[Music] welcome to my channel if you're new my name is christina and in today's video i want to show you how i completely restored an old old dining room table from i think around the 1960s and i was really going for this restoration hardware vibe so i'm going to walk you through the entire process techniques and supplies and everything i did to restore this table so let's get started i was able to find this table on the facebook marketplace and i've actually got this the chairs and the hutch all for two hundred dollars so it's been sitting in my garage for quite some time and now's the time because i could really use a nice big work table and it's one of those tables with the drop leaves in and it's going to be absolutely beautiful it just needs a new style so i've dropped the leaves back into the table and i want to go ahead and get started on sanding the top and the sides and i'm going to start with an 80 grit sandpaper with my orbital sander there wasn't any heavy damage done to this table just some light surface scratches and for the top varnish as well as the stain it actually came off super quickly so that was kind of nice so i'm just going to go ahead and take all of this off as well as the sides so i contemplated on sanding the bottom half as well but i think i'm going to go with a different look for the bottom half but what i do find super helpful and a lot less expensive than buying sanding blocks is just to fold my sanding discs so this way i can get into the little corners and edges really easily and as i say it's a lot less expensive so i definitely had a few different ideas and looks that i was thinking about but i have been completely obsessed with restoration hardware so i was kind of looking through their website just for some inspiration it's a fantastic way for new inspirational looks and ideas as well so i decided i was going to take this wood deco piece off the bottom and i just thought it would just give a more modern look once we get into the style and all of the techniques that we're going to be doing for this table because the lower half was so circular and a lot of wood details i didn't want to get into all of the furniture strippers so i came up with a different idea on what i was going to do with the base i'm going to use the chalk paint by annie sloan in the graphite which is a really dark gray almost a black as well as the french linen being a taupe color i always start with a moist paint brush and you just want to start with a little bit of paint because it can go a long way with chalk paint the key when you're dealing with a lot of angles is to make sure that you smooth all your corners so you don't get your paint clumped up because chalk paint is so thick you want to make sure you've got a spray water bottle on hand and this will help move your paint around a lot easier and you'll use a lot less paint [Music] he's poor puppies oh look at that he's looking for poodle cookies [Music] once this is completely cured i'm going to go ahead and do the graphite wash so you kind of want to build some layers and this is going to help kind of give that woodish kind of tone to it so the trick that you always want to do with chalk paint is you want to make lots of textures when you're doing a color wash because you're really not going to see the brush strokes but what you're going to do is create low points for that wash to sit in and that is what's going to give a really really cool organic effect and i'm going to show you up close and personal exactly what i'm talking about so you will want lots of random brush strokes but you don't need a thick amount of paint again you don't want your paint to be all clumped up but you do want it to smooth out but still leave some high and low points in the thickness of the paint this is going to make sense when we get into the next step when i do a paint color wash i always use 50 paint 50 water and you always want to stir it really really well i started a small little sample area there on the corner of the leg and i felt it needed to be a little bit more black so i was going with the dark dark gray but just a little bit darker than the graphite so i added another tablespoon of athenian black which is more of a jet black [Music] what i want this paint wash this graphite paint wash to do is to set into the low points of the french linen and this is what's going to give it the very natural neutrals but almost kind of still go with a warm wood look as i mentioned i didn't want to get into the furniture strippers and sanding with all of this detail and curved circular points to the base so i thought this was the easier route to go and still be able to achieve the finish and the look that i wanted when i use color washes or paint washes i generally like to use the ragging technique which means the rags that i'm using or paper towels that i'm using i will just dab at it because i want that color wash to be sitting in the low points i don't want it to be wiped back this is going to create a lot of dimension with it being in the low points and then your rag is going to be tapping it off on the high points of your base coat [Music] so i wanted to give you some ariels of the differences of the stages of what i'm doing and why i'm doing it so you can see that honey color tone in the wood on the oak and then the difference of what the base is right now but i'm going to go ahead and start my color washes on the top [Music] what's going to be really important for the tabletop as well as the table sides i'm going to do the sides the exact same as i'm going to do the top and the key and what i've always done to be successful with any type of color washing is always make sure you have a spray water bottle on hand the reason is is i always start with the 50 50 paint to water mix but if you're working on