hey guys welcome or welcome back if you are new here my name is Katie I am the owner and artist behind salvaged by K. Scott it is a beautiful sunny day here and I'm just about to toss my hair up and head out into the garage to work on a dresser for me usually I sell all of my restyled furniture pieces but this one is just calling to me it needs to stay here at home I have no idea where I'm going to use it in our home yet but it's definitely going to hang around here for at least a little while anyways this dresser was generously gifted to me from my neighbor across the street Ian had already spent hours stripping off the original finish and sanding it down to bare wood so the end results of this flip is going to be not so different from the beginning I'm gonna work on getting out some of these stains these are results from being abandoned in his garage for a little while but nothing we can't fix I gave the top surface of this dresser a really good sanding with some 100 grit sandpaper then I switched to a 220 grit sandpaper to go over the rest of the piece I am going to be reusing the hardware that came with this piece but for now I need to get it out of the way so I can paint I think the inside of these drawers could use a little freshen up with some sandpaper to I know you can't see it here but I think it's definitely worth mentioning you need to always wear a respirator with a particle filter on it when you're sanding so much better they look brand-new now the top of the dresser still isn't perfect but I'm going to be able to hide a lot of these imperfections with a milk paint wash I'm going to use my favorite shock to Interiors milk paint in the colors Magnolia pier and sea smoke to mix up a custom wash to put over this dresser traditional milk paint comes in a powdered form that's mixed with water to create a paint regularly the water to paint ratio for milk paint is one-to-one but since I want this to be a really translucent finish that I can see all of the wood grain through I'm going to be adding a lot more water this is about one part milk paint powder to four parts water I'm going to give it a really good mix up and a few minutes to let all of the pigments dissolve I used a zebra fan brush to apply my milk paint wash all over the top surface now I'm just evening out my brush strokes so that everything is going in the same direction and the direction of the wood grain once I was done applying the paint I just let it sit on the surface and soak down into the wood and now we repeat the same thing on the sides and here is this milk paint wash nice and dry you can see it just evened out all of us blotchiness in the wood finish I went over the whole piece with some very fine sandpaper just to make sure everything was extra smooth and working in any areas where my paint was a little too opaque I'm going to be sealing this piece with shock toh interiors hemp oil it's an all-natural finish that will dry to be water resistant and provide a lot of nourishment to this dry old wood you should definitely pour your hemp oil out into a separate container and apply it with a brush or a clean rag I got a little excited here and just started pouring it on the surfaces it still worked great you want to leave your hemp oil sitting on your surface for fifteen to thirty minutes then you can go back with another clean rag and remove any excess that hasn't absorbed down into your finish hemp oil is a great sealer for milk paint chalk paint bear wood or previously finished wood surfaces that need a little refresh this whitewashed bear wood effect is super on-trend right now I love this dresser and now all that's left to do is figure out where I'm gonna put it thank you so much for hanging out with me again today as I took this rundown old piece of furniture and made it into something beautiful again if you love furniture painting and upcycling please make sure that you give this video a big thumbs up and if you haven't already done it tap that subscribe button I'll catch you guys next time you
