more beautiful than us studying english and looking at listening skills we're going to be looking at some different skills for developing listening for detail listening for just a little bit lots of ideas suggestions and a few kind of resources that you may want to look at as well excellent i'm very very happy to be here as always let me just put up there we go listening skills today we'll be doing listening skills today and then on thursday we'll go back and do some question practice from the ielts speaking questions so first of all a very good morning to you i hope you're well as always i'm very well i'm glad to see you here i'll just say a quick few hellos to stu sanvin abi lasha gorbej annis anna amner all the a's how come all the a's have come in first have you are you coming in facebook and from youtube as well um it is quite overwhelming because there are a lot of comments come through very quickly so if i do miss you don't worry i can see you i know you're there and the important thing is we're all here to study and improve right fantastic so good morning for you for you no good morning to you i don't have any red dates today no marijuana um i have normal tea i have british tea and you're thinking what on earth what on earth is british tea there is no such thing well we take the tea from other countries we put it in these little bags we have little bags and then we put we put the bag in here and then to make it worse we put milk into it now i know a lot of countries don't like milk tea but some countries really like milk tea i'm a big fan of milk tea personally great good right some hellos from everybody great great nice well we've got people from armenia pakistan amna from pakistan um goga from armenia and i'm from marillo pakistan brilliant excellent excellent from all over the world excellent and prince from india good now um i'm going to move on today we're going to look at listening skills right before we do first of all as always i would just like to say a huge thank you to people who have made a donation to help support my work thank you very much to uh gma sunsani rank rang son clara colon colonies thank you maria cornyeva and gauze lee thank you very much all of you really really do appreciate it it makes a big difference excellent so listening skills hmm right you know i was racking my brains right thinking how do i take a subject as big as listening skills and teach it in one hour and the answer was i can't um so i've taken several aspects of listening skills that we will look at today um and i will try to give you some practice some tips some strategies and some resources to help you develop the skills we may have to come back to listening skills because it's such a big topic right people write whole books about it so there's so much to say um but i'll try and guide you through some basic ideas that might might help and of course i'm i'm gonna try and connect it to ielts but really you should think beyond ielts with listening skills it's the same with reading right yes you need to know the exam technique but i don't really want to just teach you exam technique i'm thinking more the wider listening skills to help your english generally get better the key really with both reading and listening is variety right variety is really what you need and just to make that clear for you because some people go what does it mean variety what is variety um variety is this word over here right variety so what i mean is variety is lots of different things listen to as much and as many different kinds of things as possible right don't always listen to the bbc or if you like voice of america don't only always listen to voice of america right mix it up variety change so listen to different accents because you must get used to australian canadian british american listen to different accents listen to different speeds right some people are fast some people are slow listen to everything listen to different topics right listen to things about the environment listen to the news listen to chat shows watch some cooking programs or listen to some poetry variety many different kinds of things listen to different levels and i think this is a big mistake people make is they think oh i'm at a band six level i will listen to kind of stuff at my level band six no don't listen to stuff below your level because that builds your fluency in listening right there is such a thing yes listen to stuff at your level and listen to stuff above your level you need to be challenged right it's really important and it leads me to my second most important point is be comfortable with not understanding everything right and i'm going to write that down so i think it's so important i'm going to write that down over here where it says variety come away mr variety and come in this one i have to make it bigger i have to change the color guys a military operation and then take the underlining off seriously not easy to do so be comfortable not understanding everything it's really important if you're trying to understand everything and look for words you don't get it's not going to work you'll get depressed and fed up right and if you only listen to simple things that you understand it's not going to help right it's an important part of listening skill development that you don't understand everything okay so that's a really really key thing right let me join back into you guys what are you saying over here lots of phrases and idioms viewers gave i can't remember them all ah right in my speaking well there are a few rack my brains remember that one right rack my brains is to think carefully about something i'll throw it in for you just so you can have it as well pronunciation is difficult for me to understand about what they're saying with different accents right it's a good point lucille um but that's really important to listen to different accents um it is hard it depends who you're speaking to because if you're speaking to a non-native speaker depending on their level their pronunciation may be accurate or not um if you're in if it's for speaking practice it doesn't matter but if it's just for listening practice you want high level proficient speakers and get used to all different accents brilliant listening to audio stories some people