bethenny can we make some noise for Jesus tonight I'm so incredibly excited to be here been looking forward to worshipping with you experiencing what God is doing in this place I heard y'all been turned up oh we incredibly incredibly honored to be here and just have great admiration and respect and appreciation for the life and for the ministry for the leadership of one of the most gifted and anointed I think I'm borderline hating a little bit he can sing he can lead he can preach he can play it's kind of not fair but we just honor you and your leadership and your incredible family and I'm glad to call you friend and brother thank you for the trust to participate in what God's doing here and this great great great legacy and you know I think the culture of the kingdom is a culture of honor honor says a whole lot more about who you are then who someone else is and and I think that God honors honor and I just want to honor one of the most influential and significant voices in my life we met several years ago and I'm grateful to God for him and for the great blessing he's been to me and my family he's only working with one arm tonight but he rolled all the way up with us from Lafayette Louisiana I call them to brown Bishop pastor Jacob I ran and to have him with us tonight so there's something I want to share with you it's a found in the Gospel of John chapter 5 I want to read a brief part of what I believe to be a very significant story I'm gonna start reading at verse 5 I read from the New International Version of the scriptures and so if the language is a bit different from your version the essence of what the text is saying is the same John 5 verse 5 if you click there or turn there or if you if you're ready I want you to say I'm ready it says this one who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years and when Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time he asked him do you want to get well sir the invalid replied I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred while I'm trying to get in someone else goes down ahead of me then jesus said to him get up pick up your mat and walk at once the man was cured he picked up his mat and walked the day on which this took place was the Sabbath clause of concern for our time together tonight as found in verse 8 when Jesus said to him get up pick up your mat and walk and our time together I want to talk and teach from this subject tonight and this is the first thing last time I'm gonna ask you to do this but I want you to say it with me you're not saying it to your neighbor but you're saying it so that your neighbor can hear you tell them the topic of this teaching everybody say get up there are a number of appropriate words that can be used and often used to describe the evidence or the fruit of God's work in our life words like justification and sanctification and regeneration and redemption and all those words although those words are accurate and appropriate there is one I'd like to use that I believe summarizes it all frankly simply and candidly when God gets to work in our lives the fruit of that work is improvement wherever there is divine involvement there will be automatic improvement God does not involve himself with anything he has no intention of improving he is obsessed by improvement he is dedicated to improvement he organically and automatically improves whatever he engages with you know what a miracle is improvement you know what happens when God brings people into your life improvement do you know what happens when he takes people out improvement do you know what happens when he opens a door do you know what happens when he closes a door he is obsessed with improvement when he fixes something he's fixing something and when he breaks something he's fixing something whatever wherever there is divine involvement there will be automatic improvement he makes things better and it may not initially be better it may not initially feel better it may not initially look better but God works incremental II not in completely so if he is not finished it is not better and if it is not better he isn't done because when he gets done it gets better when he gets done with your mind it gets better when he gets done with your heart it gets better when he gets done with your relationships it gets better and if it is not better yet don't succumb to the lies of the adversary and the enemy if it isn't better God isn't done because when he gets done it will be this is this is God's intention this is God's design this is God's desire this is God's preferred future for us it is his preferred future for us it is what he prefers to happen it is what he has committed to make happen it is what he is willing to move heaven and earth to accomplish but God's preference is not always our experience in order for God's preference to be our experience God needs requires our participation and there are times when what he prefers is one thing and what we experience is another there are times when he prefers for us to get up and we can actually live laying down and the question you might ask is why and the answers right here in John 5 sometimes we stay down when he wants to get up because we don't feel like getting up Pass odorous what do you mean it's it's right here it's right here in in John 5 we get to we get to get exposed to an incident in the life of Jesus John tells us that Jesus journeys to a place called Bethesda and John gives us some very significant details about this place called Bethesda john tells us that bethesda was near a sheep gate it tells us on the other side of that sheep gate was a pool and this pool was surrounded by five porches that had five pillars there's a sheep gate and on the other side the sheep gate there's a pool and the pool is surrounded by five covered porches that are supported by five pillars there is a sheep gate and on the other side of the Sheep gate there's a pool and surrounding the pool are five porches that are supported by five pillars there's a sheep gate and on the other side of the Sheep gate there's a pool and surrounding the pool are five porches that are supported by five pillars there is a sheep gate but when you go through the Sheep