are you excited to be at first word this morning well i hope so because i'm excited because we are starting a new series it's called at home 10 habits of a healthy home and i believe this is going to be a fantastic series um i hope when you if you're a guest here today thank you so much for joining us especially for first word this is um an hour before our worship service starts and we do an adult sunday school in here so again thank you so much if you're a guest here thank you for joining us today if you're joining online thank you for tuning in as well i hope that everyone has a handout if you don't have a handout you can raise your hand and we'll have some volunteers that could bring a handout to you the handouts are at the information desk or when you came in so a guest service member probably gave you a handout but and if you don't have a handout and you have the church center app we can um after this my lesson will be on the church center app so you can look at my notes of exactly what we talk about today amen we're going to get started because i do have a lot of stuff and i want to make sure that i get us done quickly so we can go get our kids at 10 45 but we are starting a new series like i said it's called the at home series 10 habits of a healthy home does anyone in here want to have a healthy home i hope we all do um because and today as we see in american culture there is this conflict of family values um there's this conflict of family values almost like this cultural war of family values what is family values and so we see there's this movement in our government in our courts and obviously special interest groups to remove from law the spiritual principles that i believe america was founded on and so we have this weird cultural war right now and it's hitting our homes and so we want to have a healthy home so we're not going to look at what the culture of the world's telling us but we need to look at what the bible tells us to how to raise our kids or to how to have a healthy home and the the fact of the matter is if america was better off today than it was since in 1950 we would probably applaud these different moves to make family values a better thing but obviously we see that it has actually gotten a lot worse statistically for the last 100 years there's been this downfall of family values core values so we just got out of our core series of an individual now we're kind of moving into our home core beliefs of our home and so the divorce rate has increased to almost 50 percent in 1950s we saw where culturally we accepted the family value so in 1950 there was this big movement to push family value so the divorce rate actually plateaued actually started to decrease but then in 1960s we see what happened there the hippie movement and all kinds of crazy things that went on in the 1960s but that the hippie movement was a major major cause to the plummet of family values and then now we look to present day divorce rate is actually decreasing a little bit but that's due to the fact that people are choosing not to get married but to just live together married couples are surveyed regularly and what we find out through these surveys is that married couples are a lot wealthier obviously and they're also a lot happier the number of single parent families is around 27 which is 13.6 million single parents raising about 22.4 million children the teen suicide rate has increased 60 percent since 2007 to 2018 and after the pandemic as we all know it skyrocketed to 50 from 2019 to 2021 especially in females the federal debt gdp is up 895.4 since 1955 51 i'm sorry and the child abuse has been in an alarming uptick for the past 20 years and some countries like canada are actually reporting that the child abuse rate is up 1700 percent in america 9.2 and every 1 000 children in the united states were abused in 2018. in 2017 37 of washington dc's pregnancies ended in abortion in new york the state of new york 31 of pregnancies ended in abortion and since 1973 americans have legally now listened to me legally not illegally but we have legally aborted more than 60 million babies to give you a cross-reference there's only 30 million people in texas that's terrible so culturally we probably should not look at what america is telling us on how we should live our lives as far as how we raise our kids or how we have a healthy home and the bible warns us that turning from god's absolute principles will result in destruction and the collapse of a nation our founding fathers of this great nation built a good foundation and i believe it was built on christian principles um the the this country was founded upon three documents the declaration of independence the paris peace treaty of 1783 and of course the constitution these documents give evidence that there was bible influence or some sort of christian influence the declaration of independence has many references to god throughout the document the most famous one is this one right here is that men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights the constitution doesn't actually make reference to god but it does reference the sabbath day to what christians believe is on sunday the president was given is given 10 days to sign a bill into law but that does not include the sabbath that is found in article 1 section 7 clause 2. and then obviously the constitution that was completed september 177 or 1787 it was signed and ratified by the states and the delegates signed the constitution and labeled it the year of our lord so and we could go on and on about how i believe that america was founded on christian principles but it really doesn't take a historian to know or or a lawyer to