like yep audio stories are great and i think that's really important right is that you listen to a variety of things and also not just passive listening but also active listening right so what do i mean by that let me just write this down to help you get it clear you need active and passive listening listen listening right active and passive listening so passive listening is where the radio is on in the background right and you're cooking away and you're looking at your recipe book and you're flipping your egg your fried egg in the morning and you're listening a little bit to the radio or maybe you're you're kind of reading a book and you've got the radio playing or your podcast and you're listening passively it's kind of in the background that's fine right it's an english environment but also active listening active is where you have something playing maybe a podcast or the tv or youtube hi and you only do that that's your only focus and you're actively listening to understand what they're saying the details the main idea the whole idea you're actively engaged in understanding you need to do both right okay great um temez again writing and reading skills i'm not sure possibly i'm doing listening because i think listening is key to speaking right it's it's it's really important for the speaking test that you understand but i think listening and uh listening and speaking are kind of intertwined brother and sister they're so closely connected okay um let's see any other questions mr variety right kastab is talking about how to work our way through distractors now you're talking about the examine exam technique there right so let's come in and let's have a look at some specific stuff right so let me um come in here [Music] so first of all we're going to look at listening for detail okay there are two things right just to be clear when it comes to listening skills we tend to think about or talk about or teach two things right we teach listening for detail and listening for gist listening for detail as it sounds is when you listen for detail like you're listening for a name for a phone number um for a specific street name or some kind of detail right listening for just the gist is the main idea the general idea right so you can hear somebody or somebody rabbiting okay i get the gist right the main idea is they're angry they're angry that's the main idea right i don't understand all the words i don't speak about language but i get the gist right i get the main idea so the gist is the main idea so you need to be able to do both right and they're two different skills um we're going to look first of all listening to detail and i'm going to break down the language a bit here and get a bit technical um but let's have a look right let's have a look so um let's take the first my first bit of advice right i'm gonna show this on my um let me see [Music] let me show this here i'm just going to make it bigger so you can see it okay let me take that away and let me bring in my notes okay let me move it across i hope you can see that oh come back oh you're kidding me come back this is so annoying why does the macbook think i've got two desktops i've got one desktop it's so annoying i love macbooks but sometimes they annoy me so much so that's it great so the macbook has just stolen my it's just stolen my word document oh unbelievable seriously unbelievable right bear with me oh for f flippity-flippity-sake right what'd you do in times of technical problems turn everything off turn that off come back up right sorry guys i really really am sorry i've got no idea what my macbook is doing intelligent far from it far from it right i'm just gonna have to close it i'm really sorry this is so annoying not only for me but for you right no but this is still they're in opposite that's so strange i've got no idea right just right i've lost my my my computer has just eaten all of my notes do you know like when you go to school and you say sir sir teacher teacher teacher the dog at my homework and the teacher goes oh yeah oh yeah seriously the computer just at all of my notes they just got they've completely gone they've gone into like a parallel world and i can kind of see them but i can't see them i've got no idea what to do maybe i have to turn you off do i have to deactivate my desktop let's deactivate my desktop ah ah ah i think we are getting there thank you steve jobs and all of you are apple right oh hilarious and you guys are thinking not hilarious come on get your act together get your act together right so where are my notes these are not the right notes okay we're almost there we're almost there dun done the watch count has gone down to holy moly people have came totally fed up that's it i'm leaving i'm going to vote with my feet you know the expression vote with my feet i'm going to vote with my feet means i'm going to leave i'm going to vote with my feet it's a great expression right you do that have you ever been in um in a restaurant right and you're in the restaurant and you're waiting for the food and you're waiting and waiting and then you get so fed up you say that's it i'm leaving i'm going to vote with my feet which means i'm going to walk out basically i'm going to walk out listen let me get rid of me that's better okay i'm going to vote with my feet i'm going to leave and i wouldn't be surprised if all of you have voted with your feet so listening for detail right this is what we're going to look at first so my first tip number one was be comfortable not understanding everything okay that's fair enough number two right is use context and activate schemata now i know this is a teaching word and it means nothing but first of all context so context are if you're watching a video or you're looking at some no if you're watching a video or a film use the pictures and the context to help you understand if you're listening to an audio or a podcast use the text now that might be the transcript or in the ielts it might be the questions right use the text to help you and activate schemata use your prior knowledge prior means previous knowledge okay use your previous knowledge so what do i mean by that well i mean the following right then let me take let me take this one okay so i'm going to show you a picture okay