a raw wood surface what happens is is the paint will automatically absorb right away and for whatever reason you feel it's a little too concentrated you can always just spray water exactly where you've applied the paint wash and that's going to dilute it even more and give you some play so you can wipe it back even more so it's just playing with the tone and the level of concentration right at the immediate time of application so that way you're not having to overwork yourself i hope that makes sense it's just something i learned when i started doing color washes it always applies differently to different surfaces so the advice that i'm giving you right now is because i'm working on raw wood and my heater just went on so that's that climbs up washes can be messy so i always wear gloves as well as i have everything ready so i started with the french linen so this is the 50 50. i'm gonna go ahead now the key too is when you're working on raw wood you want to wash with the grain try not to go the opposite so whether it's vertical horizontal doesn't matter just wherever the grain is going make sure that you're wiping back it doesn't matter if you're going back and forth as long as it's with the grain so let's get started [Music] so before i finish off i just wanted to give you an ariel of the one color wash of just the french linen versus the natural tone so you can see that variation just in one color wash the difference that you can make with just water-based chalk paints and still create a beautiful natural wood element i'm going to go ahead and do two french linen washes on here i love what it's doing but i need it to just be a little bit richer in tone so i want everything to be cohesive together so it it had a nice raw but weathered restoration hardware kind of look to it so i'm going to show you up close and personal the difference between the one wash and the two washes so this can give you some inspiration on any wood table or old dining room heirloom set when i've seen the amount of dining room sets and they're just gorgeous but it's also about repurposing and restyling them so they can fit with your decor or your new style perspectives and what you have going on with your decor and i can't tell you enough from all my experience in paint washes how important it is to stir chalk paint because it will automatically with that much water in it will automatically sink to the bottom every section that i would do that's why i generally will always leave something to stir inside my paint wash so i can just keep doing it as i proceed on with my paint wash so super super important so this is an ariel so you have a good perspective of what it looks like with two awashes of the french linen and also in contrast to what's going on on the base so everything is coming together really really well and again really important for each color wash to be completely dry [Music] look at how cute you are oh yes you look very picose yes you do and you look very vacuzy oh oh my goodness it's mummy sleep time if for any reason you've done a color wash and a few days have gone by and you're like i don't like it i don't like what's going on that's okay don't don't panic it's no problem at all all you need to do is grab yourself a small bucket with some tsp and just wash it off just remember that until it's completely sealed it's always easy to change your mind now that the table is completely dry i'm gonna go ahead and carry on with the graphite chalk paint wash and we're going to add in another new tone to this table [Music] even though that i just finished a section of this wash and it's still moist i absolutely love where it's going it's really starting to come together [Music] really helpful hint when everything's coming together and you love it you have to wait for everything to dry once in a while i've had it happen there's a certain streak or just something especially when you're dealing with a very large furniture piece like a dining table like this i always bag my rags as well as the brushes i use these are still loaded with paint wash and these can still be used and you want them slightly moist it's really helpful because you're changing something so it's more cohesive i just really recommend saving these waiting for everything to dry i sometimes will even just keep these till the next day before i seal everything so that way i can go over the entire piece and if i need to make a few corrections i don't have to go and make all new color wash waist paint etc because this is you'll have enough here to fix what you're going to need so just a little hint on any color wash projects i'm going to give this a couple of hours to be a completely dry and then i'm going to go ahead and put some white wax onto it the main reason i decided to go ahead with the white wax onto it is because i actually would like to bring out the wood grain onto the table top as well as provide some continuity between the table top as well as the bottom so it looks like it coincides together applying the wax can be done with a brush but if you don't have a waxing brush you can always just use a lint-free cloth as well but as you can see how everything pulls together with the white wax versus without the white wax you could do a white wash finish but i wanted to use the wax because this is also going to seal and protect the table as well if you wanted a more durable and even stronger finish for a protective coat i would recommend to use the lacquer and it comes in a gloss as well as a matte finish that you could put for the table top i've completed a few tables using chalk paints and i find that the clear wax and or white wax can leave a very very durable finish so it is a really good option to use but lacquer will do it as well so here's a before again [Music] [Music] thank you so much for
