hey good morning guys how you doing chris rod here uh today we're talking about weeds weeds weeds weeds here in el paso we've had what's called the monsoon season everywhere else is either going through a dry spill or they've got some serious rain issues and flooding and whatnot and weeds are popping up all over and i'm going to show you some pictures throughout this video today of how you guys here in west texas or wherever you're at can take care of some weeds and have them disappear within i don't know six hours 24 hours one day turnaround time okay i'm gonna show you a couple products you guys can use um that i use in my own yard but check these weeds out and this is just a small scale of what i'm talking about as far as weeds inside of what we call zero escape here in el paso here we've got spotted spurge we've got some bermuda grass growing there as you can see it's everywhere over here and it's just kind of intermittent throughout my rock bed area and normally it never looks this bad and i call this bad okay and what i'm gonna be showing today is really bad okay and i've had some clients this past week that have got some overgrown weeds in their yard but um i let it get overgrown so i can one shoot this video and uh teach some of you guys here in west texas how to take care of this stuff let me show you the other side of the rock bed area here as you guys can see hopefully right down in there we three okay this is one of the products i'm going to recommend this is the number one product i'm going to recommend as far as taking care of these weeds in an expedited manner all right i'm going to go ahead and spray these and then we're going to follow up later this afternoon on just this side of the house and i'm gonna teach you guys how to spray the other side of the house later today and we'll show you the results of this area what's up guys how you doing all right i just got back home um we left this morning had client work today and i was shooting a video this morning and i sprayed some weeds okay and i used a product that i highly recommend okay that you homeowners here in el paso go get or wherever you're at if you guys are looking for a phenomenal non-selective herbicide control that is organic and that's going to take care of your weeds inside of your rock beds or any kind of zero escape that you might have and you want to spray it have results and not have to worry about it anymore you need to utilize that naturally okay so i just got back home i'm gonna show you some weeds that i sprayed this morning okay and this is actually let me see i'm gonna put a before picture here and then i'm gonna show you this right here and hopefully the light's not too much this area right here is what i sprayed with this one product okay and i'm gonna come bring in closer to these weeds look at that this stuff is smoked here's another one dying this stuff is dead you see that guys okay there's some more death we obviously need to respray that one but this is a matter of and again i just sprayed this area this morning and you can't even see weeds right there unless you get up and close and personal but i'm going to be spraying the additional weeds that we have over here and uh talk about some other herbicides that you guys could be using inside of your xeroscape or inside your lawns um during this rainy monsoon season all right guys real quick i just want to show you um some of the more popular ways here in el paso that a lot of your lawn care guys or the neighborhood guys are taking care of weeds inside of rock bed areas i'm going to show you two tools one is a weed whacker trimmer edger however you want to call it however you want to use it the other one is this handy dandy little tool we call it an action hoe looped blade design and what it's designed to do i'm guessing i've used these um it's designed to essentially go underneath the rock and scrape the weed under the rock and scrape the weed there are some serious issues that i have with this thing and there's some serious issues that i have with a weed whacker or a trimmer edger um that we're going to be talking about and the most preferred method method in my opinion is getting to the problem sooner than later spraying some herbicides trying to shoot a video do you mind okay so what i'm looking for is i'm going to be taking care of some of this grass down here i'm going to show you i'm going to be using the trimmer and this other tool that i have to show you what it's like to take care of these and why i don't like them okay let's see if i can shoot this without that over the dog okay so this first tool here again it's designed to get underneath the rock and you simply scrape the weed or grass and it comes right up it kind of digs the root out if you will it's probably not getting 100 of the root but it's scraping these weeds or this grass right here it's kind of free my problem with it though it didn't even get that one they kind of got that one my problem with this though is it makes this dent you see the discoloration and it makes this hole so what you have to do is you have to go back and re-level or re-grade this rock okay now a lot of the times the rock here if you get deep enough it's got screening underneath it okay so what happens and this is primarily why i don't like this tool what happens is is as you're scraping these weeds if you get deep enough uh you're going to start mixing up the screening and whatever size rock you have so you got to go back in there re-level and you're messing up the grade of the actual screen okay so that's the number one reason why i don't like this too uh this tool two it i don't think it just it doesn't do a great enough job in my opinion all right the next tool okay a trimmer or edger essentially the biggest problem i have with this and you see this all the time here is that they're gonna start the edger start the trimmer and they're gonna start cutting down the weeds okay they're going to start cutting down the weeds and they're going to use it as a horizontal and what happens is you get an amateur guy you get a rookie guy they go full throttle you go full throttle you're gonna be flinging these rocks everywhere that's the most dangerous part about it and that's what i dislike about it you see it all over instagram you see it all over youtube facebook um business owners out there in this industry posting pictures of broken doors glass doors windows i had a consultation