hey guys welcome back to the channel my name is Chris in this video well yep we're gonna talk about spray foam insulation I decided to spray foam this metal building and I learned a lot along the way plus after about a month or so I've learned what I would do differently and what I really like I'm gonna detail that and we're gonna insulate that rolling metal door it's gonna be pretty cool really awesome technique I learned from a fellow maker I'll link him down below more about that later but first let's get into it thanks so what is spray foam right is it this or is it this I cleaned it up well of course it's neither one of those spray foam is a type of installation and it's a pretty good one at that it could be a bit pricey and I have detailed how this building was the spray foam in a previous video my dream shop build I like that down below whatever reason you haven't seen that yet I encourage you to finish with this video not now when you finish with this one to go down there and check it out it's pretty cool process but I'm gonna show you how they did this and without further ado do like I've said many times before let's get right into this okay a little overview about what spray foam insulation is well spray foam is a chemical product created by two materials isocyanate and polyol resin which react when mixed with each other and they expand up to 30 to 60 times their liquid volume when it's sprayed in place it gets into the nooks and crannies of all kinds of surfaces that's why in the building industry it's very useful it's so useful because of its thermal resistance now there are three types of heat transfer in this world there's convective conductive but the main one we're after and trying to prevent is radiant heat transfer now if you're up north this will keep the heat in in the winter and if you're down south like me this will definitely keep the cold air in in the summer okay so here's the shop in its current state now this is when a dream come true really has and when I build this I decided well because of the fact that this building is a metal building and it's it's five feet every stud well I figured I would spray foam it now what did I learn well I knew that spray foam was a bit costly typically a space like this 16 feet high 13 foot walls 30 by 20 all right those are the dimensions it was gonna be about $4,500 however I decided to do this in the winter time here in Jacksonville Florida now I'm sure it's probably the opposite if you do it up north that you know during the winter here nobody really cares about insulation too much because it's really nice weather so they ran a deal for $1,000 off so I paid $3,500 to spray foam this building that being said I'm gonna share a few more details with you about some of the well let me explain let's talk about the color in which spray foam is alright it's yellow it's not even really an attractive yellow either and it means a lot to me because it casts kind of a yellow hue down on this shop now if I didn't film in here I didn't produce videos in here it may not be that big of a deal but it is a big deal and one of these days I'm gonna come back and I probably mask everything off and spray it white now for thought I should have done that before I knew I was gonna be putting up plywood walls which have a yellow color to them anyway and I should have done that while this was just the shell man for thought you know hindsight's always 20/20 a couple other things I wanted to tell are another downside to Spray Foam is once it's done is it done I mean yeah you could dig through to try to find maybe an electrical problem or maybe a leak somewhere however this being a tall metal structure if a leak were to happen it wouldn't rot any wood away it would just kind of sit there and it would probably produce some some mold who knows but you know that's one of the things you get into with spray foam is that you know it's going to be a completely just about permanent solution everything is going to be hidden behind it and the I think the pros outweigh the cons but that is something to consider is that you just can't go and fix a problem with spray foam like you came with regular insulation so you might want to think about that if you're building a shop that is all wood timber frame structure that kind of thing I do have a little bit of wood in here I did sister a two by fours on either side of the metal studs and because of that maybe I should have put a moisture barrier around the structure before putting the siding on but it just wasn't one of the things I thought about and who knows it may come back to buy me or it may not let me give you one more thing that I wish I would have done differently and it's over here okay the last thing I would have done in terms of insulating this shop not necessarily a knock on the spray foam like some of the other things I've said but was they get an actual door that was insulated it may be an electronic you know standard garage door this roll-up door is great I say that because it is huge 10 by 10 but it is like a radiator this thing if you're standing at the table saw and it's 90 degrees outside it's hot you can actually feel some of the heat even though we have a nice mini-split system in here now it is very very warm so to fix that I saw technique a gentleman used by the name of Zach Fernandez he's going Instagram I'm gonna link him down below this technique you're gonna see is his idea I'm not gonna take credit for it however we're going to do it right now so if you want to know how to insulate a middle door like this look no further check this out here we go so to get this party started we've got four sheets of Owens Corning 1 inch thick foam insulation this stuff comes in 4 by 8 foot sheets you can find it at your local big box store I'm gonna cut this down into three even sections that way all three pieces basically equal 10 feet and these little strips that we're cutting off you're gonna see here well I think my daughter took one outside and yep we're gonna go ahead and try to make some fun here I'm not sure if she was trying to swordfight me with him but either way we laid them down and eventually I decided to walk on I'm trying to teach her you know the floor is lava but hey as you see here she couldn't quite grasp the concept just yet this insulation comes pre-scored okay so I think that because of this I guess in various increments 16 inches between studs 24 inches who knows but anyway I don't like this it's not going to work for me so we're gonna fix this with a little bit I back tape and let's go ahead and get that done so I want to know from all the maker parents out there do your kids join you in the shop and if so did they start joining you when there are two three and four years old and I just want to know I want to hear from you guys I think it's one of the greatest things on the planet that they are out here with me they're gonna make memories as soon as they remember