know that there was obviously basic principles that came from the bible or christian beliefs but american there's this this cultural thing that's going out that's trying to remove what those principles are here in america because the viewpoint is oh those are outdated terms and maybe that was just of those times and there's people we we've grown up from those but there's this famous quote that says this the danger when men stop believing in god is not that they will believe in nothing but that they will believe in anything and so we're seeing that right now is that when culturally we started moving away from these principles is that now people are starting to literally just believe in anything and an astonishing 80 percent of north americans feel that our country is in a moral crisis and there is a plea that at this day and age that they want politicians to start addressing spiritual concerns um and they they they want people they want this culture to start pushing back family values there's another quote that says it's now politically correct to believe in family values but it's not politically correct to get specific about them so here's the problem it's good to push family values but whose values what values do we push because there are other people in this world that their values look completely different from my values so newsweek ran this article a cover story a couple years ago it was entitled whose values and it touched on this topic whose values are you going to follow what values do we follow you know i want a healthy lifestyle at my home i want to raise my kid correctly i want to have a healthy marriage i want my house to be a safe place but whose family values do i look at what family values do i structure my home after and but this is not and i could keep going on about america and politics but this is not politico first word this is povc first word so let's look at what the bible tells us number one thousands of years ago god gave us this an amazing tool it was like god's top ten god's top ten list to have a healthy lifestyle a healthy home and he called this the ten commandments so that's what we're gonna talk about today this is not a fad or political buzzword but this these values were actually the bedrock for western civilization virtually all belief systems considered that majority of the ten commandments is good for the human race majority of the uh of all belief systems believe that the ten commandments is good for the human race three religions identify with this and that's jewish christians and muslims they all agreed that the ten commandments is good for the human kind there is one religion that does not believe in this and and i'm not being facetious or joking but it is the church of satan literally the church of satan has identified that this is not a good thing well obviously so i'm not going to join that side i'm going to stick on this side in the hebrew language in which they were first delivered the ten commandments are called this and if anybody can speak hebrew you can say that but i'll just use the english term it's ten words the ten commandments holds us accountable that's what the ten commandments are and so when i started looking at this i wondered how many of us live by the ten commandments obviously we strive to live by the ten commandments right we all have a desire to live to follow the ten commandments but how many of us can name all the ten commandments right now now i don't want you to do it but it's a rhetorical question because there is statistics news newsweek once reported that 49 of protestants and 44 of catholics couldn't even name four of them so if we want to have a healthy home and we want and god laid it out for us hey here's 10 ways here's the 10 ways you can have a healthy home how can we have a healthy lifestyle in our houses in our homes if we can't even name all the ten commandments so number two why did god give the ten commandments god didn't give the ten commandments to hurt us but he gave it to help us not to restrict us but to release us he didn't give us the ten commandments to just sit there and punish us but he gave it to us to protect us every time god says don't it is for our benefit and anytime he says don't do this it is for our benefit and this reminded me um the other day my wife was kid was cooking in the kitchen and so i'm raising a two-year-old two-year-old right now and so any parents that have raised a two-year-old you know what state where you're in right now my son is in the testing stage to see what he can get away with so great so we're in the testing stage so we're trying to communicate what you can and cannot get away with so megan's cooking in the kitchen and my son decides to go to the oven and the stove because he knows that we all we've told him no that is hot you don't touch that so he thinks it's funny let me run over there and see if i get in trouble because i want to test i'm going to test my boundaries so he starts doing it i hear megan in the kitchen saying beckham no it's hot and so he's beginning to giggle and laugh a little bit and i come in there of course daddy gets involved and i say son don't do it and he starts laughing again i'm like this is going very well and i'm like don't do it it's going to hurt you if you touch this it's going to be very very hot and it's going to burn you so why are you doing this and he thinks it's funny he keeps touching or trying to touch he never touched it he keeps trying to and then he goes to the oven he's trying to pull it open and we're like no don't do these things because it's going to be hot and it's going to hurt you and it's like i can picture god doing the same things like what are