as you can see however there are uh distancing and safety regulations in place due to the ongoing pandemic [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] is [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] is [Applause] [Music] and the holy father approaches the altar to venerate it and we'll begin the mass with the insensation oh [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign so [Music] oh so [Music] after the potential right we sing the gloria [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] is oh is [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] very young is almighty and ever-living god direct our actions according to your good pleasure that in the name of your beloved son we may abound in good works through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and drains with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of nehemiah ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly consisting of men women and children old enough to understand this was the first day of the seventh month on the square before the watergate in the presence of the men and women and children old enough to understand he read from the book from early morning to noon all the people listened attentively to the book of the law ezra described stood on a wooden dice erected for the purpose in full view of all the people since he stood higher than other people ezra opened the book and when he opened it all the people stood up then ezra bless the lord the great god and all the people raised their hands and answered amen amen then they bowed down and faced to the ground prostrated themselves before the lord and ezra read from the law of god translating and giving the sense so that the people understood what was read then nehemiah his excellency an extra priest and scribe and the levite who were instructing the people said to other people this day is sacred to the lord your god do not be mournful do not weep for the people were all in tears as they listened to the voice of the law he then said go eat the fat drink the sweet wine and send a portion to the man who has nothing prepared ready for this day it's sacred to our lord do not be sad the joy of the lord is your stronghood [Music] the responsorial psalm is from psalm 18. your words o lord are spirit and life is the response [Music] me [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] things [Music] foreign [Music] foreign is [Music] the second reading is taken from saint paul's letter first letter to the corinthians brothers and sisters as a body is one through it though it has many parts and all the parts of the body though many are one body so also christ for in one spirit we were all baptized into one body whether jews or greeks slaves or free persons and we were all given to drink of one spirit now the body is not a single part but many if a foot should say because i am not a hand i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body or if near should say because i am not an eye i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body if the whole body were an eye where would the hearing be if the whole body were hearing where would the sense of smell be but as it is that god placed the parts each one of them in the body as he intended if they were all one part where would the body be but as it is there are many parts yet one body the eye cannot say to the hand i do not need you nor again the head to the feet i do not need you indeed the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety whereas our more presentable parts do not need this but god has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it so that there may be no division in the body but the parts may have the same concern for one another if one part suffers all the parts suffer with it if one part is honored all the parts share its joy now your christ's body and individually parts of it some people god has designated in the church to be first apostles second prophets third teachers then mighty deeds then gifts of healing assistance administration and varieties of tongues are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers do all work mighty deeds do all have gifts of healing do all speak in tongues do all interpret [Music] in [Music] me the gospel acclamation is taken from the gospel of saint luke [Music] chapter 4 verse 18 the lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives [Music] and after charging the thoroughbould the holy father places his blessing over the deacon who will read today's gospel from luke's trap for from the first chapter of st luke versus one to four and then from the fourth chapter versus 14 to 21. [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] oh [Music] dominus vobiscum foreign so [Music] [Music] since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us i too have decided after investigating everything accurately anew to write it down in an orderly sequence for you most excellent theophilus so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received returned to galilee in the power of the spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region he taught in their synagogues and was praised by allah he had grown up and went accordingly to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day he stood up to read and was handed the scroll of the prophet isaiah he unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written the spirit of the lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor he has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the lord [Music] rolling up the scroll he handed it back to the attendant and sat down and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him he said to them today this scripture passage is fulfilled [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] verbum domini [Music] the deacon now brings the book of the gospels over to the holy father where he will bless all of those gathered in the basilica this morning with the word of god [Music] and now the holy father will pronounce his homily for this third sunday of ordinary time uh however first in this liturgy we will have the institution of the new ministers of lecture and catechists those to be instituted in the ministry of rector please come forward and the newly instituted electors will respond present you campania [Music] those to be instituted in the ministry of catechist please come forward and again the candidates respond presently regina de souza silva ekomi m and after the people who will be installed as lectures and catechists have been called by name and respond present the holy father will now give the homily in the first reading and in the gospel we find two parallel acts ezra the priest lifts up the book of the law of god opens it and reads it aloud before the people jesus in the synagogue of nazareth opens the scroll of the sacred scripture and reads passage of the prophet isaiah in the presence of allah speak to us of a fundamental reality at the heart of the life of god's holy people and our journey of faith are not ourselves and our words at its heart our god and his