I am big fan of the fact that he can paint minis from all kinds of games now. I feel like I will learn of new games to try just by watching him paint dope minis.

hello there and this video we're going to be showing you how to paint a character who is an absolute fan favorites for Star Wars fans and that is obi-wan Kenobi we're going to be using the miniature that comes inside the core Star Wars Legion box set for the Clone Wars and this miniature is beautiful has a lot of detail on it too and we're going to be walking you through the entire process of painting including all the armor the robes the hair everything to get a really good likeness to the character now I'm really excited for this video so without further ado let's get to the desk [Music] to paint obi-wan Kenobi we've chosen to go for an undercoat of xandrie dust from Citadel because this is a really nice starting point for the robes that form the core of his body and also it's a great starting point for the other colors on the miniature as well such as the armor and is the armor that were going to be starting with followed up by the under suit and this armor is of course pure white much like the clones that he leads so to do this what we're gonna do is start out by base coating all the armor with an off-white the Chloe we've chosen for this is all thrown gray from citadel which is a perfect starting point for this and the brush I'm gonna use is a monster brush and the army painter which is nice and robust it's all really good for this early color sort of thing so you'll notice as well in this video we're using a wet palette and you don't have to use a wet palette if you don't want to you can of course just use a tile we've just chosen to use a palette like this because this being a character and a variable of character as well just want to take a little bit further and you'll see that later on it's actually really useful mixing colors now I could said you could use a tile if you want to but this isn't as clumsy or as random as a tile and it is very elegant pal of this one from the only painter from a more civilized age so once you've got my paint on the palette what we need to do is as always dilute it with a little bit of water just leaving a good blob of the paint there like that because this will help it stay wet for longer and what we need to do is just get our next in load up your brush and then it's just a matter of looking for the armor on ob1 and starting to pick it out so I'm going to start on the legs you can see it's on the legs and on the arms as well and this first coat will be quite transparent but don't worry about it the supply second thin coat once the first one is completely dry now the only details will account for at this stage is the robes don't worry about anything else though because we will be based coating all the other details later on once you've built up that also and gray to a smooth finish you then ready to move on to the next step which is to apply a contrast paint over the top of it which going to be a path carrier white and what this will do is give a nice sort of very slight bluish shading to the white and to apply it we need it is a small brush I'm going for a medium layer from Citadel and I'm not actually gonna use the palette with this and so I'm just gonna paint it straight out of a pulse like that just using the side of the pot just again a small amount on the brush and then it's just a matter of painting this onto the armor now is it going to serve two big purposes first of all it is going to shade it but also it's going to help define the edges of it which is going to be really useful when we get to areas such as around the elbow here when it comes time to painting the under suit now if you catch some of the robes don't worry about it too much just paint up to the edge like that and work your way around but do your best to avoid using a lot on these parts because it does speed up the process later on once the Apothecary white is completely dry we're going to leave the armor for the time being and start painting the under suit on the miniature and for this we're gonna start out with a base coat of necromancer cloak from the army painter followed by washing over that using some dark tone or so from the army painter now once that's completely dry rate to highlight it for which one Eve mechanicus turn the gray from Citadel followed by a very small amount of administration gray also from Citadel the first of all we need that necromancer cloak so I'm just going to get some of this onto the palette and we just need a good little dollop like that and then you just need to pick an appropriate sized brush I'm actually gonna be using two at this stage first of all and medium layer from Citadel I've also got small hair from Citadel as well and you'll see why in just a moment what we need to do is just get the pink nicely already there we go and then get any excess off the brush and then we're ready to start picking out this under layer on the miniature and what we're looking for is the black soot that goes underneath the armor plating so if I look at the leg for example you can see some of it around here and this thing goes underneath the ropes just here and it does every now and then reappear underneath the robes such as just here on the chest and there's also some underneath the arms here and this of course goes through all the joints in the armor including of the arms on the hands all these kind of areas and there's even a little bit on the lightsaber hilt which is this part just there as well so be sure to get back to sohere's knees take your time working way around the miniature doing this but also at this point we've got a great opportunity to add a little bit more definition between different army put their arm plates which is well what the small brush is for because as you get around areas like this it's a good idea to put some of this darker color underneath that plate to where the two plates are separate you see so I'm going to switch over to the smaller brush nail and this what we do is just get a small amount on