[Music] thank you [Music] hey everyone and welcome to today's gale force Twins episode where we are going to be teaching y'all how to plant our fish with wind on leader this is a great technique for planar fishing it's simple and easy and straightforward and the best part is it's an awesome way to catch kingfish Wahoo and Barracuda but you can also catch some Mahi antunas as well my name is Emily a man is behind the camera and Welcome to our Channel gale force twins thank you [Music] starting with the gear we have the rod and reel The Reel is a Penn International 50 wide and the rod is a gale force planer Rod details will be in the description box for the rod and reel the rod specifically will be available to purchase in the near future The Reel itself is spooled with 80 pound braid following that we have the Bridle and after the Bridle we have a hundred foot of 60 pound mono and then 15 foot of 60 pound fluoro on the braid side we have a Bimini using a uni knot to tie to the first end of the Bridle and then the second end of the Bridle we have another Uni knot tying to the 60 pound mono following that we use a double you need to go from 60 pound mono to 60 pound floral next we have the lure which is the fun part you get to pick the colors we personally love colors like pink and white and blue and white if we're targeting Wahoo specifically we like to go a little darker maybe black and purple but you really can't go wrong especially with the whites and the blues and pinks we like to match our sea witch to our squid and our mylar so first you'll see we have a sea witch followed by a squid which is pink followed by a weighted mylar now that mylar is weighted it's not always easy to find the weighted ones if you can't find them weighted I would not stress it but we do like the weighted ones lastly we have a long shank J hook with a swivel and mono wire which holds the Bonita strip in place we'll get to the bait next we have our Bonita strip which you can either make yourself or purchase now a Bonita strip is a strip of skin from a Bonita with a small amount of the meat kept on not a lot a very small amount the first thing we're going to do is have the flat side up with the hook so I will take the hook and actually poke a hole in the flat side and use that hole for the monal wire you can see that I have the mono wire going through the hole that I just made I will take the mono wire and push it back through the eye of the hook to secure it now before I put the second half of the banana strip on the hook I will look at it visually and decide where do I need that that hole to come through from the hook so I'll put my finger there see that's where it needs to go and push that in there just like this so you have a very nice straight streamline rigged Bonita strip on a long shank J hook with mono wire holding in place I know that's a lot of information so we will have details in the description box written out so you can go down there and check it out to know where to get all the proper gear and how to rig it now let's get out there and teach you the technique for that wine on planar fishing [Music] thank you [Music] now for our lawn cleaner I like to use a number four and for our short planer I like to use a number eight you guys can vary and choose what you like maybe for the long you use a four or five maybe for the short you like to use a six or an eight when it comes to planar fishing you will have the weight facing you and we have two double-sided snap swallows on either side of the planer now what we did was we took one set of snap swivel that attached to the Bridle and actually cut it for quicker release that is optional but it's a much quicker way for when you're fighting the fish to get that planer off and keep winding long planar going out first we have the bait 60 pound fluoro Double Uni 60 pound mono 100 foot of sleep on mono giving you guys a quick recap there letting it out when we get to the Bridle that is when we are going to stop put the rod on the rod holder and attach our planer always attach your planer to the side of the Bridle the side closer to the Bridle so you can see how we have that snap swivel cut that makes that easy attachment and release if you had a regular stepsible and you had to close it that's absolutely okay and an option this is just quicker attach it on the other side there we have our planer attached to the Bridle now when it is under the water and in deep in the water column what happens is it actually Dives down getting your bait deeper in the water column and that's where those Wahoos and Kingfish live and then when you have a bite Emily go ahead and show what a bite when you have a bite the planter will actually pop and release and release and it makes easier for you to reel in your catch for the long I like to count 35 40 seconds and that's a true 40 seconds one two from this later on the planer so the minute that planner hits the water that's when you start counting don't sit there and go one two three four so guys a real 40 seconds because that short