easier said than done but i am going to go and try i am going to try and show you a picture here's my picture here's my picture hey look at that it works right so this is from ielts it's part one of the listening okay now when you see this um let's take it down a little bit here are the questions right transport from bayswater number one express train leaves at nearest station is so here the topic is clear right the context this context is telling us it's about transport specifically about train bus stations now activating schemata or is is thinking about what do i know about transport right what do i know about transport so i mean here what do i know about this topic language wise and knowledge wise for example right i know different means of transport i know there's train i know there's bus there's coaches so what else do i know right let me ask you guys what else do we know about transport let's see what you've got right brilliant good got some good ideas here so we know also metro roots fantastic um airways and there's another one fairy plain where's the ferry we had ferry up here you're moving too fast taxi brilliant some nice language then okay so you're thinking about language fantastic departure time station numbers ticket okay this is exactly what you need to do you're thinking about related vocabulary and ideas to this topic right brilliant good types of transport ship maybe absolutely shuttle is good and so this is good because all of these words right might come up so let me bring in this one here what do we know about this so we've got for example let me take this down up up up up up make it better okay so we know we might be talking about take me away we might be talking about um trains coaches buses ferries express trains right we know that trains leave from platforms and we know that ferries leave from terminals right we also know that when we talk about train times we use the official 24-hour clock we say 1605. we don't say oh five past four right when you listen to the loud speaker it doesn't say the train will leave at five past four no no no no the loudspeaker says the train will leave actually he goes the next train from paddington will leave at 16.05 it uses official times right we know there are things like peak times and off peak times things like destination so all of this we call if you're a teacher schemata basically schemata is what i already already know and this is really useful when you're listening right it can really really help you because it's preparing you for the listening fantastic yeah i know you've probably done this test many many times i know because it's in the uh the official british council book um website but bear with me because we're gonna break it down so that's the first step that's really really useful and a good step to take with that thingy there right okay so now let's go back to that um that question right where was it here it is so listen what we're going to do is we're going to listen and i want you to just do the first question right which is this one here express train leaves at we're going to listen you're going to get the answer but then i'm going to help you really listen to everything listen to details okay so that's the question if you can make a note of that that would be really good otherwise i can help you i can help you with this right hang on a moment let's write it out okay so i'm going to put it on the screen that will make it easier i think okay and we're going to listen so this is the uh this comes from the ielts by the way it comes from here let me show you where it's from it's here from ielts take can you see that take ielts british council it's one of their practice tests you must have probably already listened to this um so where is it here it is right and it starts around two minutes listen carefully and then we're gonna do a bit of an analysis of what's actually going on here right okay let's have a listen good morning travel link how can i help you good morning i live in bayswater and i'd like to get to harbour city tomorrow before 11am well to get to bayswater no no i live in bay's water my destination is harbour city sorry right so that's bayswater to harbour city are you planning to travel by bus or train i don't mind really whichever option is faster i suppose well if you catch a railway express that'll get you there in under an hour let's see yes if you can make the 9 30 a.m express i'd recommend you do that great which station does that leave from helendale is the nearest train station to you right okay excellent so here i am again did you get the answer let's see what the answer was piece of cake right absolute piece of cake for you guys oh not for everybody right okay you're almost there right well done most of you yes well done oh most of you i say most of you not everybody but most of you okay um that was it the train express train leaves at 9 30 a.m right at 9 30 a.m so it's the official time right not 9 30 but nine sorry not 9 30 at 9 30 a.m not half past 9 but at 9 30. so our knowledge of times helped us get the answer our knowledge of express trains different kinds of trains can also help us now i'm going to go back and break down some of the language that came up there to help focus on our general listening skills okay so here we are let's have a look first of all at this so first of all i'm going to look at word stress okay come back keith come back word stress what i'd like you to do is i'm going to say one of the phrases from the listening and i want you to write down the stressed words right so we're looking at the stressed words the words with emphasis if you like so in my sentence just type down which words are the stressed words okay listen carefully that'll get you there in under an hour write it down the stressed words one more time that'll get you there in under an hour only the stressed words right that'll get you there in under an hour that'll get you there in under an hour there under hour right there under hour that'll get you there in under an hour let me show you i'll try and make this a bit bigger so it's clearer for you okay that'll get you there in under an hour in is not stressed and is not stressed the most stressed is hour right that'll get you there in under an hour but i think also