hey everyone how's it going so i'm very excited to do this run because i don't know if a lot of you know this the very first challenge run i ever did and this is many many years ago was an all bug run in pokemon fire red and unsurprisingly one of the best pokemon in that run was scyther now generation one is a little different but one thing that is the same is that citra has really good stats in fact it is within the top twenty percent of all pokemon in generation one so that's good but the big difference between scyther and gen three and scyther today is that scyther might in fact have the worst move pool in all of pokemon don't believe me this is the complete list of moves scyther can learn in this game there are 21 of them but two of them repeat so there are 19 different moves only nine of the moves actually do any damage and all nine of those moves are normal type this is going to be really really bad i mean we do get sword stance and agility later on so that's cool but we are stuck with normal moves for this entire run and i know some of you must be confused doesn't scyther get wing attack that is only in yellow version and it's only base 35 power but we're playing in red and blue so no wing attack so having said that it would appear like brock would be a total nightmare and i mean when i battle brock at level 12 it doesn't go super well but it also doesn't go that poorly the reason is scyther still has very good attack and its defense in hp aren't bad either even at level 12 geodude is only doing 4 damage meaning it's a 10 hit ko assuming it doesn't get any critical hits speaking of critical hits scyther has a 1 in 5 chance of getting a critical hit itself which is very useful as geodude likes to spam defense curl unsurprisingly at level 12 i don't even make it to onyx but scyther doesn't need to level up as much as you might think by level 16 the battle is going really well geodude is only doing three damage and you can see scyther is doing well more than one or two before geodude spam defense girl a thousand times quick attack was doing really good damage and thankfully i do get enough critical hits that i have a bunch of hp and it doesn't take too too long to knock out the geodude i should have enough powerpoints for onyx even with a gen 1 miss now with onyx it would be much much easier at level 17 why because when onyx goes for buy i can just go for leer and not only would onyx not be able to do any damage with bide which it does a ton of damage because i get crits at bad times but i would be able to lower its defense and quick attack would do even more damage that said scyther is so darn good that even without leer i actually am able on my second try at this level to defeat brock this only took me 16 minutes of real time and about an hour of in-game time which is outstanding when you consider the fact i'm using a pokemon with just normal moves and while being stuck with normal moves will be bad later in this next part of the game i think scyther is going to do just fine i decide to battle rival 2 before misty i have just quick attack really so i'm gonna go for it and with one crit it's a three at ko against pidgeotto abra is a one ako rattata is a two wikio and obviously i gave the rival charmander but it decides to go for scratch rather than ember and with three quarters of my hp remaining i've won now there is a hiker on the way to bill's house but i just wanted to show you how easy this battle can be if you use leer i decide to use all six even though i don't need to whatsoever and i do get badge boosts every time it uses screech with that quick attack does over half damage if only scyther started with leer brock might have been able to be defeated much much sooner in the end though he wasn't too bad and neither are any of the trainers on this route so let's skip ahead to misty misty leads with staryu i'm still stuck with quick attack and it gets a crit but it's a two wick ko starmie i get a crit it gets a crit if i get a second crit it goes for x defend and thankfully it went for water gun and not bubble beam if it went for bubble beam i don't know if i would have won but i do you might see i don't teach double team and this is just a rule i probably should add it to my list of rules evasion moves are pretty overpowered in a solo run because your pokemon never switches out but furthermore they also contribute to the badge boost glitch so they're even more overpowered in generation one but perhaps the biggest reason is that double team is an easy to acquire tm in the safari zone and most battles would just consist of me using double team to set up badge boosts and then sweeping through the team which would be really boring to watch and from my perspective totally uninteresting so even if it's a level up move we just ban evasion moves and i'm very happy with that lowering accuracy though that's okay because it only affects one of the opponent's pokemon and it doesn't contribute to badge boost either with that said let's skip ahead to rival three we can't learn body slam so we're still stuck with quick attack i use leer because i'm running out of power points and i don't want to heal if i don't have to thankfully i get a crit on raticate so it's a 1ko kadabra is not so it takes two quick attacks but then comes out charmeleon and unfortunately it burns with ember had i not been burned i probably would have won on my first attempt but instead our little win streak is snapped and we need to play again but that's all right this time we're gonna get hit by sand attack so i'm just going to reset right away if pidgeotto uses sand attack it's really not worthwhile so