i was eight years old trapping muskrats on lightning creek when something came alive inside me i promised myself i would somehow live like the mountain man of old [Music] since then i've guided hunters in alaska for more than two decades and counting all told eight years of my life has been lived out of a tent in the wilderness the majesty solitude trials endured and tribulations overcome the endless wonders of nature and divine orchestration of everything in it keep calling me back kodiak alaska spring 2011. let's go bear hunting so [Music] so home sweet home man yes sir for at least next 15 days yeah you're officially sure you want to do this now yes sir so backing out now perfect time [Laughter] ryan and jeremy from north carolina that's us are you ready we are ready let the adventure begin [Music] [Music] [Music] a saw in the middle there one comes off in the alders the left the other ones pretty decent day not real warm but a little bit of sunshine nine and a half foot boy right from base camp with a rubbed shoulder day three definite shooter if he wasn't rubbed probably 1200 1300 yards away [Music] so we have no other idea who this is but they just came out of the sky i hope ryan's got his license the law attracting ryan all the way up to alaska [Applause] he's heading over to base camp check the permits there we are on the stock day four kodiak island i'm coldly stripped a bunch of layers it's uh 10 minutes till 10 we're chasing after a bear up on this mountain we're going to be pushing the darkness factor for sure it's pretty good ways up well i guess that's the way the cookie crumbles yeah he's big and he's fixing to get him snug you look at their legs and even down here they're as big as they are at the top of the leg well two minutes into the stock it's over boar's chasing us out there's the boar there's this out we didn't see the sow at all so we'll be looking for them in the morning because he's a pig head back to base camp it beer 30 10 35 p.m ryan just got done seeing his first 10-footer [Music] spotted by hawkeye hopefully tomorrow he'll be taking a third [Music] a run on a big bear spotted him last night right there saw his tracks they went around the mountain they disappeared right in this basin at the base of those big rocks thought about going in after them we couldn't see the tracks come out anywhere but we decided to wait if we could see them three o'clock in the afternoon we saw him climbing the mountain then rolling back down into this hidden basin in there so we're going up up and away fifth of may here we go hopefully he's got that sow in there they stay put there's a small bear right there right on the shore spotted the bear half hour he always bought him last night right there then he chased the sow went up over the top of the mountain this was late at night went across that snow slide and he's in a bowl at the head of a canyon about two miles from here so we're off and running we got a big bear go time [Music] spotted the bear from right there today we saw him there last night on the way home chased the style up that hill during the night and then they came down right there they went in that bowl i figured i didn't think they came out we saw one of them about three o'clock there's no tracks going out yet so pretty quick uh video but getting pretty late 5 30. we're going to throw on the snowshoes and get her done we got snow shoes on all right [Music] [Music] afternoon [Music] we're on the stock a little after seven day seven got a good bear spotted about two hours ago he's a little over a mile away up the hill kind of been working down and going into the wind so we're coming from downwind of course as we round the bushes give you a little video bears right there working his way down nine footer at least let's get a bear i love their hunting it's been pretty slow we've seen 30 bears i've maybe seen one that was bigger than this one but tough to get on them a lot of them with rubbed hides this one's got a good hide so we're off so hour and a half into the stock there's a bear 400 yards probably moved in around 300 yards at least that's the game plan here we go boys [Applause] yes sir [Applause] i'm ready [Applause] [Music] he's going getting open right now [Applause] here it takes that [Applause] okay shoot him again he's all yours dang it you got that buddy you got a dead bear he's done he's done you pondered him oh give me some baby look at this gun he short shot him our short jammed it don't worry we got him thank you lord was that a bear huh what is he taking the third year what is he taking dirt now [Laughter] oh day seven paco called it pacquiao has been the man he's been spotting bears kodiak brown bear mate what the hell is it seven seven and i called the 30th bear and this is what 30th bear shot him at 60 yards it was a long sneak we bumped into a sow up above us and it was just too light colored and we peeked over in this little drainage this bear was embedded in the snow gave a few predator calls as we were sneaking in he stood up and he just had he could i think he could see us working in the alders and after the predator calls he had to come in and he came sneaking in was that any fun fellas i'll see baby thank you man you bet and this fog started settling in and we could just barely see the bear he was right there working his way down we'll see paco videoed it and you could just barely see him he was 120 yards away and i was nervous we were gonna get fogged out but it looks like it might clear hey nothing like a late afternoon stroll getting about 55 yards from a bear i love it when a plan comes together 30th bear that would probably about the second one we actually could have shot seen any bears oh look at the paw on that thing that front pad's nine inches across i don't know if he's going to make 10 but the front pad's 9 inches pick up the melon on that burger look at that hide i think that's either the first if that's the same bear we saw the other day i don't know but look at those pads how much that way bud perfect that's got to be a nine nine and a half foot bear front pads nine or ten nine inches across so that would usually mean 10-footer billy thank you thank everybody at home carla breyer mom dad everybody at home love you guys this is a dream come true oh god i'm just staying might gear up it's may the 7th coach razor lake kodiak out seventh day of the hunt we saw 30 30 there this is number 30. i want to say this mr dream come true thank you guys nice ivory claws boy [Music]
