welcome everybody to the volvo sleeper build brought to you by ebay where we are building a 600 horsepower turbo ls sleeper using parts entirely maybe i should buy a new camera battery from ebay too jeez where we are building a 600 horsepower turbo ls sleeper using parts entirely off of ebay did you guys know that there are nearly 65 million car parts listed for sale on ebay did you know that they sell a turbocharger every single minute how many minutes are in a year well i do one times 60 times 24 times 365. that means they sold 500 000 more than 500 000 turbochargers in a year so if you guys are looking to get some car parts check out the ebay app link in the description down below but anyway today we are gonna be heading to the junkyard to get a new solid axle for the volvo that can handle the 600 horsepower and the drag racing launches that we're gonna be throwing at it and the axle of choice is a ford eight eight which is an axle you can get for 200 bucks and can handle roughly 600 horsepower right out of the box if you're looking to get a ford a8 for your project you're in luck because at least in the states they are super common now the ford a8 came in early ford rangers and early ford explorers but you want the ford explorer version the ranger version had 28 spline axles and smaller axle tubes the explorer version had 31 spline axles and bigger axle tubes resulting in about a 25 increase in strength the explorer ford a8 comes in a bunch of different differential options and final drive options as well anywhere from a 308 final drive all the way up to a 410 final drive although these axles are common finding a specific one can be slightly difficult see a lot of explorers had a independent rear suspension and the ones that did have the solid axle mostly had 373 or 410 gears so if you're looking for a longer gear ratio like i was you might have to do some hunting now there are two ways you can identify a ford 88 firstly you can look at the door sticker on the driver's door on the bottom of that sticker is the axle code say the code is d4 well that means you've got a limited slip axle with a 373 final drive now the problem of identifying an axle that way is that a lot of cars at the junkyard either don't have doors or their doors are stuck shut the other way you can identify an axle is by the tag on the axle itself the tag should be located on the top right of the inspection cover on the axle there are only a few numbers of importance on the tag in the bottom left of the tag it'll say the gear ratio in this example says 373 that means you got a 373. the next two numbers are the ring diameter so if it says 7.5 that means you got a ford 7.5 it says 88 8.8 then you got a ford eight eight if there is an l in the gear ratio numbers that means you have the limited slip differential so in this example it's a 373 limited slip in a ford eight eight and that's how you find a ford 88 at a junkyard now if you're like me and you're lazy and you don't want to go to a junkyard and search and get the axle well you can head over to ebay and just purchase one and it will be delivered to your door now unfortunately if you're also like me and you're so lazy that you wait to the last minute to do stuff then you kind of have to get off your butt and go to the junkyard and get an axle because you can't wait the week or two weeks it takes to ship a solid axle so anyway let's go to the junkyard and get one of these axles out here and the aurora view pull it so we are looking for a 95-05 ford explorer well there's one right there some of them have uh irs though that's the problem too yeah this is irs solid axle d2 what do we do yeah well we got it out nice crusty unit but she's all in one piece really bleeding a little bit this is a ford eight eight with a 373 final drive and a factory limited slip differential now i wanted to get a longer final drive i was looking for a 327 final drive just because i want the volvo to be super nice to drive on the highway but this was unfortunately the only thing we could find so we're gonna run it and if we need to change it in the future we can before we can just put this thing in though we have to do some fabrication so to start off we have to remove everything cut off the sway bar mounts and the leaf spring mounts and make this a nice clean bare empty slate [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] that was dirty that was loud but it really wasn't nearly as bad as i remembered i remember the first time i did this it was like the hardest craziest thing i've ever done in fact i remember actually making the new axle mounts on the drift truck i think it was the first thing i ever welded on an actual car chassis was i made the exhaust for the previa but let's not talk about that anyway let me show you guys some of the parts that we have to put this axle into the volvo let me start off by giving a brief explanation on how we're mounting the new axle into the car because that'll help you understand the parts that we got so the factory solid axle is a four link suspension so that is the same style suspension that we put in the drift truck which is it's a good style suspension it's not leaf springs leaf springs kind of suck what we're pretty much going to do is replicate the factory brackets and control arms and just use that to mount the new axle in here of course all this stuff was purchased off ebay and i went ahead and included links to all the stuff in case you guys want any of it for your projects so starting off the big stuff we've got double adjustable coilovers these are qa1 coilovers which are budget friendly but really really good quality same coilovers we're using on the drift truck but these are double adjustable which means you can adjust compression and rebound separately that will help tune in the launches at the drag strip and then we got a spring it's a saw spring because we want the suspension to flex this coilover is the same length as the stock spring so this is going to go where the stock spring went now here i didn't buy these off ebay i lied so instead of buying a universal four-link kit like i did with the drift truck or trying to fabricate my own brackets with an angle grinder and a drill press i measured everything and i drew up some blueprints and then i hit up my friend dan you guys know he's got a plasma cutting table and he went ahead and converted my drawings into cad or whatever program it is and he cut out the brackets on his plasma table so that's awesome because all the brackets are identical they fit amazingly with a hammer that will think it's just it's perfect huge thank you to my friend dan now these are a bunch of beefy heim joints because instead of using rubber bushings like the factory arms we're using solid heim joints these will be welded to bars to create the new control arms and those control arms will be adjustable which will be awesome that way we can adjust toe we can adjust pinion angle i almost said camber but that's not how solid axles work and those heim joints are fitting in the stock locations they literally fit perfectly right there look at that now all the heim joints are chromoly and they are the same size but i have different size misalignment spacers which are these guys these things are impossible to find anywhere except ebay it's the strangest thing because you need them anytime you're using heim joints but they're so hard to find i could only find them on ebay which is perfect because ebay so that's that and then that is oh wait no no sorry that's not for the solid axle i know i've done a lot of talking and explaining in this video but i want you guys to actually learn something from these videos instead of just watching me um so hopefully you're cool of that but without any further ado let's go ahead and start welding those brackets onto the ford eight eight i went ahead and took all the measurements from the factory axle where the bottom mounts are where the top mounts are how far they are from the outside from the inside blah blah blah blah and i went ahead and traced that onto the new axle so all we got to do now is weld the brackets on [Music] this is what ninety dollars worth of bolts looks like [Music] brackets are all cleaned up holes are drilled out everything is now looking perfect let's weld these suckers on [Music] so [Music] wow i'm pumped with how this is turning out all the brackets are now tacked on the measurements are nearly perfect i'm at a little bit of a crossroads because i don't want to fully weld these brackets without testing suspension and cycling it but i don't want to cycle the suspension and test it when it's only tacked together because it could snap something but for now i'm going to focus on making those arms alright so the upper arm is roughly roughly 16 inches long your lower arm the lower arm is roughly 22 and 3 8. [Music] after a lot of tig welding with the wonderful htp welder we got the two bottom arms which are hot and still cooling off and then we got the two top arms which are everything's looking freaking great now i know you guys want to see the axle put into the car today but i've got a lot of work ahead of me and i got to get this video out to you guys so i'm going to end it here in the next video we will finish the axle and we will get it in the car you can watch it right now it's live on patreon either way thank you guys so much for the support huge thank you to ebay for making this build possible if you want to check out oh wait i was just like oh i'm wearing a black hoodie it's got to be my ginger hoodie no these are not my hoodies but if you want to check out some hoodies or shirts there'll be a link in the description too thank you guys goodbye have a great one [Music] you