y'all doing i've laid 10 commandments out for you and if you touch these and break these one day it's going to be very hot so if you just follow these 10 commandments i i know i know you think it's funny i know you think it's hard i know you think but if you just obey these commandments you're going to be all right these 10 these 10 commandments are not just like some suggestion but it's it's it's not an option this is something we should live by it's like if you jump out of a 10-story window you're going to break the law of god's gravity or god's law of gravity right and you're breaking that law but you're also going to break something else it's the same with spiritual laws it's the same thing in the physical as it is in the spiritual deuteronomy 6 6-7 says and you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands i give i am giving you today and then it says repeat them again and again to your children so follow these commands and if you want to have a healthy home repeat these commands to your children show them the way these are an integral part a very important part of family values so for the next 10 weeks and we haven't really discussed if we're going to go 10 weeks with this but we're going to talk about 10 habits for a healthy home and so today is we're going to talk about number one examine your priorities examine your priorities exodus 22-3 says i am the lord your god who rescued you from slavery in egypt do not worship any other gods besides me the order of the ten commandments is not just thrown together this there's a reason why he started out with this number one is the foundation for a strong family the very first command is a very important command you shall you should not have any other gods before me so what's the principle that he's being that's being taught here very simple examine your priorities put god first it's very simple put god first god demands top priority in our lives and he refuses to be second in your life so and obviously he deserves to be number one but what does it mean no other gods before me and it is a lowercase g on purpose that's not a typo no other gods before me so what does it mean when it says no gods before me and it's a lowercase g well that's stating that anything that dominates or controls your life see there's good things that can control your life there's good things there's good things that god has given us that we can enjoy that we can can participate in but it can control your life and the last phrase of the first command is is is very good and is go to the next slide it gives us hebrew if y'all want to pronounce that you can but it's basically stating no gods to be in my face there should be no gods nothing that dominates your time should be cut off or communication with him so politics cell phones social media uh entertainment um certain hobbies even business right if there's anything a lowercase g anything a god that is dominating your life maybe we need to reevaluate and examine our priorities see every time god gives a principle he also gives a promise and we see that in proverbs 3 6 and everything you do put god what first and and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success and that's not the levi bible translation it's the living bible if you want to go look up a different translation you can i just picked a verse that was easy to translate this point i know people are probably thinking what is the lb um do you want to be successful do you want your homes to be successful then we have to examine our priorities right we have to examine it and god lays this out and he says if you put me first in everything that you do you're going to be all right so number four whatever you want god to bless put him first in that area put him first in that area really quick illustration the north american divorce rate is now one in three marriages but harvard did this study that um a marriage that participated in a church actually the divorce rate is 1 in 50. in marriages that that invite a christian ceremony and they live by a principle of going to church every single week they pray together they read their bible together the divorce rate goes to one in one thousand and one hundred and five so if you want your marriage to be successful you put god first you put god first in that marriage so that's easy to say so let's look at really quick five ways on how we can put god first number one we're going to talk about finances so if you want your finances to be okay we got to put god first we've got to put god first in our finances proverbs 3 9-10 says honor the lord by giving him your money in the first part of all your crops then you will have more grain and grapes than you will ever need god says give me the first part back and i will bless the rest the bible teaches this basic principle that money is the number one test for your priorities so again today lesson number one we're talking about examining our priorities we're trying to have a healthy home a healthy lifestyle what do we got to do the first thing is examine our finances because that is going to test to see where your priorities are if i looked at your checkbook and well no one does anybody use checkbook anymore my father-in-law does oh wow okay if i looked at your bank statement or your checkbook i could see pretty quickly where your priorities are not what you say not how you put things but how you spend your money and god talks more about giving than either heaven or hell and i'm not going to spend a lot of time on this because we just talked about this in our core series but just comparing some words here belief is used 272 times pray is used 371 times love is used 714 times but give is used 2 