hey guys if you're new to the channel my name is larry casilla from ammonyc.com now last week a fan of the show reached out he purchased a new home inside the barn was a 1962 mercury montclair so we're gonna head down there pick this thing up hopefully get it cleaned up and back on the road that and a whole lot more on this episode of drive protect [Music] upon arrival the driveway was in rough shape to say the least so it was the first time i really got to use the lift on the ticon for anything other than speed bumps at the top of the hill was an old barn or garage looking structure hopefully with a car inside after a few minutes of snooping around all right devin and luke's uncle arrived to open up the doors and the waft of the smell just from the outside door's opening was intense from the urine and the feces and whatever else i was gonna find inside [Music] well it's uh i think it's like a 1967 maybe a 68 mercury montclair um i bought the house in 2018 the car was here i think it's been sitting here since the 1990s um it was an older couple they're in the 90s that lived here one of the guys was uh well the husband was a screenwriter he had his little office upstairs um i bought the house i looked at his office and he had a script in his typewriter and his old black typewriter and i was like he just left wife lived here i think she died when she was 93 and the house was vacant for three years before i bought it they left the house to one of their their children uh daughter lives in the uk couldn't take the car away and uh looking to find a nice home for it so i did a bit of research on the previous owner john vallejos who passed away april 8 2004. as it turns out he was one of the leading screenwriters in the 1950s and 60s his credits include 17 screenplays 70 radio scripts 52 network television live and film dramas and over 200 television episodes in 1962 he won an emmy award for killer instinct which was an episode of the defenders and is considered one of the leading writers in what's known as the golden era of television which was basically plays or shows filmed live on television and not taped or pre-recorded as they are today obviously in that era there's no second takes and the writers were actually the stars more so than the actors themselves so it's completely different than today anyhow it's important to save any car from the crusher in my opinion but this one has some extra special meaning and hopefully a second act step one was to remove everything around it and pull the box trailer up to the barn but because it was so tight and overgrown devin couldn't really put the box down and still have enough room to pull the truck bed out and pull out in front of it so we tried filling up the tires and pushing it out to get some more room but of course no go okay at this point a little bit of a change of plans we don't have enough space to be able to get the box truck in there down and then pulled out so we need to go get a flatbed uh the the owner just closed everything up devin's over here he's actually gonna go right now switch everything up hopefully we'll come back with a flatbed hi dude i'll talk a little bit [Music] a few hours later both devin and i arrived again but this time with the smaller flatbed instead of the enclosed box trailer how do how do you die that way so he his leg got stuck in there no is that his leg yeah his leg oh yeah that's his tail he couldn't with the bed backed up to the mercury he hooked it up to the axle and we yanked it out pretty easily this is like a mouse haven in here this newspaper i'm sure is from the year of the flood stinks super simple with her all loaded up we headed back to the studio [Music] this is the suspension [Music] once inside the wheel wouldn't roll because it's off the rim so we used jacks and of course skates to get her inside and around the lips just before devon left he asked me what the paint's gonna look like after it's polished so i quickly grabbed my latest concoction and used it on one section just to see how the paint's gonna play and it'll actually look pretty good but there's lots of work to do before we get to the fun part first i removed the wheel and went over to steve so he could order me a new one just so i could roll it in and around the shop as needed he took a shot at reseeding the bead in the meantime by removing the core from the valve stem and then filled it up with air go on youtube and look at the the ones where they inflate it with ether yeah have you seen any of those pretty cool that's pretty good they spray ether down there and toss a match at it and it blows up and inflates it really yeah why don't we do that you know yeah i don't have any ether sure enough it actually held air and was at least good enough for me to push the car in and out of the studio obviously they weren't roadworthy but it makes my life a whole lot easier when i need to move it back at the studio i put the ozone machine inside for a few hours as a very last resort i really need my chlorine dioxide tablets but they're still in shipping they'll be here soon now since this beast is covered in poop and spider webs and dust and who knows what else step one is a healthy power washing first when you're using a pressure washer it's a good idea to always double push or double check your nozzle tip as you push it into the coupler why because it could potentially fall out