here and you can just start running it here now normally only Imperial Stormtroopers would be so precise but in this case having the small brush just allows us to run to that recess there like that you can see just help separate those two details with all that black detail picked out you're then ready to apply a coat of dark tone from the army painter over the top of it and again switched between the two brushes as you need to both the medium layer and the small layer I'm starting out with a small layer and you can just very carefully just working it onto these blank details not worrying too much about catching small amounts the robes but I'm being very careful to keep it off the armor once you've applied it give it a round about half an hour to dry once the wash is dry were then ready to apply a highlight of mechanicus standard gray to the black and to be honest it's not really that much to do here instead just look out for any creases for example just along here and just paint a line across the very top of them the mean area to highlight is actually the fingers and for this all we need to do is to paint a line just running along each one going all the way around like this and finally we just need a very small amount of administration gray and this is first forged to pick out the joints in the fingers so just very small amounts of this color on these areas where the fingers just Bend so around there like that and also any of the sharper details for example just to run the top of his collar now once done this we're going to be moving on later to paint in the robes so just make sure you need them with Xandra dust if you got any lodgers for example I have just long they're just neat that up before we move on to the next step and with that the black is complete and I've also neaten up those robes and in fact it's the robes that we're going to be painting now and they are debased codes and reduced for us so we're now ready to jump straight into shading them and for this we want a nice dark brown so I'm going for strong tone from the army painter now when using washers and I'm using a wet palette I actually prefer to return to my normal palette when I'm using these because it just helps them keep to get a little bit better on the palette there and gives me a better idea what they're going to behave like even if the tile is so uncivilized anyway which need to load up with a good sized brush this I mean my medium layer from Citadel and all you need to do is apply this directly over all the ropes all these areas here so it settles nicely in the recessed details bringing it right up to the armor and also the black on the suit once he finished applying this give the miniature around about half an hour to dry once the wash is dry we're then ready to start to lighten up those robes once more so for this we're going to return to Sandra just first of all and then this time I'm going to be layering it on to the miniature so go from medium sized brush and medium lay from Citadel it's perfect for this sort of thing and what we want to do is just get our paint Roedean nicely diluted and this time just make sure that you get rid of all the excess paint off your brush so you can bring the bristles to a nice tip so there we go twisting like that and then what we're ready to do is start to apply over most of the robes leaving just the shape still showing in the very deepest area so on this part on the front for example what I'm going to do is apply a thin coat like this now notice I'm moving my brush in the direction of the raised creases as well so it's nice and easy motion to control the brush just gently running down those areas leaving that dark a bit owning the very deepest creases of the fabric so just take your time on this thing as neat as you can to gently apply the paint like this once you finish reapplying that as andrew dust were then ready to move on to really establishing the midtone of Obi Wan's robes and for this what we're going to be doing is a mix of Xandra dust along with ash Abdi Bowman because Sandra just on its own is a little bit too much on the dark side so what we need to do is to get this ready and I'm going to be using a medium layer brush to apply it just like I did before starting at was angry dust and here we can see the real advantage of having a wet palette here because normally we avoid doing mixes because the paint will dry out and it's difficult to get that color once again go with a wet palette rain will stay wet for a long time which means we can mix it and then really take her time and applying it so it's perfectly this kind of thing anyway I want roughly half and half of those two there we go and then I can start mixing them together next to it and you can see I'm doing it next to the two dots of paint there because this way I can draw in one or the other as I need to to get to the color that I want and while I'm aiming for is kind of like that's or color just there so it's the ideal color for everyone's robes just here so what we need to do now is then just in that down there we go get really except int off the brush up and then we're ready to start applying it to the robes so what we want to do here is to paint it over most of them again avoiding the recesses but a bit more delicately than last time because we want to leave a bit as Andrew just showing as well so you can see on this pot I'm going to paint there leave a bit as Andrea showing then Xandra just with a shade on it and xandrie on the other side before returning to our mix there like that so you can see is not quite highlights is a bit too broad to be highlights but you can see how it just really adds lots of volume and depth to the texture of the fabric once the robes have reached this stage then ready to move on to the process of highlighting them and we're doing a few highlights on this because it is not the central part of the miniature first of all what we're going to use is sort of shap t-bone on its own this time and this time the brush is going to be a small layer brush from Citadel and we actually have a little bit on the wet