Home for Hans... From an unheated camper to a home in two weeks! Part 1

adventure is in my blood finding treasures big or small and having fun is what it's all about with my wife Melissa and our three kids life is pretty full but there isn't a mountain we can't climb together this isn't your ordinary antique store my name is Alex Archibald and this is curiosity I had no idea where heads was living I knew he lived in town here but I didn't know that the place he had and Berg down [Music] he hasn't been able to replace it there's charred remnants of something there but he's been living in that little camper there that old high seventies camper for the last couple years no heat no water he's just got the shiniest brightest attitude ever let's see if we can brighten his day [Music] it is just a beautiful November day it is the 16th of November time I film this US Thanksgiving to be coming up pretty soon here and how fitting for how thankful we are for all everything that's basically happened in the past couple weeks I am rolling on up to my store because I'm going to be meeting Hans here very soon we're embarking on an adventure today we're going to a lady's house this morning who's giving Hans a free fridge and after we pick up a fridge and possibly some other furniture from her we're headed off to get his new home moved in I'm gonna help them with moving so I've got the ambulance with me today it's the biggest vehicle I have it's basically like a little moving truck anyway so we're gonna load it up real good and go have a fun day with hands get them all set up I'm gonna have to stop at the shop because we're gonna need two furniture dolly for moving fridges and furniture around I've got one in storage in the garage here I'm gonna grab that and then go say hi to Shawn while I wait you should be in there running the shop today and my aunt Janice is pop by and you've brought over a little gift bag for timing too because I'm on my way right now to go and see him and we're gonna be lifting a refrigerator before long so this ought to be fun well thank you so much for thinking of hands you bet so I'm in my store and I found a couple of bearded charmers in there Hans and Charlie we're off to go pick up a fridge careful of the sidewalks a bit icy here guys so you had your first night in the new place last night well different in the dribbly hopefully yeah that was that was very different staying in the little house and now we're gonna get some furniture and get it all picked there set up and then it'll be a little more comfortable than there was last night but it was good so who knew that when you were cutting down this tree behind you like a couple months ago that you'd be you know doing this video and then you'd be it off having your own place I that I still don't really think that it but I mean obviously it's real because no look what's happening them yeah of course it's real yeah you're saying you got a good home base now for for helping other folks in your area cuz you got a nice roof over your head and good sheds put tools and stuff in lastly there's a single mother she was quoted an outrageous price to put a metal roof on her place I actually told her I did a job she supplies all the materials so you see that's the type of stuff I like to do oh yeah yeah and that's kind of Awesome well that's great well let's let's go take care of you now we're gonna go to lady's house to see about getting the fridge and some other stuff for you so let's go see what she's got in her basement for it sounds good all right and Charlie's brought his truck you're the wheel city all right well we're here and the guys looks like they followed me okay mind you I guess if you can't follow a giant ghost bus your car going down the road what can you follow yeah I better get the dolly out of the back to my car Deana here is camera shy so I'm not going to show us hauling the stuff out of her house but we're gonna get it all packed up in the trucks and the vehicles here before too long very nice or to do bridge is out not only was I able to fill my car completely full with stuff for Hans I got some things for myself I'll show you that in another video there they go off to their place I'm gonna meet them there [Music] I'm on the highway right now headed to the town where Hans lives and I just got a phone call that they had a bit of an accident nothing serious I guess the strap that they had the couch and the bridge held together when it gave way Bridge fell off all that work and they drove in like an hour out of town and this lady was lovely gave us her courage he still needs a bridge I was ahead of them on the highway because I wanted to get there first Tom load so I was a little too far ahead to go back on about 30 minutes ahead of the but they said the guns all loaded up and they're gonna head back it's all the idiots soon I guess we'll see exactly how bad this is but I mean I guess it's better than it was a fridge that fell off and it wasn't a strap that was being used at the time to hold down a tractor in far everything happens for a reason does it suck yes it sucks a whole lot this lady give is a very nice gift and now it's damaged but please no you know if they will go see we I will not give up until we find exclusion to this challenge today we just keep moving forward that's what we do but this is the pile of stuff