welcome back to the wizard shop and you guys have probably been seeing this really sweet volvo in the background today we're going to do a video on this really nice 240 wagon let's get started so this is a 1993 volvo 240 or i guess you call it 245 wagon and it's in here for a lot of little cosmetic things dust shields and a few little items it's nothing really major but before we get diving into this too deep we definitely need the bug ninja here for a volvo hey david yeah ask for the bug ninja and he appears i have beer yeah this is a treat a treat huh yes yes it is a beautiful car yeah yeah this is 93 right 93 so this would be the last year for the 240. and most of the 240s that i've seen in this year were usually blue green so it's a real treat to see one in bright red volvo didn't paint many cars in this body style anyway in bright red and bright red yeah the guy really likes this or he just got it not too long ago and he's finishing up going through a few other things and getting it tidied up we'll go through it all here in a minute but let's take a look under the hood let's do it this is a i think it's a 2.3 liter 2.3 liter naturally aspirated 114 um fiery horses yeah horsepower that's not a lot but look at all the room around you could work on this thing so easily yeah i think this is the reason why um the 240 is is really a great sleeper for the enthusiast if you wanted to put in a toyota 2j twin turbo inline six or uh what's popular is the ls you know oh yeah inside of here then you can do it there's a lot of room yeah there is you can see a radiator would be a very very easy job on here belts a timing belt would be easy if you had exhaust manifold issues it's just right there easy to get to you mentioned timing belt this is a non-interference motor with with volvo if i recall correctly okay so if the timing belt snaps you just stranded for a little bit hm well that's that's good to know so if it happens it's not like oh no it's going to have to be an engine rebuild it's just get it time back up put the timing belt on and be done right this one's in fairly good shape even a lot of the reservoirs aren't yellowed and cracked and right they're still nice and bright colored this one's beautiful you can tell that the owner really really cares about this car one thing that i've noticed it says 240 on the back on the tailgate but right here on this data plate it says 245 right so what's up with that the 240 uh you either got it in the 242 244 245 245 meant that it was a wagon okay it has five doors five doors okay right and you had the sedan with the four-door 244 or they made the coupes which is 242. 242 244 245 okay it's all in the 240 series exactly okay and this one being a 93 it looks like it came from the factory with r134 yeah the other ones had to have have it retrofitted inside the service department that's at least my history with the car that's oem coming from the factory 93 with 134 that's pretty cool so let's take a look around this thing bug ninja let's do it that's glass yeah real glass yeah you don't see that uh very often a lot of cars now with the composite um headlight covers you can see that the guy named it gustav yeah that's the popular name for volvo's popular name we have a friend that named his volvo yeah i sold him that car there's some weird emblems going on this looks like a porsche emblem but it's got a moose right it's a volvo owner humor okay the prancing moose on the side i like it i had a set on the wagon that i had at one time when i had a v60 yeah and then if we go over to here on this side we can see the wheels are off and we're going to show you guys why in a minute then it looks like it has a ferrari shield on it right again the printing moves but the printing mousse yeah that's kind of odd i seen the guy unloading the trailer and i've seen the the shields i was like what in the world right anyways you know what's funny though is that in sweden they actually have a lot of trouble with which kind of related to the moose with reindeer right and they actually are very concerned about the reindeer going over the hood and into the car through the windshield exactly right cut the legs off the got poor guys yep and we go down here there's no dents there's no rust no it's just a beautiful outfit it's in really really good shape the glass is all in good shape not cracked what are what are these here what's going on here um honestly i'm going to tell you for the first time i don't know i think that they just kind of uh vent from the inside out like body ventilation yeah or cabin ventilation yeah you can see this missing a piece of trim here that's like a chrome ring or something that would have went there right i think he has it but that's about the only thing that i can really spot on the car that you know that kind of stands out other than that right you just really don't see them in this kind of shape much anymore no no dance or anything banged up back here as we come down this side the same story is is this stock this black color here do you know or let me stock it looks like it's got a little bit of crazing or cracking on it but it's not too bad but it's in wonderful shape very very nice i do see a