palette already so we can use some more of that there we go as always and now what we're looking to do with this is to start to pick out the very tops the creases on the fabric so you don't be very much of this make sure your brush is going to a fine tip and what we're aiming to do now is to look for those tops the creases such as just here and we just want to paint a small amount of this following the very top so just there just there and then gently going down and notice that I'm holding the miniature so that the motion is a very comfortable one for my hands very very comfortable to do that kind of thing which means I can easily follow that crease going down there and you have to go all the way just these are more prominent parts again picking up just there and a little bit there and we want to do the outline as well so for this just look for where it's got a nice defined edge just gently skim your brush along it like that to get that sharp highlight and when you're going along the hem when it starts to go into those creases just pause the highlight as it dips in and then carry on on the other side now we other hearts is applied and all the texture of the fabric is now coming out nicely and in fact could leave it here if he wants to but this being a character we're going to take it a little bit further now and apply two more highlights to it first of all we need some Screaming skull and then we're going to add a little bit of palette which flesh and both of these are sardar paints first of all though we need screaming skull and i'm going to stick to my smaller brush for applying this and with this we're going to be largely tracing the same sort of areas all we did before and it won't be a little bit more precise now so you don't be very much of this really just make sure it's nicely thinned down there we go and just get a small amount of that onto the brush there we are what we're going to do is to paint this onto the parts of the fabric that are really standing out the most so it's from the same general harness what we did previously but bit more selective so for example if we take a look at this part just here this would stand out a bit more so I just want to apply a fine highlight on that bit just a it's a very small amount there like that then we've got this one standing up just down here so I just want to apply a small amount there a little bit around the corner of this hem just here so always small amounts because he just helps them stand out a little bit more so just take your time looking for areas like this and just gently picking them out and finally we're ready for a very very fine highlight of pallid which flash instead of just very small bits almost dots really on the very sharpest parts of the robes because these parts are so small go for your smallest brush I'm using a detail brush from the army painter for this and there we are Obi Wan's robes are now complete and we can move on to finishing off all of his armor now to do this we're going to return to ortho and gray first of all of the plants a layer this time and a great brush for this here's a medium layer brush from Citadel but have a smaller one on hand should you need it for some of the finer details but what we want to do is get a nice thin version of this so just as always make first diluted there we go and then just make sure you have smooth amount in your brush just use the power to get rid the excess paint there we go and what we're looking to do now is to paint this onto the flat of the armor panels so rather than running it all over this time instead just paint it smoothly on these smooth surfaces like this and then leave it darker in the recessed area so on the need for example I paint on the flat of this whole panel then skip that recess and start putting a little bit further down sorry in the definition that we got earlier on from both the Apothecary white and also that black we painted it into those corners that stage finished were then ready to move on to highlighting the white armor for this we're going to be using matte white from the army painter so a pure white for this and what what I'm going to do with this is apply it as an edge highlight so we just need a little bit of this onto the palate and then a finer brush I'm gonna go for my smaller brush from citadel here we go go for an even smaller if you wanted to for example a detail one thing the only painter choice really is yours though what I want to do is get that paint so it's nice and smooth and then the real trick here with the edge highlighting is to get the paint correctly onto your brush so make sure it's diluted like this but then don't go straight from that because you'll overload it and you'll start to get some lumpy highlights so get the excess off your brush load up refresh like that making sure that you got the paint loaded in there and it's nice and smooth and you can always test on the palette see how it's flowing from the brush you can see I'm able to get some nice neat straight lines very easily now so I've got the right consistency so we're now ready to start applying it to the armor what we're looking to do is to skim the sharper edges of it so you can actually use the side of your brush here and I'm going to start on the back of this plate that goes Chris's body I'm going to do is just use the very side of the brush just to very gently go across the edges like this so I get a neat line see I'm just very gently just using the force of the bristles to just very lightly skim like that this way I get a nice highlight appearing on there and it's just a matter of just turn the model around all the time so it feels comfortable so they can easily use this motion to get to all those edges once you've finished applying that highlight there's just one more stage to do to finish off the armor and that is to to add a glaze of it of a pure white again I'm gonna use matte white from the army painter once more and what it's going to do is make it a little bit whiter and also give it kind of shell like appearance like you see in the shows now to do this I'm gonna be using