there is stressed that'll get you there in under an hour there hour so word stress it's actually called sentence stress but i think that's confusing i'm going to call it word stress which words are stressed in the sentence is a really key skill right that you need to develop so when you listen um when you're listening to your audios and your podcast don't worry too much about every word but you must pick up these stressed words right that'll get you there in under an hour and that is going to help you the next thing is to look at the chunks now we looked at chunks the other day if you remember when we did talked about fluency we also looked at chunks and chunks are pieces of language let me take this up for you chunks let me take it down maybe okay chunks are pieces of language right and it's when it's when you focus on the sound okay so the most important thing when you're listening is the sounds not the words so because you know that'll get you there in under an hour how many words how many words is that i've got no idea how many words and if you're trying to listen to that will get you there that's not how we speak how do we speak we say that'll get you there that'll get you there that's your chunk and that's what you need to be training to be listening for chunks right and a good way of doing it is just to listen and repeat the chunks right a great place to do this and i i is the fluency gym because the fluency gym does this and the reason it does this is because i think it's so important the fluency gym will help you do this and i will put a link later to the fluency gym if you have not been to the fluency gym get your kit sorted and get ready to go to the fluency gym let's just do this then let's practice the chunk right so with me i want you to say i'll do it slowly and then quickly so repeat with me that will get you there that'll get you there again that will get you there that'll get you there that'll get you there now close your eyes and just listen that'll get you there that'll get you there that'll get you there it's a strange sound right this is what you need to do here's the next one in under an hour try in under an hour in under an hour in under an hour in under an hour what a strange sound here are the chunks okay um and that's it so you can check out stuff like this in the fluency gym if you've not been to the fluency gym why not why not he says let me show you the fluency gym i'll show you where it is very very briefly and then you can go and check it out if you come to the website right and if you go to um top tips up here the fluency gym is here this is ielts speaking success and if you go in there oh i'm very slow today aren't i on loading um you come here you get it's the improve your english fluency it's about fluency but it's all about repeating sounds and playing with sounds so you can watch you can listen and you can just read at the same time if you like um but that is one thing that you you can practice doing right is the fluency gym coming back to my notes then chunks so the other really important thing to pick up on which we did a bit last time um is this one is weak forms right now then i'm going to bring this up weak forms and abbreviations let's make it all bigger now i talked about weak forms last time and this is where the words the small words in english that um are not stressed so when you is not stressed like that'll get you there right remember we said there is stressed so this is not stressed then we don't say you no no no no no we say yeah that'll get you there and the stress falls on the next word that'll get you there so listening for weak forms is key abbreviations right instead of saying that will when we speak we rarely say that will right unless you're emphasizing so again if you're not emphasizing it's thattle that's all what a great word that's all can you say that's all that's will get you there so you've got your abbreviation right that's all you've got your weak form yeah you've got your stressed word that'll get you there that'll get you there and your chunk it's all what makes it work right it's all super important the chunk the weak form the abbreviation or con sorry i should call it contraction contraction like that will that's all and the last one which is really important is connected speech and to understand listening in english you must practice connected speech so that's where basically when a word finishes in a consonant right consonant like and the next word begins with a vowel sound or a a e i o u or other vowel sounds um like this one consonant vowel then we connect so this is get ye this is in under inunda inunda this one under an hour the ra ran under an under and a good way to help you do this is to disconnect the words like this right to go to ge gear also here disconnected if it lets me [Music] the connection is making it in under an hour and that has probably totally confused most of you no let me make that just a bit clearer okay instead of saying under an okay say under ran that's what i'm trying to say right you take the consonant and the consonant joins the vowel ran under ran under ran under ran under ran under ran that's how you do it under ram this is pronunciation but it's what you need to get with your listening right okay great good i'm talking a lot i hope you're practicing yes i think you are i think you're still with me hello everyone hello great excellent now then um let's do something a little bit fun here because another really key thing is right is to train where's this it's over here train your memory processing time train your memory processing time okay um what i mean by that is in the the listening that we did when you have to listen for spelling or numbers you have to keep the information in your head and then write it down so we need to train to get better at this so here's a simple exercise for you right we're going to do it with numbers let's imagine weird numbers so i'm going to say some numbers for you and i want you to type in the number that i say all right get ready let's take this away okay eight four eight four confusion what's he saying i want you to write down ah hey oh that's interesting well done niyi fantastic pleased to hear it okay most of you have got it right um sunny got the answer eight