool and what do you know another triple duplicate these are one cent euro coins and these have the spain design on the reverse really really not cool so again very worthless coins and three of the same so we'll add those to the mix very disappointing so far i i do think the pakistan coin is cool just because it's a little bit different and unusual even though i uh i don't think it's worth anything and what do you know another one cent euro coin this one's a little bit different kind of a cool design i'm not sure which country this is representing but very very not cool that they're all basically the same coin and on theme we have two more identical one cent coins from the bahamas really really not cool i am very disappointed they couldn't even stick to their own rule of having only one of each coin these are even the same date so so disappointing if i was a kid and i was getting this because they're saying it's good for a gift right so i'm thinking it's a good gift for kids maybe i mean i would be really disappointed that they're all the same four one penny coins from england uh these three are absolutely identical so totally totally uncool at least this one is one of the newer ones so even though it's worthless at least it's different than the ones over here these are the ones i'd be complaining about right i can't complain that they're giving me worthless world coins because at least they're interesting the problem is that these three are identical not cool and i know that i'm sort of cherry picking through this and sort of looking for the duplicates but it's because i am disappointed i mean this is something that's a perfect example of a duplicate that i'm not disappointed by these are both five cent euro coins which are not worth much but at least they're from two different countries at least that's a little bit interesting we have again this spain on the left and i'm not sure which one is on the right but at least it's different so those two i'm not super disappointed by even though they're not worth anything now these coins are pretty cool these are from the united arab emirates and i know that because on the reverse they actually say united arab emirates both in english and in arabic so i can read the english part however i don't actually know what the denomination is so i am going to crack out the coinoscope app and see what the denomination is and i will complain again three of the exact same coin not cool all right very cool so it is a one durham khalifa coin and we can see that it is metal alignment as well and it's nickel plated steel so i'm going to add a note and i'm going to say monic world monach grab bag add a tag i'm going to add another tag for uae a tag for arabic a tag for grab bag and i love how it auto populates and then i'm going to hit save and it now will be saved to my files really cool and you can now see that i have two different coins here and it has all the listings with all the information super super interesting go over to tagged and now you can see the different coins that are arabic on them from grab bags there's a lot of ways to organize your collection with this app and it is really really cool hey what do you know more duplicates two coins from brazil that are absolutely the same the only difference they're five centavo coins the only difference is the year now something that i did find interesting here is that it looks like the years are actually stamped in after the fact which makes me think maybe they use the same planchets every year and then they stamp them based on the volume that they actually need to put into circulation let's take a look a little bit closer so you can see that 2007 it's not actually raised it looks like it's stamped in very very cool so i'm gonna have to do more research on that two francs from france from the 1970s these are beautiful coins i actually love these but i'm only really interested in them if they're silver so from the 60s and earlier next up are two 10 cent coins from barbados that is actually a country i have been to it is a gorgeous island country this one's from 2008 this one's from 1989. oh i have a great idea instead of a value count like i normally do we're going to do a country count see how many different countries are represented here and we're going to even put the little flags all the way down here as well and so far we have pakistan france barbados canada we have the eu over here we have the uk we have bahamas more eu brazil and uae let's see what comes next next up are two coins from what i believe is thailand but it also could be cambodia or lao so what i'm going to do is i'm going to crack out coinoscope and we will be able to see for sure [Music] [Applause] all right so i guess indeed it does look like it is from thailand nice and i was just about to say we're done with the duplicates when i realized that there were actually three more thai bot coins so we have a total of five thai bot not cool monitch not cool next up three 20 centavos coins from mexico whoop dee doo i actually really like the mexican coins but i do not like that we got three of them i'm sorry i keep complaining about the same problem but it's really not cool i mean the whole idea of this is that you're getting exposure to lots of different countries and coins from all over the world and they're all freaking the same okay i think we're finally done with the duplicates i sifted through them to see and we have now a 50 centavos piece from mexico so another mexican coin 50 or coin from denmark from 2004. this is a 10 peso coin from the dominican republic and this is a bi-metallic coin and this is the kind of thing that i like to see in a grab egg like this the whole idea for this is to get people into the hobby to get new people on board and to teach them about the