now we're on our third try i'm not going to bother setting up leer thankfully he had a crit it would not have been a two-kill otherwise raticate i don't get a crit so it's a 2ko kadabra uses a potion once again so it's a 2 a ko without attacking me i use a leer on charmeleon and that's going to make it a 2ko it does use ember but with 8 hp remaining we are able to knock it out and we've beaten rival 3 and at this point we can go battle civilian surge however surge might genuinely be tough for scyther considering it is a flying pokemon and i don't have a powerful move to use against him let's see how this goes as always he leads with voltorb i don't have a lot of power points left i did have one ether which i used i'm going to use two leaders and unfortunately get a critical hit so i do less damage than i should have thankfully voltorb misses with screech and were able to knock it out in two hits now i should one shot oh no oh no that's a bad sign guys quick attack thankfully is a priority move so we'll knock out pikachu in the second hit but that could prove really bad against raichu we hit we do like a quarter raichu goes for x speed pretty useless we hit again and there's thunderbolt dewey no wow critical it may have mattered but we lost a surge at this rate they might give him his commission back but we're going to try again so once again i go for lear i go for a second leer this time vulture uses sonic boom which is pretty bad because now i probably won't survive a thunderbolt no matter what and i'm only at 36 hp heading to raichu thankfully i get a crit but yeah it goes for thundershock and nope two losses to surge we got pretty bad luck though maybe with just decent luck we can win so let's go for a couple years against voltorb we got the crit again but we still knock it out hopefully we get a range on pikachu nope we get hit by thunder wave but let's just hope thunderbolt's not a one ako all right here it is nope crit didn't matter we lost to surge and in case you thought it was just three times it wasn't i lost about seven times to admiral serge he hasn't been great throughout the series but in this run he's so powerful i actually need to come back later which wastes quite a bit of time because not only do i have to now go back to vermilion again but serge is the gym leader that allows you to use fly outside of battle so i actually have to walk everywhere until i go and defeat lieutenant serge which isn't great the one i guess positive is that there are many many trainers to fight before surge including the famous hiker with the two geodudes and a graveler now i could use the leer strategy i used against onyx but by level 29 we have access to slash and slash will always critical hit when used by a pokemon with the base speed of scyther in fact pokemon only need a base speed of 65 to guarantee a crit and thus we can two shot all of the geodude graveler's not going to be a two shot but thankfully it is cooperating no self-destruct yet and we are able to knock it out with slash so from this point forward scyther is using a move that effectively has 140 base power which is only a little bit weaker than like when an electric pokemon uses thunderbolt but the major caveat is that thunderbolt in this scenario isn't getting a critical hit if it does it does effectively 300 base power meanwhile we only get the 140 when we count for the critical hit and now we can't use badge boost so definitely a bit of a give and take but i'll take that over quick attack now normally at this point i'd go battle giovanni but erica is going to be a complete joke victory bell is a tooikio it goes for poison powder because i'm a bug pokemon and poison is super effective but that's not going to make much of a difference we knock out each pokemon it seems to be two hits which is fine tangela uses constrict which isn't a problem whatsoever and poison only does 1 16. vileplume i don't even know what it's going to do it goes for petal dance that's double resisted by scyther and we're able to knock out vileplume this was just about as easy as i expected and while we do have to walk back to the pokemon center that is three gym badges now that i've beaten erika i can head to the rocket hideout and hopefully defeat giovanni it might be kind of difficult he leads with onyx i go for slash it's doing about a quarter onyx hits with rock throw it's only a 65 chance it would slash again another rock throw and i'm able to knock it out in just three hits but that's not good now out comes rhyhorn it goes for a horn attack it's going to be a 3ko i use another slash and we just survive on just 9 hp but that means we're likely losing to kangaskhan unless it goes for a guard spec or something i use slash it does about half it goes for rage and oh my goodness that's how bad rage is it didn't even knock out cyther at 9 hp we literally survived on just one health and were able to beat giovanni 1. very lucky that he hit with both those rock throws but still i almost never lose to giovanni one so that's not a good sign going forward and speaking of trainers i almost never lose to we do have to battle lieutenant surge now i could theoretically go back to lavender but i do want to use fly this might not be too bad because i do have slash and i'm at level 33. voltorb is a one ko that means pikachu is going to be a 1ko and raichu might be as well it is all right so i just had to come back a little bit later and now surge was really easy and now we can fly to lavender and go battle rival four who i assume is going to be pretty easy first out is pidgeotto and slash one shots next is execute slash one shots next is gyarados