with the newest update to stardew Valley here I figured it was finally time to release a modding tutorial for one of my favorite cozy games this tutorial will be for manual mod installation only on PC as I won't be covering Android modding for the game you can also mod stard Valley for the steam deck Mac and Linux systems however I've personally never moded it in those systems but from what I understand this process should work very similarly if not 100% the same for them let's start with the howto and work our way over to a few tips and tricks at the end it's important to note that modding for stardo Valley is all done in your stardew Valley game folder where yourex exe is located so it's important to know where that folder is and be able to navigate to it whenever you'd like if you're on Steam just simply rightclick your game and in the drop down that appears hover over manage and then select browse local files that should take you straight to your game folder from here you'll want to download both content Patcher and the smpi mod for stardew Valley I'll leave a link for both of those in the description as a quick note it looks like SM API has been including content Patcher in its download folder so you only have to download SM API however if you do find yourself without content Patcher in that folder you can always download it separately first you'll want to start start with SM API to install that simply unpack the file and have the contents ready to use if for whatever reason you can't unpack slopen this folder you can always download 7zip which is a free program that can open both zip and R files once the SM API folder is unpacked open up your SM API installer folder within it and then click on the appropriate install file depending on if you're going to using Mac Linux or Windows for me I'll click on the Windows one when it opens follow the prompts on the screen you'll want to enter in the number of your choice and then hit enter for the example on screen it has my game path correct so I'll type in one and then hit enter after that type in one to install it or if you need to uninstall it type in two and then hit enter it will then install SM API into your game if you go back into to your game folder now you'll notice that you have a newex exe called stardo modding API you'll want to use that from now on in order to launch your game with your mods installed if you don't most if not all of your mods will not show up in your game it's very important to note however if you want to keep something like achievements on Steam your playtime being tracked on GG or have the Xbox app on PC work properly with mods you might have a few extra steps to follow the stardy wiki has a detailed set of instructions that I will make sure to leave linked below you should also now see that you have a mods folder inside of your game folder if you don't have one simply create one by right clicking inside the game folder select new and then new folder and name it mods great news is the hardest part is over from here you'll want to open up the content Patcher file you downloaded earlier and simply drag and drop the folder that's inside of it into your mods folder and with that you've also just officially installed your first mod most mods will require content patchers so it is the perfect first mod to install however as a note you don't actually Place anything else inside of the content Patcher folder it just stays the way that it is forever now I'd highly suggest installing a mod that's easy to see a proof of it all working as your next mod a great tester one is something like an interface mod as you can see that from pretty much the moment you start to load in I I'm going to be using the overgrown flowery interface mod as mine I'll also link that in the description in case you'd like to use it after it's downloaded open up the download file again and drag and drop the folder inside of it into your mods folder just the same as we did before with content Patcher now load into your game using the smapi exe and you should first see an smapi window pop up and then the game will launch after if you see the interface change on the screen once you have the option for a new game to load a previous game Etc congratulations it all worked and you're ready to mod your game to uninstall any mod from stardy Valley simply delete it from your mods folder if you want to uninstall everything including smapi you'll need to delete all of your mods and then use the SM API program that you use to install it and instead select the uninstall option before I leave you to download all of the amazing mods available for stardy Valley let me walk you through a few important tips first and most commonly asked about is load order load order will matter if you download similar mods and you want to have a very specific order for which they go into the game so for instance one will overwrite the other or take priority over the other the game will actually sort your load order based on the order of the folders that are inside of your mod folder so if you want for instance something to overwrite every other mod that you have you just need to make sure at the bottom of the list the easiest way to do that is to add a z to the start of the mod folder name now that mod should be at the bottom and take priority over all the others secondly While most mods that people use now use content Patcher some are still using the old school method of overwriting game files like we did way back when if you do decide to use one of these mods please back up whatever file it will be overwriting so you can easily go back to the original file if you want to read mod descriptions very very carefully a lot of mods for stard Valley are interconnecting so you'll need a few mods sometimes to go with a mod you want to use for instance you can't use an alternative texture pack if you don't also have alternative textures installed when updating mods usually you can just drag and drop the new file into your mods folder just like how you installed it originally and let it overwrite the files however there are some cases when mod authors will mention specifically that you need to delete the folder and install it from scratch that doesn't hurt your game at all however it might reset your config file so it's something to be aware of and to update SM API you can just simply redo the steps we did to install it originally speaking of config files a lot of mods come with a lot of options that you can customize because of that I would highly highly suggest getting the generic mod config menu as it does allow you to either on the main screen of the game or within your game itself change the configuration of a mod without needing to leave the game or use notepad++ to edit it lastly if you know you'll be playing a lot of stard do Valley and don't want to have to keep going into your game folder to launch the game you can do what I do which is to pin the SM API created exe to your taskbar to do that just rightclick the exe hit pin to taskbar and now it's easily accessible for when ever you'd like to play and I do believe that that covers most if not all of the important modding points for stardew Valley I hope you enjoy your time modding and playing this amazingly cozy game thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time bye
