you welcome to paws toolbox today I'm going to show you how to make a wall patch that is so strong a doorknob will not pop through it even if you slam the door now make sure you stick around to the end of the video because I'm going to be showing this Rockwell tool right here this drill and I'm going to give one away with a cool mandrel buy fast cap the only requirements of winning this is putting a comment in that way I know who to choose from so if you drop a comment at the very bottom of this video they'll have a comment section put a comment in and hit like if you don't mind and I will be giving one of these away from one of the people who comment a few years ago I redid this entire room and I scraped the popcorn ceilings off I have videos showing how to do that and how to get a smooth ceiling well when I did it on the back of the door I put one of these Stoppers it's a spring-loaded stopper to cut up slow the door down I also have a spring at the bottom down here this helps a lot but if it gets hit too hard that spring will give and you'll still pop a hole in your wall this is a simple fix all you would have to do is take some mud and trowel it right over that because the hole is not completely through here you can just fill it lightly sand it and put a little texture on it and paint it that's it don't tell my wife I did this this is a four inch hole saw and this one is a four and a quarter this is going to give you an exact four inch hole this one is going to give you an exact four and a quarter inch hole because you go by the outside diameter with this being an eighth of an inch thick and that's what the thickness is on your hole saws that's the thickness of the blade you will drill a four and a quarter inch hole in there but your plug is going to be four inches and that's the key to this you make a hole in your wall four inches and when you drill this out on the plywood it's going to be four inches and it's going to slip in there really tight I've been doing construction for over 25 years and a lot of mandrels have given me trouble on a job when you go to take the the hole saw off of it it will by and then you have a hard time getting the piece out of there well let me show you this one this is a fantastic mandrel and it's made by fastcap I actually met the inventor of it and he's a really cool guy he's very versed in construction and that's how he invented this you get inventions a lot of times from the people who do it because they're in that field and they know what the troubles that you have are and they learn how to fix it and that's how I came up with a lot of my inventions from trial and error on the job now this is how easy it is this is a quick release on here you take your mandrel you push it on the hole saw you turn it back a quarter turn and that's it it's locked in place when you go to remove it all you do is take that and turn it it pops right off and it'll pop your piece out real easy too we'll take the the larger one and drill out plug out pop it right off there's my plug I'm a previous video I showed how to make this template and this template is set up to where I can make my holes anywhere I want without having my pilot bit we're going to go ahead and drill a hole in here and this will be my template but this is fantastic when I bring it to different job sites or whatever I need it I don't have to worry about having a pattern I'll have all my patterns with them we'll take it we'll set it right in the center of my hole because you know that's where the center of the doorknob is and we're just going to put a couple of little screws in here to hold it in place two of them will do you can do all fours you want you just want to make sure this thing doesn't spin around so don't suck it into the wall and make it spin you want that threat the threads on this to hold it so I'm using coarse thread screws for this drywall are all purpose groups so now we can take this in reverse spin it a little bit [Music] [Applause] and then once it's in there you can go forward or you can just keep going and reverse it doesn't matter so I'll go in forward just to show you I'll get it running first before I hit the wall I'm right on the edge of a stud right here so I'm going to go ahead and clean it out now the center of this did not catch the stud but when I do this I'm going to be able to put a little block back here and run some screws in it and it's going to be super strong if you don't have a Sun back there it doesn't matter it's not going to hurt anything you're going to make it strong either way I use the same piece of plywood 1/2 of an inch thick and I cut a strip out of it this is 10 inches long in two inches wide you can go a little wider if you don't have a stud in the way like I do here but this is going to slip down in here and enable me to have something to back that plywood up with a plywood plug now I drill the hole in the center of here and that's so I can get this and hold it tight with my finger I will take and tie a little piece of string on to it so I don't lose my piece of wood down in there I left a little loop so I could just take my scissors and snip it when I'm ready now I'll drop it in and shove it down in there and if you don't have insulation it could fall through but it won't fall through now so make sure you get a good and snug right up against here I know I have plenty of room because I have a 10 inch piece so with this being 4 inches I've got 6 inches to play with it's going to go up and down 3 inches this is in the center I drilled a hole right in the center so I know where everything is I'll take my drywall screw set it up here about inch and 1/2 is 2 inches and start it do the same thing down here pull this back up get it right in position in the center of this now to have it tight I can sort it if you don't have something to really hold that tight like this hole to keep your finger in there it's going to push this will be hard to to get it all the way through just like you would if you have a hard piece of wood down there it's going to stop alright we're in a countersunk just a little bit on