hey there i don't really have an intro plan but i wanted to film something well it looked like this like my hair and this outfit i mean can we make this a thing let's before we begin i'd like to throw a nugget of gratitude out to today's sponsors everyone's hair is unique like fingerprints my fingerprints are especially unique not to brag it's just i've never really used a thimble so they kind of look like dalmatians super damaged like my hair i have dry damaged hair that tends towards brassiness and i don't like brass i mean sure like anyone else i like when my dad occasionally wakes me up with a spot of trumpet playing but i don't want my hair to look like that with most shampoos i can either address the brassiness or address the damage but never both and sometimes the frustration of being so torn almost leads me to the point of no return but then i remember function of beauty exists to get these custom hair care products you'll first have to take a quiz but don't worry this is one quiz you actually won't get an f on well you will but instead of fail it'll stand for function of mccarra or your name or your nickname or whatever name you most identify as you choose what's printed on the bottle when taking this quiz choose your hair goals i chose fix split ends strengthen color protection volumize and reduce brassiness i must say i was very pleased with their purple shampoo with other toning shampoos i've noticed that sometimes i just get purple patches in my hair functional beauty shampoo does not do this yeah i for sure just said function of booty well if they ever release a line of custom-made underwear we've got a name their shampoo makes my hair look evenly toned and paired with the conditioner pretty dang shiny this is honestly the first condition i've ever used that i've truly noticed a difference in the shine and softness of my hair which i know sounds like a line sounds like i'm being paid to say it which i kind of am but it doesn't make it any less true look video evidence the shine is especially noticeable when i use this function of my cara hair serum functional beauty uses clean safe vegan ingredients and they test only on willing participants which means they never test on animals what do you think of that gear so follow the link in my description to get 20 off your first order of function of frederico or function of dylan your mom whatever your name is and thanks again to function of beauty for sponsoring the video that we're about to get back to right now so you want to see me make a dress out of pistachio shells huh well here's a different video today's video will basically be the mother of all thrift flips don't worry i'll make the pistachio dress someday but i'm just very nervous i need more time to get out of my shell but for now i'm just going to show you how i turned this into this this into this that into that and that and that these into this that and that and then this into that i'd like to introduce you to this it's called a pillowcase a commonly used sleeping accessory here in the western hemisphere we're going to use it to make a corset-style top i began by cutting off the trim and setting it aside intending to later use it to shove in the mouths of people who think it's okay to talk during movies i folded the thing in half and cut out a general corset shape the thing i love about corsets with the lace-up back and the boning is you don't have to be too particular about it fitting you exactly it'll kind of pull your body into it forcing your flesh to conform to its will make an identical front and back piece and then cut the back piece right down the middle the great thing about these sleeping accessories is that they're already lined so just pin the lining to the outer fabric and sew it inside out sew along the neckline the armpit lines and right across the bottom leaving the sides open flip it right side out then stare in curiosity at your hunching father remember that questioning your elders is disrespectful after giving stitches to the back panel you're going to add the boning i'm going to be using these zip ties that i bought at the dollar tree but if you're a purist and you need your whole outfit to be completely thrifted you can just donate the zip ties to goodwill and then buy them back now pin in place and sew do you ever go to sew something and then remember how hideously ugly your kitchen counters are and become rendered creatively paralyzed yes i'm just gonna have to get over sewing this right now and go fix my kitchen counters [Music] this is when i sewed along the sides of all those zip ties tucking them snugly in place and this is when i looked at the back and realized that a solid color with contrasting thread honestly would have been way cuter slide at least two bones into the back but if you don't have a spine i'd recommend adding a few extra now place the back panels onto the front right sides kissing each other then sew along the sides and the top of the straps you might find that sewing a circle in it is a fun little challenge here i'm marking the holes for my grommets each one two fingers width apart not sure if i'll ever have the patience to teach you how to apply grommets so i'd look it up while you're looking up grommets better yet look up wallace and gromit it's a claymation tv show from england it's really good anyway later in this video i'll show you a sewing alternative to grommets now i want to make a ruffled multi-layer skirt out of this fabric which means we're going to have to get the fabric off the shelf lovely i have some strategic tips on how to do that first take a strap as long as a cat's tail and wrap it around your fabric then loop some ribbon through the holes at the end and tug voila now you'll never have to struggle getting something off the shelf again now to make this skirt get out a queen size bed sheet that you thrifted years ago and wound onto one of the mini fabric bolts that you fished out of the trash back when you worked at hobby lobby it's going to be constructed out of three long strips the first should be twice the width of your waist and as long as you want to make it it's a free country mostly this will be the top tier of your skirt now fold down the very top of the top of your skirt and sew a tunnel just big enough for some elastic to fit through now cut out your second tier which should be as long as three times the width of your waist finally cut out the third tier which should be as long as four times the width of your waist now sew a wide basting stitch along the top of the bottom tier of your skirt aka the longest tier now tug on just one of the dangling threads and gather up the fabric all bunchally until it fits perfectly into the bottom of the second tier of the skirt then flip those right sides facing each other sew along the top and repeat those steps with the second tier onto the top tier now that the instructional part is out of the way i just want to tell you guys i have been having such a problem with ants in my house i just brushed my hair and two live ants fell out of my hair now if you have any tips to getting rid of ants without killing them that would be great i try not to kill bugs because one time i went on a fly killing spree and then i started having nightmares that everywhere i turned i would see these life-sized fly families having funerals and i was like oh my gosh what would i do if i found my family member stuck to sticky tape look at that one are you gonna make it at the top with that strip you can't why because the kitchen floor is ugly oh all right when laying this floor as per my dad's insistence we laid the towel so that they were