[Music] so [Music] all right hey block family welcome to black talks this is take eight my name is luke bitter and we have here hi i'm alex tinglehoff i am one of the life group leaders here in our young adult community at celebration church awesome awesome so who's your life group for and where is it at so my life group it's for guys only um it is on tuesdays at 7 00 pm and it is on at airline french press on airline highway awesome thank you so much you're good you're good you're good you're good awesome so uh this past week uh last week we concluded our honor culture series we've been going through the study and last week pastor stephen uh talked about honoring our social leaders as well as honoring our family and so we're going to talk a little bit about that today and so uh first question um just wanted to ask you man um so last week pastor stephen talked about what it meant to be a christ follower at your job or or honoring maybe your employers your teachers and things like that um kind of kind of share with us from your view and your experience how is it being a christ follower like what does it mean to honor your boss as a christ follower and when that has happened in your life how has that blessed you in your life so i think as a christ follower we are called to honor our authority despite our circumstances or situations so with me um i work at ochsner with my supervisor sometimes um the way the way we look to get things done might not be the same like the route we take to get the end product and sometimes there could be some um just some i guess a little bickering or something but i have to remember always um that even in times where the situation may not be favorable i have to honor him and whether that means just keeping my mouth quiet just saying yes sir whatever that looks like um i just always got to remind myself that all authority is of god even though it is not always godly authority so [Music] that's really good i liked how you uh talked about how honoring um you know i think i think with our with our job for sure i know many of us may be watching can can agree sometimes you know we may work with an employer that we may not have the best relationship with or maybe as a college student not having the best relationship with a professor or a teacher or maybe our co-workers and that can um that can kind of have some friction and so um how has that blessed you um and your how does that benefit you at the workplace being able to honor your employer honor your your work mates even though it may not have always been the best maybe work environment in your favor so i think the biggest way that has blessed me is knowing that first of all that i've been able to honor god by honoring him and then second we just really it has blessed me to know that so when we something i think about as well as when we honor our authority it also reflects our christ-likeness and so i think when i um honor him it shows my other co-workers or other people in the hospital what a christ follower should look like and it kind of sets an example for them someone who is a christ follower how they should respect authority and honor them yeah awesome thank you for sharing that um and uh and and one of the topics that we also talked about and this i know this was like a big one i know there's a big one for you um was honoring our family right and this is uh this this is a tough one uh for a lot of people you know uh we live in a generation where um a lot of our friends a lot of our brothers and sisters in christ they have very difficult home lives and so honor our family can be very difficult and so um just from uh just from your experience how has honoring your family uh looked like and um and how would you be how would you encourage someone else who maybe they're in a situation where again it may not be the easiest thing to do time their family how would you encourage them to continue going and continue seeking that heart to have a heart that honors their family what's your thoughts um so my thoughts on that um just a little background so i had an absent father and so honoring him was a difficult process and still is a difficult process and i think the biggest thing in remembering um and remembering to honor him is how it does say in scripture honor your father and mother and how we do honor them we honor jesus and so i think with that there's many times just in my own circumstances where circumstances aren't favorable where i can get frustrated where i don't get the response i want from him or i don't get the affirmation or whether it's approval that i want from him and i think with that situation it can be hard for me to want to honor him but again i remember and kind of i guess kind of remind myself that we are to honor our mother and father our families our parents our social leaders despite the circumstances again so even though the circumstances might not be favorable to us or we may not agree with them or um they might you know just even just not be whatever fun fair whatever um it's just remember to to really just to honor them and and in the end all i know god will continue to bless us as we continue to to honor the people he's put in our lives yeah um so how do you practically um how do you like say when you get to a place where you find it difficult in your own heart to do so how do you um are there certain spiritual disciplines that you do is it a certain prayer that you pray certain scriptures that you go back to what is it for you that how do you go back to that position that posture of heart to where it's like man like i don't want to have these thoughts on all these feelings jesus i want you to make my heart different towards my family towards these uh towards these circumstances what do you do personally like what's that like in your life so um example again going just back with my father um he isn't he isn't saved um and so another example that i also try to