gate you get access to the pool and when you get access to the pool you're surrounded by five covered porches that upheld by five pillars see you cannot get to the pool unless you go through the Sheep gate but once you come through the Sheep gate you get access to a pool and not only do you get access to a pool you get surrounded by five covered porches that are supported by five pillars the way to the pool is through the gate and once you make your way through the gate you get access to the pool that's surrounded by five cover porches you do know everything in scripture has a natural meaning and a spiritual meaning the text means what it meant but it means what it means for us I want you to know that the sheep gate is a metaphor for Jesus because he is the way we get access to the pool which is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit which is surrounded by five pillars which represent the apostle prophet evangelist pastor and teacher and it is at a place called Bethesda Beth is a Hebrew prefix that means house or place and it is a synthesis of two words that means house or place of grace see the only way you can get to the house or the place of grace is come through the way the truth and the life and you get access to the Holy Spirit I wanna know is there anybody here that's grateful for Jesus that gives you access to the Holy Spirit and you can meet him in the place of grace it's it's a place of grace a place where you come to get what you don't deserve a place where you become a bit of factor and a beneficiary of God's benevolence for which there is no explanation it's a place where God demonstrates his goodness to you in such a way that you can't even articulate or explain why he's been so good to you it's he's so generous and so benevolent that you're surprised at his goodness it's the church the place of grace where the unexplainable happens and and at this place of grace John tells us there were a bunch of people there it says there were some blind people there some lame people there some paralyzed people they're all in this place of grace the church God's environment the church God's environment right the the the principle of the place the law of environment my welfare and my well-being is not just determined by Who I am it is equally impacted by where I am in the creation narrative God spends five days creating the place only one day creating the person because he knows if he gets the place right the person will thrive he created water before he created fish he created the sky before he created birds because he knows that in order for his creation to thrive it's got to be in the right place this is why after you've been in church a week for prayer you come back out to church on a Tuesday night because you understand the power of the place you know supernatural things happen when you get in the right place so you've got people in the right place but they're experiencing limited improvement they're in an environment that is supposed to improve them but they are experiencing limited improvement they're in Bethesda but still blind everything has a natural meaning and a spiritual meaning blind they literally couldn't see spiritually this refers to those who are in Bethesda but still living life with no vision a vision las' existence living without a picture of God's preferred future for their life and when you don't have a picture of what God wants to do tomorrow it becomes extraordinarily difficult to survive today sometimes the only thing that gets you through today is a vision of what God wants to do tomorrow vision lists in Bethesda the Bible says not only were there people there who didn't have vision but the Bible also says that there were people there who were lame now how is this different from someone who's paralyzed it speaks to the the likelihood that some people may have had some use of some of their faculties but not all of the use of all of their faculties it speaks to metaphorically being in Bethesda but still realizing and recognizing I'm not living according to my potential I'm not using all God gave me I know there's more in me than this I feel fulfilled and frustrated at the same time I'm grateful for what I have but I'm hungry for what God wants to do I want to know is there anybody in Bethany that's here tonight that says I am content but I'm not satisfied I'm grateful for what I have but I'm hungry for what God wants to do I'm praising him for the past but I mean I am in anticipation and expectation for the future so I felt lame probably like David felt when he got anointed to be king and then the same man who anointed him left him in the same place he found him so David had a king's anointing but a Shepherds responsibility his ability and his responsibility didn't match lame but in Bethesda then the Bible says there's a group of people there that are paralyzed which speaks to people being in Bethesda but feeling like time is moving but I'm not time is moving but I'm not it speaks to people who experience a plateau in their progress at one point they felt progress and they were moving and things were on an upward trajectory and then all of a sudden they hit a season where things felt like they just stood still have you ever felt that way in your life my mind my heart my relationships my resources stuck and all of these people are in Bethesda singing songs lifting hands serving on Dream Team involved in groups smiling on the outside but on the inside blind lay and stop and when people inquire about how they're doing they respond with church colloquialisms and religious rhetoric unless college they friend god is good all the time and all the time god is good but on the inside they're wondering god what's up with this you didn't create me just for this you've made too much investment in me just for this I know you didn't bring me out of that just for this I know you didn't just protect me from that just for this and in the midst of all of these people jesus walks into bethesda out of all the places he could have went he walks then but best comes through dripping [Applause] and out of all of the people there he literally has to walk around people and he walks up to this one man who had a condition