really close like actually touching each other but heck i figured out after laying my rv floor is if you leave a little bit of space in between each tile then you never have to use a dust pan again because you just sweep the floor and it all gathers in those little cracks once your kitchen's had as much work done as dolly parton it's time to start in on that skirt's matching top pull two layers of fabric in half then cut out this general shape then spread it out and fold both of the edges into the center you'll want to fold right along each of the major bust points will i ever not be uncomfortable saying that then fold that in half and create a very slight ancient egyptian sword shape you know like the ones from prince of egypt and if you've never seen prince of egypt add that to your queue right after you watch walls and grass actually just go back and repeat your whole childhood because i have a feeling it wasn't a good one now what you're seeing here is your front pieces and your lining pieces starting with the outer layer sew the side panels to the center panels right sides together right along that egyptian sword shape now before attaching the lining to the front you're going to cut out two strips of fabric as long as staffs and then you're going to sew them and turn them into snakes because you're playing with the big boy's nose another prince of egypt reference you don't get it it's fine attach those extremely long snakes to the front of the top of your top facing down then lay the lining panel on top of that right sides facing each other and sew along the top and heck why not the bottom two while you're at it then flip it right sides out and sew the side strut now to make the lace-up back take the ends of your straps and snip off six strips about as long as taylor swift's fingers which appear to be pretty average in length pin those down in loops until they resemble the great sea serpent of casco bay to wear you're just going to crisscross those straps and feed them through your sea monster's coils now to start in on this four dollar two-piece set that gives me total napoleon dynamite grandma vibes i was kind of attached to the shirt the way it was so i started it on the pants folding them in half and cutting them into shorts i tried throwing away the excess fabric but then remembered i don't have trash service yet so i'd better make something out of them i got the pant legs open to assess how much fabric i had to work with deducing that it wasn't much and i should probably make something like a boho swim top out of them i cut one of the pant legs into strips and pieced together something of a waistband or rib cage band sewed it into a tube and turned it right side out then i cut the other pant leg in half folded both of those halves in half and sewed an elongated upside down question mark along the fold cut off the excess open it up ironed down and hemmed the edges then listened as my friend ruthie recited her maid of honor speech for her friend's wedding i went up to you while you were getting a drink of water at the water fountain i sewed an elastic to the edges for extra support then glued lace over it just for because i have some extra release from an old project can't throw it away because i don't know how to be an adult and set up trash service now this t-shirt hack is literally so simple that i don't know how to explain it so here's a little song [Music] now when i went to the thrift store and saw this rug i knew i had to get it and make either a shirt and skirt or a dress out of it because it totally expressed my personality like being that i let people walk all over me now because the nature of the fabric isn't very stretchy and i didn't want to add a zipper i just put a panel of spandex fabric in the back then when making straps i couldn't pick it in color so i followed grandpa jj's advice and braided three different colors together it's always best to sew your straps onto the back first then try it on and pin it where you want it to hit in the front quick note for if you're ever working with a fabric like this is you need to sew a line above where you're going to cut before you cut it or it will fray and i didn't do this when working on the skirt because i was sitting watching the oscars while cutting it all the costumes this year elements are fantastic but still emma better win emma now listen ma rainey's costumes were gorgeous and very accurate to the 1920s but it just so happens 1920s garment construction was super simple and the whole thing takes place over the course of like two days so very few costumes are actually worn emma however features dozens of costumes and also emma emma was probably the most well-costed movie i've ever seen in my 25 years of living and honestly i still just have a lot of pent up banger over last year's winner but i'm fine really and every everything is fine something went horribly wrong it ripped and i kind of love it do we do we love this no we actually don't so we're going to switch our focus to making an exposed seam patchwork shirt out of t-shirts draw and color out your plan first then using chalk copy that design onto your base t-shirt cut out pieces of that base shirt one at a time then trace and replace those pieces with more colorful ones now i hope you're good at tetris because i don't like having subscribers that aren't good at video games now most exposed team shorts are done with a serger which is a complicated little machine that makes things look like this and how we're going to fake that with a regular sewing machine is by using a zigzag stitch and reversing over what you already sewed multiple times now one last quick little outfit to make before i show you all the reveals we're going to turn these flared yoga pants into a little hiking outfit first mark where you want to cut off your pant legs i wanted to make mine biker shorts then with the excess fabric you have left trace the sports bra that you like the fit of make sure that the front of your sports bra is two layers thick sew it inside out with a zigzag stitch and throw some elastic around the edges if you want some extra support or if you're also planning on using it as a slingshot after flipping it all right side out and sewing the front and back together cut a couple teeny tiny slits on the innermost layer of fabric and slide some pads inside now please readjust the tape you've been using to hold your eyelids open because it's time for a bunch of grand reveals [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] if i had to pick a favorite thing i made in this video i think this would be it in fact i think i'm going to wear this dress to my birthday party in a couple days it gives me major me vibes and the party theme will be me i'm going to have everybody dress up as me which i know sounds a little bit narcissistic i don't even know chick-fil-a had bacon i thought they only had chicken bacon's a condiment all right here's some more reveals i must say i'm pretty dang pleased with how everything i made turned out especially with how versatile and mixable and matchable they all are kind of but i want to hear from you guys which of these outfit pieces is your favorite and which one should i burn slowly under magnifying glass so many feet have been on this church [Music] since you made it this far i'm going to treat you to a little bit of behind the scenes trivia did you notice that my voiceovers in this video weren't very humorous or jubilant well it's because right before recording them i found out how much i have to pay in taxes and like i said i brushed two ants out of my hair how can you be in a good mood after that