the same little dollop of painter using the previous step and get some of that onto here and I'm using my small layer brush from set out once more and what I'm going to do this time is heavily dilute that paints are very runny see good amount of water mixed in there and what I'm looking for is the transparency so I'm checking that on the palette now and you can see when I paint it thinly it gives that very smooth see-through appearance that's exactly what I want now trick is not to apply too much at once so doesn't go lumpy on the miniature so get the excess off your brush in some tissue and then load up fresh and the idea here is to apply a thin coat of this once to each armor panel so if I start on the back once more what I'm gonna do is just gently skim the way across each one these panels like this and you see just shifts the color just a little bit closer towards why just take your time doing this once again just avoiding those recessed areas painting in the middle of the flat areas and with that the white armor plating is complete and now I can move on to the next detail which is going to be Opie ones belt now for this we're going to start off with a base coat of doom ball brown from Citadel before washing over it using strong tone from the army painter and once that's completely dry we'll then highlight it using scrag Brown from Citadel first of all only our base coat of doom ball brown and I'm going back to my medium layer brush from Citadel to apply this and this is quite straightforward this part now all you got to do is as always get your paint ready and once you've done so it's just a matter of blocking in this detail and on here there are lots of other smaller details and powders and things like that but for the time being we just want to basically at the whole area going right up to that darker roots a shading that we had from the roads once you finish that base coat see then ready to apply a coat of a strong tone all over the leather work and once that washes dry you're then ready to move on to scrag Brown apply to the small layer brush this time and this is just a highlight on all this leather detail on the belts it's gently skimming along just catching the edges and the raised texture and there we are the leather of the belt is now finished and we'll come back to it later on for those metal details but at this point everyone is actually well on the way to being finished but of course we're not actual done anything on his head yet so now we're going to start painting that first of all going to be painting his skin and we're going to go into a bit of detail on this but to get things started we're just going to start out with a base coat of Bookmans glow before shading over the flesh with a bright and fleshy shade and then adding a layer of kadian flesh tone so first of all what we need is some Bookmans glow and I'm going to use my medium layer brush from Citadel to apply this and for this first step all we need to do is make sure that we base coat all the skins but what about the hair and all that just yet so make sure you got your paint thin down so it's going to retain all that definition in detail from it and all you need to do is begin to have by just painting all the skin and don't forget to get his neck and also his ear as well with the basecoat done we're then ready to apply rifle and flesh shade all over the skin and as you paint this on just be really careful when you get close to the armor especially around the shoulder just here once that shades completely dry with then ready to start applying some kadian flesh tone as a layer start to build up the skin tone and for this I'm going to be going into this expecting to be applying two thin coats of it because you can see the first one is quite thin this is on purpose because it allows me to when I'm applying that second coat to emphasize the detail a little bit more in certain areas and develop a stronger color and retain some definition in the recesses and that's particular important here on a characters face because you can see there's really a furrowed brow here a real expression and concentration going on and I want to bring that out so you can see I'm just very gently looking for the areas where more shade is collected and I'm avoiding them and this first coat being transparent it becomes very pinkish but it's now giving me lots of control because as it's dry I can then apply a second coasters on the nose here and you see it's not to make the color stronger so this way I can use that second coat to start to really strengthen the color in those particular areas and give it lots more definition so you need to take your time now just looking for all those recesses avoiding them then building the last second thin coat very carefully to bring out the expression with that layering done we're now ready to move on to painting in the finer details of the face and to begin we're gonna add two highlights so first of all we'll need some kids left flesh for this followed by a little bit of a shabby bone but after that we've got some more details to paint in the face and first of all we're using a tiny bit of wild wood followed by some droopy violet as well but first of all we need some kids left flesh and I'm going back to my smaller brush to apply this and what we want to do with this color is really bring out the bone structure the face mostly and any wrinkles and things too so we don't need very much of it just make sure that you've got that good point in your brush and it's nicely diluted so to about that and like with the previous color expect me applying to coach this for it to really show but that's a good thing we can he get a nice smooth transition between this new color on the one you had previously so for this I'm going to start out by following up bone structure and because of his beard and mustache there's not really that much it visible but the obvious one is the nose we want to go down the very center of it and then just widen it out a little bit as you get towards the bottom so on either side then we're gonna leave the lower lip a