slash one shots all right so we're gonna one shot all five of the pokemon that's pretty good and we also level up to level 35 and can learn swords dance which might not seem too useful but i promise you will be also miss click and go for quick attack but it almost one shots charmeleon and we're able to make it past the rival but now you might think oh no how are we gonna get past the ghost pokemon and there's an answer to that but it's really annoying in later games struggle is a typeless move so i could just use that but it's classified as normal type so we can't use struggle instead we have to rely on bide and bite is pretty luck based it can last between two and three turns and we basically need ghastly not to confuse us and to go for nightshade thankfully after only one nightshade we will one shot every gasly so we basically want two turn by night shade and lick so that's what we need it did take about three or four attempts to defeat the chandler and we don't get perfect luck by any means it's a three turn bite after two night shades and a lick and the second ghastly uses two nightshades but thankfully we have enough hp that we survive at 10 hp and you can see i don't make the mistake i've made before where i don't save and have to redo an annoying part i save immediately i really don't want to do that and this is the hardest channeler because there are two ghost pokemon the others just have one so it's much much easier to win so we don't have to worry about those trainers we can just skip ahead to fuchsia city and we're gonna have to battle koga who is super effective against scyther because poison is super effective against bug now i mentioned swords dance comes in handy i'm gonna go for sword stands coughing goes for its own ex attack i go for double edge and that one shot's coughing we don't one shot muck simply because we get a critical hit muk hits with sludge and you can see how easily we can lose double edge is 100 base power and the recoil damage is pretty terrible but i think we might be able to do this so my second attempt i use swords dance coughing goes for x attack and we knock it out now do we one shot muk with just a single swords dance we don't muck goes for poison gas which isn't amazing but we can work with that however we are only at 50 hp heading to coughing number two slash isn't going to one shot coughing hits with smog's right only 30 hp and double edge while it doesn't knock me out due to recoil it only does about half the wheezing so we're gonna need a bit of a different strategy this time i'm gonna try to set up all three sword stands unfortunately coughing is not cooperating and it's hit me with smog twice i'm not getting poisoned but it's still doing pretty decent damage thankfully it misses with the third smog but after i knock it out with double edge i'm at below half hp heading the muck which is not gonna work i can use double edge wow gen one miss so it hit with poison gas it's not going to matter because as you're about to see even if i try to attack just the coughing with double edge the recoil is going to knock me out and this is where scyther not having a deep move pool really comes to matter so what are we gonna do i go for sword stance and of course coffin goes for sludge so i'm at 67 hp i go for a second sword stance it misses with smog i use double legend at 47 hp against muk i go for slash it counters with poison gas and slash does knock it out in two hits so that's all right against coughing number two i have to go for slash thankfully it goes for x attack so i'm able to knock it out and i can make it to wheezing at 40 hp i'm gonna go for double edge and it doesn't knock it out but it goes for x attack so even after poison damage we're going to win all right that was pretty lucky and annoying actually that was unlucky that should have one shot but man it really really stinks having to rely on a move that deals recoil some of you might be wondering why not just use slash and those of you who've watched the series up to this point already know but in generation one critical hits ignore your stat boosts so that's why sometimes i'll say it did less damage it's because it's not taking into account the sword stance making it weaker which you saw when i attacked the coughing in the muck felt like i should probably explain that in case this is your first video and if so welcome please sub if you can anyway swinging things viewers on the channel will recognize due to a mistake i made years ago at this point and decided to leave in because i thought it was funny instead of saying rival 5 i accidentally said rival fievel which is now his name and one of the toughest battles towards the midway point of the game i don't think we're going to be able to do this without leveling up but let's see he leads with pidgeot i go for slash it's doing well over half it goes for wing attack not bad doing about 23 damage wing attack is only 35 base power we knock out pidgeot next comes out execute i'm a little worried about what it can do but it goes for poison powder after i use slash so that's okay poison we've seen not a big deal next comes out gyarados i go for slash it goes for lear so i'm gonna be at 90 hp heading to alakazam who i think will be one shot by slash and i'm right and i think we won because charizard only has amber so we're gonna go for slash it goes for ember and it does a lot of damage but not nearly enough first try victory against rival fibel not too bad since i'm poisoned though i actually need to go back to the healing spot but that's alright usually at this point we can take a break relax because all we have to do is go and battle