four here's the next one seven two five three zahab that's quite funny about your changing pronunciation has anyone got it nobody's got it come on guys wake up oh good okay we've got it we've got it yeah great idana seven two five three it was seven two five three excellent the next one 901 5679 it's getting harder has anyone got it i know there's a delay oh now quite a few of you now that's not right quite a few of you have got this one that's not quite right not quite right right excellent go safa 901 5679 okay next one ready listen carefully 534-872403 oh there's very very close i think a lot of you have got very very close yes okay yeah okay sudeshna this was right exactly and the last one here's the last one six seven nine two one five four six two eight nine wow okay you're there you're there oh you're almost there no somebody had it oh no who's got it nobody's got it ah somebody's got it yes okay gel gel sam's got it six seven nine two one five four six two eight nine right okay so what's the point here why am i doing this okay the point is going back to what i said okay well done gel sam nice one um hey look i've got this isn't this great cool gel sam um this is training your memory processing time okay here were the answers um so this is difficult because when you get to listen to numbers or listen to spellings in the ielts listening you have to be able to remember large numbers and large number of letters and this is the pro the memory processing time so you need to train to make it longer and longer okay it's not good enough just to remember um seven numbers you want to remember as many as you can to listen and process so you can do what i've done here you just make recordings and practice right you can do simple recordings with yourself and practice or do it with letters as well as numbers okay very very simple let's move on oh do you know what it's time for a riddle it's riddle time let's do a riddle a little change of pace okay um here's the riddle for today right a few of you have asked for the riddle okay listen carefully this is a bit of a tough one but some of you will get it i have no doubt what occurs once in a minute twice in a moment and never in a thousand years what occurs or what happens once in a minute twice in a moment and never in a thousand years oh some of you are so clever oh very clever well done well done diana gaustap gulnas sonita benita what occurs what occurs once in a minute twice in a moment and never in a thousand years i think a lot of you have got the answer well done sharifah kisly well done i will show you the answer right and you'll realize you'll kick yourself when you see the answer okay once in a minute get rid of me once it's the letter m it's the letter m of course right once in a minute twice in a moment and never in a thousand years there's no m here one two never oh there's the riddle there you go well done guys lots of you got that well done excellent now then let's move on um so i'm gonna do i've actually we've talked about word stress chunks abbreviation things like that i'm gonna do next some practice on that okay um or oh wait a minute wait a minute shall we do practice on that or shall we move on to the next point no i'm going to move on to the next point we can do some practice we can do some practice at another moment i think at the moment i'm going to give you more knowledge more knowledge i'm gonna look at some um practice techniques and some interesting things for you okay now i talked at the start about listening to sounds and i think when you're practicing uh focus on listening listening to sounds rather than reading okay so always listen first that said it is good to have the text or we call it the transcript if you have the transcript for an audio it is good the second time to listen and read because then you can make the connection between the word and the sound and you can really pick out connected speech weak forms uh chunks things like that right um so i think transcripts are really good um there are two places well several places i know i'll give you three right now where you can look at transcripts the first one of course is youtube right if you go into youtube let me show you um where where where where youtube um let's see okay notes i'll try and show you on youtube here let's say for example i don't know something on climate change we want to listen to something on climate change so when you go to youtube this is what you can do did you know right if you go to filter in youtube you can go to filter and then look at the features and in the features oh did you see that sorry that was too fast in the features here subtitles right subtitles click on subtitles this gives you all the videos that have subtitles right because on youtube they don't all have subtitles but then all of these now you know are going to have subtitles oh i always get this the same ad every time i don't know why since the industrial revolution here we go so humans have released over 1.5 trillion tons of carbon dioxide co2 into the earth's atmosphere in the year 2019 we were still pumping out around 37 billion more [Music] right we were pumping out 37 billion more did you know that if you press the j on your keyboard the j it goes back five seconds of carbon dioxide or co2 into the earth's atmosphere into the earth's atmosphere since the industrial revolution humans have released over 1.5 trillion tons of carbon dioxide or co2 into the earth's atmosphere right i'm just pressing j again and now i can do the subtitles watch it a second time since the industrial revolution humans have released over 1.5 trillion tons of carbon dioxide or c trillion tons of did you notice connected speech tons of tons of and the of becomes of weak form tons of carbon dioxide into the earth's atmosphere co2 into the earth's atmosphere anyway that's the point right so youtube co uco2 subtitles that's the first one we can look at the next one is ted talks and you're probably familiar with ted talks but ted talks are fantastic because well they have transcripts so if you go into ted talks it's ted.com all of their videos and they've got great topics right um the day of da da da have a path to higher education employment for refugees you can go in and here's the great thing about