free today's episode begins with the commercial that introduces us to the grc or the global repatriation council unlike in one division where we saw the commercials from one's perspective but this one temper after all he introduced himself first as john walker my name is john walker so this extra level of arrogance is because of the mantle that he's carrying cut to germany where sam and bucky are now visiting zemo as i had predicted in my previous breakdown bucky indeed plans on breaking zima out of prison and that's why he told sam to wait while he meets zemo because he knew sam wouldn't approve of this plan then we see bucky and zemo for the first time together since civil war now i'm gonna play a clip so try listening to the score carefully something is still in there i mean so henry jackman has actually used the same background score when bucky and zemo meet for the first time in both civil war and in this episode and as we had expected the first thing zimas says are the words that would activate the winter soldier but of course shuri has fixed bucky's mind which can no longer be controlled and notice zemo is now able to say those triggering words from his memory whereas in civil war he had to read it out from a book bucky then tells zemo someone recreated the super soldier serum and he needs zimo's help to find out who which of course zemo is ready to do because that would mean he escapes this prison and i just love the way they carried out their escape plan i strongly feel this was all zemo's idea who has been making this escape plan for quite some time now but all he needed is a little motivation to get out but sam reminds bucky that breaking out zemo could be a mistake he killed king tichaka and framed bucky for it so sam is reminding bucky even if you forget about it wakundens won't this was directly foreshadowing the ending of this episode which i'll talk about at the end we get some dialects here that i think just shows how much the mcu is evolving let me just walk you through a hypothetical can i walk you through a hypothetical what did you do if i may no apologies now notice the book zemo was reading in his cell it's a book by machiavelli the mecha valley believed as a ruler it was better to be widely feared than to be greatly loved a loved ruler retains authority by obligation while a feared leader rules by the fear of punishment so it makes total sense why someone like zemo is interested in a book like that and the fact that bucky asks zemo what book he's reading and inside the book is a key card indicates that yes this escape plan could be zemo's but bucky was well in honor too we then see how zemo is essentially rich who has all sorts of vintage cars sitting in his garage they're basically here to get ammunition and notice zemo has a custom built gun along with some knives as well he takes his mask that the comic book fans have long been waiting for he also has a butler and a private jet so basically zemo is evil batman he has his own alfred a private jet a vintage collection of expensive cars and custom made ammunition now inside the plane zemo asks bucky who is nakajima but bucky immediately lunges at him and says if he touches the notebook again he will kill him so zemo again showed his sleight of hand by stealing it from bucky's pocket now i was wondering out of all the names in the list why did zemo only mention nakajima but when i watched it in slow motion i got the answer notice bucky has actually circled nakajima's name on the list no other name has such a circle so zima who's essentially one of the smartest in the mcu figured out this name could carry more significance than the others now one last detail from this scene zemo is wearing purple which alludes to his comic accurate costume we then come to know this notebook actually belonged to steve rogers so just like he gave the shield to sam he probably gave this notebook to bucky they talk about the album troubled man by mervyn gaye which apparently bucky doesn't really like that much this of course is a callback to captain america the winter soldier where sam suggested this album to steve rogers marvin gaye 1972 troubleman soundtrack everything you missed jammed into one album i'll put it on the list zemo then says they're going to mad report which in the mcu is an island in the indonesian archipelago now in the comics mad report is a haven for criminals the principality didn't allow other nations to extradite criminals it is best known for wolverine in the comics this crime island first appeared in new mutants number 32 and then became the backdrop for pretty much all of wolverine's solo appearances for the late 80s so it's amazing to see mad report actually existing in the mcu we are not far away from the x-men a cut to grc camp where carly morgenthau is saying goodbye to this dying woman this could be her mother but we come to know this women's actual identity later on in this episode cuts back to mad report which gives all sorts of night city vibe sam is given a fake identity of conrad mack aka the smiling tiger even though he kept complaining about it we have to do something about this i'm the only one who looks like a pimp don't be a [ __ ] pimp only an american would assume a fashion forward black man looks like a dim i'm telling you that zema has one of the best one-liners in this episode you'll notice this picture of the real conrad mac is actually anthony mackie himself in the comics conrad max stole the avengers quinjet which he crashed in mad report where he became a major player in the underworld of crime and notice inside men report there are a lot of posters and billboards written in hindi it's because the main religion in mad report is hinduism in the comics the trial then enter into the brass monkey saloon which is heavily transformed from its comic version but notice just as they