giovanni he leads with a nidorino so we can easily set up all three swords dance and it's just going for poison sting i get poisoned i'm gonna go for slash knock it out next i can learn agility but maybe i can delete bide i don't really use it anymore kangaskhan i actually go for agility i meant to go for double edge we knock it out i'm only at 51 hp though and oh we're gonna lose that's not good even if needle queen doesn't attack me i don't have enough health and i didn't save i mean it's not a big deal we can easily beat rival fievel again but losing to giovanni 2 i don't know if i've ever done that before this time i'm not going to make the same mistakes as last i'm just going to go for slash one shot nidorino i don't really need agility so i'm not going to teach it go for slash against kangaskhan to 2ikko ryhorn slash is going to be probably a foreign ko so that's not great and it keeps going for horn attack but i'm at 60 hp for neato queen slash of the two wikio poison sting crits and poisons which sucks but yeah i should have just gone for slash it really does stink if only there was a move that did a lot of damage but that didn't have recoil attached to it looking at the move pool again there really doesn't seem to be a good move so i'm gonna be honest it looks like we're stuck with slash and double edge from here on in thankfully against sabrina we probably don't need anything more than that against cadabra i'm just gonna use slash and it is a one at ko it'll probably wanna kill mr mime it does i don't know if it'll one-shot venomoth it doesn't it goes for poison powder but it misses and i don't think that's a big deal because i'm pretty sure slash will one shot alakazam it does and so that is six gym badges down but the seventh is blaine the fire type gym leader i'm a bug pokemon this is probably gonna go not great against growlithe i decide just to go for slash and it is a one chaos that's one down it worked well last time so let's just go use it against ponyta two down now i doubted a one shot rapidash it doesn't thankfully rapidash misses with firespin so we can just are you kidding me so that's a one in 250 oh okay well rapidash misses two like i was saying that's a one in 256 chance and i believe that's the second one we've gotten this run anyway now out comes our canine slash is doing decent damage unfortunately it's not doing half and blane heals i go for slash again and there's fire blast and yeah one shots all right so that's not gonna work all right let's try this we're gonna set up swords dance unfortunately growlithe goes for ember we can knock it out though with slash that's one down we can knock out ponyta with slash that's two down now we should be able to one shot rapid ash with double edge and we do critical it didn't matter and now we need to one shot our canine we got a critical hit that didn't really matter because we only set up one sword stance it just didn't include badge boosts but yeah that's not gonna work either all right we're gonna need rare candies unless we can manipulate blaine's ai because it does some weird stuff like their retroactive super potion that's what i'm kind of talking about we've knocked out growlithe we've knocked out ponyta we've knocked out rapidash and if blaine goes for super potion we can knock out our canine so that's what i was hoping for we have just enough hp definitely little luck based but i don't know how can i really complain about that it's fire type gym leader we're using a bug pokemon with double edge good enough seven gyms down and it's not like giovanni number three is going to be that easy either but before we battle him i want to answer a question some of you have asked in other runs you probably asked here jros what about hyper beam yes hyper beam in generation 1 is extremely powerful it does miss 10 percent of the time but it's 150 base power no recoil damage and if it knocks out a pokemon you don't need to recharge pretty much every time i have pokemon with bad move pools people ask why don't i just use hyper beam and this is illustrating why i don't do that because it takes too darn long to buy the tm in generation 1 you can only buy coins in increments of 50. and we need 5500 in order to get enough for tm15 hyper beam if you did the math you might realize i don't even have enough coins right now in order to purchase hyper beam so i need to battle a bunch of other trainers and even if i did have the money that is a lot of time spent just pressing the a button in order to get a tm that might not be as helpful as you'd think because if you don't knock it out you have to recharge it can miss it's not a perfect move by any means i just know if i didn't mention it or even try people would keep commenting why i don't do this and this is the answer why hyper beams substitute useful moves but have never really been a consideration for me so now we have to battle giovanni 3 without hyper beam i'm gonna go for sword stance reihorn goes for fury attack it then goes for tail whip and then guard spec i go for double edge it doesn't knock out ryhorn but i am left at a very nice hp and thankfully i'm going to stay there as i knock out ryhorn doug trio is incredibly weak so i'm just gonna go for slash and knock it out that's two down i don't have enough hp to use double edge against nidoqueen so i'm just gonna use slash thankfully giovanni goes for guard spec and that's three down next comes out nito king poison sting i'm at 48 hp 51 actually now that i've leveled up and now the moment of truth i'm gonna use double edge against ride on doing about half it goes for horn drill and now we should knock it out