little bit darker than the upper one but you can see on his cheekbones you can see how the light is catching the upper part of it there just beneath his eyelid so what I do is emphasize that a little bit more the tiny bit is colors running very gently along there like that and a bit across the brow as well just going down there like that and on the forehead you can see how it's got that furrowed brow so I want to follow that texture as I go further up and rather than paint in the whole area instead what I'm going to do is just paint some wrinkles going up so it's just some gentle lines just there and just there and a little bit visible just there like that you see just really exaggerate the expression on his face next we're gonna add a very fine highlight of a sham t-bone which I've thinned down with some water and what I'm gonna do is just use this to emphasize the very most defined features of the face so in this case it's going to be just a little bit on the end of the nose just there a little bit on the cheekbones just at the very top of them so along there and also a little bit on the brows and this should be very subtle it really is just a final color just to finish it off now we finished the highlights the next stage is to get a very small amount of wild wood and your finest brush this is a detail brush from the army painter just here what going to do is run a very small amount of this into the very deepest recess of the eye so just along there what this does is just gives the impression that the eyes have been painted and it adds a bit more to the character the miniature so I don't normally go to this sort of length on doing eyes but this just really adds to it especially as being a special character and finally I'm now it's gonna add a very small amount of drew key violets which are thin down with a little bit of water and what to do is just paint this onto the bags underneath the eyes and what this does it's just add a little bit of subtle color to the face and a bit more life to the miniature as well see there's only very small amounts and very subtle but it does look very very nice with that done we're now ready to move on to painting Obi Wan's hair for this we're gonna start town with a base coat of Mourne Fang Brown from Citadel before washing over it with some strong tone from the army painter and then we'll highlight it with a little bit of scrag Brown but first of all I need to base coat it with more on finding Brown for which I'm going to use the smaller brush once again and the trickiest part about doing this step is just making sure that you base coat all the hair without catching any of the flesh that we've done so far so just make sure that paints dilute it it will be a bit transparent but just apply two thin coats of course and this way you can get back control and also get the solid color in the end and so all we need to do for this step is just to pick out that hair and you can see a cost some of it goes across the face so just be very careful as you pick those parts out but it allows you to neaten up the edges of the skin as well as you work your way around once the base coat is done with then ready to apply a coat a strong tone over the hair now for this we need to be careful of precise and applying it so I'm using my smaller brush once more and what I do is start out on the top of the head like this where it's relatively safe to apply it and it's not going to splash into any detail and this means you can then use that almost as you power to draw some of the wash a bit close these details was the front is particularly around the fringe here where we need to be as neat as we can so it's not to get it onto the skin and once the wash is dry we're ready to apply our first highlight which is scrag Brown now for the hair on top of the head what we want to do is just skim it using the side of your brush to catch the raised texture like this but Obi Wan's hair is actually a little bit lighter around his moustache and ran as beer so as we get down to that part instead just layer it a little bit stronger so just very gently just start poking the brush in there like that working the way or down that hair like that so you see the color is lighter generally around this area then we get to up here to transition it once you've done it around the beard and he's starting at the sideburns just gradually become a little bit lighter with your brush strokes as you work up the texture on the side without halide done we're now going to add a second fine a highlighting for this rash can a mixer paint using scrag browns to the Halloween used previously but mixed with a shabby bone to make it a little bit lighter now for this I'm actually going to make the mix by using my rotating brush from the army painter and it's just because it's a larger brush it's a bit more robust it's good for this kind of thing I'm actually going to be applying it using a detail brush in the army painter but I don't want to damage the bristles at all so it's a good idea to you mix using a larger brush like this so I'm going to go for roughly 50/50 here so it was shoved about as well and like we did earlier when we're doing that mix I start with the paint separate and then gradually bring them together like this until I get to the color tone that I want and I'm looking for something sort of like that nice lighter color there okay so with that done we can now start getting it ready to be applied so back to the detail brush in the army painter here thin that down so we got that nice thin version and we want that transparency just there so you want to dilute it kind of like that there we go and then what we're gonna do is start applying this to the hair but it's slightly different depending on where exactly we're going to be painting it on so for the hair on top of his head what I'm going to be doing is looking for where it's gonna catch the light which is going to be along here where you can see it's kind of growing from his head just there so what we want to do is just paint very small amounts of this just in this part here just to catch the