GI 275, GNS 530W and KFC 150 - Flying a course reversal/hold in RNAV approach

welcome back everybody i was asked a question on an online forum as to whether my 275 depicts as magenta a hold or course reversal when the 530 is showing the same thing that is magenta and therefore that being the active leg in the flight plan and so i decided to do a flight just to show that it actually does and how it works and i want to show you inside the cockpit how i set it up and what you're supposed to be doing so join me in the cockpit welcome aboard everybody let me show you what i did in flight um i had set up a flight plan from fernandina to to cannon creek and with lake city as one of the waypoints in the way and you can see the flight plan right here on the on the ipad i've superimposed the uh the approach on it on the map and um so that i could actually load the approach in the 530 i went direct to the lake city and then selected the approach and on f28 go to the initial approach fix which is orejo and let's go to this page now and do some writing on it so my initial approach fix was also the intermediate fix which is the top of the t and when i'm coming from the east it will ask me whether i want to fly the course reversal or not in this case i'm sitting right here and coming from the west it absolutely assumes that i have to do the course reversal there's no way to do this sharp turn otherwise so um i included the hold to show how it would work and depict on 530 275 and the my ipad garmin app and once i was going direct to aurejo then the mfd map page as well as let me do this on the mfd map page i can scroll here mfd map page i showed the hold not as the active leg yet until i would have cros until i would cross array home then it would show the hold as the active leg and it did that perfectly it showed it on the 275s navigation page on the mfd map page on the hsi map page on the hsi map page now on my notepad there we go on the hsi map page everywhere and it was magenta it was the active waypoint was the hold if you're flying a course reversal then the 530 assumes it's only one turn and will uh not suspend active uh waypoint sequencing and once you come in and cross arejo it will move on to the final approach fix making the final approach fix your final your active waypoint at that point once you once this becomes the active waypoint then um the 530 will enunciate what kind of approach you have available lpv lnf plus vnab or whatever and and at that point you can engage the autopilot in approach mode and we'll fly the vertical guidance as well i had the the airplane in the autopilot in heading mode and the 275 gps steering mode so that when i was coming in here it would fly directly to orejo and then keep as close as possible to the to the hold pattern and with aid of gps roll steering from the 530. it did pretty well except on this first part of the leg i was going pretty fast and i had to win from the southwest and that was pushing me significantly it was indicating 168 knots so let's see how it worked in flight and see up in there up in the air vernon beach traffic money 405 charlie papa departing zero nine fernandinho westbound departure jack's approaching 49er five charlie papa 495 one it shows a hold right there as well everywhere my 5 30 on my 275 hsi not the hsi but the map on the mfd map just got to increase the uh range and it's right there you can see it very well so i'm sure it's going to show me magenta hold as well i should start down here jax bro 2495 charlie papa is starting down who's that mooney 49er five charlie papa starting down out of 6 hundred tripod roger right hello 2000 then on down so we're gonna do one turn it'll be a direct entry it's showing it right there on the nav page up at 5 30. then straight forward all right the lights came on two miles away just about all direct that's what this is saying and magenta on the hold on the hsi map i'm going pretty fast so it's staying outside of the hole it's not doing it perfectly but still doing it i got magenta everywhere on the 530 on the 275 hsi map on my ipad and let's go to the map page here and on the map page so it's on everywhere a little bit outside the magenta not too bad correcting for it maybe it was a little bit just too fast for its parameters and i'm right on the magenta line and we're three nautical away from arejo and at four it should start to turn here shortly yep all the altitude 283 let's see if it stays in the turn we've got pretty strong crosswind here let's see what it does staying right on it now in case i wanted to stay in the hole that have to press suspend right now and stay keep on turning and i'm not going to do that on to opie and that's exactly what i did at lpb once we passed all rijo into opiate once we finish a turn lake city traffic mooney 405 charlie papa is 9 east 2000 feet westbound lake city traffic let's put the hsi page now gives me a little better idea right and left of course and plus other information about how far away i am and time to away point okay it's captured the glide slope and it's wanted to bring me down but i'm going to disconnect the autopilot lake city traffic money 495 charlie papa is uh five east 1900 westbound big city lake city traffic money 405 charlie pop by departing traffic westbound and a great traffic money fire five charlie papa four east one thousand four hundred landing three six cannon creek post up county creek traffic money 495 charlie papa's journey final three six cannon creek full stop all right over all the bumps