all right we don't but it goes for horn drill which is good and so we have all eight gym badges that last battle wasn't pretty but it got the job done and we've made it to rival six and eventually the elite four now rival six i'm not as worried about because we've had a pretty good time against the rivals it's the elite four i'm worried about but in order to get them we have to beat rival six first so let's go do that just like with rival fievel leads with pidgeot i'm gonna go for slash it goes for wing attack this time it's doing 30 damage so a little bit more we're able to knock it out in two hits now out comes the new edition ryhorn i go for sword stance it goes for horn drill which can't affect me another sword stance stomp and then fury attack misses i go for double edge it leaves me at 65 hp thankfully it goes for horn drill again and we're able to knock it out at 65 hp next comes out execute i know it's going to go for poison powder because a good ai i go for slash it actually misses with poison powder so we're able to knock out execute in two hits we level up that's not a big deal i'm gonna go for double edge against gyarados that leaves me at 30 hp i'm gonna use slash against alakazam and whoa all right i wasn't expecting not to knock out alakazam thankfully it went for reflect but that's not good and i don't actually think we have enough hp to knock out charizard i'm gonna go for double edge it does one shot but i'm also knocked out so we're gonna need to change things a little bit i decided to try one more time just to see if i could get lucky or something because i probably just need to level up a little bit more this time wing attack does 32 damage so that's kind of nice and rihorn keeps going for fury attack which wastes a bunch of time thankfully it misses with the third one and i actually decided to go for slash and because ryhorn keeps going for tail whip and failing i'm actually able to make it to execute at 85 hp which isn't bad at all this time i go for slash and xq misses again with poison powder so i'm able to knock it out i can use double edge to knock out gyarados and i'll have enough hp to knock out charizard now however alakazam can use cyber i was worried about that all right we need to level up a little bit more so we always one shot alakazam or you know what wait a second i have an idea i don't think this is a good idea we can go just south of lavender town and up these stairs this trainer gives you the tm for swift it's only base 60 power but it doesn't do any recoil damage and with three sword stance it might do enough to one shot charizard and gyarados and alakazam it beats having to level up and i mean i never get this tm i think this is the first time in any run actually i believe it's actually the second time i've ever gotten it but the first time we're gonna use it in a major battle so same thing for pidgeot we're gonna use slash wing attack slash all right now against ryhorn i'm gonna go for swords dance there's fury attack there's stomp there's another stomp and i get a crit with swift but the second it doesn't crit so we're at 58 hp but now that we have a move that doesn't deal recoil i'm gonna see it does one shot execute you know what we could sweep i think it'll one shot gyarados well not if it crits but leer works okay so we can knock out gyarados please don't crit all right we knock out alakazam in one hit and now we can use double edge and we could be safe pretty are you kidding me all right well that would have worked perfectly but one in five chance for a crit so we have to try that all over again all right you slash oh now the pidgeot got a crit all right we gotta try that again again all right you know the deal we're gonna go oh i meant to go for slash i went for swords dance i want to see how much swift does it does about half we're at 83 hp but we don't have to set up as much against ryhorn fortunately keeps going for fury attack so we're going to be around 50 hp actually just missed with orandro 63 hp oh there we get a crit against execute but that's not the one i care about we do one shot gyarados that's pretty good we won shot alakazam that's pretty good i'm gonna go for double edge no need to risk it and we knock out charizard i also have a full restore so i don't have to worry about actually let's save i don't have to worry about doing this again we have beaten rival six and now i gotta worry because the first trainer in the elite four is laura lee and she uses ice moves which are super effective against a flying pokemon a fly pokemon with bad special that doesn't have a move that's super effective this is gonna go unbelievably poorly so much so i actually battled some trainers in victory road even before i even try which i never really do but i have a feeling this is gonna go horribly i haven't used my rare candies laura lee leads with dugong i go for slash it's doing about half ish dugong goes for aurora beam and okay that's doing more than half let's see if we knock it out we don't all right so we have to use rare candies at the very least laura lee is gonna heal so i am gonna knock out the dugong but we're not gonna make it past cloister how much damage do we actually do to cloister okay so yeah that's not gonna work i mean did you see how little damage we did to cloister i'm just gonna go get my pokemon battle all the rest of the trainers in victory road then use the rare candies and i think laura lee might be a struggle even after that but let's see well now i'm at level 66 so i'm gonna go for swords dance it goes for aurora beam swift does not one shot dugong aurora beam leaves me at 41 hp i'm gonna go for swift