light and exaggerate that a little bit more there we go now the hair is actually a lighter color when we get down to his mustache and to the beard so for this what we want to do is apply a highlight all the way along this part and I'm gonna be painting it on here as lines like this so I get the texture of the hair so you see just gently building it up like that and the same will then be true as we go down for his beard just around there so the goal here is that it should be a little bit lighter around there and then following that part of his head on the top there and with that Obi Wan's head is complete and all we need to do now is to paint the lightsaber now for this we're going to start out with the metal parts of it and so we'll start by applying some gunmetal for a base coat from the army painter first of all for the silver details followed by some rich Beauty armor from Citadel for a small gold detail that's on there now after that we'll shade over all this metal with some dark tone from the army painter and then for a highlight what we'll need is shining silver also from the army painter but first of all I need that base coat of gunmetal and so what I'm going to do is returned normal palate for applying this so I don't contaminate the wet palate with any metallic flakes and what we need to do once I got our paint ready because you use the smaller brush to get it thinned down there you go and then already start painting this onto all the metal parts or the lightsaber now there are some metal parts on the belt but don't worry about those for now we just need to paint these large areas first of all and to begin with we have the emitter which is just here and then also we've got the very bottom of the hilt as well which is this part around here next we need a very small amount of retribution armor for the lightsaber and it's just for this little collar that we've got just beneath the emitter so it's this part all the way around here now those base coats have been applied we're ready to paint some dark tone all over the metal this is both the gold and the silver and finally we're ready to highlight all the metal of the lightsaber using shining silver we just want to follow all the raised areas and edges very gently like this to give them a nice shine to them now also at this stage we can pick out all the metal details on the belt which are all quite small for example a little d-ring that we've got just here all you need to do is just pick them out very gently with this color and there we are the metal is now done and all we need to do is to paint the actual blade of the lightsaber which offers quite unique challenge here because of course the blade of a lightsaber is a beam of light which we can't really just paint so what we gonna do is well look at one of the ways you can do this there are load loads of different ways you can get the effect but the one that I like is one that gives the impression of the actual effect of the blade when you look at the miniature from a certain point of view now this is the golden angle of the miniature it's what it most commonly has photographed that way you can see all the detail and so you'll see we'll use this angle as we pain this effect to do it we need to start out with a darker blue first of all it's got a nice vibrancy to it so I'm gonna use some called--or sky from citadel then after that I'm going to be using tech list blue followed by temple guard blue then we're going to move on to Bharath blue before finishing off add some matte white from the army painter but first of all when you colored or sky and to apply this I'm gonna go for my medium layer brush because for this first step all you want to do is paint the entire blade of this color so as always it get your paint ready and once you've done so it's just a matter of coating the entirety of the blade so we want to paint all of this going all the way down to the hilt with the base coat done we can now move on to Texas blue and we also need to consider what that golden angle of the miniature is going to be which is pretty much this angle just here so we need to do the effect going from this direction so with that in mind then with Texas blue what we want to do is angle the miniature so that we're approaching that side of the blade that we want and what we gonna do is just paint a fairly broad line running all the way down it like this so very gently the idea being that when you look at it from the angle again you have a little bit of called--oh sky still visible on either side now that we know where the light part of the blades going to be we're ready to move on to temple guard blue and repeat this process only with a slightly narrower line this time so fall in the same area but just keeping a little bit of that text blue still visible on either side of this color next up we need a little bit of batter off blue once again following the same kind of area but an even narrower line this time so remember just take your time use a smaller brush I've gone for a small layer from cities I'll just here and just very gently apply this light color right in the middle of the area that we've been doing so far and finally we just need a little bit of a pure white and I'm using matte white from the army painter here and this is just for the very center of that blue we just want a thin liner this white going all the way down the blade now once you've done this your miniature is ready to be based and as always you want to base him in the same way as the rest of your army for everyone I'm gonna go for a grass fans base to be like Naboo [Music] and with the base now fully painted obi-wan kenobe is complete and ready to lead the force to the Republic into battle against the separatists as you've seen in this video painting obi-wan Kenobi isn't actually very difficult at all but just remember that golden angle especially for the blade of the lightsaber now we really hope you enjoyed this video and that it has in fact been the video that you've been looking for anyway now go about your business move along move along [Laughter] [Music] you