think of is as we said the first time was how to represent christ and how i represent christ and so i would say before christ when there were things that weren't favorable for my situation i tend to lash out or argue back or completely just um just be very hostile and i think now as a christ follower um i i think of how i can represent christ when it comes to him so something practical that i do before is when we are texting or something or he says something that hurts me or whatever i tend to take a step back and just think how i can honor him um i usually take a little bit of time before i text back and usually just really try to spend some time with god and kind of reflect on how to appropriate text back that would honor him instead of honoring my flesh yeah yeah yeah i know your flesh has been what you would well my flesh would want me to hit me the things that you'd want to do some people watch like yeah i just meant like going with what my flat like with just the what you'd probably do before yeah that's really good no thank you for sharing that man uh yeah i would even say um practicing um and i know this is difficult i know at times practicing even just the words i love you um i was reading i read this in a book by timothy keller one time he was talking about how you know when we grow to love someone it's not really always based off of emotion sometimes we have to do the actions first and our love for them will follow um like loving someone or honoring someone it's a practice it's not something that we can just feel ourselves into that's why it really does take prayer and that's why it takes action looking at the example of jesus of what he talks about when he talks about honoring the things we studied the last three weeks but also um acting ourselves in that way literally taking action towards that even we don't feel so yeah and praying for the strength to do so um and that's awesome man is there any final thoughts any other perspectives you ever want to share i definitely think oh it's been a this this series that we've been studying with honor culture has definitely been a challenge but i am definitely thankful for it that we were able to go through it i think that if we can just continue to to lay down the difficult circumstances and give him jesus and remember that he has called us to honor him first and foremost and with the people that he's placed in our lives and that through honoring them we're honoring him and i think if we can remember that um despite whatever circumstance goes on with our social leaders our family politicians whatever it might be i think if we can just really just remember that um i think that can really uh help us continue to to honor in different situations yeah awesome no thank you so much alec thank you for coming and thank you for sharing uh before we close out just want to let you know if you have not yet um follow uh you can follow our instagram block nola and thank you so much yeah message series um man i hate that we're concluding this series already after four weeks because i feel like this has been um one of the most on time message series that we've ever done as a ministry but also i know there's so much to unpack when we talk about honor and so today what i'm going to do is we've already talked about four levels we're talking about the last level today which is church leadership but i'm going to add some other stuff in there at the end today to kind of bring some more value into this conversation as we talk about honor culture as we've always said this is so critical for you to understand especially those of you who are are young adults 18 to 30 but especially those of you who are younger than that maybe you're in high school expect i want to encourage you go back and listen to last week if you didn't listen to it when we talked about social leaders and parents very applicable to right now and so today let me go ahead and run through these other levels of leadership that we're called to honor we're going to look at first honoring church leaders pass the scripture first thessalonians chapter 5 verses 12 through 13. here's what it says dear brothers and sisters honor those who are your leaders in the lord's work they work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work and live peacefully with each other now this specific passage of scripture as we see is focused primarily on the roles of those in the church specifically those who are pastors we see here that our attitude towards god is reflected in our attitude towards our church leaders now i shared a story with you week one about how going out to other countries and people would say man why do miracles happen in other countries and i explained to you it was because of the honor and i was just reflecting on that this past week and uh thinking man all these things are popping up on my time feed of this time last year you were in india and always think about the great things that god would do whenever we would leave this country we would go somewhere else with the intention of spreading the gospel but primarily the reason why those things were taking place was because when we were in a situation people would bring honor into that place and sometimes it was it was very uncomfortable the amount of honor that they would bestow upon myself the person who was speaking on our mission team it would be very uncomfortable but i'll tell you what would always happen is god would always show up he would always show up why because when you honor the pastor when you honor the spiritual authority which what you're doing is you're also honoring god and when you honor god he's going to show up and he's going to show out he's going to do incredible things in your life this is here's what i want to tell you a lot of times like well you talk you're a pastor so of course you're going to talk about this listen this isn't for my benefit this isn't for your pastor's benefit this