that I had in the back of my car we had a dining room tables had a four chairs an area rug these are the towels which my aunt bought him brand new there's some coats that were sent to him some cards some sheets picture curtains pillows all sorts of stuff so I'm just waiting for the guys to show up here and then we'll offload and get his house also [Music] so the result of a broken strap the fridge has seen its last hurrah I mean maybe it's not the worst thing we get him new fridge anyway but it's just kind of sad that we had to set aside and it didn't make it but that's life we'll make sure we take care of him though folks well we'll find him another fridge and table and stuff well Hans is a little bit bummed out that the he had a couch and a little coffee table and a fridge that all fell out of the back all because one buckle on one of the tie-downs broke loose and everything just kind of I think was a domino effect things fell one after the other but we're gonna like I said we're gonna press forward we're gonna go to Home Hardware here right away and do a little shopping with him so hopefully the rest is video will be a little bit more upbeat than the minor tragedy which we just do fella but I'm gonna go inside and help him get to that thing's cozy and set up indoors moving day [Music] you've got some artwork against this first and possibly last operation oh yeah boy you got it okay yeah I have to probably put the legs around the corner okay all right here we go people have been sending him money too while they've been sending checks and I cashed them so I got a big sack of cash for him to that auto brighten his day a little bit after that whole incident on the highway there you helped out with so much yeah the Nova is one of our youtube viewers who lives in the area and she has helped out quit it's a fantastic woman yes and you're making things look all nice and homey here getting the tea towel set up on the stove making home do you want me to unravel this this carpet here and set it up on the living room do that okay [Music] okay somebody's Neverland yeah it looks like from the UK and I do is for you because it says beds care of me and so here it is with him you want to crack that open and see what they say yeah look they sent me a frog it says new pad cuz you got a new house oh you money yeah what's even more impressive is that these guys are from there from the UK I enclosed a couple of dollars to purchase some edible treats maybe a Christmas pudding but that means they had to go somewhere to find Canadian money in England to send to you so you can spend it that was really really thoughtful that's very impressed yeah that's cool and you've got another one there too I don't know I somebody said they were sending you a sweater and it felt like it was cloth to it something well they sent you a nice sweater from the looks of things Abigail Edwards does any dealt where you live where this Viking lives we're not a Denmark anymore looks about right looks about the right size to me I just will find out real quick here now your walking billboard for Canada that's a perfect fit you know who they sent a perfect fit for a Viking yeah but now you look like Viking that gives this time that's all right now look looks perfect and that is a Scandinavian I think a Danish military jacket there you go you got you want to be out in style with your long military jacket there now you look like a World War one picture other than the fact we're standing in your kitchen yeah but the guys weren't often at the front line standing in the kitchen very much I guess since you're an arborist or lumberjack the sheets that they sent you have Christmas trees and here yeah it's very very wintery looking maybe Santa Claus I know I know here yet well I think to this community if you have been Santa Claus for a long time yeah but that'll be something that we tackle in spring I mean you know how to do that oh yeah but putting drywall and I'll be fixing not finishing off the mutton and tape but that's behind you and stuff but it's all just fine so here you are you got a big fluffy couch over there and you thought you weren't used to it so we got to get you off the floor I'm giving me a hard time about this it will honestly head it'll take you probably a good couple months to get used to this and I think when I was talking to Adam and he ended up having a place to stay in a bed and stuff again it took him about six months before you felt kind of normal so don't feel like you got arrested I'll never be normal well that's good we like you just the way you are so but it had to have a nice waking up this morning having a hot shower waiting for you oh that was very nice so what were you doing before you just have to go find a friend's place or something yeah no I got people on the other side found then we'll see he always had a shower downstairs for me that I could go use and we are all gonna get packed up and loaded into Charlie's truck so nobody is coming with us but you gonna tie her down better than you tie fridge down though because we don't wanna know we are pulling into Home Hardware home of the handyman Oh which you are hands home of the Handy hands we're gonna go on a hand shopping spree like we should do this game show style and give you five minutes in the shopping cart it's gonna be fun though so I have a gentleman was