In this Gimp Workshop tutorial we are going to create an ink smudge portrait. We will start by making our own brush. When Gimp is open, we go to file and to new. We make the width 350, press the tab key and make the hight 500. Press enter or hit okay. Then we go to view, zoom and fit image in window. Back to the menu bar and now to image and mode. We change the mode to grayscale which is necessary to make the brush. Make the paintbrush active. Choose brush acrylic 05 and make the size about 100. Click on dynamics, scroll down and choose the option track direction. This makes our brush rotate while we use it. Click in the image to make a first start of the brush, like so. It is important not to make our brush to massive but fairly irregular. If we do not like what we see, we can always use Ctrl+Z to undo one or more previous steps, and try again. Then we choose brush texture hose 1. Make its size also 100. And again click in the image and make a few irregular splats, more or less like so. Again, we must be careful not to overdo this. Now we choose brush oils 02 and here we leave the size at its default 94. Click several times in the image. Pick brush oils 03, and make the size 100. Work some more on the brush. And for the last brush we pick splats 02. Change the size to about 150, and make some splats. When we think that the brush looks okay, we go to edit in the menu bar and hit copy. Under the brush tab we can see that it is now copied to the clipboard. Back to edit and now to paste as new brush. In the dialog box we name the brush Ink. Then we click okay or hit enter. And now we can see our newly made brush in the brush window. When we right click on the brush, and then on show in file manager, we can see where our brush is saved. Time now to open the image of the woman. Go to file and open. In the open image dialog box we can search for our image, and open it. If you want to use the same image as in the video, there is a download link in the video description. Then we go to view, zoom and fit the image in the window. Right click on the layer and click on add alpha channel. Press Ctrl+Shift+D to make a duplicate of this layer. With the top layer active, we go to colors, desaturate and click on color to gray. Here we make the radius about 500, and the samples 10. Click okay. Back to colors and now to curves. Adjust the curves, more or less like shown in the video. Click okay. Press Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. Name it foreground and change the fill type to white. Hit okay. In the toolbox we click on the eraser tool. Make sure that the Ink brush is active. Make its size 1500. Change the force to 75. Click on dynamics and choose the option dynamics off. Click ones or twice, more or less in the center of the image. Then reduce the size to about 700. Now we click several times in the image, to show some more of the portrait. While we do this, we can change the angle of the brush. It is okay to leave some white in the face, but the eyes however should be good visible, just as the hand. After a few clicks, we can reduce the force to about 30, and click some more on the outer area. Here too we can undo with Ctrl+Z. When all this is to your liking, we make the middle layer active. Click on the add layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel. We should have white full opacity checked. Now click add. Click on the paintbrush. Bring back some color, but here too we must be careful not to overdo this. We still want to have black and white in our image. And there we have our ink smudge portrait. I hope you liked this tutorial. If so, please give it thumbs up. And a nice comment is of course very welcome. Thank you for watching.