is for your benefit that you understand the honor principle because if you don't understand it only you are the one who isn't going to benefit for him from it it's not going to impact your pastor it's going to impact your life because the honor principle is for you it's for you as an as an individual where in scripture do we see this well i don't know if you know much about the old testament but first samuel great book of the bible in the old testament one encourage read there's a god uh there's a guy in this passage his name is alcanai and he's got two wives he's got his first wife his name phineas and a second wife named hannah you've probably heard of hannah before but basically the situation was this he had two wives and he gave the best to hannah but the bible says that her womb was closed that god had closed her womb so she was unable to bear children and the other wife finneas she would constantly mock hannah she would say man what's wrong with you look look look at the suns that i've been able to bore in these things but but hannah was not able to do so when we read in first samuel chapter one we see that hannah she goes to the tabernacle to pray now what's on her heart is that she has the desire to have a child and she's bringing that desire before god and we read in first samuel chapter one that she is weeping at the temple she's praying she's fasting she's crying out to god because she wants god to do something special in her life specifically to open up her womb so that she could have a child now let's let me read you what it says here it says as she kept on praying to the lord eli who's the priest who would be the context would be the pastor he observed her mouth which she was saying verse 13 hannah was praying in her heart and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard so eli thought she was drunk and look what eli said to her he said how long are you going to stay drunk put away your wine i want you to stop i want you to imagine this happening today 2020. somebody's in church they're they're broken-hearted over their current situation and they are crying out to god they're weeping and they're praising god but no words are coming out but then the pastor goes over to this individual and makes a statement like why are you in church drunk can you imagine the repercussions of that statement in 2020 what would have taken place hannah would have taken her husband and said let's get out of here let's go to another church and she would have posted something on facebook or writing a yelp review i don't know what had happened it wouldn't have been good but what did what does hannah do in this situation because eli the priest has in a way dishonored her has mocked her in her grief crying out for god to do something what does she say look at verse 15 not so much my lord hannah replied i am a woman who is deeply troubled i want you to understand that how she responded to eli was a response to the the authority the spiritual authority that god had placed over her which in her response to god and what did she say she said i'm not drunk why are you tripping she didn't say that she said my lord what does that mean she honored him even when he was dishonoring her she honored him even though he had mocked her and made fun of her in the midst of her of her grief and what does it go on to say he she said i i haven't been drinking wine or beer i was pouring out my soul to the lord uh don't take me for a wicked woman i've been praying here about my great anguish and my grief and look what eli answered he said this go in peace and may the god of israel grant you what you have asked of him so you've got this woman of god who's crying out in her situation you've got a priest who is as if you continue to read he was an evil priest he him and his sons just a horrible situation there but what he does is he ends up blessing her so this guy who mocked her ends up blessing her and if you continue to read you read that a year later the bible says that god opened her womb and she gave birth to a son named samuel god blessed hannah but how did he bless hannah he blessed hannah through the blessing that eli had given her why because of her honor that she had given to eli instead of snapping back at his comment i mean i want you to understand that even god can use an ungodly preach a priest or pastor to carry out his will and to distribute his blessings now let me get you this all pastors are not good pastors i'm sure a lot of us we've sat under some some pastors who um we don't agree with or maybe they've they've made comments similar to this to us or have hurt our feelings um i shared that with you many weeks ago that growing up i had no respect for the authority the spiritual authority over me and let me tell you i'm the only one who suffered from that and i want you to be like me i want you to understand this but i want you to see also in matthew chapter seven incredible pass of scripture um that we always talk about here at the block where he talks about on that day many will come before me and say didn't we not prophesy in your name and cast out demons he'll say i didn't even i didn't even know you who's he talking about he's talking about the minister he's talking about there's gonna be pastors and preachers who stand before him and say no we proclaim your truth we did all these things and he's like no i don't i don't really i don't know who you are and so what what you have to understand it's not about the minister it's not about the pastor it's how you receive the minister it's how you receive the pastor it's how you honor the spiritual authority that god has placed over you one of my favorite passages psalm 92 13 is what it says planted in the house of the lord they shall flourish in the courts of their god planted in the house of the lord you're gonna flourish planted doesn't say if you attend right what is planted planted means to to give to serve to obey