and shoot across room one thing you want to do is spray it on the ground first to ensure that it's not going to do that it's just a good or a healthy habit to get into with my mask on i power wash the years of grime off the car when i power wash the wheel wells you can actually see that this car went up and down that horrible driveway for years you see all the mud just pouring out you know when you find an acorn stuck on the outside of the trim there's gonna be a disaster on the inside you're in for a fight finally i opened the hood and found a ton of acorns and mouse droppings everywhere when i went to look inside the air filter i found this i'm scared to find out what's in here oh my gosh we have the record ladies and gentlemen we have the record oh my gosh so at this point i called my buddy ted you remember him from the doodlebug episode he is a master of old engines all right after a quick inspection as it turns out the motor of course is frozen so he suggested that we pull the spark plugs and put some oil in the cylinders we may be able to muscle it what we could do is pull the spark plugs out put oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a couple of days and then maybe it'll loosen it up i've had it happen before because ted's in my shop and obviously not his we didn't have all the tools that he'd need to sort of diagnose this so steve came over to see what tools we would need to borrow oh look at that hook the spark plugs were ridiculously tight but of course with the proper tools and the breaker bars they came out they fought the whole way while they were coming out but they did come out at the exact same time i didn't realize that ted and steve nor did they realize were actually schoolmates they went on the same school bus etcetera and they're like hey wait a second did you go to this school that kind of thing so this car is sort of bringing everybody together i was pretty pumped now with the plugs out you can see down the cylinder walls they're all rusted out so we added automatic transmission fluid because we had it handy and he said it was okay to do that then we reinstalled the plugs just to protect the cylinder walls while i was power washing okay now we have oil in the cylinders where do we go from here well let us sit a couple days you guys work your magic clean this up and uh fingers crossed 50 50 chance we'll see if the if that we can get it to spin over there's a chance it might run oh that's awesome all right i'll call you in a few days thanks man next i vacuumed the engine to remove the acorns in the nest etc then emptied out the air box outside in the driveway if you look closely there's still live worms or maggots or whatever on the inside this was super gross inside i cleaned the engine and the surrounding areas to remove the mouse waste the dirt and the urine just poured out of the frame next i grabbed boost and brute filled the foamer and soaked the engine in the paint and just let the detergents do their work afterwards i scrubbed the paint with brute microfiber towel and a dual density scrub brush for the tight areas [Music] [Music] hmm uh [Music] after the rinse i cleaned up the hubcaps with brute and plumb wheel cleaner and they came right back to life [Music] now normally at this point i would usually work the interior but i need to hit it with those tablets first to even come close to it so i focused on bringing the paint back to life or at least enough for someone to be interested to take it all the way i used my 21 millimeter polisher foam pad and the new red polish i've been playing with this in particular has a longer working time which i prefer and it's easier to remove after polishing with a primed pad i work the driver side of the hood to see of course the 50 50 shot of before and after it's definitely not perfect after the first pass but it's way better the deep scratches are not going to be removed because we don't have that much paint to work with and the chances of burn through are actually pretty high so we're going to leave it here okay i just finished my 50 50 and it looks really good working on single stage paint is super fun but there's a few things that you need to keep in mind why because of the residue meaning there's no clear coat there's no clear layer over it this black paint or green or purple or red whatever pick the color in this case it's black as you can see by the pad it's just coming off in gobs now the challenge is if i measure the paint you can see there's not a whole lot of paint here right there's about 2.5 i measured the door jamb it's about .8 maybe one so we have a little bit more than one mil to work on that's not a whole lot of room to play let's say on a new car you're between four and a half five six something like that so you have way more mils to play with this one i don't so what i'm doing is i'm using a foam pad instead of wool or microfiber that kind of thing but when you're working on single stage paint three things to keep in mind one you want to decrease the size that you're working in normally you can do a whole big panel if it was clear coated why because there's not that much residue coming off in this case you need to shrink that down the second thing is you want to increase the amount of liquid that you're using why because there's so much residue coming out you want to sort of counter balance that with the amount of liquid so