a day and this literally no joke the client that was previously servicing this property was flinging rocks around and nicked some windows okay this is the biggest problem i have with it but i'm going to demonstrate how it's done and then i'm going to demonstrate you know a way you can do it but very minimalized damage okay or you know just kind of ease up on it um [Music] [Applause] ah [Applause] all right so that's kind of the easy way now this is what you normally see when guys are trying to do this in an expedited manner [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so this is the problem i have with this is that right there okay so as you guys are doing the edging they're flinging rocks all over the place uh those rocks i'm kind of taking it easy obviously no vehicles here but if i was doing this on the median or closer to the vehicles i guarantee you you're going to fling a rock into a vehicle and a windshield and crack it shatter it whatever you guys want to call it that's the downside to doing this therefore best recommendation i can have for you guys is treat it with a herbicide okay catch it early enough if it's too tall go ahead and cut it down trim it a little bit do not go full throttle cut it down below that that fifth tiller stage give it a nice trimming and then treat it with a non-selective herbicide [Applause] all right real quick before i get into the herbicides what i do want to mention is that when you guys make a selection on your herbicide you need to get yourself a little bottle of this diyers this is the diy product right here if you got a baby at home great if not go get yourself a little bottle of it or order it online get yourself an 80 20 or any kind of surfactant okay surfactant is going to enhance any of these products 100 okay the baby not baby oil baby shampoo what it does is it acts like a surfactant okay and what is a surfactant it's simply a product that we apply in the mix with the hand pump sprayer with the canister with the concentrate okay we apply an additional uh product called the surfactant and what it does is essentially simply takes that herbicide mixture and it breaks down the molecule the water molecule into a finer mist if you will a a smaller water spray water molecule and what it does is it sticks to the plant it makes the herbicide stick to the plant as opposed to a water molecule that does not have one of these surfactants kind of dribble off of the grass blade or dribble off of the weed roll off if you will what it does is it helps make the herbicide stick to the plant that's the most important part when i first started you can start using this the same way it's just some baby shampoo or you can get yourself some of this order from amazon uh there's a bunch of other retail stores what i'm focusing on is i'm trying to help you guys here in the city of el paso texas okay uh and the reason for that is hey i live here two i do business here and three uh we just went through some crazy amounts of rain right we just we're still in our monsoon season we're getting these sporadic showers we've got more rainfall this season uh more than i can remember it's probably been at least almost 10 to 15 i think 2008 was when we got six seven inches of rain in a matter of seven days which isn't a lot for a lot of people elsewhere but here in el paso in the desert that's a crazy amount of rain okay so the city of el paso has focused on zero scape okay and essentially what that is is where the builders in el paso are essentially only required to put down um or those that do the landscaping for the new home constructions or those that are previously established developed areas are only required to have three percent of their uh property with um landscaping whether it be trees or shrubs or grass or bushes three percent of the whole square footage okay and it's not a lot okay they push for zero escape hard surfaces because of our desert environment and our water crisis where we're trying to conserve water as much as possible and one of the methods that the city has reluctantly come across you know not allowing or permitting but requiring is that everybody has to have at least three percent of your uh landscaping so what they do with the other 97 is the hardscape okay the homes the driveways the patios the brick pavers uh the pool decks etc blah blah blah blah blah and rocks the whole city is covered in freaking rocks okay uh there's here on the east side you know depending on which side of town you are unless you're on the upper valley which is by the rio the rio grande river you're gonna have a front yard with grass here on the east side and anywhere else you go there's freaking hardscape okay and the problem with that is that you know a lot of homeowners we don't spray pre-emergents uh inside the rock beds because we put weed barrier fabric underneath the rocks okay that's a typical landscaping process with the rock installation here in el paso so you know when you're doing pre-emergent applications that product alone that herbicide alone is designed to penetrate the soil system and reside within the first one to two inches of the soil and create a vapor barrier okay to help protect against weeds well if we put a weed barrier underneath the rocks it's hard to penetrate that weed barrier especially if it's like a four mil or six mil plastic you can't penetrate that to get to the soil system for a pre-emergent to do his job okay now on top of that that that weed barrier there is a screening that's put down sometimes it's put down and then you know your half inch three quarter inch inch two inch and above rock goes on top of the screening now you could technically put that pre-emergent and soak that into the screening or on top the rock water it in and it soaks down in the screening and then that kind of help and i've seen the big brand names here in el paso true green do that where they'll spray the blanket spray a whole rock bed area and um you know that's their pre-emergent applications if you will i've also seen uh some of the bigger brand name companies do a blanket spray on rocks a thousand two thousand square foot rock bed area in the front yard and you can tell they did a blanket spray because the whole lawn went from a white rock or a flagstone or not a flagstone a cobblestone and it's all blue the whole rock bed's blue why because they put the dye inside the herbicide right so you know they did a blanket