162 times so this is important to god this is important deuteronomy 14 and 23 says the purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put god first in your lives so what is tithing really quick it's 10 all that you make goes back to god why is this important god says if i'm not tithing if i'm not giving the first thing that i make because again we're putting everything first we're putting god first in everything that we do if i'm not giving that back to god then i know that that's not my top priority if you're in a financial mess the best thing i could the best advice i could give you is to take the first step and say you know what god i'm gonna i'm gonna try this out i'm gonna put you first in my finances because again let's remember this statement whatever you want god to bless put him first in that area why should i tie or when should i tithe on the first day of every week that's the day that you go to worship that we all should go to worship because tithing is an act of worship first corinthians 16 and 2 says on every lord's day each of you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week and use it for this offering the amount depends on how much the lord has helped you earn where should i tithe where should i give my money well where you're spiritually fed the storehouse the matter of tithing is all is the matter of tithing is the only instance where god says if you test me and you want to see if i exist do these steps and let me prove to you that i will bless you malachi 3 10 says i am the lord all powerful and i challenge you to put me to the test bring the entire 10 into the storehouse so there will be food in my house then i will open the windows of heaven and flood you with blessings after blessings so we got to put god first in our finances number two we need to put god first in our interests first corinthians 10 31 says whatever you eat or drink whatever you do you must do all for the glory of god if god's actually number one in our lives if we truly are trying to live by these principles and we want to put god first in our lives then are you putting god first in your entertainments are you putting god in your recreations and your hobbies so how that's kind of weird how do i do that how do i put god first well everything that you do go with an attitude of gratitude and that puts god first in that area enjoy the things he's given you sure he's giving you some great things that you need to enjoy number six you can tell what a person's priorities are by seeing what they get excited about so if i'm in the church before before service and i'm walking these halls and i hear someone talking about coffee not like not like casually but i i understand that they're talking about like pour over coffees and i'm gonna stop i'm gonna get excited about that if i hear someone talking about cameras or videography or pictures or video and something i'm going to stop and get excited and want to join in on that conversation why it's because i get excited about it and it's important to me so you know when you're talking in a casual conversation if someone's getting excited about something you know that's important to them if you kind of know someone that really don't talk too much doesn't talk you know when you're in a room with them they really just don't say much words but if you get them on the right topic they will start talking everyone loves something everyone has an interest in something and so whatever makes you excited is what is a priority in your life so if god's first in your life in your interest and the conversation comes up about god generally you should get excited about that it should be easy for you to talk about because god's first in your interests so the other day i went to get some food from a restaurant picked it up and i had i love my church t-shirt on and um the guy asked me do you love your church and i was like yes sir um i was wearing it and then and and he said awesome what church you go to so we when we we talked for a while and i got excited we started talking about god was talking about science and how that involves in in in in christianity and we just talked for a while and i got excited about it and that made me realize that hey if talking about god to to random strangers is exciting and fun then i believe god's first in my life and i'm not ashamed to talk about it i will i love my church shirt out in public i'm not ashamed of this church i'm excited about this church i love this church so i'm putting god first in my priorities ephesians 5 19 says talk with each other much about the lord relationships let's go to the third one we got to put god first in our relationships we have to put god first in our relationships proverbs 27 and 19 a mirror reflects a man's face but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friend friends he chooses if you want god to be first in your life you're going to have to choose your friends wisely it seems such like a youth pastor statement to make to students but i think we can all take that lesson is that we have to be careful who we hang around with right we have to we want god first in our homes well it has we have to put god first in our relationships now here in my heart i'm not saying don't stop reaching don't stop reaching for people don't stop trying to be friends with people that you're trying to to win or to trying to witness to that's not what i'm saying i'm just saying be careful who you hang out with what is your priorities and who you hang out with because the people you spend the most time with you're going to become like them if you spend a lot of time with someone that takes god lightly you're going to become a casual believer