hello everyone welcome back to my channel my name is iffy if you're new here I make content all around postgrad lifestyle chasing your dream life and the mindset to attract what you actually want in life today we are talking about one of my new favorite obsessions and something I didn't think was this easy I just have to share podcasting podcasting starting your podcast talking about things that make you light up things you're passionate about these are all things that I've obviously been really into for a long time now expressing my ideas and my thoughts on YouTube all of the apps but I never considered podcasting I don't know why it actually came up on a whim between me and my fiance we were always having conversations about chasing your dream life going after a particular unique lifestyle and kind of the mindset that we have to take on as new entrepreneurs and it dawned on us that like it would suck if we didn't have each other to talk about these things with so we decided to create our own podcast called the get paid to live podcast and it started off just as an idea and then it slowly became a reality and once I figured out how to do it I was it's just like this is so much more fun than I ever thought it would be it's a lot easier in terms of like setup and production and not only that we are starting to get traction which is like crazy cuz I always thought podcasting was like a long game kind of thing I didn't think I would get any traction really until like years in I'm not saying that we have a crazy following but for something that we started filming in September started posting in October and is something we've only done for six episodes this just brought in so much more reward than I ever thought and and if you're somebody who has wanted to share an idea start talking about something start building an audience slowly I highly suggest you start your own and today we're going to talk about how you can do that at home without having crazy equipment without having a studio and all that crazy stuff I'm just like every other girly who is confused by Tech and doesn't really know what to get how to get it and thankfully my fiance is really into Tech and ab and music so he kind of had an idea we just put our heads together and we just made this beautiful easy podcasting baby if you haven't already be sure to subscribe so you don't miss another upload and let's get into the video okay so I'm going to break it down in three parts cuz I feel like that's the easiest to digest and understand this is kind of how I think about our podcast there's mainly the content which requires a lot of producing like this is the meat this is the bulk the concept of your podcast and then I would say there's the production side of it so this is the equipment this is the design this is the everything that kind of brings all those Concepts to life and then the last part is distribution so this is how you're getting the podcast out there so people can find it and I always thought this was the most complicated step because I'm just like how do people know about your podcast like how does it get out there and for some context and background I'm not somebody who listened to like a million podcasts and like knew everything about podcasting I'm really fresh into it and I had listened to a few before I had some favorites but honestly prior to starting this particular podcast I hadn't listened to one in like month so that just shows you the kind of skill and requirements you need to start this thing not many and there will be haters who tell you you shouldn't start a podcast or why is everybody starting a podcast we actually got this very comment but I don't really see how it's any different than all the other social medias just like Instagram and YouTube and Tik Tok like everybody makes an account because they have something to share like we all have something to say so do not feel discouraged just because you're not some celebrity or you have an audience or a fan base like this could be the start of yours I do have some background and content creation and freelancing with social media Market in so I kind of Applied that to it but all of the things I'm going to cover today are things you can learn just enough just to get your podcast out there you don't have to be an expert at any of this trust me I'm just all about people spreading the message that's really important to them their why things that they want other people to know and they can help other people with and I feel like this is a great way for you to do it and also really organize your thoughts like I was shocked with how well I was able to put together Concepts I had been thinking about forever you'd be surprised how interesting you are and how much you have to say about about that specific topic or industry because sometimes you just never have a reason to put it all out there organize it for other people to understand but this could be the thing that kind of like gives you almost like your your own Theory like your own way of life and I really just I'm obsessed with that what makes people authentic so we're going to start with the first pillar which is the content which I feel like is obviously the most important part of your podcast what you're talking about because you can have all the equipment in the world you can have all of the social media in the world if the cont content is not authentic or real or doesn't speak to a specific person it's just hard for people to resonate with the topics with the episodes so I have about four tips in the section and these are things I've all done before and I've seen and heard from other podcasters so I think they're pretty legit you guys let me know number one it's going to sound silly you need to live life I'm just a fan of this in general this is something I would tell my clients when I was a social media manager and a consultant you have to have something real to talk about because if people don't feel like you're being authentic or they're not getting a lot of value from your content it's the easiest way to have content that flops so living life in a way that's authentic to you getting out there following your passions following your dreams doing things people haven't done before I know there's a general rule like you want to educate entertain Inspire but I feel like in my opinion there are two key ways to getting content that kind of goes somewhere with your audience or with people it's impressing yourself and impressing others I feel like if you are impressing yourself you are living true to who you are you're going after the goals that are hard and scar and scare you you're talking about things that might be controversial but you passionately believe you are just making a statement in a way that makes you feel more like yourself it makes other people feel heard and seen so I feel like the easiest way to do that is to be yourself whatever you're passionate about whatever you're putting