spray so their intention was to try to kill every weed that's visible or if they're doing a pre-emergent to go ahead and do a blanket spray and that kind of helps protect against weeds so to speak the efficacy or the um efficiency of that pre-emergent inside of a rock bed area how you know how good of a job does it do it's hard to say but what i can tell you and this is the topic of the video today and um has to do with the rainy season okay we have got an exuberant amount of growth inside of all the medians inside of the city all everybody that's got rocks inside their landscaping are now experiencing massive amount of weeds okay and i'm gonna show you some some pictures that i've taken either from my own clients or uh you know some randoms that i've seen throughout this city uh of some of the growth that we're experiencing and i'm here today in this video to teach you guys how to take care of that okay what we have to understand is that there's a process okay involved with maintaining zero escape or rock bits for this instance and the first step you have to take is to not let it get out of control when we do herbicide applications there is a certain growth stage of a grass or a weed that is permittable before you do an application of a herbicide and if it gets too tall in this case right now in the city there are weeds that are at least 12 to 18 and sometimes three feet freaking tall when it gets too tall you're going to be paying some extra labor costs okay you're going to be spending some more time out there as a diy er chopping that stuff down you cannot apply you should not apply any of these herbicides to a weed once it's reached the fifth the fifth tiller stage or taller okay the fifth tiller stage each weed has like a tree a different style it has one stock and then it has a different branch system okay each branch system is what's referred to as this tiller stage once it gets beyond a certain tiller stage or height the the the efficacy of a herbicide is minimalized okay it's it's reduced drastically so that's the first step is do not let your weeds get out of control okay you need to stay on top of this stuff okay the second step if right now for example you've got massive amount of weeds and they're just taller than crab or they're spreading throughout the whole lawn the sand bird weed is one of the the hardest weeds to get rid of and it produces you know you'll see it spread and it's got like a little yellow flower all over it and next thing you know those little yellow flowers turn into the sambers or thorns or stickers okay and then now you've got this mat this carpet looking thing full of stickers okay and it's gonna spread and it's gonna keep spreading you cannot let it get out of control you just can't do that and if you guys are it's very irresponsible essentially okay you gotta stay on top of this stuff before somebody the city comes and starts giving you guys citations okay so step one don't let it get out of control step two is um one of two things if it is out of control you gotta chop it down you gotta get it cut down you leave a little leaf tissue on there that can be sprayed that's really step two if it's overgrown um you know step two b if you will is to start applying the herbicides as soon as you start seeing weeds okay if you know there's going to be forecasts you know we got some rain coming don't apply it you don't want to waste product you don't want to risk wash off wait until you got a good day a day that is sunny like today we're in the low 90s there's no wind whatsoever you can apply some herbicide okay early morning or early late evening i should say once you are below 90 degrees a lot of your label application rates are going to let you know that it is safe to apply herbicide once uh temperatures are below 90 degrees okay 85 90 degrees okay the next thing you guys need to understand are the different types of herbicides okay and we all know the name brands out there okay and i'm not going to get into the litigations about any of these name brands you've got to make a decision whether you are for applying herbicides or whether you're not if you're not get your little stool get a screwdriver and go start pulling some freaking weeds okay get your trimmer out and start trimming some of those weeds down okay just don't trim too fast because you don't want to fling rocks everywhere and start breaking windows okay if you were for herbicides okay and you're you're okay with them you've got options you've got organic herbicides that are safer in the environment okay that are omri listed uh you got some that are not omri listed okay and then you've got your brands that are either household names or they're sitting on the back self and you don't know how to read the active ingredient okay so here's step three is get yourself some herbicide and start putting it down whether it be a concentrated herbicide or one that is something you can simply attach to the water hose and spray the lawn okay what we want to understand and i'm kind of talking about two things uh as far as herbicides go is that you've got herbicides that are non-selective herbicides which are going to be these two guys right here natria and knockout wheat grass killer or your roundup okay those are referred to as non-selective herbicides non-selective meaning it does not select which weed or which grass to kill or not to kill non-selective literally means it is going to decimate anything it touches a vegetable a tree a plant a rose bush a grass a weed okay anything a human being if this stuff comes in direct contact over 20 plus years that's where the lawsuits come in okay this literally can cause some damage okay understand that's what a non-selective herbicide is okay you have to be careful with that you do not want to spray a non-selective in your grass selective herbicides that's the second type of herbicide selective herbicides are those that are safe for lawns some lawns okay because you have selective herbicides that you can select a grass that is growing in a southern grass that you want to kill a northern grass okay for example i've got bermuda grass behind me and say for some crazy reason or let me just be straight 100 the rye grass it's a northern grass type that we did an overseeding with last season and earlier this year if you scroll back to through some of my videos we did an application of metro furon methyl which is a selective herbicide to remove a