I have to do 25 to 30 seconds so it's okay to have your own variation maybe 40 is a little too far out for you maybe your long is 30 and your shortest 20. but make sure you do have that short closer and that long further a decent amount of price at least 10 seconds so that way when you do make your turns you don't cross each other once I'm happy with where that planer is I will put it in the rod holder lock up the Reel take a look at our Rod you can see that it has that bend in it now the long with the lighter planer will not be so dramatically bent as the short with the heavier planer but this planer is set now sometimes the planers don't set when you let them out and we will show you that technique for how to set your planer if it doesn't set out its own but unlike maybe Mahi fishing or bottom fishing when a fish takes a bait what happens the line peels the rod bent over but with planar fishing it's actually the opposite when a fish attacks that bait it is actually going to release pressure on the planer and this planer will bounce up now it's not very obvious so a bite could look like something really simple like this that could be a bite just like that so you have to keep your eyes on the rod and the rod tip of what it looks like now if there's a bite what will happen is it'll look like that and then it'll bounce a little bit you'll see some bounces let's be doing this and that's when you know you have a fish on for our short planer we have a size eight planer a heavier planer and once again that weight on the planer is going to face you have the weight facing you we're going to count this is a short let's count 25 seconds pass the planer out one two three four five so on and so forth until we get to 25 seconds lock it up place it in the rod holder perfect this planer's not set perfect we have a great example of a planer that did not set on its own so we're going to pull on that line and drop it there we go next let's talk about running the boat where do you run the boat how fast you run the boat now when I like to set my planers up I like to go about five knots any faster and you start to feel that pressure when you're setting up and it can actually be a challenge so setting planers up five knots either put the boat in autopilot and be aware of what is in front of the boat or have a buddy drive to go straight at five knots now if you are targeting Wahoo you want to go honestly 8 10 11 knots if you can if your gear lets you if not as fast as you possibly can a rule of thumb is the slower you go the more like you are to catch Cuda so if you're starting to catch barracudas say push up a little bit unless of course you're in a physical action and you're perfectly happy catching kudas sometimes when it's really slow and we just want to bend rods we will purposely go a little slower and catch kudas so I would say five six seven knots you really want to catch those Wahoo's push it up to eight to ten knots next we have location now this technique works everywhere we are on the Southeast side of Florida on the East Coast this is a very Niche style of fishing but like I said it can be applied to pretty much any style of offshore fishing what we like to do is planar fish where that wreath ends and the drop-off starts now that's around 100 foot of water if you definitely want to catch some Kingfish and Kudos I would say that Hunter footage is a great place to start if you know you want to go for this Wahoo I would say 200 to even 400 foot of water to where you'll find those Wahoos now let's say you want to turn around make a complete 180 but what do you do when you have planar Runs Out you do need to be careful of getting them crossed the best thing to do is to turn towards the side of your long line so for example my long is on my starboard side I'm making right turns it's easier you're less likely to have your line foot crossed if you turn towards that long side doesn't mean you cannot not do it to your short side but then you make that turn a lot wider I'm going to push it up a little bit today [Music] six and a half knots we'll start with six and a half knots see how it goes and adjust from there now we have a bonus Rod to put out let's show you guys that bonus Rod bonus Rod that is the heel course do it all rod with a pin Slammer we have a 6500 pair with it and what we like to do is put on a Surface lure for two knives maybe come across a Mahi or even some things that can eat from the surface it's great to have an extra lure out there in your spread between the cleaners now this lure is going to go out even further than we have those players I will count past 35 seconds maybe 40 seconds we're really going to push this lure out there and if we wanted to put a whole thread out this is the start of the whole spread but we're really going to focus on those planner today we have fish on now Amanda are we out of here completely we are completely out of gear all right why don't you bump us I'm Gonna Bump us a little quicker boats go inside see all right I'm gonna stay at the wheel okay Emily okay