off start doing it start thinking about it start reading it start studying it these are things that make you interesting and actually create ideas in your head when you're consuming information in a positive way not Doom scrolling you are actually able to put your brain to work on something creative and not just like a Netflix show gives you that kind of like Innovative unique authentic touch that people are like wo I've never thought about it in that way or I've never heard about this in general this is how we started our podcast we were having conversations about our experience as new entrepreneurs get paid to live is a phrase that I created when I started my company my failed Consulting business but it was based on a mission that I believe I in my life want to get paid to do what I love and just live I want to get paid to breathe and I feel like that's something that most entrepreneurs are striving for even if that's not exactly what they would say we're trying to get to a new reality that we create through our businesses there's a lot of emotions and struggles you go through in that process and we were like okay let's find a place where we can put all this information talk about the things that people like us are going through and what would attract other people so we have Community together my second tip is to listen to podcasts just to get a general structure I'm not really a fan of like consuming too much content cuz I feel like it stunts your creativity sometimes but just listening to how other people structure their podcast just getting an idea of how it's set up I think if you have no knowledge can be very helpful another thing is to do a little bit of research on podcast so watching this video watching other videos I watched one from Katie steley and Latasha Dames about how to start a podcast and it just helped me see all the different options because there are several different options you can do just audio you can do audio and video you can make Clips you can make shorts you can distribute it in certain ways so just seeing what's out there and then taking what's realistic and authentic to you after that you don't have to do what everyone else is doing and my third tip is to kind of do a general plan or outline of the podcast and what it's going to be about so this is something I kind of do with my businesses and my fiance does with his business we just kind of do this in general even with our life just kind of having some like North Star and to me the key key things if you don't do anything else is to have a mission vision and values the other thing we added on was an AA or an ideal customer Avatar I.E your audience who are you talking to just having an idea of where you're going and how this podcast can service people that could just be very helpful when you have so many options to narrow down to what's actually true to your brand to your podcast to your audience to you it also helps you create episode ideas helps you choose and decide which guest you're going to have things like that and people tend to skip over this with a lot of things even with their businesses but I feel like this is the most important thing and we took an hour we got coffee just to do this and I have no regrets I've talked about this in other pieces of content so I won't go into too much detail but a mission is basically something that you do if you look up company's missions you'll see examples of this but I like to think of this as like what do I do on a daily basis and what is like this endless problem that I'm going to solve and then there's going to be your vision this is bigger picture with my product with my service with my community your whatever in the world what does the world look like and what kind of world are we trying to create then your values kind of keep you in line our values are like grow authenticity things like that um values tests are free and available online super quick I think values are just the things that help you make decisions we actually had a whole podcast episode about this highly recommend you watch and then the I which is your ideal customer Avatar there are like more in-depth exercises we didn't really do this we just kind of thought like who are we talking to we're talking to young people who are entrepreneurs who are looking for a community who are going through these hard emotions these negative emotions like feeling doubted not sure where they should go lack of Direction who are really ambitious and need a push like we are just describing ourselves really or people that we want to speak to people we want to hang out with honestly and then after this we were able to really generate a lot of names for the podcast like the language things that we felt like our audience would resonate with or understand this could be in YouTube titles this could be in short titles or captions and then here we also develop slogans taglines the intro the description which are all things you're going to need before you upload by the way if you you use Spotify for podcasters as your podcast host you will need all of these details so it's just you might as well do it anyway and then the last thing we did was outline three to five episodes I got this tip I think from Latasha James or Katie steckley but I thought this was like genius if you are writing out three different episode titles and like a basic outline this will really help you clarify should I do this should I not do this because if this these things are flowing and you're having a good time and you're having fun with it this could be an indicator that yeah you really do have something to talk about and even if you're having a hard time it doesn't mean you should stop or not do it but it just kind of helps you realize like oh maybe that's not exactly what I want to talk about if I'm having such a hard time creating just three episodes you want to have consistent content on this podcast so that's just the Baseline then that means that you can probably do another three another five things like that we like to keep it simple and do just three talking points per episode um I kind of veered off from this and I instantly regretted it I feel like for our podcast specifically we wanted it to be a flow of conversation instead of just this like school textbook like here's how to do X Y and Z it's more of a conversation so depending on what your podcast is for you can alter this but we just have a simple intro we have our three talking points and we have homework every episode to give our audience and I'm going to add in a bonus tip here this kind of goes with your outline and your general plan but don't pick a topic pick an audience I think I got that also from Latasha James or Katie sley but this is super important because when you pick a person I feel like it's easier to create all of the other things instead of just trying to be the industry expert on a whole industry or whole topic I feel like that's really hard to