hello everyone and welcome back Dom here and on this video I'm going to show you two ways that you can create vocal chops in Cubase so you can take a vocal that sounds like this we're sailing two walls that fading light and turn it into something like this so creating vocal chops in Cubase for some people it's like a dark area they don't know exactly if it's possible or not you know they they're not sure where to begin but today I'm going to show you the most fun ways and the most cool ways to create vocal chops because Cubase has got you covered so let's do it so let's dive into it right Cubase has quite a few ways that allows you to create vocal chops and quite frankly they don't need to be just vocal chops these techniques can work with guitars they can work with instruments you know you can have like a synth line and you might want to chop it and do some crazy things with it you can always come up with some really interesting results when you're chopping audio and they're always going to be very different to let's say when you play a synthesizer or when you you know sing a vocal and all these things so let me show you the number one way that I use most of the time when I do chops let's grab a vocal I'm going to grab this beautiful vocal from Roo and I'm going to play it we're saving two walls that fading light okay so that's the vocal so let me show you what I do to create vocal chops super super fast of course you can take the audio and slice it it's also a very cool way to do it but what I do is I go and create a groove agent SC instance and I'm showing your groove agent SC because that's included in Cubase so you can use it straight away all you need to do is literally drag this vocal actually you know what maybe we can just make it a little bit shorter like this and what I do is I go and bounce this so I press command ould be that's my shortcut for bouncing place and I consolidated into a smaller audio smaller portion and what I do is I drag it into groove agent okay step number one now step number two is you go to your groove agent and you go to the slice page okay so now if I don't do anything I'm just playing this audio fading I just hit that cell and I get the entire sample but if I go to the slice page right here I can start creating slices you just hit create slices and boom now you have this slice open now here's the interesting bit and that's why I think this is the best way the most creative way to create slices there are different modes here so you have the transient mode which is great if you have like drum samples and they have defined transients that's great if you want to create chops from drum samples or isolate the kick drum isolate the snare and all these things but in this case what you can do is you can say I want to go grid and now I can change the grid or I can go transient and grid or I can go completely manual so let's go grid and now what I'm going to do is I'm going to change C I'm going to change the BPM value and just like that I have so you can see all the different slices right there and I can immediately go and tweak that we will or I can say I want to have transient in grid we so as you can see here it takes into account both the transients and the grid so it can give you many different results let's go I'll go back to grid or maybe I can go back to transient and change the threshold see there are many ways you can also change the minimum length but I think for vocals most of the times I go for grids and then I can just tweak it like that we wheels now why is groove agent the best - in my opinion to do that because you have control over every single slice so I can go here and I can go to the Edit Page see wheels wheels and now I can say actually that's a good sample but I want to change the sample start and that's for just that sample maybe I want to change the course value so why is that very cool because you don't have to go into like controller lane or all these cryptic things and start painting all these things painstakingly changing the pitch and all these things you can do it straight all that cell in one click you can go like this okay and now if I go to the second sample I'm just triggering these on my keyboard by the way it does have a keyboard here I'm triggering them again if you activate this MIDI follow on off that's a very cool shortcut you click on that and then to these samples are going to change when you hit the corresponding key or the corresponding cell here so let's go to the second row again I don't want this but I want this snappy attack so I can immediately tweak the starting point of the sample let's go to - maybe maybe this I don't like it so much okay that's fake that's good - this one now if this is a little bit quieter I can immediately go and raise it see maybe this one as well you know what I mean it's very very simple and the customization that you can do on your chops is incredible this is completely different to just going to a sample editor chopping the things and then trying to do it with MIDI notes that's not enough this gives you way more options and it's actually the best way that I found to create vocal chops now now let's say what else we can do let's go forward let's go with this vintage actually that's cool okay this let's go for this one this our right why do we add a pitch envelope to this and make it a little bit like glitchy I can go to this one I can go to the pitch envelope and add a little bit of it actually quite a bit of it I will change the envelope amount so that this envelope starts taking effects and now lets you know and that's that effects just that one sample not the entire thing that we did is okay what about this one let's see if we can add some envelope on this you know that's very very cool if I go to my media effects I can even add some media effects on this one so see and that's again Purcell so I could say alright maybe I want to have like rough or maybe I want to have a roll and I can sink that roll let's say I want to have sixteenth notes you know what I mean it's very very fast and you can create some really interesting effects very very quickly and that's effects again you know it's very very cool it's so creative it's so satisfying and I honestly didn't plan any of this this is completely you know on the spot so what else can we do we can of course change the amp intervals we can change the filter envelope for example let's say let's say I want to create a filter envelope on this one I can go and maybe create like um add a filter and added a little bit of a mouth don't forget to use the envelope amount of course and maybe some resonance as well you know this is something I'm constantly talking by the way while I'm doing this so I can show you how it's done but like imagine just by tweaking all these parameters you can get some really really sophisticated vocal chops and of course there are so many things that you can do with the pitch envelope with the amp envelope you can of course have the mixer vent and add effects straight into groove agent SC and start creating some really