just talk to us and tell us what's going on all right guys we had a bite the rod tip bounced and it kept bouncing very typical sign of a bite you may see me in the gunnel still that might seem kind of strange however with planer fishing with this heavy heavy tackling gear it is best to leave the rods in the rod holders we got some swells out here so we have to bear with us so I'm just reeling this up steady nice and steady now if the fish did run I would let it run all right we're at the planer I'm gonna reel up to the planer come here pull the planer off and when I have the side of my hand I'm not going to drop it I'm going to as carefully as possibly carefully as possible Let It Go and reel this fish up let's see what it is once we get closer might not be a bad time to pick the rod off of the rod holder but for now I'm looking good right now all right I'm gonna pick it up follow your fish this is when you might want to have a gap or a net if they're small enough we can swing them I think we got a king Amanda we got a king we got a king nice job wanna swing on these little things you ready we're ready we're gonna go ahead and swing this guy bring him here bring them close bring them nice and close one two three in the boat that's a big one I know we probably should have gotta go we should have gapped that one but dang Amanda you swung that in the boat one hand well we knew he was hooked well so we could take our chances but nice job yeah Kingfish there you go Amanda are you all ready to see this really nice sized Kingfish that we probably should have gaffed Amanda got him in the boat by swinging it that was a wrist but hey he's in the boat you can't complain but check out this nice size Kingfish you guys this is the ideal species that you're targeting so this is textbook textbook planer fishing we just caught a nice King these fish are delicious they make really really good smoked fish dip that's the go-to for Kingfish smoked fish dip we actually have a video on catch clean Cook's steaks Kingfish if you want steaks Kingfish we'll have to link that for you guys but check out this awesome size fish great so you can see the teeth on this fish so you can see because of the teeth that's why we like to use definitely the long shank Hooks and the swivel definitely helps with that as well but no we are not fishing with wire we we caught this guy in basically 120 feet of water so we started off in around like two three hundred feet and we weren't getting any bites that would be the range for Wahoo and Tunas but we weren't getting the bites so Emily I came in we came in to the slightly shallower water depth in order to Target the Kings and the cudas 115 foot of water five knots we were targeting Kings to the T now let's get this guy on some icing in the box fish going in the Box definitely need to open up that ice bag but that's a nice looking King we have a bite and that is what a fish on looks like you see those holes that Taps that is a fish another note something we forgot to mention on the last fish is as soon as we have a bite Emily starts to reel but she backs off the drag because that drag is really now only a couple clicks so we have that drag very high because these planers have a lot of pressure so in order to pull planers to planer fish you have to have that drag kind of high or else your line will just start peeling out we call it bleeding the line's bleeding so it's peeling out and you're like why is it peeling out because that planer has so much pressure you really have to push that drag up but once you get a fish on you don't need all that pressure you don't want to lose the fish because it's too tight to drag so once you get that hook up bring it back now this is where you got to be careful you can't just come back and drop it in preschool you will get a bird's nest and you will likely lose your fish so you're going to want to two three clicks back nothing crazy just a little bit just to bring that tension off a little bit we also back off the throttle we are now going five knots prior to going five knots we were going around eight eight knots we're actually kind of fast yes okay so we're at the planer and we do have some we have some weeds on the planer but we do have some tips on removing the planer as well so what Emily's gonna do first she's just removing the weeds and then as she lets go the planer watch her left hand her left hand is on the line right and she just gently lets go and her left hand is going to guide the line back up she doesn't let go of the line and let it pop that's another great way to lose a fish just drop the line any slack in the line that fish shakes its head it's gonna spit the hook there's our fish Amanda I think we're gonna need the Gap that looks like a pretty decent design like I need the Gaff we just saw him kick out the surface now that the planer is off because we have wind on wine through planar fishing I'm going to take the rod out of the rod holder this part is optional these are pretty heavy tackle heavy gear if you need to give them rod holder