very kind enough to give us $2,000 if you believe that so we were gonna go on a hand shopping spree and he doesn't want his name known I was there and everything cuz he's just a very nice guy but I promised him I bring you here and here we are let's go shopping might need another cart he said you got your list of the stuff you need I could dabs all over the floor with it because it's got flowers on it pretend it's my girlfriend so vacuum they start getting around a couple hundred or so I don't really need anything overly expensive you think that would do the trick okay to an indecisive gentleman over there there's a there's a toaster there that's a hundred dollar toaster maybe there's other toasters I dunno maybe I'm cheap I mean I know you have a gift card but I would normally spend a hundred bucks on the toaster I mean I like bread and all I just don't like my bread hundred dollars toasty okay I think I found a look here we go thirty dollars toaster that's that's me that's more like it I don't know I mean Who am I I'm not shopping you pick whichever one you want you want a hundred dollar toaster you go get yourself a hundred dollar toaster but there's some other options here - you got a toaster this really does feel like a gameshow crock-pot just planning on doing some dishes later well a good idea we notice down this aisle over here there is some flatware and dinnerware and stuff I know you'd find one sooner label yeah I like that you're finding your stuff to match all hands continues to do some shopping over in the housewares area I'm wandering over to talk to the customer service folks because we're need of a fridge and by chance they happen to be able to order fridges in so we're gonna talk to them and see if maybe we can get one order it in for it just looking at the different types of fridges you can get one that's less expensive but it's tiny fella this little bit bigger and really not that much more money so that might we're thinking that might be the one hey I think this one here is the one night report okay he is very fussy Hans is making sure that everything matches and everything looks good he is you know you're doing it right better with the blood with the towels there you go that's right now you needed a runner or a carpet or something I think - yeah a couple rubber mats for door well there's some right there one for the wet stuff and then there's all these other ones here was it say paper towel Oh Lord this is hard you can use this on your shower as well you'd like being put on the shower and then you don't get the yellow in it oh and Honda's decided to go with the lavender pine saw because it's relaxing right that is correct and he already smells like trees anyway so don't eat the pines not what I should even maybe donate pick up some screws to put down that for the single mother that would really maybe told my true self you need screws or tools or whatever this is the place to do it I'm just stepping away letting Hans do his shopping it's kind of like I remember when I first moved out on my own I mean he's lost everything and you you can't remember the things he need and I remember when I first moved out I got a can of soup and I didn't have a can opener so I couldn't have the soup in fact I think I found it open with the screwdriver so we're just kind of doing the aisle walk and making sure that there's things like that the can openers and shovel and a broom and mop like things that you you know when you have a house that you need to kind of need so there are the next aisle over there getting along just fine so I'm gonna go check on them and see if there's anything else for missing but we're just about done shopping I think for the day it's been really really productive I think I see something that he should really get that smoke alarms and those might come in handy too don't want to have a repeat of what happened last at all this is true well we'll get those handles we've been shopping so long I got dark I'm not used to spending like this usually just go to get what I need I'm end up in the know well you just didn't realize every day for myself so that's hard or even yet does it feel like Christmas uh definitely yeah I've learned Christmas yeah well you know you're gonna have to get used to that feeling for a bit then though I definitely can see that I mean Oh charlie so I guess to this fellow that that gave you this wonderful gift card any any words you got to say to this fellow I just want to say oh my god I have never I am totally sure I would never I I would never expect that much in one day ever and I just appreciate how much these kind of people are doing and there was like a like Christmas Christmas in November like a spoiled kid man you're not a spoiled kid it's overdue this is making up for all the missed Christmases and miss hands presents from all the years going by you just got all one go here today this has been a truly remarkable month for Hans from a modest GoFundMe to get him heat for winter to a fully furnished home it is a reminder of the good in decency of people all around the world to come together as a community to change a man's life Hans now has a place to eat a place to shower and a place to live this adventure started small and I had no idea it would lead us here but I'm so happy that it did and good for you Hans enjoy your new home [Music]