really cool sounds so this is just a very quick overview but this is a miracle of a plugin indeed it is in Cubase and many people forget about it it's funny but I've seen many people that don't know that groove agent is there and can do all these things now all you need to do is go here and start adding effects open your channel settings and what I would do I would probably just filter this out one plugin that works very very good with vocal chops is the vintage compressor in Cubase and again that's built-in now what's so special about this compressor is very punchy so it allows these attacks of these vocal chops to come through in a very nice way so let me show you I'm going to go all the way to 20 ratio on this compressor just open the attack just a little bit's because you want that punch and I'm going to activate the punch parameter as well this will give me an additional punch now the release I make it very fast so it can have it will recover very quickly so let's see how it sounds now see the attack that it added to the sound let's see without and with it and I will just level match it okay so now check out the attack okay so that's vintage compressor now the next plug-in I like to use on these things is destroyer and is it so let's add some dry and I can mix it in now the next thing that I would add would be the stereo delay we know with my favorite house effect if you know what this is check out the video that I've done on my favorite plugins in Cubase I'll have a link so that you can check it out but basically this will make the sound very very wide maybe I will add a little bit of bye to these vocal chops yeah with the channel EQ then I'm going to add a multi-tap delay alright that's cool you know all these things and then I'm going to add a limiter just bring the levels a little bit more even so this way I bring up those delay lines so I can make a little bit more space and then in the end maybe a touch of Revelation you know so this is I love the multi top delay I'm gonna have to do a video about this so what I'm gonna do now is I'm going to take this groove agent Easton's with all these chops and just improvise over a groove agent loop [Music] [Music] [Applause] you know it's it's so much fun if you start messing with all these sounds and then tweak the different parameters inside groove agent it's an amazing experience I really love doing that I do this not only with vocals but many other things but now what I'm gonna do is I'm going to show you the second way that I use to create vocal chops or create different effects with vocals and that's the sampler track so let's do this now so again what I'm gonna do is I'm going to use the same exact sample and if you've never used the sapper track it's one of the coolest features inside Cubase and it works so well what I like about the sampler track is that it's super easy to use but you can get many many different effects and sounds out of it so I'm going to do the same thing I'm going to grab this vocal and I'm going to open my lower zone like this okay and now what I'm going to do is just drag and drop this sample into the sampler track and now straight away I can play it on my keyboard we're sailing to okay so the sampler track can only have one sample but I'll show you something that's very very interesting let me find a nice way to I like this I like this lasso I'm going to just trim it and go like this now this is important if you want to do cool snappy vocal chops with a sampler track the first thing that I would always do will be to go to my amp envelope see right here and just completely remove the release I don't want this to be like I want it to be okay so that's very very important if you want to have like this really cool snappy staccato and vocal chops so then we can go back and now we can do whatever we want we can change the pitch okay very very simple but I can also go into this section which is very very important and this is the audio warp section in this case what I always do is I go to solo and then I can just change the format okay let's give it some volume you know maybe in this case I'm going to change it a little bit okay and I can even say I want to have like a larger phrase maybe this one in baby and now because we are in audio warp this can be like a three note harmony without different speeds for each note you know and it's very very cool now what I'd like to do is I like to go and add effects to this [Laughter] okay but there's another very cool way to use a sampler truck and what I do is I keep this open you know I have an entire phrase and now what I do is I oughta mate the starting point because you can actually automate the starting point so if I can just play okay so let's say I grab one of these loops and I'm just gonna take two bars and now I'm going to play some notes okay I'm going to record some notes right here and let's record some notes on the supper track this time you know something like that now what I can do is I can automate C I can write automation and automate the sample start so let me show you how this works I'm going to go like this and I'm going to just start moving things around right so let's do this you know something like that and then I can fine-tune it you know I can go like this this gives me a slightly different effect to what we have in groove agent okay this is a little bit more glitchy but you know we have many options here so now I can say I can go and grab my arrange selection too and it's very very easy I can just go and change all these things I can change the sample start and make sure i fine-tuning it exactly where I want now for example if this were these essays were not good enough for me so I can I can immediately change all these things and of course I can keep the sampler track open and see exactly where everything goes I can see what I can do so in a matter of seconds I can come up with a very complex arrangement with chops that sounds like this and of course I can even automate the format as well let's do that it's so much fun so it's so much fun the two ways that I use for vocal chops in Cubase first groove edge and SC super fast super customizable super sophisticated and then for this different type of vocal chops more glitchy these are slightly different but they're both suitable for different music genres you know some of them are more suitable for house music some more for like you know pop music all these things I have loads of fun when I do this and I hope you enjoy these two guys so there you go guys these are my two favorite ways to create vocal chops in Cubase of course Cubase has so many other options if you want to create vocal chops you can go to the sample editor and use hitpoints chop chop chop or you can even say I want to use very audio very or is also very cool tool if you want to create vocal chops change the format and all these things so if you found this vocal chop tips useful consider giving this video a thumbs up subscribe to the channel if you haven't done so already and I'll see you on the next one guys have fun shopping
