when I said about buying a Swedish car which is something that I haven't done in my youtube folly so far the legendary turbo brick with the stick was on the top of my wish list I figured it wouldn't be that hard to find a manual transmission Volvo station wagon with a snail resting under the hood but I came to discover that finding one of these was nearly impossible and when I did eventually find this 1987 Volvo 760 turbo I felt like that I had bought something that belonged on the same endangered species list as white elephants Bengal tigers and rhinos which really surprised me because this Volvo is considered by many to be one of the greatest cars of all time thankfully I was able to find my Rhino right here using a site called Auto Tempest which is also generously sponsoring today's video their site consolidates the search process across several car websites allowing you to hit one search button on Auto Tempest and see listing from sites like cars calm TrueCar and others Plus compared with all of Craigslist and Facebook marketplace the Volvo I found on Auto tempest was listed on eBay what I like about Auto Tempest is it really lets your searches get very specific with their advanced tool bar such as only one thing a Volvo wagon with a manual transmission but it casts a wide net across several websites before I discovered Auto Tempest cybersports put in the same search parameters over and over again on different sites so if you're searching for something very specific auto Tempest will save you a lot of time it's also very easy you can get started searching for free and support me and my generous sponsor by trying out Auto tipis link in the description below now let's start the tour of my endangered turbo brick now I'm gonna freely admit that I don't next to nothing about these old Volvo's really nothing other than being a tad admire from afar back when these wagons were plentiful and cheap and several makes styles I sort of gravitated towards the Mercedes diesels I owned several of them but if you look at the trends lately those wagons have skyrocketed in price too absurd levels two hundred thousand mile clean station wagons are now 20 grand which is absolutely ridiculous and Volvo's are starting to come up to a certain degree and getting very difficult to find so I figured well why not try one well I can but I'm still very confused by Volvo's because of the way they name their cars back in the day so this is the 760 which was supposed to be the replacement of the Volvo 200 series the Volvo 240 but back in the day when something was a two-door they would call it the Volvo 242 or a 5-door wagon like this at 245 but then they did away with all of that and they were just too 40s or 7 60s but then this number turned into the trim level so they started making 7 40s for some reason and this was supposed to replace the 240 but the 240 was so popular it ended up outliving the 760 and then this 760 was replaced by the 9 series the 900 series and then that was replaced by the S 70 maybe I'm missing a method to this Swedish madness because these numbers back here make zero sense to me at all and then there used to be trim levels the dl 4 deluxe and the GL 4 grand luxe and the Grand Lux executive G le and then eventually they just started putting turbo badges on the back turbo intercooler there's no trim level on this Volvo even though it probably is a jelly or something so because of these confusing names it totally makes sense why these Volvo's would start getting nicknames and the turbo brick is a very apt name for this thing since it has a giant turbo badge on the back and it is shaped like a brick now originally I wanted a 240 wagon with a stick but those are pretty lackluster in performance so when I came across this turbo wagon I was super excited because this thing packed a lot of performance for the time now the key to my last statement is for the time because this little 2.3 four-cylinder with the turbo strapped to the side of it only had about a hundred and eighty horsepower and propelled this giant brick to 60 in about seven or eight seconds really not bad for the time but also this is one of the greatest engines of all time the 2.3 four-cylinder spans decades of Waldo's history and it is super durable and as you can see really simple there is not a lot going on down here the turbo is clearly visible and all the accessories look like you can bolt them off in a few minutes including the AC compressor which is completely disconnected from the car but I've never been a guy that really cares about facts and figures for performance more about how the car feels and this car feels faster and more fun than Volvo's of the modern era just because of this turbo and the power going to the right wheels so this car feels very fun but also unfortunately it feels very sick so I put this fine example of Swedish excellence for only $4,000 which makes it the cheapest Volvo 760 turbo with this dick for sale in the USA but also the only Volvo 760 turbo with a stick for sale in the USA so I have no idea if that was a good dealer dots and there's certainly plenty of issues cosmetically it's pretty obvious as you saw earlier the paint is pretty faded but it has a kind of cool patina look but the body is very rust free and nice otherwise the interior is also really nice and good shape and comfortable so they have that going for it and the drivetrain the clutch the engine feels fine the big issue is when I try and use the turbo give us some power you're hearing it now they really give it some oomph now turbo kicks in but also this well screamin kicks in a belt sweet or something I don't know but when the bells not squeaking it is very quiet which kind of surprised me given the shape of the car but unfortunately the ride is not very good because the shocks are quite long all right let's get on the highway the seller told me about the blown shocks and the old tires and the cosmetic issues but he didn't tell me about this screaming person but it feels good the turbo feels like one of those old-school eighties turbos that spools up and just hits really hard and this