it they've got the transcript down here which you can't see but so as you're listening right you can actually follow the transcript and it lights up it highlights it we'll have this fifth image in my mind i could see people falling down gunshots i was so terrified really i was crying a lot someone who knew my father and my mom grabbed my hand and he said let's go let's go let's go let's go so you can follow the transcript and make that connection so all of the videos here have that on ted excellent another great great source right of stuff for transcripts and the last one is actually um it's actually an app that i'm gonna recommend i actually use this right i use this for my chinese and it's called lingq and i quite like it um it's not for everybody but let me show you and i'll show you why i think i it's good um oh now then how do i get out link you when you go into link you hmm well you have to okay let me show you on on here just bear with me is it going to show me link u no no no it's not why is it not going to show me it's not going to show this browser oh no that's a shame it's on a different browser surely there's a way of doing this there probably is but i haven't learned how to do it we're having a great day with technology today aren't we great day dear oh dear well i might have to show you show scenes window you've seen i might have to show you another day oh that's a shame it's not letting me show you anyway it's called lingq go and check it out it's it's pretty good i think let me take that off and i'll show you over here uh okay notes linq simple as that link you link you dot com basically and it's an app you can you obviously you sign up for free um i've always used it for free but i think you can pay for it as well for extra features um and it has transcripts and basically it has the transcript and you listen and you get the dictionary and you're you're able to analyze connected speech weak forms everything it's great for your listening and your speaking i've really enjoyed it and i've used it for my for my chinese as i said i was going to show you my rubbish chinese now my great chinese but i can't okay i'm aware of the time i'm just going to finish up with a few suggestions right at the very very end and i realize this is a whistle stop tour this has been really really fast um but here are just a few things to end up with right so i would suggest listening to all levels right listen to material lower than your level as well as mixing with stuff at your level okay i think that's really um important because lower level helps your fluency it builds your confidence if you want to get connected speech listen to stuff below your level the guys at british council right they have got all of this stuff in different levels it's great i think the bbc as well right the bbc do the same um but when you go into the the british council stuff here let me show you right whether you're a beginner a1 pre-intermediate or intermediate upper intermediate or advanced this is all their listening stuff you can just say okay today i'm going to do some easy stuff and i'm going to really focus on weak forms um you can choose something maybe an invitation to a party and then they've got some great stuff here i mean the british council really do bring out some great stuff you can just practice listening they've got the tape script as well so as i said if you want to check the tape script you can brilliant guys british council they are another level right they really are another level very very good um the other thing is also then to um listen at all speeds listen to fast stuff listen to slow stuff right so again there are some interesting um websites that have stuff like this there's cupid's i don't know if you know cupid's um oh let me show you hang on you can tell i was running out of time oh it's all going funny it's all going belly up oh where are you culips sorry that's the one culips no that's not the one is it no that's not the one or maybe it is it's changed oh it's changed since i was there last yes this is the one let me sorry let me include you me browsing without you for goodness sake um so this is the website is called qesl.qlips.com um and for listening they've got chatterbox english conversations at normal speed excellent great um simplified speech you've got what this one is is english everyday english while speaking slowly and clearly right um you've got real talk which is real situations at the normal speed um the speak easy which helps with uh pronunciation and listening so actually there's so much good listening stuff here you can take some of the tips from today and just go in to qlips and check it out there got some really nice nice content for you to look at okay i also think listen to slow english for confidence listen to fast english exactly focus on listening comprehension not learning new vocabulary comprehension yeah because a lot of people when they're doing listening they're focusing on vocabulary and trying to learn new vocabulary that's okay if you're learning vocabulary but if you're developing listening skills focus on listening skills don't start learning vocabulary just focus on listening fluency right also listen to intense english and ex intensive and extensive so intensive i mean short clips maybe three minutes or so right so practice that where you're being really intensive but also do extensive which is the long clips which are you know maybe 30 minutes or more like your podcasts or films you need really to do both of these do intensive and extensive right so those are a few different um tips and ideas that you can be doing and following now i realize we've tried to do an awful lot um and i've totally ignored you today i've just been talking let's let me come back and just see what you're saying um any other questions okay let's take a couple of questions just before we finish up right so we've got one from emmy my question is what's the difference between chunks and syllables okay a syllable is a part of a word um so let's take your name right emmy er me that's got two syllables right the chunk is a chunk of language so emi is happy we would say m is happy m is happy that's a chunk m is happy one chunk four syllables that's the difference nice question any other questions