well hello there if you're one of my subscribers I know it's been a while and I apologize but if you're new here let me introduce myself my name is Katie and I am a owner an artist behind salvaged by Kay Scott I make my living right here out of my own home taking found and thrifted items of furniture fixing them up and restyling them to fit into today's home decor trends I'm just about to get started making over this little occasional table and I thought I'd bring you guys along with me today I'm gonna be doing one of my favorite finishes it's a whitewashed wood look every single time that I've done this finish on a piece in the past I've gotten a thousand and one questions about it so I thought I would take this opportunity to share my process with you guys like I said I've done this finish a few times actually this is the finish that I used on one of my very favorite pieces it is this buffet that I painted just over a year ago I stripped the whole buffet down to the bare wood and then applied my whitewashing finish overtop this table however is already a great neutral wood tone not too dark not too late and it doesn't have a really glossy finish on it so I'm going to be able to just paint right over what I've already got I'm also going to give this adorable little milking stool that I found at the thrift store this week a quick update I'm gonna get rid of this really grungy gross upholstered top and give it a fresh coat of paint for both of these pieces today I am going to be using my country chic paint it's a clay base paint and is vo sea free so I am safe to use it indoors I think I'm gonna go green on my little milking stool so I'm going to mix up some dune grass and londres some leftovers that I had from a couple of other projects and see if I can get a green that I like for the stool and for the whitewash finish on the table I'm going to be using vanilla frosting alright wait wash first to do this I'm going to take my vanilla frosting country chic paint you can do this with any style chalk paint probably even a latex paint would work I'm going to pour some out into a separate cup and add some water alright I've just mixed the water and the paint together with my paintbrush and you can see I've got a super runny paint consistency here this is the wash part we're not going for a full coverage here we just want to give this piece of furniture a sort of limed antique defect all right you're also going to want a couple of rags for this something soft and lint-free I'm going to take my paint and water mixture and brush it all over at the top I'm gonna leave my watered down paint on there just for a few seconds then I'm gonna go in with my soft rag and wipe it back you want to wipe with the woodgrain and your brush strokes so that everything is going in the same direction hard to tell the difference right that's because I didn't let my paints it very long the longer you let it start to dry onto that surface the more it will stick to the wood you don't want to let it dry completely because then you'll just have a yucky finish I'm gonna go ahead do this process again and see what I get a really nice thing about this technique is that it's totally buildable you can go back and keep doing the same process over and over again letting it dry amounts of time in between until you've built up the finish that you love and there we go you can see I've built up just a slight white haze over the surface of the wood now let's get those legs you want to make sure that you're really using your paintbrush to push that paint into all of the details all of these cracks and crevices will hold on to the paint when you wipe it back and really make this finish pop okay I've got two legs done now I'm going to start wiping those back before I start painting the other two legs reason being this paint is starting to dry and I want to get it wiped back before it gets too chalky if you ever get to the point where you feel like your paint has dried a little too much and it's not wiping back as easily as you were expecting don't worry you can just grab a little mr. bottle of water spray down your paint to reactivate it and then go in with your cloth [Music] I think the thing that I love most about this white washing finish is that it's really organic it's supposed to look blotchy and splotchy so perfection is not required here all right this table is done for now I'm gonna let it dry thoroughly for 24 hours and then I will come back in with a natural furniture wax and seal it all up now it's time to mix up a custom green color for my milking stool make sure you hang around till the end of the video so you can see the finished photos of these pieces all staged up [Music] the paint on this adorable little stool is dry I am just going to give it a little bit of a distress with some 220 grit sandpaper this thing is so stinking cute all right I'm gonna go ahead and move these guys upstairs into my kitchen staging area and take some glamour shots you guys I am so excited with how both of these projects turned out today if you're not already subscribed to my channel please make sure that you tap the