do and it also like lacks a lot of like authenticity and like style okay so that covers mainly the content of the podcast now we're going to get into the production side which is where everyone gets stressed I know trust me I was getting stressed too we can do this this is the production for dummies and the girlies specifically she's a girl in stem she's a woman in stem okay so there's three different tips I have under this point the first point is design I'm going to start here I'll get you equipment I know what you're thinking there's a reason equipment is last but when you're starting this process if you are feeling unsure or you're just not like 100% in start doing all the necessary tasks to put together this podcast before you invest in equipment I think this just makes sense especially even like with YouTube or other pieces of content do not invest in the high-tech cameras and the mics and the laptops and everything you don't know if this is something you like doing or you don't know if this is something that you would do for a long period of time and then also when you're doing things like design and thinking about the audience and really mind mapping what the podcast is about you start to like feel like a podcaster before it already happen so for Designing I highly suggest canva probably the best design platform for any level really just focus on like I'm making a podcast cover image for my podcast that's it you're not trying to be a canva wizard you don't really need to they have some templates even if you type in podcast on Cana they have some templates for um different designs I literally used a template base and changed it up a little bit and just added our pictures into the template and changed the color and that really helped me create the seed for our podcast image so you want to make sure you create the podcast cover or image that's going to be on Spotify Apple Google we did a YouTube Banner because we also were posting this on YouTube and then the last thing we had was like our intro outro for our YouTube videos and podcast music or theme song having a theme song is just a little nice Splash to make it feel more personal we found ours on epidemic sound which is something that I subscribe to every month but I use it for YouTube so it was just perfect to use it for my podcast as well I found a copyright free song there so you don't get copyright strikes on anything when you're posting your podcast on these different platforms and then people recognize it like it becomes like your thing as we probably guessed my second tip here is to test test test test you can get your iPhone you you can get your laptop whatever you already have practice doing an episode I think this was the best tip that we followed and that I heard when I was looking around and researching actually talk to yourself like talk to the camera talk to your phone talk to your laptop and then watch yourself back see how you like it see what you don't or do like and then that can help you choose where you want to do it in your home we do ours in just a random corner it actually looks so much smaller in person than in the video but that just would came with a lot of testing we moved some furniture around and then for what everyone's been waiting for the equipment I don't know how everyone else does their equipment this is just how we found that works for us and based on some of the reactions we've gotten when we posted this before this seems pretty easy and basic for most people to to understand so hopefully it is for you let me know if you have any questions I'm not a tech Guru I kind of learned this they watching my fiance and um I will answer any more questions if you have them we spent around $500 for all of our equipment it's all linked on my storefront by the way if you have questions on Where any of these are I will link them in the description we try to keep ours under a budget because we are kind of struggling starting entrepreneurs we're trying to keep things cheap and tested out okay so there's two important things to talk about here when you're creating a podcast you're mixing in the audio and the video and putting it together so this is where you need other equipment to do this our Holy Grail software here is OBS OBS connects both of these together and it syncs it so that by the time we're finished with our podcast we have one audio file with the Visual and the audio together and I don't have to sync a separate visual file and a separate audio file while I'm editing in my editor so for the audio we use these Road pod mics we have these Road mics hooked up to an XLR cable these XLR cables plug into an audio interface which does the translation from the mic to the computer basically your pod mic is going to be plugged into XLR which is a cable that plugs into the audio interface and that audio interface is plugged into your laptop so the sound from the microphone goes all the way to your laptop if that makes sense so then that's where OBS our bestie comes in and takes that transmission from the mic through the audio interface into the laptop and stores it and it's like holding on to your audio so then you have your audio set up after that I'm going to need to hook up my visual if you wanted to do a visual podcast this is where you're going to need a camera or an iPhone or something of the sort we started off with an iPhone so I'll start there what we did while the audio was all hooked up we got a phone we put it on a tripod on any tripod we hooked up that iPhone with a thunderbolt to USBC because our computer took a USBC cable Thunderbolt to USBC into the computer so then we had our audio and our visual hooked up to the computer then since our audio is already set in OBS all we needed to do was add in the video which was through the iPhone and your iPhone will like as long as it's on the same Wi-Fi as OBS It'll recognize that it's being plugged into OBS and like it'll kind of go black so you can't really do anything on it but you'll be able able to see yourself on the computer through OBS so your computer or your laptop will kind of act as your monitor so you can see how everything looks on the iPhone cuz we use the back camera obviously think that's the best quality so that's if you have an iPhone if you have a camera you will have to use just a little bit more chords so most cameras have a mini HDMI like that's the only connection that's allowed through the camera you'll need a mini HDMI that will go from the camera into a regular HDMI cable and so you'll plug the mini HDMI into a regular HDMI and the HDMI will need to go through a capture card our capture card is a USB so the ending of the capture card as a USB so we had to use a USB to USBC to plug into the laptop to connect that capture card into the laptop so there's three different chords and they all connect to each other so it starts off with the mini HDMI that goes to the regular HDMI the regular HDMI will go into the