if you spend a lot of time with people that are committed to coming to church and i'm speaking the first word that is here an hour before church starts so it feels like i'm preaching to the choir then then you're going to be a serious believer and you're trying to make church every single time you're trying to get in his word and you're trying to be a committed christian and parents really quick what type of people you expose your children to will determine what they think or what what values they portray in your home so you invite certain people into your houses your kids are watching saying that's the type of behavior that's welcomed into this home so we got to make sure that we're modeling a certain kind of behavior that we want our kids and our home to be after and this is this is a little shameless plug but i don't care this is why connect groups are so important is because you're building your relationships with christian believers and so you there's a lot of people in this church that have a lot of interest you have a lot of things that you want to to be involved in and i've recently picked up on the hobby of disc golf i love disc golf i don't know why i like it but i like it so i i i know there's people like brother neal there's other people in the church that play disc golf and so that's an interest of mine that i want to start growing and connecting with my my church family um joining the connect group is having a group of believers uh to to get together and build relationships off each other proverbs 13 20 says wise friends make you wise but you hurt yourself by going around with fools can can i borrow someone really quick can you come right here just really quick so if and i'm not saying that i'm not yeah you can come right here right here right there you go you're good right there you go you stare right there i'm not saying he does this okay this is totally an illustration right so if i'm by myself and i'm out there trying to witness and win people and that's great and i'm and i'm trying to you know what i like church but i want to hang around with different people well just for all of illustrations say he's not in the church okay and so i'm sitting here trying to pull him up i'm trying to pull him up to my level it's going to be very difficult for me to pull him up to my level because what in the process of me pulling him up i'm going to hurt him because he's obviously going to skin something and i'm not the strongest person and so they laughed at that um and so if i pull him up i'm going to hurt myself and i'm going to hurt him because i'm trying my hardest to pull him up even though he's he's further down but if he tries to pull me down it's a lot easier right because the leverage is different so if he took me and he tried to pull me down don't do it please because you would yank me across the sanctuary you're okay you can go sit down thank you um if i try to pull him up to my level it's going to be very hard but it's easier for someone to pull you down but if just theoretically if i'm in a connect group with a group of believers and we all have the same interest and i have someone at my work or my business and says um you know what you you have the same interest as us you have you played disc golf come hang out with us it's a lot easier for my connect group of ten of us to try to witness and live a certain lifestyle we have different family values we have a christian belief system in our homes and we're doing everything that we can we're striving to do the best thing for our family and also live putting god first and everything and then that person comes into that atmosphere it's a lot easier for 10 of us to pull him up and to come to our level and also it's going to be hard for them to pull me down because there's 10 other people holding me accountable so connect groups are super important that's my same with shameless plug i hope you join a connect group next next weekend is our connect group semester we have a lot of connect groups yeah thank you thank you thank you but it's important it's seriously it seriously is very important and connect groups is very important to me into this church we have a lot of testimonies through connect groups but building godly relationships is very very important and we're trying to have a healthy home because again wise friends make you wise but you hurt yourself by going around with fools if you really want god first then some relationships might not be right you have to evaluate who's in your life let's go to the next one schedule if we want a healthy home and a healthy lifestyle again we're examining our priorities and we're trying to put god first in everything that we do so we got to put god first in our schedules ephesians 5 16 through 17 says make the best use of your time despite all the evils of these days don't be vague but grasp firmly what you know to be the will of the lord so how do i put god first in my schedule that's a weird thing well do a to-do list look at your priorities on that to-do list what's going on that day what's going on that week pray over that schedule god if this is your will for me to do these things is it going to take up too much time to where i can't go to my connect group or go to a church service or if i can't go do this if i can't go do this with my youth group if i it look at your to-do list if i'm not if i'm spending too much time at work and i don't have enough time for my family at home look at your schedule and say god is this is this top priority in my life how can i adjust my schedule to have a healthy home and if you're like me i have to be told this all the time is levi you can't do everything you don't have time to