everything started with the word that god spoke to us in christ his eternal word the father chose us before the foundation of the world by that word he created the universe he spoke and it came to be from of old he spoke to us through the prophets and finally in the fullness of time he sent us that same word his only begotten son that is why in the gospel after reading from isaiah jesus says something completely unexpected today this scripture has been fulfilled fulfilled the word of god is no longer a promise but is now fulfilled and jesus it is taken flesh by the power of the holy spirit it has come to dwell among us and it desires to continue to dwell in our midst in order to fulfill our expectations and to heal our wounds brothers and sisters let us keep our gaze fixed on jesus like those in the synagogue of nazareth and let us embrace this word today let us reflect on two interconnected aspects of this the word reveals god and the word leads us to many first the word reveals god jesus at the beginning of his mission commenting on the words of the prophet isaiah announces a clear decision he has come to liberate the poor and the oppressed in this way precisely through the scriptures he reveals the face of god as one who cares for our poverty and takes to heart our destiny the lord is not a master aloof and on high no he's not that but rather a father who follows our every step he is no called bystander detached and impassable he is god with us is about our lives and engaged in them even sharing our tears he is no neutral and indifferent god but the spirit the lover of mankind who defends us counsels us defends us sustains us and partakes of our pain this is the good news that jesus proclaims to the amazement of all god is close and he wants to care for me and for you for everyone this is a trait of god closeness he is defined in this way and he reminds us that uh god is has chosen to be the god uh and we are his people he is close to us he wants to relieve the burdens to crush you to warm your wintry coldness to brighten your daily dreariness and to support your faltering steps this he does by his word by the word he speaks to rekindle hope amid the ashes of your fears to help you rediscover joy in the labyrinth of your sorrows to fill with hope your feelings of solitude to go out not stuck in a maze but to go out every day brothers and sisters let us ask ourselves do we bear within our hearts this liberating image of god hope and joy what is the face of god that we proclaim in the church the savior who liberates and heals or the dread one who burns us with feelings of guilt in order to convert us to the true god jesus shows us where to start from his word that word by telling us the story of god's love for us liberates us from the prayer from the fears and preconceptions about him that stifled the joy of our faith that word overthrows false idols unmasks our projections destroys our all-too-human images of god and brings us back to see his true faith his true face his his mercy the word of god nurtures and renews faith let us put it back at the center of our prayer and of our spiritual life at the center our work the word the word that uh makes god close or it reveals that god is we overcome the temptation to shut ourselves up in a religiousity reduced to external worship one that fails to touch and transform our lives that's the kind of idolatry god's word drives us to go forth from ourselves and to encounter our brothers and sisters only with the quiet power of god's liberating love that is exactly what jesus shows us in the synagogue of nazareth he's been sent forth to the poor and we're all poor or to officiate at some religious ceremony rather he has descended to the streets of our world in order to encounter our wounded humanity to caress faces furrowed by suffering to bind up broken hearts and set us free from chains that imprison the soul in this way he shows us the worship most pleasing to god caring for our neighbor in the church there's temptation to rigidity rigid proposals we have to think this is not god our god is not like this brothers and sisters the word of god changes us the word of god does so by penetrating our soul like a sword if on the one hand it consoles us by showing us the face of god on the other it challenges and disturbs us reminding us of our inconsistencies it puts us in crisis it does not bring us peace at the price of accepting a world rent by injustice where the price is always paid by the weakest always by the weakest god's word puts us in crisis challenges the self-justification that makes us blame everything that goes wrong on other persons and situations the word of god hide behind the complexity of problems behind the excuse that nothing can be done about it or what can i do yours just to act to combine worship of god and care for man for sacred scripture has not been given to us for our entertainment to coddle us with an angelic spirituality but to make us go forth and encounter others drawing near to their wounds the holy father says another temptation of the church is this angelic spirituality which is kind of gnosticism god's word does not remove us from life but plunges us into life into everyday life and to listening to the sufferings of others and to listen to the suffering of others in the cry of the poor into the violence and injustice that wound society and our world it challenges us as christians not to be indifferent but active creative and prophetic prophetic christians today says jesus the scripture has been fulfilled the word wishes to take flesh today and the times in which we are living not in some ideal future a french mystic of the last century who chose to experience the gospel in the peripheries wrote that the word of god is not a dead letter it is spirit and life the listening that the word of the lord demands of us is our today the circumstances of our daily life and the needs of our neighbor let us ask ourselves then do we want to imitate jesus to become ministers of liberation and consolation for others do we want to actuate the word are we a church that is docile to the word a church inclined to listen to others engaged in reaching out to raise up our brothers and sisters from all that oppresses them to endure the nazi fear to liberate those most vulnerable persons from the prisons of poverty from interior on we and the sadness disciples life do we want to do this in the celebration some of our brothers and sisters will be instituted as lectures and catechists they are called to the important work of serving the gospel of jesus of proclaiming him so that his consolation his joy and his liberation can reach everyone that is also the mission of each one of us to be credible messengers to be prophets of god's word in the world consequently let us grow passionate about sacred scripture let us be willing to dig deep within the word that reveals god's newness and leads us tirelessly to love others let's put the word of god at the center of the church's life and pastoral activity and thus will be freed from rigidity let us listen to that word at the center of our