In this Gimp workshop we will see, how we can change a portrait into a cartoon, using the pen tool. If you want to follow along, the download link for the image is in the video description. Press Ctrl+O, search for your image and open it. Now we go to image, mode and indexed. Here we check the option generate optimum palette. We make the maximum number of colors 3, and click convert. We do this to help us select certain areas. You might want to experiment a bit with the number, when you use an image of your own. Now we go back to image, mode and make it RGB. Double click on the name and rename it indexed. Hit enter. Press Ctrl+Alt+O and open the image again as layer. We can use both layers as reference. Lower this layer one place down, by clicking on this downwards pointing arrow. Make the top layer active. Press Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. Name it skin. The mode should be normal and the fill type transparency. Click okay. We are going to make a selection of the skin. This can be done roughly, where the skin touches the hair or the coat. But were the skin touches the background, we have to be precise. Activate the paths tool. Zoom in or out by holding the Ctrl key and rolling the mouse wheel. Click a node. Then click the next node, but hold the mouse button down and draw the handle out. In this way we can make a curve. Then we let go of the handle. Place the handle back to its node. Now we click the next node and drag out the handle to make a curve. Let go and then place it back to its node. Move the image by holding the space bar and moving the mouse without clicking. With Ctrl+Z we can undo one or more steps. We are going fast forward now. When we are close to the first node, we hover the last node over the first one. Then we press and hold the Ctrl key and when we see the chain icon, we click to close the path. Press Ctrl+Shift+J. Hit the foreground of the foreground/background colors, to bring up the color selection dialog. Fill in the HTML notation f 1 a e 6 4. Hit enter and then click okay. Now click on the button fill path. Make sure that the option solid color is checked, and click on fill. Hit the B key to make the path invisible. Make the opacity of the skin layer about 30. This is, so we can see in the next step what we are doing. Press Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. Name it shadow. Make the layer mode multiply. The fill type should be transparency. Click okay. We work on multiply layers, so we can always go back to change, edit or even make it anew. Now we will make a selection of the shadows. Here to we do not have to work precise, in the areas where the shadow touches the hair and the coat. Again, we go fast forward. All done? Press Ctrl+Shift+J to maximize the image. Make the color selection dialog visible. Fill in the HTML notation: 6 5 6 5 6 5. Then click okay. Hit the button fill path. Click on the fill button. Press the B key again. Click on the skin layer and make the opacity 100. Click on the shadow layer and here we make the opacity about 75. Now we can get a first glimpse of how our cartoon will look. Press Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. Name it white. Make the layer mode normal. The fill type should be transparency. Click okay. Click on the bend arrow of the foreground/background colors. Our foreground color is now white. We will make selections of the eyes, like shown in the video. We can click on the skin layer again and reduce the opacity to 30, so we can see what we are doing. Click on the top layer, zoom in and make the selections. Press Ctrl+Shift+J again. Then click on the button fill path. And on the button fill. Press the B key again. And again we hit Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. This time we name it hair. Click okay. Click on the reset button of the foreground/background colors so we get black as the foreground color. Here the whole selection has to be precise. Now we make a selection of the hair. We go fast forward again. Press Ctrl+Shift+J. Then click on fill path, and on fill. Hit the B key. Press Ctrl+Shift+N for the next new layer. Name this layer coat, and click okay. Bring up the color selection dialog box again. Fill in the HTML notation: 2 5 2 5 2 5, which is a dark gray. Hit okay. Make a selection of the coat. And again, fast forward we go. Press Ctrl+Shif+J. Hit the button fill path and click fill. Press the B key. Hit the reset button once more, so we have black as the foreground color. And again, Ctrl-Shift+N. Name this layer black and click okay. Activate the bottom layer, press and hold the shift key. Now hit the upwards pointing arrow to put this layer on top of the layers stack. Make the opacity about 50, so this can help us with filling in the black areas. Activate the black layer. Make selections like shown in the video. It can help to fill every area right away, to see how it looks by hitting the button fill path and then fill. Turning the top layer off and on also helps to see how we are doing. And fast forward we go. When you think its okay, press Ctrl+Shift+J. Hit the B key and make the top layer invisible. Press Ctrl+Shift+N and name the next layer highlights hair. Hit okay. Here to we can make the top layer visible, but make sure that the highlights layer is active. Switch the foreground background colors so white is the foreground color. Make the highlights, and again fill them right away. And the video goes fast forward. All done? Press Ctrl+Shift+J and then press the B key. Make the top layer invisible and adjust the opacity of the highlights to your liking. Make a new layer with Ctrl+Shift+N and name this one highlights coat. Hit okay. Make the top layer visible. Select the areas, more or less like shown in the video. And, fast forward for the last time. Hit the button fill path, and the button fill. Press Ctrl+Shift+J. Hit the B key, and make the top layer invisible. Adjust the opacity to your liking. Now, for the last time we make a new layer with Ctrl+Shift+N, and we call this one highlights eyes. Hit okay. Activate the pencil tool. Choose brush hardness 100, and make the size about 20. Zoom in to the eyes but make sure that both eyes stay visible. In this way we can make highlights in both eyes, but on the same position. When this is done we make the whole image visible again by pressing Ctrl+Shift+J. Select the bottom layer. Click on the foreground color and fill in the HTML notation 5 9 2 2 4 6. Click okay. Drag and drop the foreground color into the image to get our colored background. Select the skin layer and make its opacity 100. Select the shadow layer and reduce the opacity to your own preference. And there we have our cartoon. I hope this helps and that you have fun with this tutorial. If so, please give it thumbs up. Thank you for watching.