the leadership and so let me ask you a question do you value the spiritual authority specifically the role of the pastor that god has placed over you for example do you show up on time for service when when the pastor asks you to do something maybe we have some initiatives here at the block maybe there's some outreach or some food distribution or there's something that we need some help on the ground for do you honor those requests or do you say no i'm just i'm too good for that or i have other things going on because let me tell you something how you honor that role is how you honor god and so i want to ask you are you limiting god's blessings in your life because of your lack of honor towards your pastor when your pastor's preaching or teaching are you texting are you scrolling are you paying attention are you leaning into the word that the god has put on your pastor's heart for you specifically let me tell you something this is a big deal so we've got to learn how to honor the authority that god's placed over us we've got to learn how to honor our civil authority our social leaders our parents and our church leaders but as i conclude this series i want to talk about a couple more areas that might be skimmed over but the bible does talk about these areas and he talks about the area of your peers you can say wait that's not an authority in my life but let's see what the bible says in matthew chapter 10 verse 40. it says he who receives you receives which receive that word means honor me and he who honors me honors him who sent me he who honors a prophet in the name of the prophet shall receive a prophet's reward and he who honors a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward so who is jesus talking about this past scripture he's talking about not just your spiritual authority but now he's starting to talk about your peers he's starting to talk about the peers you're people that you interact with and you may do ministry with you may go to school with and you may have a job within all these different types of things and what we see is that and this is a principle we've talked about that it doesn't matter who we're talking about what area the greatest rewards from heaven come when we honor those who dishonor us right let me say it again the greatest rewards that we're going to get from heaven when we we honor those who dishonor us that's the test that that's the tension in this series that we've been talking about because it's very easy to honor someone you like you agree with you voted for you chose to be under their leadership whatever the case may be but when that individual there's tension there what is your response to that are you gonna see the position are you gonna look past the person and see the position or are you just gonna do whatever you wanna do like if i can say the majority of people in our culture are doing today and say if i don't agree with you if you don't earn my trust if you don't earn my respect then you're not gonna have any let me say that's not godly that's not the fear of god the bible says that the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom so the wisest thing that you can do is understand this honor principle in all these areas but especially to your peers look what it says in romans 12 9 let love be without hypocrisy it says a poor what is evil cling to what is good what is hypocrisy what does that word mean it means the concealing of one's real character of motives romans goes on to say this he says let love be without hypocrisy abort what is evil cling to what is good be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love and honoring giving preference to one another once again he's talking about in these past of scripture your peers and you're called to honor your peers philippians 2 1-3 therefore if this is my consolation in christ if any comfort and love if any fellowship of the spirit if any affection and mercy fulfill my joy by being like-minded having the same love being of one accord of one mind watch this let nothing be done with selfish ambition or conceit but in lowliness of mine let each esteem others better than himself so what does it mean to esteem it means to have a high value for someone it says for your peers you should value your peers higher above yourself and so here's what i want you to do practically with this i want you to think was here's the deal a lot of us we're in situations where our peers have heard us where they've said something bad about us where they've backstabbed us all sorts of different things i want you to think about your peers the people that god surrounded you with you your your fellow classmates your fellow co-workers your people in this ministry people in your life group whatever it may be and i want you i want you to think about specifically any of your peers who've done wrong to you okay and here's what my challenge is i want you to pray for them i want you to pray for them specifically by name and i want you to ask the lord how you can bless them how god's calling you to bless them and i want to encourage you to be sensitive to how the holy spirit is calling you to interact with your peers now he goes on with this passage of scripture and he goes on to talk about it says this word little ones and this is another area of honor i just can't in this in this message series without talking about this because it's so important so when he talks about little ones at the end of that passage of matthew um he's specifically talking about anyone who's under the authority that god has placed over on you meaning that for if you're a life group leader these are the people who are in your life groups if you're a boss these are the people who you oversee um anyone who's under you who you've been given authority over this is who it's referring to it says in matthew 18 6-7 it will be terrible for people who cause one of my little ones my little followers to sin those people