you today from mousetrap Monday I'm going to show you how to make what I consider to be the two best styles of mousetraps available on the market today even better after watching this video and seeing the new system you'll be able to catch so many more mice I'm talking about the rolling log and walk the plank mousetraps they both work with a five gallon bucket the rolling log you drilled two holes put it in there put bait in the middle might come along lose their balance and get dumped into the bottom of the bucket you can add water and make it a kill trap or leave the water out and make it a live animal trap to walk the plank just sits on the edge of a five-gallon bucket you have a ramp they come up to get the bait on the end get dunked and then it resets that's what's so great about both these traps they don't require batteries they catch multiple mice it reset themselves and they work really well I've caught up to 15 mice in one night with these traps now when I first featured the rolling log people instantly started trying to improve it the first improvement was adding an obstacle here a little donut in the middle that way the mice with really good balance I call them ninja warrior mice have to go over this obstacle just another way to lose their balance and get caught now the biggest problem I had with both of these traps or mice like to hang on the edge of the bucket and try to take your bait these work with square buckets and round buckets and I came up with a new system that eliminates the problems of the mice hanging on and it has to do with lowering them and putting the traps actually in the bucket you can even put a lid I came up with this system after trying to catch rats with a larger version of walk the plank mouse trap rats are so much smarter they don't like going on something not stable so we had to come up with some tricks to beat them outsmart them and it works on mice too so the first thing I'm going to do is show you how to do the setup then we'll test it with our pet mice and then go show you with motion cameras how well this works with wild mice now the first change you might want to consider is getting a container larger than the standard five-gallon bucket this is a trash can I got at the hardware store and what's so great about this is if taller is 20 inches tall that gives you extra height you need to make this trap so effective now you'll notice that the top opening is larger than a standard five-gallon bucket that way your trap can sit lower and you can lid on here close it off they have to enter through the side and can't steal your bait from the top or hold onto the edge so to set up this trap the first thing you'll need to do is drill holes in the side the same as you would with the standard five-gallon bucket set up to drill those right through that we got one side and now we'll just do the other with those holes drilled to trap spins nicely now all we need is a place for the mice to enter on either side to do that I'm going to use a one and a half inch hole saw that worked really well we now have a hole about assertive the way down from the bucket we can put a ramp the mice will enter they can't hang out on the rim or try to jump from the sides they have to go on the roller much more likely to catch all the mice even the ones with really good balance the last step for this trap is to add the ramp so the mice can enter here I cut two pieces of wood I put slot so it'll be easy for them to climb up cut angles here so they fit nicely on the ground and the trap and we're just going to screw through the bucket into these and make them really secure our new and improved rolling log mousetrap setup is ready to go we're gonna test this out with our pet mice first I'm going to put some bedding material in there give them a little soft landing so they don't hit the hard plastic bottom and we'll see how it works for this test will use our brown mouse viewers named him Indiana Jones now that her pet mouse has demonstrated how well the new modified system for the rolling log mousetrap works I'm going to show you how to make a better system for walk the plank style traps these traps are designed to fit on the edge of a five-gallon bucket with this groove that's on there just like that now this style of trap still works really well but the flaws are mice will come hang on the edge of the bucket and also almost about a third of the trap is outside the bucket we want to move as much of the trap inside and lower it as possible that way mice can't hang on the edge and all of the trap is inside so we have to cut a hole on the side and attach it now I spoke with the manufacturer who originally made this and he came up with this trap it's basically the same design except it has a groove here that way when you cut your hole this will slide into the edge of the bucket and more of the trap is inside I also came up with my own design which is basically the same thing except I put a rounded back that fits on the end of the bucket like that that way you can drill through with screws and all of the trap is 100% inside the bucket so now we need to cut the hole and I'll show you how to set this up with this style trap which you can purchase on ebay you just cut a square in the edge that's another advantage to using these taller garbage cans with thinner plastic is you can easily cut it with a razor blade now what I'm going to do for the other side is just cut a small round hole big enough for the mouse to enter and then I'll show you how to set up the traps now that our holes are cut we can slide this style trap right into that square hole you put the groove on the edge of the bucket and put it down it doesn't require any screws to secure it it's ready to go with the ramp this style has a hole but we need to secure the trap with some screws I'll use a power drill to do that we're now ready to add the ramps and test this out with our pet mice you'll notice on both these trap designs most of the trap or all of the trap is inside the bucket and this will work much better I'll screw in the ramps and then you can see how it works with our pet mice well both of our pet mice went out on the plank went to the end and got dunked in the bottom of the bucket I'm curious how well these new systems will work on wild mice in the barn so we're gonna go set up the rolling log next to walk the plank set up our motion cameras and see which one catches more mice if you don't want to deal with mice you can put water in the bucket they'll drown very quickly you don't have to deal with live mice YouTube then d monetizing my videos that show my dropping into buckets of water so I'm gonna leave the sawdust there and try to keep them alive we're gonna see how many mice we can catch let's go set up the motion cameras over the past few nights I've been testing out our new trapping system with motion cameras the results were really telling the most obvious that people are gonna comment on is these were not tall enough to be a live animal trap these screws here are 16 inches tall and mice can jump that high grab them and get out so if you're gonna keep this as a live animal trap I'd say they need to be at least 20 inches tall if not taller the results might not be what you want as well because if you confine them they might kill and eat each other I've had that happen before I prefer these traps as kill traps and you can take care of a lot of mice in one night right at the end I put just a few inches of water in this one and got two mice I'll walk the plank I moved this to a new location from the barn I was testing and also what I realized with this motion camera is how hard these traps are to beat the same mice kept coming back to get the bait over and over you can tell because some of them had bought flies and distinctive marks I don't know how many mice we had coming it was several but we kept catching the same ones in both traps and over and over they kept trying to get over this and we get dunked and they kept going on walk the planks same results would get dunked so they can't learn how to beat this they kept getting caught I had to cut the footage back I actually have over an hour of footage of just them going on the rolling log and getting dunked and on the walk the plank and getting dunked so after seeing these in action I stand by my statement that these are the two most effective mouse traps available and with this new system you can take care of your rodent problem in a hurry thank you so much for supporting my channel by watching my videos if you're not subscriber please consider hitting that button because I'm going to be loading between two and five videos per week I got some good
