in this video i'm going to show you three very simple ways to help you strike your irons ridiculously better and to stop thinning your irons there's nothing worse in golf you've hit a great tee shot down the fairway and you come up to a shot and you end up thinning it and what particularly means is you've made contact with the golf ball with that leading edge that front edge of the golf club certainly when it happens with irons and wedges it feels horrible like your hands hurt when you hit a thin shot the ball comes out super super low and it particularly doesn't go very far so we need to help fix it so number one the first thing we're going to talk about is ball position this is really important players who typically will thin the golf ball sometimes struggle with where the ball position should be in relation to their feet and when i see golfers in it typically the ball position is too far forward in the stance so i've got seven iron here in my hands and with that ball position there being so close to my left foot the bottom of the golf swing is going to take place behind the ball there's two outcomes to this you're either going to hit the ground first or you'd have trained your swing to not hit the ground and therefore hits up on the golf ball as soon as you hit up you'll catch that leading edge and thin it so ball position's really important i'm just going to give you a little quick guide if we're in sand wedge and wedges so lofty golf clubs have the ball position absolutely in the middle of your stance so if you're playing wedges that have them there as you then go up the set so into your mid-irons like you're seven the ball position can go a roughly about one ball closer to your left foot as you're starting to much longer irons like your four and your five iron you can start to go a little bit further towards your left foot probably two ball positions left of center and as you get to your woods you would start to go much more towards your left heel but we don't need to worry too much about that so with the seven line here the ball position wants to be just in front of center so as i take my stance i put the club behind the golf ball that club is right in the middle of my feet right now i'm going to take a small step here on my left slightly bigger with my right and as you can see there that ball position is just left side of center that's perfect this is tip number one ball position is key and it can help you strike the ball much better [Music] number two is weight distribution so players who thin the golf ball who don't strike it as well as they can do will often have a tendency of having the weight during the downswing too much on the back foot almost trying to visualize this almost trying to lean back and lift the golf ball up in the air as you start trying to lift the golf ball up in the air this club starts to lean backwards you lean backwards and again you'll either hit the ground and fat it or you'll hit up on the golf ball and fit it so when we think about weight distribution if you struggle striking it really good and you don't quite hit the ball first on the ground after try this little top tip once you've got your ball position correct just in front of center with the mid iron i want you to feel like the middle of your chest is just pushing slightly towards your left hand side so i want you to feel like you've almost got 65 of weight on your left foot if you can keep that weight on that left foot and swing and keep it there so what i'm going to do here you'll see i've just pushed my weight a little bit towards my left hand side i'm just favoring that side as i swing back i've not moved off the golf ball and as i come down i can then hit the ball first the ground after and there's no reason why i should fat it or thin it so if you want to strike the ball better have a little bit of weight on your left hand side keep it on your left hand side and you can you're going to feel like you're almost on top of the golf ball a little bit more that way again you can strike ball then turf and if you get that right instantly your strike is going to be better it's really important on tight links golf like this i'm actually here at andrew's driving range at the moment it's great off lynx turf because you need that really good connection last thing we've got one more that i think is very very important [Music] number three shaft angle at impact again players who will catch the ball behind thin it and fat it will have a tendency of getting the club to almost scoop underneath the golf ball the wrist will bend and the player will be trying to lift and help the golf ball up in the air the club is going to help you get the ball up in there you don't have to do that so what we're trying to look for here when we're hitting the iron shots we're aiming to have the shaft the grip of the golf club ahead of the golf ball when we make contact notice here on my left arm my wrist angle the golf club is all in one dead straight line that's perfect that's what we're design that's exactly what we want you'll see the best players in the world repeatedly time and time again getting into this position my weight slightly on my left hand side i've got the handle of the golf club slightly forward left arm wrist shaft angle is all nice and straight what we don't want to see is a position that looks like this coming into impact where the the wrist has ended up flipping and cuffing where the weight's too much on the right hand side because you're just going to hit behind the golf ball you lose power so this is a really top tip i don't mind when you're hitting irons it's almost preset this position almost slightly have the handle forward at the setup position and then try and recreate it again at impact the feeling you're gonna have is almost like you're trying to de-loft the golf shot try to hit it lower so slightly lean it forward at impact sorry it's set up trying to return back into that same position [Music] and that's the best of the three you won't fat it you'll strike it much cleaner you'll strike it pure get more distance you'll be more consistent you'll play better golf we'll see you next time