were entering the bar in the background we can see this graffiti that says power broker is watching and there's another easter egg for princess bar wolverine in the comics used to visit here back then he still had an eye patch and went by the name patch now inside the bar zemo is putting an act that bucky is still a winter soldier and totally in his control but sadly for sam the poor guy had to drink this in order to keep his cover from getting blown you'll notice not only the bartender was looking at them suspiciously but this guy in the background was keeping an eye as well now zemo and bucky put on their show in order to catch selby's attention this fight proves just how much bucky was holding down when he fought the flag smashers because he wanted to comply with rule number two which is no one should get hurt but notice this lady in the bar was recording bucky now this worries me might come back to hunt bucky later now if you're wondering who selby is let me introduce her to the character in the comics salvi is a minor x-men character his mutant power was mastery over computer binary code basically he could interact with computer machine language now in the mcu the character has got a complete transformation i'm not sure if her character possesses the same power as in the comics but she seems more like a middleman or an informer and notice because her character has massive ties with the x-men in the comics so marvel very cleverly put all those eggs on her wallpaper zima asks her who is recreating the super soldier serum so selby tells them that the super soldier's serum is in mad report and is being created by dr wilfred nagel the power broker appointed him to recreate the serum but sam receives a phone call from his sister sarah which becomes a pivotal moment in this episode selby commands sam to put the call on speaker and realizes he isn't the real smiling tiger she orders her man to shoot all three of them but exactly that moment someone from outside shoots selfie and kills her the shooter is sharon carter who saved all three of their lives notice as soon as salvi dies everyone in madrid poor receives a text on their phone with a bounty on the killer so marvel wasn't lying when they said the show will have a little bit of john wick ask story and i love this badass sharon carter i also took the wings for your ass so that you could save his ass from his ass this is great editing by the way i mean is that something new for the mcu anyway we learned that sharon has been living in mad report for quite some time as she has been on the run since civil war as well while sam and bucky got a pardon she didn't so with no other option she decided to make a living here and notice when sharon said she has a place in high town and asked to go with her daniel bruhl who's playing zemo acted the scene brilliantly he first nodded here we should definitely go there because it's hightown but then sam immediately drags him forward reminding him he's still under their control now they all sit down together discussing the super soldier serum sharon says they should all just ignore it for their own safety but sam insists they won't stop and she should help them sam makes a deal with sharon that if she helps them find dr nagel he will try to clear her name and get her pardon so she can get back to her life in the states they cleared the bionic staring machine and he killed almost everybody he's met i heard that now what i think is sharon could be the power broker if it's not thaddeus ross already think about it this enterprise her massive home and her armed guards are all potential clues it wouldn't be shocking for somebody who has a broker in their name to have an illegal art business and you absolutely would expect a crime boss to have an extremely nice house with a bunch of guards and she has it all plus with only 3 episodes to go i don't think it would make sense if the power broker happens to be an entirely new character now one of the best part of today's episode was zemo dancing at the party daniel bruhl is really killing at this time cut to a container terminal where they have located dr nagle notice the attention to detail here there's a mad report flag on the shipping container we saw this flag on a license plate as well now dr nagle is in container number 4261 but inside they find nothing so to investigate zemo and sam enter all the way inside but notice bucky was standing near the container door this is clever writing this indicates bucky is guarding the door just in case someone closes it and traps them inside which would have been an extremely stupid thing to do but marvel of course didn't let it happen they even made sure bucky looks behind again to see if anyone's coming the writers are handling the characters very seriously bucky and sam interrogate dr nagel while sharon is kicking everyone's ass this hand-to-hand combat was truly well choreographed the throwing of the knives taking a weapon from the enemy to kill the enemy and of course this sort of close-range shooting all of this are a reference to john wick and why wouldn't it be after all this episode was written by derek halstead who wrote all three of the john wick films and noticed one of the bounty hunters has a tattoo in french if you translate it it means we have only scratched the surface so this could indicate the various shades of sharon carter anyway coming back to dr nagle's lab where he reveals everything about the super soldier serum he was brought into hydro's winter soldier program after the five test subjects failed which we saw in civil war so right after the events of civil war dr nagle was appointed even though hydra fell he was recruited by the cia they had a blood sample of an american with traces of the ceremonies system meaning isaiah bradley and after working relentlessly dr nagle was finally able