that contributed to his paralysis for 38 years so his paralysis wasn't his issue his paralysis was the fruit of an issue he had an issue that caused issues out of all of the people Jesus could have went to he went to this one person and the Bible gives us no explanation for it so the only conclusion we should responsibly draw from this kind of activity of Jesus is that it was grace it's just a picture of grace it's just a powerful picture of grace unearned unmerited undeserved favor well out of everybody Jesus could have came to he came to you out of everyone Jesus could have called he called you out of everyone Jesus could have used he used you out of everyone Jesus could have saved he saved you out of everyone Jesus could have protected he protected you it's a picture of favor he walks up to this man and the Bible says that he saw that this man had been in this condition a long time a long time a long time how long 38 years why did John give us that kind of detail we didn't need to know 38 years John just could have said a long time but John made sure that we knew it was 38 years because maybe he wants us to see something very significant about the power of a time frame Jesus walks up to this man and Acts him this question do you want to be made well this seems like an insensitive question I've been in this condition 38 years and you're asking me do I want to be made well could it be that when Jesus asks a question like this he's not asking a question to get an answer but he's asking a question to give an answer could it be he's not asking that question to learn something but he's asking that question to teach something he asked a man who has a physical condition a feeling question he says do you want to it's a feeling question do you want to I know I know you've been in this condition a long time and I want to but I need to know do you want to I want to but do you want to because the transformation of your condition is going to require your participation and you're going to have to make a decision I've already made a decision that I can help you up you have to make a decision do you want to break a cycle that you've been in for over three decades do you want to break this are you do you wanna are you tired of New Year same Matt or are you are you tired of settling for limited improvement when you serve a god who's committed to change everything will you just settle for morality when God wants to give you complete transformation do you want to maybe Jesus is teaching us something maybe Jesus is teaching us something maybe maybe he asks this question because he's teaching us something about decisions and that when it comes to the decisions that need to be made to transform conditions that more often than not those decisions are not driven by faith they are driven by feelings and he says in order for you to make the decision that you're gonna have to make to make the CH to experience the changes you want to experience it means that there's some feelings you're going to have to deal with because our decisions are like cars where we end up is based on who's behind the wheel and more often than not it's not just faith that's behind the wheel it's feelings that are behind the wheel feelings feelings feelings maybe maybe Jesus is is it's teaching us that it's our feelings and not always our faith that drives our decisions and jesus knew that sometimes people are stuck in seasons that have become cycles because they don't feel like doing what it takes to get out I'm looking for the honest section tonight that will say sometimes I know I need to pray because it's going to help me get up but I don't pray because I don't feel like it and there are times that I need to read the word because it's going to help sustain me and anchor me spiritually but I don't read the words because I don't feel like it and I know I need more than principles and teaching from God I need a touch from God and I know that only comes when I enter into his gates with Thanksgiving and to his courts with praise but there are times I am not demonstrative and engaged in worship because I don't feel like it and if the enemy can hide was driving our decisions then the enemy can keep control of our decisions but he's in trouble tonight at Bethany because God is pulling the covers off of the enemy and exposing feelings that have been in the driver's seat and I believe 2019 is the year where we are no longer going to allow our feelings to cause I like to crash this is our year cute kit I'm on my way I see up I'm going to live up his fearless it's interesting because Jesus is about to give this man some instruction that's going to produce some emotion Jesus is about to tell this man to do something he hadn't done for 38 years he's about to tell this man to do something he has not done for 38 years God's getting ready to tell him to do something he doesn't think he can do he's laying there and he's laid there for 38 years and Jesus is getting ready to instruct him to do something that's going to make him emotional I questioned the accuracy of a person's ear when they say God speaks to them and nothing that God says makes them emotional when God told Jonah to go to Nineveh that made him emotional right when the Prophet told naman you have to go to that dirty Jordan River and you have to dip seven times it made naman when more Takato Esther you're going to have to go in front of a narcissistic unpredictable egotistical King it made Esther and sometimes when God says love your enemies it makes us when God says give that you like give what how much it makes us God's instruction produces emotion and how we manage the emotion determines our decision and the decision is what transforms the condition what if I told you every miracle in the New Testament began with a decision that when the wine ran out Mary made a decision to go get Jesus when Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by he made a decision to open his mouth when the woman with the issue of blood heard that Jesus was in town she made a decision if I could but touch the hem of His garment I'll be made whole when the syrophoenician woman needed her daughter to be free from an evil spirit she made a decision to go to