would be better off thrown into the deepest part of the ocean than a heavy stone tied around their necks the world is in it for trouble because of the way it causes people to sin there will always be something to cause people to sin but anyone who does this will be in for trouble don't be cruel to any of these little ones i promise you that their angels are always with my father in heaven and these are sobering words god is um he's proclaiming a warning over anyone who has any leadership you've been given any leadership he goes you better be careful that you steward the leadership that i've given you because all authorities from god so any authority you have is from god you steward that well in a way that honors god and doesn't try to lift up yourself and build your castle but instead you're looking to build god's kingdom and to build up the people that god has put under your leadership now one of the greatest examples is this john chapter 13 jesus washing his disciples feet and you probably heard the story a bunch of times but the context of it brings the weight of the passage of scripture to help us to understand what he's talking about i mean think about it when jesus went to a home and we learned from scripture it's a wealthy home and in a wealthy home they would have between 20 and 30 servants in that home but the lowest servant the lowest degree of servant would be responsible for washing the feet of the people who came in this wasn't a time where they were nike where there was uh there was jordans where there was adidas whatever it is that you went away there wasn't any of that going on okay when people would walk on the street they would walk in dirt they would walk in feces because the cows and all these camels they would just have their dumping on the road like like you understand the feet were nasty they were gross right and it was the lowest servant's responsibility to wash the feet of the people who entered into the house now what did jesus do how did jesus show real kingdom leadership when he was on earth specifically in this moment what we see is that jesus he got his disciples together he pulled up his garment got a towel and he washed his disciples feet he didn't say hey you guys look at me listen to my words he said i'm going to show you by my example what it's like to be a real leader and a real leader is someone who honors the people that have been placed under them and honors them so much that they would stoop so low as to serve them in such a way like this of washing their feet it says this in verse 12 through 15 of john 13. after washing their feet he put on his robe and sat and asked do you understand what i'm doing you call me teacher and lord and you're right because that's what i am and since i your lord and teacher have washed your feet you ought to wash each other's feet i have given you an example to follow do as i have done for you and jesus once again he was setting an example of what real leadership looks like it looks like honoring those that you have been placed the authority over i mean this is a game changer this is a game changer it's very rare today that you see any type of leader honoring those that they have been placed over instead what you see is leaders who are requesting and demanding honor from the people that they have been set over now the bible says that that parts aren't there are parts that are not seen in the body of christ and those are the parts that get great honor and great reward and so as a leader it's our responsibility to look at those individuals that god's put us over and to serve them i mean i think that there's two two types of leaders two types of leaders the first type is the life draining leader and the second type is the the life giving leader now what's the difference between these two types of leader well a life draining leader sees people as a vehicle to fulfill their mission they see people as individuals they can use them to fulfill their mission what does a life-giving leader do a life-giving leader sees the vision as the way to enhance the people do you see that there's two different two different perspectives there right what else does a life uh taking a life draining leader do they have this empire mindset they say i'm here to build my castle i'm here to build my kingdom if you will everything revolves around me what does a life enhancing leader do they build people they their position of leadership is a matter of stewardship of people not saying how can i use people but how can i serve the people that god has entrusted to me they see who god has given them that they position them equip them and release them and let me tell you something the greatest joy to a life-giving leader is when they see the people that they have honored that they have raised up they have equipped succeed beyond them let me just tell you i've been in in ministry for many years i've had the opportunity to center different types of authority not just in church leadership but at different types of secular jobs in school and all different things let me tell you something i've been under both of these types of leaders before and i was reflecting before today thinking about where are these people now this life-draining leader that i can think of well they're actually in the same spot that they've always been still trying to drain people's lives but then when i think about the life-giving leaders i've been thinking man god's really taken these individuals lives and he's catapulted them into a greater calling a greater a greater anointing a greater sphere of influence why because they had this kingdom mindset of what it means to be a leader and to honor the people that they have been placed over so here's an action step for you to do is to identify who who god has put under your care and start praying for them and once again think about how you can honor them and be sensitive to doing that now i want to close this