how to remember things that make sense and I think it's a really great thing to do so let me know down below what you think so back to this little spray adhesive on the piece and I'm gonna roll out some house wrap tape and then cut it to size the reason I'm not using well just the plain aesthetic of the purple or pinkish insulation one I can't stand the color lavender and two I think it's the same principle of you know I want to be able to look at this and not be sick of it for the same reason that didn't cloud my shop in osv I did Baltic birch I think it just looks better and that's where I went so I'm gonna reinforce the edges of this foam insulation with some tie bag tape and I'm basically gonna cover the entire surface with this stuff that is not the house wrap as well thank you she is such a fantastic helper love her being in the shop and I think she's gonna try to convince a certain company to maybe sponsor the channel just kidding but just listen to this okay Home Depot you heard the girl she has spoken how can you deny her I'm just kidding guys but now as I'm going through this I've run out of tape I got to put a new roll on here I'm gonna go ahead and take another section and I'm gonna wrap up the edges like this but first I want to let you know one more thing so I've run into a bit of a problem I should have thought about this earlier there is a foam strip that right cotton strip there rides up and down the entirety of the door on both sides now with this rigid installation it poses a problem because the magnet is not going to be able to get a good hold on this side so I'm gonna have to raise up just a little bit where the magnet attaches to the insulation and I think I've come up with an interesting way to do that so let's check that out so you heard me say magnets there I'm using rare earth magnets that are going to be attached to these blocks of plywood I'm gonna use some tight bond quick and thick to do that but that foam strip I mentioned or that cotton strip I mentioned is there on either side of the door to protect itself so it doesn't hit the door on the way up and down it's kind of like a little bit of a barrier so you don't have a metal-on-metal either way I figured how do you clamp a magnet to a piece of wood well why not put it on a metal surface like this a cast iron bandsaw table well that works just great so back to more tape and as you're gonna see I'm gonna put the final finishing touches here with the Tyvek tape and the entire foam is gonna be covered so to attach these I'm going to use yep CA glue star bond CA glue and activator I've got a 15 percent coupon code I mentioned that a lot in these videos but just in case you don't know if you want to get this what I think should be a ubiquitous tool with everyone shops CA glue check them out everything's in the description so all three of the eight foot sections of foam insulation get those four magnets in the four corners but now I'm turning my attention onto the two pieces that are going to be the top of the door these are two feet tall by it's five feet wide and in order to get them down and up well I need to attach the stick to them a music a piece of Baltic birch here and it's gonna start to purposes the first one being a reach I need to grab them to and from now the second one is gonna involve another rare earth magnet and I'm gonna put this in place here with a little star bond little activator and some house wrap tape as well and then here is the magic another piece of magnet or another magnet is gonna go right here [Music] okay here it is moment of truth the onion flight of doors behind me I'm gonna put those pieces up on the wall I'm gonna show you how this works it's really super cool okay so five panels first of which goes on here then the second one clicks right into place the third easy peasy lemon squeezy now look at that stick it clicked right into place on that other magnet and everything now becomes one huge insulated panel yeah okay let me give you some of the pros now about this spray foam insulation well one is its insulating power it is by far one of the best our values per inch you can find you're talking anywhere between five to seven I think this close sells about six six are an r-value of six per one inch I have an average of about three inches of spray foam in here and so do the math that's an 18-hour value and that was done in about three hours so pretty cool pretty cool process to watch as well but in terms of it being effective it's super effective now this AC unit in here it's a mini-split made by Greek not sponsored of course I bought this from my local dealer it is well it's a two time unit and it hardly has to stay on to keep this space temperate now especially I've noticed a big difference especially now that this door is insulated so I really appreciate you being here for this my thoughts on if I would do spray foam all over again is a resounding yes if you have enough cash and enough revenue to get that done by all means it really isn't that much more expensive on a space like this in terms of doing the ceiling and having to stud all these walls every 16 to 24 inches well I just wasn't going to do all that to do the insulation so spray foam was definitely the way to go all right those are my thoughts on the pros now I'm gonna give you my thoughts about this door and we'll finish this whole thing up well there you go that's this project complete I want to thank you guys for being here and I don't want the exact for the ideas well again he's linked down below now it's not the prettiest thing in the world right but I think my wife has an idea she's kind of a crafty lady she's got a cricket in there and and some and some various other things that she's gonna do I think we're gonna make something to make this look a little bit better but that's in a future episode okay all right now I want to say this this doesn't have to be exclusively done to a 10 by 10 foot door you can do this on your standard garage door like I used to have my own shop here's a picture of it right now that's the garage door that we used to have we still do and it's not insulated ah now I wish I would have done that way back when but typically I just opened the door because of the lack of space now I'll say this this door is gonna be rarely open during the summer it's just way too hot unless I get deliveries or something I need to get in and out of here I'm gonna be pretty much exclusively inside so this has made a huge difference just just being that is insane when you step next to that door without those it is extremely warm but now I can't even tell really cool alright guys that's it thank you for being here my name is Chris this has been a glimpse inside again I've got links all down below for products that use and different social medias and all kinds of stuff down there so check out the description and I thank you again and I'll see you on that next project so glad [Music]