Jesus and when Jesus says it is only fitting for me to give the children's bread to the people of Israel she stayed right there and made a decision to refuse to be offended and said but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the children's playbook all life change begins with a decision and you can make a decision at the beginning of 2019 that this year will not be like next year did not requires a decision what did Jesus say to this man he says get up and this man is probably thinking if I could do that Jesus the nerve of Jesus to tell you to do what you think you can't the nerve of Jesus to challenge you to do what you hadn't done in 38 years the nerve of Jesus to call you into a dimension of living that you didn't even think was possible he was probably comfortable on that mat had his legs crossed on that mat thinking he's gonna spend the rest of his life on that mat getting ready to settle for that man and here comes Jesus with a holy agitation and a holy discontent and makes the uncomfortable comfortable and the comfortable uncomfortable and says get up right when you get comfortable get up right when you think this is the end get up he doesn't get up and he had never done it before and he's able to make a statement like that because only the creator of a thing knows the capacity of a thing I created you and I don't know what's in you and if I tell you to do it it's because I see something in you and I know I put something there that you hadn't discovered yet and I want you to know their levels to you I want you to know their layers to you I want you to know their parts of you that you hadn't even met yet and you got giftings and callings and capability that Jesus is getting ready to introduce you to created she he knows what's in you and he said you can do it you can do it somebody pause for a minute and praise God for untapped legit come on if you believe God's getting ready to show you potential that you didn't know you had [Applause] and is so interesting the Bible says when Jesus said get up if you look at the text it says at once 38 years and when Jesus said get up at once he was cured when Jesus said get up he got cured and I know we live in an age and era of anti supernaturalism that's concerning for me because the more the world becomes like Rome the more the church has become like X so we live in this era of anti supernaturalism where there there is the idolatry of reason and there is an explaining away and a marginalization of the power of God and so people now begin to worship their own intellect and assume that a notebook filled with sermon notes has the capacity to bring about the kind of transformation that can only come with a synergy and a merger of the principles of God and the presence of God you need teaching from God but we need a touch from God so inherit in Jesus's word was the ability and the empowerment for a man to obey when he spoke it it empowered a man who I've been there 38 years to get up and maybe maybe I'll 38 years in 38 years but maybe the 38 years teaches us something maybe it teaches us that time is not sovereign because if you believe that it can't be done now because it hasn't been done yet what you're saying is time has the last say and not God when God comes and changes something that had been unchanged for 38 years it is a message sent to you in me that it does not matter how long it has been unchanged it does not matter how many times you've tried to change it and failed when Jesus says it's your time to get up whatever is holding you has to let you go and the Bible says this man took up his bed and walked he started carrying the thing that was carrying him he started holding the thing that was holding him as a testimony to those of us who are here today that it doesn't matter what it is it doesn't change who he is it teaches us the importance of having not just strong faith but having long faith did you hear me we need more than strong faith we need long faith sometimes it's not how big you can believe it's how long you can believe can you keep on believing when it seems like believing isn't working and you look storms in the face and say one of us is going to quit first but it will not be me I believe God and I want to know is there anyone here tonight that will say that I believe God I still believe God I still believe God I've tried and failed but I still believe I prayed and it didn't work but I still believe and I fasted and it didn't turn but I still believe I don't just have strong faith I have a long paint I believe God this man got up but in order to get up he had to get over his feelings because when you've been laying that long sometimes you don't feel like kid not yet to get over some emotional hurdles to get up yet he had to remove those feelings from the driver's seat of his decisions to get up and as I closed there there are three emotional hurdles he had to get over in order to get up that we may need to take into consideration for our own lives number one he had to get over discouragement from disappointment notice the man said year after year I keep coming here so he's dealing with not just a physical condition but he's also dealing with this emotional rollercoaster because he's getting his hopes up that things are going to change and every year he keeps getting disappointed so it's really this psychological and emotional trauma that he's dealing with he's torturing himself emotionally because his expectations are high and then he's disappointed and then he probably says to himself to protect myself I'm not going to believe again so he begins to theologizing explain away his tame faith and when you hope for something and believe for something and you got those hopes up and it doesn't happen no I don't think books of the Bible like Jobe are explored enough because there's no room in our theology for trauma you just try to pray it away when when job is you don't talk about loss and grief and disappointment and trauma we're hoping this this is the conversation that's gonna turn my child this is the conversation it's gonna turn my spouse this is this is the rehab stand that's gonna get them clean and this is this is the time that I'm gonna really get the good