against cloister and it does very good damage but it's going to knock me out so i can't set up against dugong it doesn't look like i do want to try one more thing though i don't know if i have to level up i'm going to set up swords dance and i'm going to set up a second one i want to see if swift will one shot dugong and it does so i'm at 55 hp heading to cloister i go for double edge and we knock out cloister we also survive so that's pretty good next comes out slow bro it can't really do all that much to me so i'm going to go for swift it doesn't knock it out but as i suspected slowbro does an attack so we can knock it out on the second turn and now we have jinx jinx has horrible defense we can knock it out with swift and if we can knock out lapras with swift we're gonna win but i doubt it we don't so that really sucks we're so very close the lapras hit with blizzard it's only a 10 chance to miss i think we can do this but we can try instead of three sword stands see how that's gonna happen so we're gonna set up one aurora beam we'll set up two all right i'm just gonna set up two and see how this goes if i have extra hp dugong has a pretty high chance of using rest turn two so we can knock it out with swift cloister you already know we can knock out with double edge that's two down slowbro is where i would use sword stance but i'm gonna just see how this would work so i'm gonna knock it out with swift we got a that doesn't matter the thing i'm most interested in is whether or not lapras will be one shot by double edge and it is a ton of recoil damage so i need a lot of hp for that but we did beat laura lee we needed a rest from dugong to do so but i don't know not too bad if we level up a little bit more that'll get more consistent so i'm not too too worried you might think i'd be worried about bruno but like i said in the togepi video bruno in red and blue is an absolute joke and all i'm gonna do against the first onyx is set up three swords dance and funny enough i'm just gonna go and try and knock out everything else with swift you know it's hilarious i just got swift to avoid leveling up so i thought it would make rival 6 maybe easier and it's gone from a move i just kind of got to test to a move i'm actually using to defeat the elite four that's that's pretty funny i mean i doubt i'm gonna use it much longer i'm probably going to delete it after this battle in fact i'm going to use double edge against machamp just because why not and this is where i'm going to really get annoyed because we don't have a great move to use against agatha my strategy is simple i'm gonna mimic nightshade and use nightshade if i did my math correctly we should have just enough powerpoints eight of them to knock out all her ghost pokemon but of course by using nightshade there's no chance for when it chaos it's very very luck based and hopefully it's actually a two shot against the first gengar but i don't know if it is all right let's just do this so i'm gonna use mimic mimic nightshade confuse ray i didn't want to see that but i do it with nightshade it hits with nightshade and now do we knock out gengar i don't know what the actual hp number is we don't thankfully he went for confused rain speaking of which i haven't hit myself in confusion yet but i would like this to be a 2k out i'm going to be able to knock it out with nightshade assuming i hit which i do not bat now comes golbat i'm still confused and i hit myself in confusion that's very annoying but it goes for confuser again which is good now i snap out of confusion i go for slash i don't one shot so i might need to level up a little bit more and that's exactly why it goes for confuse ray and now i hit myself in confusion thankfully agatha went for super potion and we actually snap out of confusion and knock out golbat 82 hp means i have two nightshades left assuming i one shot the arbok now out comes haunter this will be a two wiki oh i go for nightshade it goes for hypnosis but misses so that's great we knock out haunter we really need arbok to be a one ako i'm gonna go for slash it is a wanna ko and now out comes the final gengar gonna be a three ko i go for night shade it goes for dream eater that's good i go for night it goes for confuse rain if i donate myself a confusion i win i hit myself in confusion but dream eater i have another opportunity no no we were so close on the first try oh that was so annoying i don't know what to do we should probably level up a little bit more make that a little bit more consistent so i think what i'm gonna do is head to the fighting dojo battle the trainers there and then i can go to the power plant to get the rare candy i usually skip for the record there are 12 rare candies you can get before the elite four i usually collect 10 or 11 because a couple are a little out of the way especially this one but for this run i think it's going to be necessary so now i'm at level 68 when i battle laurely and i'm gonna set up swords dance aurora beam a second swords dance another aurora beam swift knocks out dugong double edge knocks out cloister not sure if it'll knock out slow bro it doesn't cause of a but it doesn't attack three down it knocks out jinx and ooh almost knocks out lapras super potion kind of bailed me out a little bit there so a little bit higher in level would help but that's a little bit more consistent which is exactly what we want to see we don't really have to worry about bruno because rock throw is weak onyx is weak it misses a bunch anyway even if it hits every turn we should have more than enough hp because swift is a two ko so things will be fine actually if it crits it