gouge here that's been painted over with touch-up paint but it's not horrible wow this is like a total flashback for me i used to drive one of these this is what i learned to drive in when i was a teenager oh yeah and you have a lot of memories with your mom in it huh oh yeah i mean slight difference ours was just a little bit older and it was beige with the brown interior but everything's laid out the same looks the same it's crazy i really like the interiors on these i think they look really cool as you can see it has 136 000 miles on it that's not very much for being a 93 well preserved car it's almost like a time capsule it is in very good shape this one happens to be the automatic it has the aw70 transmission it came in where the overdrive wasn't working and we found that a solenoid has a wire that goes to it the wire was broken we got it fixed and it works look at the condition of the seeds the seeds look like their showroom yeah the fuzz is still firm on it not rubbed through the headliner is really nice now remember what i was saying on the 850 wagon video we're talking about the head rest that are stationary yes this is kind of where where that started these headrests don't adjust at all and it's for whiplash protection so volvo was already thinking about that okay 30 years ago oh yeah the iconic three-step ladder headrest there's lots of boxes and things for parts that the customer brought so kind of apologize for all the boxes but what would be adrian that that cage looking thing that's on the ceiling back there okay so that flips down um behind the back seat so that way it's you know just like you mentioned it's a cage yeah that way if you have anything you know large or heavy in the back seat and you get into an accident it doesn't come flying up to hit you in the back of the head oh okay so it's a safety cage very nice yeah it's very very nice in this interior let's get this car raised up and talk about some of the other things we've been doing to this car [Music] so you guys saw this lift that we're using this is a bin pack mid-rise lift that i have right now we're getting like i mentioned the four post lifts assembled they're getting assembled in the back back there then we'll move them to where we need to put them my other lifts are tied up the two post spin pack lifts that i have and this really came in handy to get this job done it's a lifesaver that's what i use this one for is when we've got to get a job done and we're out of lifts this one totally totally helped us out here so if this one comes up missing i don't know what happened oh you want one of these at your house huh yeah it's definitely very nice so this car came in here with these dust shields that were pretty much rusting away one of them was so bad it just crumbled when we took it off the customer wanted all these replaced and he figured it would be a fairly simple job and up front it really isn't too bad you just take take the hub off here to take the caliper the rotor and then the hub off right and you can unbolt the dust shield it's got a nice good used one on it that really wasn't a problem it went pretty quick but let's head back to the rear axle so you can see it has a good used dust shield on it now we've reassembled everything this was the old one that was there it was rusting away pretty bad and you would think just like the customer thought in the situation 30 minutes you have these slapped on and you'll be done when we took the wheel off and we saw these parking shoes they're just the pieces just literally crumbled the rust is so bad on these that it just fell apart well we obviously can't put this back together like it is but once we got the parking shoes off you see the bolts here you're not going to just take dust shield off in 20 minutes you got to take all these bolts off and pull the entire axle assembly with the bearing all the way out basically it's all the labor that you would expect to do wheel bearings on here just to throw some dust shields on real fast we did contact the customer and was like it's two or three hundred dollars just to do all four of these he was like that's a lot higher than i thought it would be but i understand the guy is a really nice guy he was like go go ahead go for it so got this all back together it's got new dust shields on it we've got new parking brakes on order and this is one of those scenarios too that i run into this guy is really wonderful to deal with but i get into these scenarios sometimes with customers where you take it apart and you find this and the customer's like i didn't budget for that you're like well what do you what am i supposed to do with this i can't are we going to put it back like that and the customer says well no but i also don't want to pay the extra money and this is a predicament i run into a lot it's really frustrating i want to fix this for the customer but you guys know my motto you're not paying i'm not working the only option is i put this back on with the pad material missing or you pay to put new ones on and this guy was totally cool but i've run into this situation several times it's like why is this an argument why would this be an argument adrian it shouldn't be