out by saying this we've we've been talking about all these different levels and and honestly scripture tells us to honor all people to honor all people because you could say well let me let me check this off i got to honor civil and social and church and peers who's left out well the bible tells us that all people are to receive honor it says in first peter 2 17 honor all people it doesn't get much clearer than that right in first peter 2 17 in the message version it says treat everyone you meet with dignity now what is dignity dignity is the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect can i tell you when you dishonor someone when you don't give someone dignity you are treating jesus like that the same way that you're treating the homeless person that you see on the side of the road the person who comes to life group that you never met or comes into a church service or sits in your class or serves you a meal when you go sit down and you go through the drive through every single individual has value and has worth because we've all been made in the image of christ and god has created god has placed value and worth on every individual's life it says in mark 8 36 for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul what's the value of a human being well god tells us in john 3 16 for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so those people that you just passed by in the grocery store that serve you do you understand that that god sent jesus to die for them he didn't just send jesus to die for people that you love and that you like and that you get along with that you go to church with no no every single person that you and i interact with we're called to honor them why because they bear on them the image of christ and so i want you to think are you honoring of the individuals that you interact with all of them every individual that you interact with on a daily basis here's the prayer that we need to pray we need to say god i want you to help me see people the way that you see them i want you to help me value people the way that you value people and let me make this clear as we we close this out we don't honor to get a reward we honor because everyone is worthy of honor let me say that again we don't honor to get a reward yes it's awesome that blessings flow from this principle we honor because everyone is worthy of honor is what scripture says so here's my my last thought we've said this many weeks ago in week one that honor begins in the heart i think it's really easy for you to hear these principles especially today and and even to do these action steps that i've shared with you and to go into and to make maybe have a check box and say well i've done that i've done that well you're going to get really tired of doing this after a while if it's not who you are if it's not the overflow of your heart the bible says in proverbs 23 7 for as he thinks in his heart so is he as he thinks in his heart so is he so if if the attitude of your heart is not a heart of honor then you're not going to display honor you can try your hardest to do it but we don't want to be people who try to honor here and there we want people where honor flows from our lives consistently for a very for as long as we're alive on this earth that we're honoring everyone that god has placed before us so i just want to ask you um how's your heart tonight how's your heart maybe one of these past weeks has been more simple than others because honestly you don't have an issue with that authority maybe there is a level of authority that we've talked about that you're still having an issue with and for you tonight i want to pray specifically for that i want to pray that god would impact that specific area of your life but for all of us myself included if you're listening to this i just want to pray tonight that we would be the people who have hearts filled with honor that god would take out anything in our lives any any dishonor any bitterness any resentment any hurt from our peers from the people that we oversee from church leaders from parents from social leaders from civil leaders from all areas of authority all individuals that that all those things will be laid today right now in this moment at the foot of the cross and that god would by the power of his holy spirit replace that with a spirit of honor why because when we honor people we're honoring god when we honor authority we're honoring god so we need to pray right now that god would do just that in my in our lives let me pray for you as we close out this important series father i just thank you so much for your word and um i believe that this series this word is a rhema word for this moment god um it's a it's a timely word it's a word that we all all of us need to hear this word god because we we're all dealing with with some sort of conflict in regards to authority in some way in our lives and even if our peers god and the people that we interact with god i pray right now that you would remove any dishonor from our heart father that you remove any hatred any malice any slander any gossip any resentment or bitterness or hurt that those things would be removed in the name of jesus and i want to encourage you as you're listening to this that you would just vocally you would tell god that you're giving god these things in this moment maybe you want to say things by name uh things that have hurt you and say god i want to give this specific bitterness to you this specific hurt to you and father we ask as we if we empty ourselves of ourselves that we would fill ourselves up with more of you god in john 3 30 you said less of you less of us and more of you jesus that's what we want but specifically god we pray that honor would be deposited in our hearts and our lives father so that we could be a great representative of you god of who you are of your kingdom and that we would experience all the blessings and rewards that come