could be a three okay or even more so maybe keep in mind that but all right now we have to focus on agatha and by focus i mean just get lucky there's no other strategy i mean we're gonna delete swift teach mimic and hope for the best i don't know what else can we really do turn one we use mimic we mimic nightshade it puts me to sleep but i wake up and it was perfect timing because it was going to use dream eater now i go for nightshade gengar goes for nightshade moment of truth do i knock out gengar no i'm gonna have to look up what level but thankfully i get the heels so i still don't get attacked and now if we can one shot golbat this will be kinda worth it we do one chalk golbat haunter is going to be a two-wiki-o and it goes for nightshade that means i don't have a lot of wiggle room for the second gengar we do one-shot arbok which we did last time i go for nightshade it goes for dream eater i think we won i go for night again i get the heels i think i win regardless i do just enough and now we're at level 70. so for the first time we've made it to lance we're gonna go and oh what am i gonna do here because i don't have swift anymore that should be fine again swift is only base 60 power i can use double edge and slash this should be fine hopefully that's the last time i have to go beat agatha but you never know all right so out comes gyarados i'm gonna go for slash doesn't quite one shot gyarados goes for hydro bump and misses i'm gonna set up sword stance and it goes for leer and misses and you know what i could get hyper beam i could just mimic it and then we have hyper beam and it's gonna go over hydro bump that's not oh come on all right well that's not great we can knock out gyarados that's one down dragon air we can use are you kidding me are you kidding me i got knocked out by miss hyper beam critical hit slam come on all right and as much as i'd love to tell you that i made it right back to lance and got revenge i didn't i couldn't get past agatha i simply could not get past agatha there was just too many opportunities for gengar to confuse me put me to sleep use nightshade and the first gengar being a 2ko definitely sucked golbat was still a range which also sucked and so after five failed attempts as much as i didn't really want to i decided to level up a little bit more nightshades damage is based on your level and based on my calculations at level 71 the first gengar is a guaranteed two shot so i can just gain a couple levels using the swimmers just north of cinnabar island it is going to waste a little bit of time and you might have noticed i'm at a much lower level that's because i don't save after using rare candies i know this can be an issue and so it's much easier to level up before you use the rare candies then after so i just wait all right so now i'm level 71 and that gives me a little bit more creativity against laura lee every time i use sword stance my special is going up by a little bit so even though dugong keeps lowering my attack i can actually use as many swords dance as i want so i actually end up using four and i'm still at 54 hp and even after swift crits i could still win swift is gonna now one shot cloister it doesn't one shot slow bro but water gun still doesn't knock me out and at seven hp i'm still able to knock out all of laura lee's pokemon so leveling up unsurprisingly makes things more consistent i know shocking revelation there bruno i mean come on you know it's just so sad why didn't they give him primate why didn't they give him polywrath i don't know would it have made much of a difference maybe maybe polywrath uses surf or something still bruno barely does any damage to me and i'm able to knock out all his pokemon and i make it back to agatha you might notice i'm using the pp up on mimic that's gonna help with hyper beam later and it'll help with night in case things go wrong let's hope they don't so i'm gonna go for mimic i'm gonna mimic nightshade dream eater misses nightshade nightshade nightshade done next comes out golbat slash done next comes out haunter nightshade dream eater miss nightshade done slash we're at 158 hp night shade dream eater missed nightshade confused right come on hit my something infusion knight chain no all right oh goodness i thought for sure we were gonna somehow snatch defeat from the jaws of victory but we've made it back to lance it took a really long time i think this should be fine i said that last time but i really think i got really unlucky last time let's go so i'm going to use mimic and i'm going to mimic hyper beam gyarados goes for hyper beam so i can go for swords dance of course i miss with hyper beam but this time hydra pump does not crit i finally hit with hyper beam and i'm at 80 hp now for dragon air alright so last time remember we missed again this time it missed with slam all right we finally hit again man 90 accuracy is like 40 in this run so that's two down all right we actually hit that's three down i don't know if we're gonna one shot aerodactyl we do that's four down and that means we'll for sure one shot dragonite we do so we have made it to the champion for the very first time we can probably mimic a useful move later down the line level 73 should be enough for slash to one shot alakazam i think we got this i think we got this let's go all right well pidgeot is gonna lead we're gonna use slash very close to one shotting which is cool wing attack does next to nothing one down now out comes alakazam we go for slash we one shot all right we should be good so we're gonna set up sword stance against rydon it goes for leer it goes for horn drill which does nothing and it goes