there take my scissors snip it off I'm using power grip I lock tight this is an excellent product I don't deal with Loctite but I will tell you I use this a lot it's a water-based product it doesn't shrink it's like a you can use it as a and as a glue and it works really well with things like this especially so what I'm going to do is get a damp rag make sure you have it damp enough to where you can squeeze water you want it really kind of wet but you don't want it dripping all over you clean this real good and the reason why is you don't want any powder in it you want this to grip everything take our plug I'm going to sit it right in there I'll take this little hole and fill it in just so it's easier when I come back to mud over the mud will stick on it takes a second not count when you're doing a patch and you have a painted wall you want to sand that off even if it's smooth if you don't have texture on there because you want to rough this up to give that drywall mud something to stick on always whip your mud up never take your mud right out of the bucket and try to put it on your wall you're going to have a mess this right here is just a simple cake mixer you can put this on your drill and just whip up a little on the top without making a mess and then you can use it that way if you don't have much just take it and mix it yourself by hand you can just push it up against your pan and whip it up you really want this creamy you want it to look like cake ices you just whip it or stir it back and forth like this and that will loosen it up and make it real creamy get all the bubbles out of it so you don't have any problems with it when you spread it on the wall the average di wire may make a mistake and put the tape on here and not cover the entire scene so you want to see where this is and make sure that you know exactly where your boundaries are you have to cover this and this now you take that in line and from that area over you make sure you got it covered you can put this on happy because I'm going to take this tape and wet it and if you wet that tape it's going to squeegee everything out if you leave it dry and you're not used to this what you will do is possibly put too much underneath it and not get it all out of there you're going to have a lump or you won't put enough you make squeegee too much out of it if you don't have that feel you get too much out of it and then when you come back over to paint it will lift up if you have a spot where there's no mud behind it it'll just bubble up and I've seen new new construction jobs like that we guys that know what they're doing when you're doing an entire house they'll make a mistake here there and not get it all the way under there and it will blister up when you come back to paint so just make sure you cover you to cover your bases and we'll take this tape and I just wet it let's put it a little thing of water now I know I can go right here because I'm in within this boundary you go right over it a little bit because that's going to squeeze you out don't worry and overlap in just a tiny bit your next piece is going to overlap that it's real thin papers real thin so it's not going to matter if you use something like to take the fiberglass mesh that can leave you a lump and there's a little bit harder to get clean so we'll put it over this make sure I cover over it now when I get this over here I'm going to pull it out clean my blade off hold one end squeegee it all out get it really tight now it is down there I'm just pushing like my blade on it tight and you'll see exactly where that circle is or the patch is because it's going to cover right to that area you can see I'm covering it all the way around I have a tiny Ridge this is good just feather it off some clean off this side and this is good and flat I used my little six-inch blade when I'm putting the tape on but when I come back over to float it I always use a bigger blade this is a fourteen inch blade now the wider the blade the smoother it's going to come out it's easier to float things out I'll make sure I have it on my whole blade and I'll start from here and just slightly pull it down I'm back and hit this alright well let this dry overnight and I'm going to give you a little tip on how to check things to make sure that you have all the imperfections out of here now on the camera you can't see this white it throws off so you really can't see all the imperfections in there they do have this light right here is small that's what I want a small one that will hug the wall we'll turn the lights out and I'll skim this across here and you're going to see how many imperfections we have in there with the lights dim we'll take the light and we'll shoot it right across I'll pick it up above it and fan it across here and you see this that's where the patch was and you see these little lines that's where the tape is and I have a little Ridge here and I have some ridges all around here they're real my tooth as far as I'm sanding them out it's going to come out real easily I can feel a little bit of a lift right there so we're just going to go ahead and stay in this little area and smooth it out let me use the same hundred grit sandpaper with the block you want to make sure you get all the edges real well and I'll feather it out into you texture that's Queen frenzy and you'll want to see a half when I fan it to where I can see the texture coming through and you have the arm the mud filling in the gaps you're perfect you know what saying too much way your paper is you're just going to come back over this this patch area where I know this tape is and I'm going to lightly hit that longer distance [Laughter] right here I have a little bit of fraying on the tape that's fine we didn't go through I just barely hit it so I'm going to put a skim coat right on here real light skin let it dry and it's not going to take long to dry I'll come back over and lightly hit it and we're ready your texture always look at your blade look down the edge of it and make sure you have a straight blade because if this thing is bent if you hit a nail or if it was