uh can you say which web zahab yes what i'll do at the end of the class sometime this afternoon i'll put all the links in the notes you can download it as always in the same place if you are here for the first time today let me just let you know you will need to go to go to my website right ielts speaking success.com click later go and click on the live lessons which is where you are now and from the live lessons you can then go and go through here you can make a donation if you want but you can hear you can download the notes from uh previous classes so if you download this because it's in chrome um it will then go here and then you get your notes right so you can download all the information the links are always in here as well as the vocabulary if it's a vocabulary lesson then you've got all your notes here so basically that's it ielts speaking success um go and download the stuff later right that's it what else um podcasts there are lists of podcasts on my website as well if you go if you want more resources i'm gonna send you again to my website oh dear um if you go to free right in the website at the top um there are here free resources for ielts there's the free books and use there you go useful podcasts you can go and check out the useful podcasts over there that which i love podcasts right i love them because you can download them um you can listen to them when you're walking around it's extensive listening it's really really good stuff okay um let's see any other questions as we finish up second question how can i improve my vocabulary i will do another session on vocabulary skills in the coming weeks okay oh right hala any about multiple choice any techniques oh i hate multiple choice i really hate it and everybody's going oh me too i hate it i think it's just oh it's one of the most overused exam techniques um and it's not great but i know it exists and it's used a lot um yeah a multiple choice technique yes always put c no don't i'm joking that was a joke no don't always put c um don't it's not you know with multiple choice it's not about technique there is no technique that can help you um other than okay in multiple choice right there are four answers i think you know this so two of them are always always clearly wrong they're just nonsense right so multiple choice really is about the other two there's only two that are possible one is the distractor that somebody talked about earlier and one is the right answer so really multiple choice you should be choosing between two not between one not between four between two um but really really then after that it's about your listening skill there's no technique can help you it's developing your listening skills for detail and for just to help you get better at understanding really i know that's that's not the answer you wanted but it's true uh say antana listen with headphones on absolutely yeah you get much better quality and you can hear much clearer clear much much clearer what language is that much more clearly coolness where can we watch your previous live streams um on the the thingy i just showed you um this one you've probably realized this already as we're speaking but this one right do you remember i said go to live lessons go to live lessons it's ielts speaking success um dot com they're there they're all there right you can go and watch them there they're not loading but they are there they're on youtube and they're on facebook any other questions just as we finish up rachel that's a good question beside your website um where can i get more material for fluency gym well i think i'm the only one who does the fluency gym and i'm making a full course so i think in august i will have the full course for the fluency gym coming out so you can go and practice then it might be too late for you i don't know which is right the second one the second one how can i get rid of nerves on the test day get rid of nerves on the test day there's a lot different things you can do [Music] visualization i don't know where to begin because there's so many things you can do and i think if you check out the the um the article or the blog post on confidence that i've done it's go to the website go to top tips and look for the confidence article it tells you about controlling nerves there's a lot about visualization where you imagine how you're going to be happy in the test and succeed and you do that before you go into the test the the big thing to know about the ielts test right is that the ielts examiners want you to succeed most of them right uh there are one or two bad apples maybe people who are a bit you know not very friendly and maybe that's just their personality maybe and if they don't help but most examiners right are trained professionals and like any interview like a job interview they want you to do your best to show you their best so most examiners are not trying to trap you or trick you they actually want to help you so just think about that remember that on test day this is somebody working with you to show your best english right they won't give you any tricks or answers but they want to work with you to help you show your best english so don't think of them as the enemy they're not right they're there to help you do your best okay good question nice anything else last question i realized we've gone on far too long um what else what else what else the udemy course yes it's been updated it's updated every four months yes okay guys i am going to rush off because it is quite late so listen thank you very much i hope some of the ideas today have helped you we've done a bit of practice um but we can do some more i might then i might make a video that helps you do more practice maybe a bit like the fluency gym video but on listening skills and we can do more of that keep your eyes open on youtube maybe in the next week or two i'll produce a listening video to help you do more practice after the class go not straight away but maybe three hours later or four hours later you can go and download the notes from today thank you very much for joining me i forgot to drink my tea iced tea great have a fantastic day and uh remember on thursday we're gonna go back and practice some part three ielts questions excellent have a lovely day take care bye