it shouldn't be but doesn't this say in your opinion doesn't they say something really cool about the customer yeah i mean most people with a dust shield sitting behind a tire and behind the brakes and everything like that they wouldn't even mess with it at all right right and he wanted to make the car that much better you know with with items that you can't even see right he wants everything to be right and i really applaud him for that right we'll go over to the other side so you can see on this side we also have the new dust shield installed we're just like i said awaiting the brake shoes to arrive but there is some rust like on this arm here it's surface rust it's not really that bad it's not worth tearing the car apart for but you can tell that this car has been through some areas that had some salt maybe a little bit and the customer's addressing that issue and we're taking care of it for him one thing i noticed bug ninjas actually got a block heater on it right it's a popular accessory for uh for our customers further up north right but you know even in kansas we get we get enough cold sometimes to where people want to want to have that you know attached to their block yeah that's pretty cool so when you started at volvo it was just a few years after this model would have been out probably what four or five years yeah i started with volvo in 97 so i was at the end of the 850 okay and right in going right into the uh into the s70 v70s but these cars were all over the place right i mean the 240 is is really it's it's where volvo built its reputation right um so you know mrs wizard was talking about how she drove one of these cars uh to start with you know a lot of a lot of teenagers were driving the old tank right because you just couldn't really hurt this car yeah you know um a couple of fun facts about uh about these vehicles 1976 this uh the 240 series set the standard for safety in the united states wow um and also this would have been the first production vehicle with a catalytic converter okay and lambda synth are you familiar with that term lambda lambda that means oxygen sensors oxygen sensors absolutely right so these are the first vehicles with oxygen sensors and catalytic converters setting the standard for for cars on emissions going forward okay so during your time when you first started into sales with volvo you would have seen these at trade-ins or trade-ins in the service department right yeah um you know i sold several of these 240s one of the things that we would do to to show how robust the car was because we would roll down the window and we would sit on you know in the window channel here and just kind of bounce up and down a little bit step back and just kind of barely push the door and it will shut you know perfectly to show just how sturdy even the door hinges right i'm not saying that other cars couldn't do that but i wouldn't i wouldn't try it on most cars these days i know one thing if you flip through pages of our family's photo albums back when she was younger there's so many of these there's what is there an orange one we had an orange sedan four-door then we moved to a two-door probably 240 dl right that was maroon and then we moved up to the beige uh 240s wagon and then after i left the house mom got a 940 940 yeah yeah unfortunately um that was her last car because as much as you talk about safety with volvo she was in a car accident and that's what she died in oh man yeah the the kind of accident that was there would have been it wouldn't matter what car you were in it was it was it was a very sad deal right but it was really cool to flip through the photo album and see these cars and it's because her uncle at the time an uncle owned actually a european auto repair here in newton and he worked on tons of old volvos would be 1970s 80s like the p-1800s he worked on a lot of those wow that's a name you don't hear when they had a family mechanic that worked on those is kind of they kind of got drawn to the volvos and they're like well he can work on them so i'll buy one and right there was several of those in her family so that's kind of the story of volvo and mrs wizard's family now this one i see a lot of these on the road they're banged up the paint's faded or all rusted out but this one's really nice and when it came in i knew i had to get your take on it it's it's a really nice car i love these cars our friend we talked about that named his waffle gustav is still pestering me about buying this one he's up he's up to ten thousand he's like come on ten thousand good luck i doubt that this customer is gonna get let go of this car no no i don't think so and if i will see him i probably wouldn't either it's definitely a keeper especially the conditions it's in so thanks for coming out and giving us your take on this i almost called you out on a volkswagen golf r 2017 that was in here but jared from wrench every day happened to be just in the shop so i got his take on it but i almost called you on that one too because i know you're into volkswagen yeah absolutely i definitely had to get you out on this volvo here this 240 wagon this is really sweet so thanks for coming out again thank you this is a
