hey everybody welcome to jason explains things we're out here in my shop today to bring you another shop improvement video i've been doing a lot of projects out here improving this space uh and there's a video about each of these on the channel if you're interested from building those heavy duty storage shelves a mechanics workstation a heater and air conditioner for mr cool led lights all sorts of stuff i've been doing other projects out here too um woodworking motorcycle stuff i have been heating and cooling the space a lot more and it's starting to get a little noticeable on my utility bill the number one issue with temperature control in here is definitely these two garage doors you see behind me uh they are original to the shop when it was built in the late 90s and they're not that great as far as insulation is concerned from the outside of the shop you can see that the weather stripping around these two doors is completely toasted this side of the building faces south there's no shade around my shop at all and the sun just beats down on those two doors and the weather stripping all day long all year long i have looked into how much it would cost to replace those two doors and they would cost about a thousand dollars or more for each door and so we're not going to be doing that but we're going to be improving these existing doors for just a few hundred bucks today first step in our garage door project is we're going to be removing and replacing the old weather stripping with some brand new stuff i got from lowe's second and probably the most exciting for you all because you are excited right is we're gonna be installing some uh reflectix radiant bear uh uh radiant bear what do you call it this is reflectix radiant barrier insulation we're gonna be installing this to the inside of both doors with double-sided mounting tape besides looking cool it's not just for looks though it has a whopping r value of three but the number one uh benefit to this stuff is that it's a radiant barrier it actually prevents 96 of radiant energy getting through this stuff so you know when you have the sun beating on those doors the radiant heat energy will be bounced back outside and hopefully during the winter months it'll actually kind of bounce the heat back inside uh and it won't leak out so that's kind of the point of that i'll kind of get into a little bit more about the the science of this stuff in a little bit but let's get started on the project with removing the weather [Music] stripping [Applause] [Music] nature is betraying me with rain i lost my son anyway uh i went and took some uh primer and just kind of touched up the edge here because they're uh removing the old stuff revealed some bare wood so i'm probably the only person in town painting outside in january but uh you got to do what you got to do sometimes anyway let's uh wait for this to dry then put the new stuff on [Music] [Music] nice [Music] [Music] hi i am almost done oh if you noticed earlier i uh i notched this little corner and that is so when you butt up the two ends to each other you can get nice and flush so a couple pointers about installing this weather stripping first off you want this to nicely lay flat you don't want it to kind of have to curl up if it's curling out that means it's probably a little too close you need to back it off a little bit so you want to account for the flex of the door if it's being pushed in by the wind so as you can see here i'm pushing on the door but the seal is staying nice and flat so that was part of why while i was installing all this stuff i was pushing on the door and making sure that the seal still kept this nice so that's another thing you want to look out for [Music] okay well we got the doors nice and clean now they really needed it and you know obviously you want the doors to be clean if you want the double-sided tape that we're going to use in a little bit to stick now you might have noticed these doors have kind of an odd shape and and there's good things about it some negative things about it one negative is these gaps aren't going to be able to i won't be able to install the radiant barrier on top of this because i need access to the hinges and because um this needs to be flexible now one cool thing about the shape of this door is that actually it's it's allowing me to have a nice uh air gap in between the door and the radiant barrier right here um and uh the radiant barriers work a lot better if there is an air gap of about half an inch and i think that's almost half an inch and just for your viewing pleasure i will link to a few other videos and articles about radiant barriers and how to use them and how they work to kind of prove what i'm saying because i don't expect you to just believe me now the insulation of the reflectix couldn't be easier all i'm going to be doing is just obviously measuring it to length and and trimming it to width as well and then i'll be sticking it to the door with double-sided scotch mounting tape all right let's do it guys [Music] trimming all these guys up was definitely a bit of a chore kind of wore out my lower back but that's okay i'm old so i'm used to it all right mounting tape around the edges and then we're done [Music] nice wow [Music] all right for the two top sections of the doors you know we're dealing with the connection here for the top rollers on both sides we're dealing with a connection to the chain right there my original plan was i was going to use you know some scissors and just cut around this but i think there's nothing wrong with just disconnecting one at a time each one of these they're just 7 16 inch hex screws putting it on and then sandwiching it on there so that's what i'm gonna do wish me luck we'll find out if it's a bad idea [Music] and that works great [Music] [Music] awesome doors are closing and opening just right you can also hear as you know because of the new seals on the outside you'd be like that's awesome you can always it's definitely i think there's a little bit of soundproofing that's happened with this stuff too which is really really cool hey well that was a fun saturday afternoon project i'm really glad we got to that weather stripping that was probably two to six to eight years past due so i'm glad i finally got to that as for the reflectix radiant barrier insulation i'm going to be updating either the description or leaving a comment in the future and let you know if i notice an improvement in my utility bills one way or another but if anything i mean it's shiny and so that's cool and that will definitely come in handy for my upcoming star wars fan films i plan on making now this is pod racing i'll try spinning that's a good trick but anyway probably the next uh shop video i'm gonna be doing will be that corner over there uh improving that workbench adding some tool storage some shelving things like that i just throw stuff in that corner for now so please if you enjoyed this consider subscribing turning on notifications and clicking the all button because i'll be honest with you youtube doesn't really seem to be uh recommending jason explains things for some reason and it can't be because the quality is low because it's not [Music] thank you for watching again and until next time don't forget to do it yourself all right bye shiny right it's pretty cool