capture card the capture card has a the ending the little lingering thing on the capture card is a USB so we need a US USB port that will go into USBC that is allowed to connect to our computer because we have a Mac it can be complicated I'm sure there's other ways to do this this is just what we did and what we use currently and we're always looking for ways to improve or make this process a little bit easier and then once you're in OBS and all of these things are hooked up to your laptop and the audio interface and everything's plugged in you're going to be able to find sources or add sources into your OBS scene they basically call it a scene that's like think of it as like your recording room so you can add in the audio here and you can add in the video here and then once you press start recording you'll be able to see how it's recording in OBS it'll show a screen with how everything is being put together and then boom once you're done it'll spit out this one file that you can just edit with some additional things we had were tripods boom stands because in our podcast we sit in two chairs and we're looking at each other so this just helps us not have to hold the mic and then I also use headphones to hear myself which you can plug in through a headphone jack into your audio interface so once all of that is done you going to enter your distribution ERA this is how you get your podcast out to the people who need to hear the most I personally use wonders share for Mora for all of my editing on YouTube for my podcast for everything use whatever is native to you iMovie anything Works um you're really just going to be cutting you're just going to be cutting gaps sounds unwanted information trimming it down making it shorter so you can edit in those platforms I'll link the one that I use wonders share from loraa it's pretty cheap I bought it one time for 50 bucks and I've used it for like 5 years so this is is where I added my canva outro intro and it's pretty seamless so once you have your video and everything put together and it's designed all nice and blah blah blah you need a place that's going to transmit this audio or video recording into the world so people can access it on Apple podcast Spotify podcast Google podcast so the Hoster is basically the liaison between you and all of these platforms that it gets distributed out to so we did Spotify for podcasters which used to be Anor so if you're familiar with Anor that was a very popular podcast Hoster um and they got bought out by Spotify I think Spotify for podcasters anyone can register you can sign up at this website and you can create your own podcast by now you're in luck you've already had your episode made you already have your cover made because that's exactly what they're going to ask when you register like they you won't even be able to register without having your first episode done and I think they do this for a reason because they want people to be like serious about this so when you go on to the website when you register you'll be able to put in all your information you'll have to put in your first episode name you have to put in your podcast name your podcast cover the episodes description things like that and then you'll be able to upload the episode and then it will create your account officially I believe after that and I'm only speaking for the Spotify for podcasters platform I'm not sure about how the other ones work but for this one which I highly recommend cuz I feel like they make it really easy and Spotify is just the place for podcasts honestly you will have to distribute it to to the other platforms manually you will have to kind of almost register on the other platforms but I think it's a little bit easier if you're starting off with one we were able to go to like the distribution page they they call it something else I can't remember and then we were able to like register for Apple register for Google which I think has now merged with YouTube okay so now that your podcast is distributed out to the different platforms and it's streaming you are ready to distribute this in other ways through your own means so any app you name it YouTube Tik Tok Instagram but Twitter maybe I don't know you can use basically any app to start Distributing this podcast so a huge huge tip that I have here is to utilize short form content what we did is we decided to have our long episodes on Spotify and all of the major podcast platforms and also have the long episodes on YouTube then we would also make Clips so our Clips were shorter than our episodes so they're about like 10 to like 17 minutes if it gets really long long and then we would also put that on YouTube cuz that's still technically like a longer form video so that if people came across our videos and they're not really down for like a 2hour chat and they wanted to talk they wanted to learn more about the topic they could watch our clips and our Clips have done really well on YouTube but that's probably what got us our first like 100 subscribers and then we also like to take that a step further and do shorts so we basically make little shorts out of the clips any oneliner or something that hits really deep we just take like a 30C to 60c short of that clip or of the episode and post that on YouTube shorts post it on our Instagrams and post it on Tik Tok there are plenty of podcasts that make separate accounts for their podcast so they'll make their own Instagram they'll make their own Tik Tok they'll make their own YouTube channel so you can use all of these platforms to make a dedicated page just for your podcast we only have a dedicated page on our YouTube channel the shorts and the reals we just post that on our own Instagram and then another tip here is just to start networking if you're looking into guests or having speakers or just people to add in on the conversation having a podcast is a great way to network like everybody wants to be on a podcast it's a great way to reach out to people that you otherwise wouldn't have a reason to talk to I feel like it's a great way to distribute the podcast even more and also start talking to people that you find really cool and you guys have a unified message or you really align on values and those are all of my tips if you have any questions about something maybe I didn't touch on or something you been thinking about drop them below I really want to just like knowledge share here if there's anything I missed drop it down below I'm still learning I'm still new to this podcast game and I'm really excited for your podcast and honestly link it if you just started a podcast or you're about to get started drop your podcast down below let's listen to each others let's support each other I'm really excited to hear what you guys are talking about or what you end up making your podcast about everything I mentioned will be down in the description I hope you have a wonderful day and thank you so much for watching [Music]