report and those hopes are up and you walk away or get carried away from that pool again disappointed that disappointment in the past can cause discouragement in the present and I'm telling you right now whenever you deal with anyone who is discouraged chronically it is because if you examine their history you will see consistent disappointment something happened they stopped them from believing you have to get he has to get over that discouragement from that disappointment and make a decision that I am NOT going to judge my future based on my past that my history does not determine my destiny and what can happen is not dictated by what it has not happened I serve a god what would have happened if this man didn't come one more time what would have happened if he didn't tell somebody just carry me there one more time he was one visit away from changing his life one decision and what if I told you that sometimes the enemy's goal is not to take you out but it's to wear you down Oh Delilah wore Samson down if he can't take you out he wears you out someone who stripped you of your faith and the Bible says the enemy comes to steal kill and destroy he's not always trying to kill sometimes he's trying to steal and we go through seasons and we survive those seasons we celebrate I survive and the image like I wasn't trying to kill I was trying to steal you survived but you left something in that season you need for this one had to get over this discouragement from disappointment number two he had to get over anger from the absence of assistance when Jesus said do you want to be made well he said I do but I don't have anybody to help me because every time that water is stirred at that pool whoever gets him first gets healed everybody else goes in ahead of me so I have to watch other people who have helped get what I want to have every year he had to watch people get what he wanted and the believer in him is conflicted because he doesn't want to be a hater but he's confused he's confused see this difference between being confused and being covetous covetousness you know I don't want you to have it I want what you have confuse this I just I want you to have it I just don't know why it's not having it for me he didn't have help and that's true and some of you are having to do things without help that you shouldn't have to do by yourself some of you are raising people you should have to raise by yourself and you're supporting what you shouldn't have to support by yourself and you're having to get through school without the support by yourself and you don't have the emotional help that you need and you don't and that can make you angry when the people that you needed to be there weren't even Jesus felt a little bit of this he acts Peter couldn't you just pray one but could it be God would never would hold from you what you need and could it be that some people got what you didn't get because God gave you what he didn't give them he gave them what he didn't give you because he gave you what he didn't give them and so they didn't have anybody to push them in the pool they wouldn't have made it but God put something on the inside of you God knew you would make it anyway and sometimes you're complaining about not having help not realizing the miracle of doing it without it you don't have help but look at you you survive you're making it you're accomplishing it don't let what you don't have you from celebrating what you do have you're doing it without it and I'm done and last but not least he had to get over his misery from missed moments see for thirty-eight years if he had a son he couldn't play catch for 38 years if his daughter got married he couldn't walk her down that house for 38 years there were missed moments and opportunities he had to let pass him by and he had missed moments because of things he couldn't control choices he didn't make but sometimes we have missed moments and we have misery regret over choices we did make and we say God if I could go back 10 years if I could undo that if I could undo this oh I would a parents are different they oh I would have done this differently oh I just got so much regret the Bible calls that condemnation it's prison your past can be a prison or school you pick we done listen this man took up his bed and walked what does it teach us the only way to overcome or troublesome path has passed is to make a decision to create an amazing future listen to me to be like Joseph who had a traumatic experience at home but it gets to Egypt and he gets married and he gives birth to two children ephraim and manasseh and he any named his son Manasseh because he said you have made me to forget all the pain of my father's house in other words he says what I've given birth to in my present it's so beautiful that it overrides the pain of my past one time I asked a friend of mine something who was going through quit going through a season some someone I knew was going through and I couldn't relate and I was trying to minister to this to this person and I asked him I said what did that feel like how did you get through that and this is what he said to me I'll never forget it he said I'm in such an amazing season now he said I remember that it hurt but I don't remember the pain why because I've given birth to Manasseh and you can give birth to a season that is so amazing and so beautiful and so God ordained that you will look back at your past and you will say I remember that it hurt but I don't remember the pain and that's all predicated on your willingness to get up and your willingness to not settle and your willingness to make a decision that the rest of my life will be the best of my life I will not stay stuck I will get up get up with tears in my eyes I'll get up with a broken heart I'll get up confuse I'll get up so father I pray now in Jesus name for a second win you said times of refreshing come from you breathe on your people is what you do during revival breathe on them give them the grace to get up and I pray as a result of this night lives changed destinies altered purpose fulfilled cities won and may it be said of us as it was said of the early church these are they that have turned the world upside down [Applause]