in your tool box and something happened it has a nick or a little ding in it or anything like that when you go to feather it out you're going to have a groove and you're not gonna be able to get rid of that groove as long as you have a defect in this blade so make sure you look at your blades keep them in order I always keep them in a tray where they don't get knocked around because that's real important to have a tight blade you always want to take this and wipe it down with a little water before you do anything and put mud on it because if you have any kind of piece of trash anything a crumb when you drag that along here you're going to see tracks and people get frustrated when that happens they don't realize why it's happening that's that's the cause up doesn't take much mud at all on this and it's going to dry real fast even with regular mud rather than hot mud like I said what I'm doing patches a lot of times I'll use how much you're going to take this bleed and you're going to put it on an angle to where it's kind of flat at the tip rather than on edge and then you just I take my two fingers here when I grab my knife and I just push down on it as I skim that's it the second pass is dry now all we have to do is feather it out so we can spread you don't want to put a lot of pressure on it just one 500 grit sandpaper along there with this flight service kind of cleaning up real well then you'll clean up the edges good way that you'll put pressure on me but you want to get into the texture of the wall better it in now that it feels real smooth I'll come back over with a wet rag you don't want it to where it squishing all over you just want it good and damp you can bring a little water out of it if you want to do but it it's not dripping all over and you just wipe all the edges make sure everything's smooth all you'll do is wipe it here a little bit just to clean the dust off because you don't want to have all that drywall dust on there when you spray I'm trying to make this easier for the DI wire so I'm going to be using a can of HO max spray rather than my hopper and this is a real small patch so this works real well this is called ho max wall texture in its oil base I really don't care for the water base I've tried it out on a few little projects I made it work but I had to keep heating it up now if you want if you do decide to use the other home acts all wall texture you'll want to heat it up to get pressure because it doesn't have as much pressure as the oil base it kind of flops out so what you'll do is you'll heat up a pot of water let it sit on a side put your can in and take it off the stove don't put it on there while it's on the stove unless you can heat up for a few minutes in there and it will build up pressure and it will go on the wall a little better now with this if you want a fine texture on here and you're not getting it what you'll do is heat this one up like that and it will blast out harder and you'll get a finer texture the slower it comes out the arm the heavier the texture is now I'm going to go with the heaviest texture that I can with this because I want to blend it in to this other part of the wall it's been painted numerous times over the years and patched so what I'm going to do is spray that on here and then I can come back over with 220 or 400 grit sandpaper and lightly hit on the area's because this is rounded off it's not it's not pointy like the this will be this will be a little bit sharper not pointing but the other part is flat because paint has been on top of it a few times rolled on top of it so we'll take and lightly hit that with sandpaper and it'll come out just right you won't even be able to tell so I'm going to take this shake it up a little more I've already shaking it up pretty much and we're going to shoot it onto a piece of cardboard you always want to test it out on something before you put it on your wall not that you can't fix it but it makes it easier I'll take it here and off lightly hit it you can see I'm going a little circular pattern and you can kind of see the texture on there it's not a heavy texture and that is there heavy texture if I turn this over to light it's going to blast out harder you're going to hear it and that gives you a lighter smaller texture on there this is your heavy and this is your light it's not going to be as controllable as a hopper would be because a hopper you can really go heavy and go very fine I'm taking about 24 inches away fumes on this are pretty strong so you'll want to wear some type of mass well the batch is completed now we need to put it to the test and see how strong it is let's see what happens when we really slam it that's what I call a strong pack with this doorknob hit you can see an exact ring where it dented this in and it made a mark on the wall okay that's about it let me tell you a little bit about this drill this is a drill by rockwell and i really like it a lot it's a powerful little drill 531 inch pounds of torque and it has a 0 to 2,000 rpms which is pretty darn good I really like it and I'm very happy with it the key to this is it's got a 20 year warranty 20 year warranty on the motor on the drill itself and a 20 here free replacement on the batteries I'm going to give away a kit with two batteries the charger the bag and the drill so if someone who comments in my hot box below drop a comment on me so we can pick these out I'm going to pick it out from the first 200 people that that comment now if you're 210 or 240 or 50 it doesn't matter keep commenting because I do pick other ones from there and if I get a chance to get another one I will send that out to and pick a winner I'm also going to give away the quick mandrel bypass cap I'm gonna put this in in with the drill now this right here runs about $20 and it's a fantastic m'angil it's the best one that I've ever used and a fast cap has a lot of great products and check them out too I will see you on the next project don't forget to subscribe check out paul's toolbox com4 on my archive videos and don't forget respect the flag and thank our veterans whenever you see