variety of coins out there so seeing a bi-metallic coin is a cool thing to have in there so that is a positive find even though it's not worth anything this is the 10 agarot coin that i showed you earlier a very nice design but absolutely worthless 25 colonists from costa rica another country i have been to ten dollars from jamaica from 2012 i wish this was ten dollars from the united states of america so i could get my money back nice coin nice coin and a one dollar from jamaica now again even though this coin is not worth anything to a hardcore collector i actually like the inclusion of this coin because it's not round so again the idea of this grab bag being on amazon and being super accessible even to people that are not coin collectors is a huge opportunity to get people into the hobby and seeing the variety of coins out there seeing something like this is actually a big plus so the only benefit i can see from this grab bag so far is the fact that it's on amazon and very very available to the public and can get more people into coin collecting but with things like this shenanigans like all these duplicates is gonna turn people off from the hobby right away so i am very unhappy with this got three coins from guatemala and these are the 1 centavo the 5 centavos and the 10 centavos and what i will say with these is that these two from the newer issues are beautiful i love those designs even though these aren't silver these are really really spectacular i definitely definitely like these next up we got a little coin from honduras nothing too special here a teeny tiny coin from poland now this is a coin from switzerland and i'm very familiar with these coins so i don't need to look it up but even though this is written with latin letters this might be the kind of thing that a new collector would use coinoscope for because you can see it says uh helvetica but it doesn't actually say switzerland so that's how you'd know that uh it's swiss it says helvetica but you could use the coinoscope app to figure that out as well another coin from barbados 25 cents from the east caribbean states and another brazilian coin 10 centavos 10 centimos from peru this is a 101 coin from south korea normally i would have to use the koinoscope app for this one but i do know this because i've also been to korea uh-oh back to duplicate town it looks like we've got two one piece of coins from the philippines now what's interesting is they say 2010 and 2015 on this side but when you flip it over this is very confusing it says 1993 down here but it just says banco central filipinos so i don't think it's celebrating a specific event so i'm curious why did it say 1993 somebody tell me in the comments below this is a nice design this is five kobo from nigeria first one from the african continent we got in this crab bag we have 50 pesos from colombia there's a bear on the other side and it's actually a really really nice design just a few more coins to go this is a one cent coin from fiji we got two coins from the cayman islands a one and five cent coin and this is pretty interesting on the five cent coin there is a shrimp i don't think i've ever seen a shrimp on a coin before so that's actually pretty interesting to me um have you ever seen a shrimp on a coin before if there are other coins with shrimp featured on them put it in the comments australia all right and the last two coins are coins that i cannot identify on my own so we are going to have to use the coinoscope app for both of them i'm going to guess that this one is japanese based just on the design and this one i have no idea all right so the first one check it out on the coinoscope pro app and i was right it is a japanese sen from 1942. that's actually really cool um i like this coin this is actually my favorite coin that we got in this set it's obviously not silver but it is still really cool it's a wartime era coin beautiful design definitely definitely happy with that all right and for the last coin of all let's see what coinoscope comes up with bulgaria ah very interesting okay i'm gonna enter my note as usual for the monitch grab bag enter the tag as bulgaria also going to add grab bag and of course hit save all right so this is what you get with the monitch world coin assortment grab bag extravaganza bonanza you don't get much and uh as you could have probably guessed financially this is not a good deal all right so there you have it that is the monach world coin grab bag from amazon and as you can tell as an experienced coin collector or if you're a new coin collector watching this video don't buy it don't waste your money on it it is a bad deal now what are the good things about it there are a couple good things about it and the few good things are that it is on amazon and it is a world coin grab bag that a lot of people have access to there are so many people that shop on amazon that might say hey this kind of looks cool for under 10 bucks i can get into the hobby of coin collecting they'll buy it they'll look through it they'll see all sorts of interesting coins and maybe they'll get hooked and that is great for our community however the way that it was executed the fact that there are so many duplicates and of course that there are no coins of any value whatsoever would probably turn off a new collector if i was a kid and i was told that i was getting a grab bag with all different coins from all over the world and seven of them were canadian pennies and there were multiple multiple duplicates i would be pretty disappointed so monach get your act together and stop putting in duplicate coins and then maybe you wouldn't get a terrible thumbs down rating from me otherwise for now avoid it at all costs go to your local coin store support them find other places even buy by the pound on