you can but at this point I find it's much easier to control the fish when I pick that Rod up and I fight it standing we can see our fish back there most likely a king definitely he is kicking on the surface and we are definitely going to Gap this fish this time not taking any chances well pulling it out of the rock we don't need a gap Amanda we don't need a gaff not necessarily we got ourselves a wahoo but this is terrible oh my goodness oh my goodness Amanda you're about to swing it all right you want me to swing it oh how sad I'm in tears hey there's still some good fish on that so wait a minute hot meat reel up a little more Emily reel up a little more oh my goodness what a sad day what a very sad day perfect example we were traveling at eight knots eight knots is a lot faster and that is more Wahoo speed you can see we literally just did it but unfortunately the shark came and I actually did see that shark fin come up because usually when you catch a wahoo they stay deep under the surface and they don't surface until literally you're at the side about with a gap which is why I said Kingfish at first because I saw it pop up like a couple I don't know 20 yards behind the boat and when I saw that happen I go oh it's a king but what really happens it got sharked and came up and that is basically our shark Wahoo so eight knots was a great Wahoo speed and then once we were hooked up Emily backed off the drag I backed off the throttles I basically just have both of them in gear we're not and it's traveling at around six knots right now plus we have the current with us as well so why we're a little bit faster and we decided a Who be very careful if you ever do catch a wahoo Kingfish two of it espec Wahoo because their teeth are sharp those teeth even though they're small and you can barely see them they're razor razor sharp so don't stick your fingers inside those teeth check that out let's see that Amanda that's where that fish got sharked but hey there's still enough meat on there we're gonna have some water it's still going on the ice it's gonna be we're definitely playing Wahoo today we have a fish on the bonus Rod the bonus gale force gear do it all Rod it's our 15 to 30 pound moderate action rod that's great for everything Mahi fishing trolling and basically we're trolling a tuna feather out there we don't know what this is it's pretty exciting because we have caught a kingfish half a wahoo and now our bonus Rod went off so when you're player fishing if you want you can also part A whole spread and put your riggers out but for today there's just two of us out here we just wanted to put out one bonus round and two planers it's incredible success we're getting a little Tangled okay we good work around the planer like we said there's just two of us out here so we gotta make do what we have but like Amanda was saying that Rod we call it the doodle rod for a reason it's our all-purpose spinning rod we've also caught Cobia we've used it for knocker rigs Cobia good for vertical jigging on the Rex or trolling for tuna or pitching a mile this fish is staying deep is that right what do we think this is we didn't even finish putting our other we're honestly thinking do I need to get the Gaff out that's the question I can see it do we need to get the Gap out hold on didn't look like one since he's a little on the smaller side look for that shine in the water there's that shine in the water there's our Bonita so you able to swing them or yeah swing them in there we go Bonita in the boat fun fact this Bonita is what the Wahoo ate this is the species of the Wahoo eight check it out let's take a look at this Bonita a species a bait species of tuna how you know these are Bonitas and not black fins which is the other piece of tuna is see those like swirly lines that they have that is The Telltale sign of a Bonita so this makes some great bait they make good strips they make great strips if you want to catch Wahoo and Kingfish they make great chunk bait if you want to fish the reefer yellow tails you can also chunk them if you're on a school of Mahi whatever it is they are just excellent excellent Bait fish and we're gonna go ahead and put them on the ice we hope you all found this episode helpful on how to wind on planer fish even more specifically on how to catch Wahoo and Kingfish but like we said you can catch tuna and Mahi and other species doing this technique if you have any questions post them in the comments but all the details of the rig will be in the description box in the meantime we hope you get out there have fun and stay safe 115 foot of water that is ideal Kingfish tar zones territory right cat wood territory territory territory all right on the braid side we used a uni following the uh okay now our long planer we have the size eight to the short sorry let me redo that oh good redo it okay I wasn't ready okay okay starting on the long side we have Nina starting with the 60 pound bottle and we have the planer has let me do it again okay look from the other side of the Bridle like that