do everything so it's okay you don't have time to do everything selection is the name of the game and god has a plan for all of our lives god has a plan for our schedules and the truth of the matter is if you feel like you don't have enough time to to go to church or do certain things then maybe you need to reevaluate your schedule eight if you really want god to be first in your life then you need to make a daily appointment with him so if you notice even if you're striving you're trying to do your best i understand i understand we're all busy our schedules are totally crazy in today's day and age but we have to have a daily appointment with god we're putting we're examining our priorities we're trying to have a healthy home so in our schedules how can i put god first in my schedule well read your bible pray review your schedule and your priorities with him even jesus woke up really early because i believe jesus had a busy schedule jesus was had his to-do list he had his planner out and he was he was checking everything but he realized hey i even have to make time to go pray so i have to wake up early we see that in mark 1 35 it says very early the next morning jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray we see he went he had to go pray he had to wake up early had to make time to go pray so we got to put god first in our schedules we got to make time for him we got gotta evaluate our schedules and media team i'm gonna skip over the quadrants i'm running out of time here i'm gonna go to troubles this is the last one troubles psalm 50 and 15 pray to me in time of trouble i will rescue you and you will honor me god is saying turn to me first when you've got a problem turn to me first if we're trying to have a healthy home because again we're examining our priorities and if we if we look at our priorities in everything that we do if we're putting god first if we're obeying the first command and when trouble hits our homes god says what do you do when trouble hits your home because trouble is going to hit homes and so when trouble hits your home it hits your house hit your family god says turn to me first prayer should never be a second option it should always be the first option prayer is never the last resort it's always the first option god is waiting for us to turn to him first and he's saying if you put me first even in the tough times i know you put me first in your finances i know you're trying to put me first in your interest i know you're putting me first in your relationships in in your schedule i see that but why are you not putting me first in your troubles because the problem is some people think they didn't put god first in their finances or maybe they put god first in their finances but their interests they didn't put god first and they had this this this this uh this this rut that they're stuck in where they're not putting god first so god's not becoming a priority in their life so when trouble when it gets down to the last tier of trying to put god first in their troubles and they haven't put god first in their finances their interests their relationship their schedules what's going to happen here they're not going to put god first in their troubles because they're thinking they're bothering god that they only go to god when troubles hit because they didn't put god first and everything else so you can't skip all the way to troubles so they they tell themselves i can't go to god now because i feel guilty of going to him because it only seems like i'm only going to him in times of trouble but god says bother me you got to put me first i don't care you keep bothering me don't carry this weight all by yourself and number nine how do you know when god is really first in your life it's very easy you stop worrying worry is this warning light that god is not first in our lives it's this practical moment that says you know what why am i worried about the finance well did i put god first in my finances why am i worried about this interest did i put god first in my interest no maybe i didn't why am i worried about these relationships because maybe i didn't put god first in my relationships did i why am i worried about my schedule am i not having enough time for my family in the evenings or maybe i'm not being able to make these business meetings or maybe maybe i can't make church services on wednesdays or for first word because i just got a scheduling conflict i can't join a connect group because i'm just so busy but i'm so worried about my schedule did you put god first in your schedules and then why are you always worrying about the problems of today it's because you didn't put god first in your troubles when god is not first in my finances when god is not first in my interest when god is not first in my relationships when god is not first in my troubles i worry about them so today we're examining our priorities and i'm almost done matthew 6 33 says but more than anything else put god's work first and do what he wants then the other things will be yours as well now what's pretty cool about this is that did anyone does anybody know these set of scriptures that this was placed in the middle of a sermon about worry let's read the whole thing in in its entirety only people who don't know god are always worrying about such things your father in heaven knows that you need all these all of these but more than anything else we have to put god's work first and do what he wants then the other things will be yours as well don't worry about tomorrow i know we're all worried about things in this world but tomorrow is going to take care of itself you have enough to worry about today joshua's commitment says in joshua