collection transmission setup is actually pretty good it is fun and while it is a four-speed manual transmission it also has an overdrive right now we're going 65 it's creamy at 3500 rpm but I push this red button on the shifter and it pops down to a fifth gear very nice so this Volvo does need a lot of work but I can see the potential I can see how this could be a great car how much it's gonna cost to be a great car I don't know we're gonna find that out at the Weezer's Ouiser did you bring me today well like Han Solo said about the Millennium Falcon it may not look like much but she's got it where it counts yes 1987 Volvo 760 turbo turbo brick yeah stick your head in there turbo brick with a stick oh wow the holy grail that's rare yes the paint's not strong on this thing obviously in the hoods a little mismatch but look at the interior super nice very comfortable it really is for an age and it's hard to believe that today's luxury car is just filled with technology but this is a proper luxury car but it's still totally minimalist look at this automatic line control the label for it takes up more room and the actual climate control itself that's it very few options but it's still a luxury car this is just a nice quality vehicle and that's what luxury used to mean you know it's actually pretty good right in the highway it seemed pretty smooth and quiet didn't seem like it was buffeting that badly Wow it does have issues oh there's a horrible noise when I get on the throttle and get in the boost in the turbo a horrible squeal the suspensions seems blown the shocks the AC compressor will just pop the hood yeah the AC compressor uh no belts on that bad boy it's not locked up surprisingly and I imagine these zip ties aren't Volvo factory they don't do that what's that good question I don't know what these wires get I have no idea amazingly it looks very simple and easy to work on well I'll get his cool intercooler setup yeah I guess it wasn't paying attention but it goes all the way across here back into the intake and then the radiators behind it yeah well let's get it on the lift and see what we find underneath I'm looking for some dollars here boy as noticing is this going up on the air this tired 9 years old and look at the cracks and it might need some tires but let's find some leaks wizard a little seepage they're coming from your oil filter adapter right there oh oh these will cooler lungs are really dripping pretty good - that's it right there there's some gear oil mm-hmm like this field plug and drain plug is leaking that's what all this is and this is a little gasket back here okay it really just looks like Legos it looks so easy it's like DUPLO duplo's exactly I'm in all of the simplicity hooked oil change as well cuz look at this drain plug with this red oil pan because if they couldn't make it any more obvious it does look like a pumpkin ah that's like plumbers crack filler yeah this is a rust free wagon according to the eBay seller rust rust full right yeah nice hole there are you poking at carpet yep oh great we poked a bigger hole yeah all right well I guess that wouldn't be too hard to patch I hope not no okay well that's it that's a pretty flat easy piece to cut away and find an old stop sign and weld it on the rear seam okay is the front that really seems to be harsh let's see if they're leaking yeah those have not been the rears look this one has a little bit of seepage it's wet around that nut up there and the AC belts off so is the compressor bad probably who knows it spins freely spins okay there's no way there's anything on here this labor-intensive the barbs are gonna be the big question though the parts yes wizzy be shoppin whizzy be shopping for mattresses that's it's a Swedish tempur-pedic boss Swedish I see the tie-in now that's a pretty reasonable thing to shop for except this one's $7000 for a Swedish sleeping system well it's time for me to get a new bed and I figured after repairing this Volvo $7000 it better not be $7,000 we xored this is a cheap car this is not some Lamborghini or something where we have a large budget so keep that in mind it's a Swedish gym this gym needs a lot of polishing yes yes for sure people can't polish a turd make it look pretty good well hopefully this one isn't it's hurt I don't think it's a turd okay yeah okay for your French stress that's off to a strong start therefore struts shouldn't be that hard to chew it really pays five hours just to do de-stress the oil coolant lines and your will filter and after I can fix all that for 75 bucks my big oil leaks that's more like it $75 yeah what's under 100 keep going reseal the transmission drain and fill clubs and that little gasket that you saw for a hundred bucks oh you know yes okay tires all around 300 bucks the AC I can try to charge it and see if it's going to work if there's if it's good catastrophic something's wrong it usually is $900 for the compressor jar expansion valve go through the whole thing okay that's a lot maybe we'll get lucky though because if it's just a charge and a belt then we're talking $100 so yeah fingers crossed yeah anyone your rust-free car yeah and under coat it and protect it 425 that's very reasonable that yeah yeah always rust freeze not as bad as the LeBaron though where the guy told me it was rust free and then that one was every single panel this one is just a little this is just a little hole in the floor so it's fine needs to be fixed so before it gets worse perfect complete all this done for 2120 well that's a lot but that's if the AC is bad so we're a little over a thousand if it's okay not awful but also it's an old Volvo with really bad paint but I gotta fix it I'll never find another turbo brick and this one is is in decent condition and I have to see what these things are all about it's supposed to be one of the greatest cars of all time right well happy day for you wizard you've got you probably would once you get the Allante done you've got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini in here and well the 500 SL there's a lot of cars here project good yes oh boy thank you for watching