to extract the serum from his blood out of which he recreated the super soldier serum he's the first one to successfully do so after dr erskine in fact his serum is more brutal and subtle it provides superhuman strength without beefing up the body but the reason he's only able to do it now and nobody ever heard of this before is because he turned to dust after thanos snap but as soon as he came back five years later this program was abandoned but he found power broker who are happy to fund his project but carly morgenthau stole those vials that he created and that's why the power broker is after her so this explains the whys the house and wins notice a subtle detail here dr nagle said he was a god because he managed to reinvent the serum i was a god and as soon as he says it zemo walks away from the conversation and tries to look for something he eventually finds a gun and kills the doctor so the fact that nagel believed himself as a god triggered zemo immediately another thing i noticed is that if you somehow manage to produce a serum your end game is definitely getting shot now one of the bounty hunters from outside shoots at the shipping container and it knocks everyone out and here we get one of the most awaiting scenes in the series zemo puts on the deep purple mask and shows the combat skills he has this episode truly did justice to his character now towards the end of the fight bucky breaks this lock bar and throws it aiming at the sweet lady but notice he keeps staring at her for a couple of seconds it's because he's realizing all the work that he put up with his therapist is currently getting undone especially when he's breaking rule number two zemo then comes up with this supercharged car and here we get a callback to a famous scene from civil war you're not gonna move your seat up are you no can you move your seat up no sharon gets into her own car where she tells one of her team members that they have a big problem a couple of problems really again giving us clues that sharon might be playing a bigger role in the series than we think cuts back to a grc supply camp where carly morgenthau is measuring when and how to attack the camp here they verbally acknowledge for the first time that they're all super soldiers curly says dr nagle was killed in mad report so power broker can no longer produce the serum whatever carly has are the last ones so power broker will definitely come backing now another good piece of direction here is when aaron cullerman who plays carly keeps looking at the wing mirror in the middle of the conversation shows how focused she is on the mission even though she's talking to someone else over here john walker and lamar are in berlin where sam and bucky broke out zemo no matter how much you hate this character you have to admit he has good deduction skills sam and bucky would have broken a guy like zemo out of prison that's exactly what i think they did they were just as desperate for leads as we were he's right on the money here because sam and bucky were so desperate they actually broke zima out i know what john is trying to do here is morally wrong implicating sam and bucky of another crime without evidence but isn't he right this time and notice what lamar says here okay so i'll take what happens next isn't a strictly on the bookstop thing is a cat he called him cap whereas he could have easily called him by his first name so it seems as though even lamar is having doubts over this new captain america he's reminding jon that the mantle of captain america is heavy and it comes with moral responsibilities sam bucky and zemo are on their way to riga latvia sam moans about the people who lost their lives to make way for the shield and this is one of the scenes i never thought i'd see in the mcu zemo prepares a meal for bucky and sam cut to jrc supply camp where the flag smashers finally attack and steal all the supplies apparently the grc was sitting on all of the supplies instead of giving it away to people who need it so the flag smashers took matter into their own hands but just before leaving curly blows up the entire building along with people inside carly's teammate does raise this question but she says this is the only language the government understands this really shows her evil side the security guards were only following their orders they didn't deserve to die but curly killed them anyway then we see zemo heading to the memorial of all the people who lost their lives in the battle of sokovia now marvel didn't shoot this scene in latvia but they did their best to replicate and make it more realistic for example this latvian cafe name translates to non-standard cafe there's another one right by the alley now if you watch the episode you know what happens at the end a member of the dora milage is following zemo because he has broken out a prison as sam said at the beginning of the episode wakandans didn't forget what zemo did they still want to punish him for assassinating their king to chaka so this episode becomes the only one in the mcu where all three fictional countries are mentioned sokovia wakanda and mad report you'll notice while walking alongside zemo and sam bucky already looked at the ground twice because he noticed the wakandan kimoyo beats he follows it all the way until he meets aeo from duromulage she was t'challa's bodyguard it's incredible how marvel connected the show to wakanda i couldn't have thought that in a million years but this emphasizes how big of a deal civil war was whatever zemo did he will have to suffer consequences and that's it this would be my breakdown of episode 3 of falcon the winter soldier episode 4 is again gonna be 53 minutes and we'll have more of john walker and hoskins but something tells me that zemo might end up being mcu's doug judy no doubt no no don't no doubt now if you like this video