for fury attack so i'm gonna go and mimic wait a minute it doesn't know stomp i forgot it doesn't know stomp i wanted stomp at 65 base power swift i have to mimic fury attack that's a horrible move because i've set up sword stance it's the best move and of course i get a crit so it does nothing it goes for fury attacks i'm at 129. i go for fury attack and miss thankfully it misses with tail whip i go for fury attack no crit and it's looking all right five turns all right now right on counters and no way yep back-to-back five-turn fury attacks i'm gonna go for slash i knock it out but i'm only at 56 hp this was horribly misplayed i'm gonna go for fury attack and of course i get a critical hit and are you kidding me it's gonna knock me out with barrage all right i'm at one hb one hp i'm gonna knock out exeggutor but i have to knock out the next two pokemon at one hp all right please just don't get another critical hit and of course hyper beam from gyarados is gonna knock me out all right you know what i have a better idea i have a much better idea i don't have much else to say about these first battles so i can tell you what my new plan is going to be see the mistake i made was not using swift it's so funny i got swift just so i wouldn't have to level up and now it's the linchpin to my whole strategy but the thing is i did pick up the tm for swords dance and silk company just in case i needed some flexibility so against agatha where i don't use it i can teach mimic instead of swords dance and then after agatha i can delete mimic with tm-3 which you might notice i have which is of course swords dance and that way i have swift double edge swords dance and slash somewhat interestingly double edge has proven to be the move i can just never use because the pokemon of such high hp that the recoil damage is just too great i never can count on it this really goes to show how moves like return or in generation 1 body slam are just so useful i mean return is base 100 power body slam is the chance to paralyze they would both be so useful of course they wouldn't help against this next fight agatha is going to be terrible in fact i don't even know why i need the powerpoint ups realistically i actually got them in case i ended up buying hyper beam and hyper beam definitely i mean it would have helped but at the same time we can just seem to never hit with it all right we're going to mimic nightshade it goes for dream eater and misses we go for nightshade it confuses us we need ourselves a confusion dreambitter misses we snap out we knock out one down slash knock it out two down nightshade confuse rey hit myself in confusion once twice thrice thankfully hunter never attacks arbok we knock out in one hit we oh god we're gonna lose wait maybe not maybe not yay we didn't lose all right back to back agatha wins pretty pretty good and now i can re-teach sword stance get rid of mimic so the powerpoint ups really weren't necessary and i think we're gonna be good versus lance we can actually use swift here we don't even have to mimic hyper beams if we don't want to so i'm going to use swords dance hydro bomb misses a second source dance a second hydro bomb miss and then leer we're just gonna use swift and sweep that's one that's two that's three are we gonna knock at aerodactyl yeah we are okay all right so we've knocked out all the pokemon to get right back to the champion and this time we have swift we don't have to mimic fury attack we don't have to forget it doesn't have stomp and we still have double edge in case we have a lot of hp and need a move that we can rely on i think we finally have this come on scyther let's do this all right so i'm going to go for slash and oh god mirror move slash is not what i want to see critical hit same type so we're at way less hp one down next comes out alakazam we're gonna go for slash it can't do anything because we're just too darn powerful two down i'm gonna set up the first swords dance it goes for fury attack that's okay second swords dance horn drill mist that's what i like to see third sword stance tail whips okay it's boosting my attack just a little bit more i go for swift it's doing about half tail whip hits and so we're gonna knock out rydon with another swift now exeggutor i could go for double edge i'm gonna decide to go for swift we knock it out that is four down now out comes gyarados i have more than enough hp i'm just gonna go for double edge we knock it out and now it's all coming down to no critical hit against charizard please just no critical in against charizard yes oh we actually got a critical hit and we won anyway the leveling up really did matter let's go now as happy as i am that this plan came together still not a great great run and in order to show that properly i'm gonna break the tier list up into the pre-evolved forms which we don't really need today and the non-pre-evolved forms which scyther is a part of and compared to those pokemon scyther does not rank super well level 74 ties it for the second highest level needed to defeat this challenge and 6 hours 15 minutes ties it for the second worse and so unsurprisingly that's exactly where scyther is going to find itself i will still put in the bedroll tier if we look at the tier including the pre-evolved pokemon it makes a little bit more sense these are all pokemon that have a little bit of struggle but overall got through the challenge without too many issues and i think that's true of scyther but unfortunately gen 1 just doesn't allow it to maximize its truest potential thank you guys all for watching maybe i'll do pincer next see how that compares but until then see ya