the church's life and pastoral activity let's listen to it let's pray with it and let's put it into practice the words of our holy father now we'll have a moment of silence and then we'll have the institution of the electors and catechists and we'll reflect in silence on the readings and on the homily of our holy father pope francis and the ceremony for the institution of the new ministers of the electorate and of the catechist ministry we'll begin with the institution of new lectures that right is a rate that was reformed after the second vatican council it's been adapted now slightly as it is now open since the decision of the holy father last year not only to men but also to women and the people who will be instituted as lectures are now brought before the holy father through his son who became man for us god the father has revealed the mystery of salvation and brought it to fulfillment jesus christ made all things known to us and then entrusted his church with the mission of preaching the gospel to the whole world as readers and bearers of god's word you will assist in this mission and so take on a special office within the christian community you will be given a responsibility in the service of the faith which is rooted in the word of god you will proclaim that word in the liturgical assembly instructs children and adults in the faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments worthily you will bring the message of salvation to those who have not yet received it thus with your help men and women will come to know god the father and his son jesus christ whom he sent and so be able to reach eternal life in proclaiming god's word to others accept it yourselves in obedience to the holy spirit meditate on it constantly so that each day you will have a deeper love of the scriptures and in all you say and do show forth to the world our savior jesus christ christian and then you we can see that everybody in the basilica is standing whilst those to be instituted as lectures kneel down and the holy father's inviting us to pray brothers and sisters let us ask god our father to bless these servants who have been chosen for the ministry of reader let us proclaim that they may be faithful to the work entrusted to them proclaim god to the world and so give glory to our father in heaven and we pray briefly in silence for the new vectors you send your only son the word of life to reveal to mankind the mystery of your love bless these our brothers and sisters who have been chosen for the ministry of lector grant that as they meditate constantly on your word they may grow in its wisdom and faithfully proclaim it to your people we ask this through christ our lord and the candidates will now come up to the holy father one by one having remembered that they have been called by name and they will come to receive the bible from the holy father and as they they do so he will say to each one of them take this book of holy scripture and be faithful in handing on the word of god so that it may grow strong in the hearts of his people amen amen [Music] amen [Music] amen amen [Music] [Music] and now the candidates for catechist stand before the holy father the right is very similar and was produced just this past year for catechists which is a new ministry instituted by the holy father dear sons and daughters our lord jesus christ before returning to the father commanded his disciples to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth from the day of pentecost the church enlivened by the holy spirit has remained faithful to this command in every place each time and has transmitted the faith through the word and example of innumerable witnesses the holy spirit continues to enrich the church with the variety of its gifts for the common good of all every baptized person has an active part in the life and to action of the church and how they participate in the mission of christ was priest prophet and king among them some receive a particular call to exercise those ministries that the church has instituted now you who already strive actively for the christian community are called to the permanent ministry of catechist in order to live more intensely the apostolic spirit on the example of those men and women who helped paul and the other apostles to spread to the gospel may your ministry be always rooted in a profound life of prayer built upon healthy doctrine and animated by a true absolute passion may you bring people closer to the church who perhaps live far from it may cooperate with generous dedication in communicating the word of god may you constantly cultivate the sense of the local church of which the parish is similar to the cell witnesses of faith leaders and mystics companions and teachers who educate in the name of christ you will be called to collaborate with ordained ministers in various forms of apostolates and to be jointly responsible in the mission by christ to the church be always ready to respond to whoever asks you for a justification of the hope which is in you and now the candidates kneel while the assembly rises and the holy father gives a blessing my dear brothers and sisters let us beg god our father to fill those whom he has elected to the ministry of catechists with his blessing and to confirm them sustained by the grace of baptism to the faithful search to the faithful service of their local church we pray briefly for the candidates oh father who make us participants in the mission of christ your son and with the variety of gifts of the spirit you provide to your church bless these your sons and daughters elected to the ministry of catechists make them live out their baptism to the full through collaborating with pastors and various forms of the apostolate for the growth of your kingdom through christ our lord and now the catechists will receive the symbol of their office receive this sign of our faith the foundation of the truth and charity of christ announce him with your life actions and word and the holy father will bestow a crucifix on each of the new catechists amen [Music] amen as we mentioned the office of catechist is new the holy father instituted the ministry specifically as a ministry in this past year of course the ministry of catechist has existed in the church from the very beginning of the church's life and now it is given a new form by pope francis and was instituted as specifically a lay ministry the right for the institution of catechus was produced this year by the congregation for divine worship and discipline of the sacraments the text of the right has been uh promulgated in latin the italian version that's being used today was approved by the holy father at experimentum and only for use in this celebration we do expect that the translation of the right into the various modern languages will be coming in the near future coming i mean and with the institution of the electors and catechists we continue now with the recitation in common of the creed [Music] ah [Music] me [Music] oh foreign [Music] i is [Music] is is [Music] peace [Music] oh [Music] r [Music] is oh um [Music] [Music] raise up