northern grass type from bermuda from a southern grass type okay that is an example of a southern grass type uh i'm sorry not a southern grass a selective uh herbicide okay so going back to selective herbicides each herbicide has different percentages of active ingredients okay and those active ingredients is what's important to understand um i'm gonna move that out of the way but these are probably two of your best that you can get from home depot or lowe's this is a this is probably the best for the diy get yourself some bio advance okay this is probably the best thing you can get it is a concentrate you do have to put this in a pump sprayer mix it with some water and then you can apply it to the lawn this is for southern weed killer for lawns okay kills broadleaf weeds it's got some 2 4 d dimethylamine and some dicamba and again this is a concentrate this is a selective herbicide for it kills over 200 types of broadleaf weeds right there on the back of the label 200. here's another one this is a spectracide weed stop for lawns concentrate see the result in hours okay and i'm not trying to promote any of these products i'm simply you're trying to differentiate between selective herbicides things that have active ingredients when you guys are making your selection and you're staring at the big old wall at home deport lowe's the only thing you need to pay attention to is the active ingredient this little black spot down here all this other crap don't even worry about it down here is what you need to worry about okay actually i take that back what you do want to make sure is you get one that's you know kills weeds but safe for the lawn and typically they say that weed killer four lawns if it says four lawns that means it's not gonna kill your grass it's going to take care of the weed issue the only additional thing i will say about that is you want to make sure that you read the label okay in our line of work the label is the law meaning you need to go through all the little pages back here word for word and make sure that this uh particular selective herbicide is safe for your grass type so for example i know for a fact that these two herbicides these two selective herbicides are safe for southern lawns meaning bermuda saint augustine centipede zoysia um and i i if i read the label and i get into these they can also apply to some southern or northern lawns like tall type fescue or kentucky blue grass okay when you get into some of the products that we use like metro feral methyl or tenacity or tribute total um oh god what's another one uh century is another when we start doing some more commercial grade stuff that's where we as applicators got to be a little bit more careful because those more um pylex is a really good example uh those selective herbicides that you guys are probably never buy aren't safe for northern grass types and that can be completely flipped around from northern grass types that are trying to control reeds up north that can kill southern grass types like bermuda okay so getting back to the point in hand we've got rocks we've got weeds we've got issues these selective herbicides do not waste your money when you're trying to kill the weeds in your rock beds okay this is for grass when you guys are targeting weeds inside of your concrete patios your pavers your cracks and crevices on your driveway your rock bed your landscape areas even in some of your mulch bed areas be careful not to spray your bushes or your shrubs and your mulch beds you need to get a non-selective herbicide okay now again going back to the active ingredient what you need to pay attention to is the small fine print on these things when you shop for these big old bottles understand going back to the difference you've got some that come with these little nozzles this is a concentrate that you can simply buy plug in and start spraying your weeds right and then you've got these other containers they've got these nozzles but you can't just pour this on a weed guys this is a concentrate it's a matter of fact it even says super concentrate when you get something like knockout okay weed and grass killer it's letting you know right there that it's going to kill anything it touches okay going back to zero skip el paso listen pay attention to the active ingredient a lot of you guys are walking into the big box stores and you're seeing the big blue and white bottles right there in front of you where the big black and green and gray bottles and you see oh god that's a big old jug and it's for freaking 12 bucks i i need to get it but you keep having to buy it and you keep having to buy it and you keep having to buy it and then you have to call it professional because you say hey chris i've been spraying and spraying and nothing's happening these weeds aren't dying or i sprayed and i'm still getting notifications from the city understand your active ingredient percentages okay when you're looking for these products cost it out okay now this particular product does contain glyphosate but at a 41 grade or 41 active ingredient of the glyphosate this one bottle same size as the big brand names roundup for example you can get this same bottle for the same price if not cheaper versus roundup that's only got two percent of active ingredient 41 or 2 percent chris is only spraying one time and i'm done you guys get it pay attention to the active ingredient now this right here again the only reason why i'm bringing this to your attention is because i love this product okay the only other one that i use besides this on a commercial level is amir michi okay miramichi is expensive it's active ingredient okay it's not glyphosate miramichi is organic omri listed this natria it's not omri listed it doesn't say so anywhere on here but um you will see results by the end of the day versus a 7 to 14 day window okay make sure you guys are spraying when the temperatures are appropriate make sure you don't have any wind blowing around make sure it's a nice warm day get to it early in the mornings if you guys are buying a concentrate make sure you buy a hand pump sprayer so you can mix it with the appropriate amount of water read your labels labels of law start spraying your guys's rock bed areas pick a product if you got any questions go ahead and leave me a comment below don't forget to subscribe and like i'm here to help you guys out as much as possible that's it if you have any questions let me know