it doesn't overwhelm the pad and then stick we've all been in that situation you're polishing it gets very sticky you can't you can't wipe it off with a microfiber towel that's probably what's happening there and the third thing is you guys know what i'm going to say of course blow out your pad more frequently than you would let's say on a normal i'm using air quotes there a normal clear coated paint but when you're doing it on single stage it looks absolutely amazing from a detailer perspective i love working on a single stage if you just stay within those three sort of parameters you'll come out with good results and you'll be pretty happy so let's keep going after 30 minutes or so i needed to rinse out the pad to remove the old dead paint as you can see in the sink when you plan on doing this use warm water if possible and then allow it to dry just pick up a new pad and continue in the process [Music] 2 [Music] [Music] [Music] after the one step polish it looks a thousand times better is it perfect by no means and there is a ton of real estate to work on in this particular car as you can tell we're going to hop on to the chrome pieces here now what makes this interesting is i'm going to use the exact same pad why because we're throwing it away i'm not going to obviously use this again plus if you do decide to use a foam pad on chrome you can't use it on paint afterwards so also keep that in mind this is not really pitted there's a few things here and there so if it was really bad i would say you have to go with a different type of pad you may have to go with different type of polish but i'm going to use the exact same thing i used on the paint i'm going to use on the bumper here and it's going to look 100 times better but at the same time you're going to do it much quicker than doing it by hand [Music] in the super tight spots use a microfiber towel with some polish by hand [Music] once the outside was getting pretty close to being finished i started the interior by removing the rubber grommets on the underneath of the car and unbolting the interior bench seats for those of you who noticed i didn't throw the car up on the lift for a couple reasons one it looked super heavy and i just didn't want to deal with that number two was kind of a pain to move around even though i had the new tire so i just decided to avoid the headache and work on the ground [Music] now look at the interior of this thing absolutely disgusting like 401 cessna level gross those yellow brownish stains that you see on the seats are actually from mouse urine stains on the vinyl disgusting the inside absolutely reeked so the first thing i did was soak everything in ammo rose store which of course is the epa regulated disinfectant and the goal there is just to knock everything down so i can get inside safely as gross as this car is there are studies out there that show that a steering wheel on a daily driven car contains more bacteria than the average toilet seat which is disgusting so using a specific disinfectant that's designed to not damage the interior of your car is a smart way to minimize the chances of getting sick anyhow with the bolts now removed i pulled the bench seats outside and into the driveway i did the same exact thing on the back seats and found the biggest mouse nest i've ever found in my entire career [Music] oh another one next i remove the door trim that holds the carpet down and remove the urine saturated rugs and through them outside [Music] inside i scooped up the nest and put it into a 55-gallon plastic bag it was super disgusting and i repeated the same steps when i was outside next i vacuum the floorboards [Music] [Music] now that's a vacuum once again i soak the floorboards in restored to kill just whatever was living there that i hadn't yet gotten okay day two is now done that by far was the most disgusting amount of mouse nest i don't even know how to describe it it was actually uh terrifying uh there was moths coming out the first time i've ever seen that hanging out with my buddy here we're gonna clean him up hopefully we'll keep him uh inside the building as well but a lot of people are gonna ask why are you doing this the truth of the matter is this car was gonna be crushed i cannot it's certain it's sort of like seeing an animal get put down i can't do it it's just not part of my we got to save this thing so i'm having a blast we're going to pop off the door cards put the ozone machine in i'll clean it with lather we're going to hit it with some stronger stuff same thing here on the outside we'll do that tomorrow i'll power wash everything maybe not the carpets uh we may need to replace them hit it with a bit of bleach and i think we're gonna be good to go uh for now i need to take a shower okay start of day three now last night i got a package from simonize this is called odor out it came in a pack of 24 i believe once you open up the package inside you're gonna find these little tablets you see that this is sodium chloride mixed with other acids of course you're going to take this you're going to put it in the cup there's a line right there a red line now that red line is going to be filled all the way up with water take this out of the bag and you drop it in you want to do that inside of course then i have this little efficiency device basically it pumps air just like maybe on your fish tank that kind of thing you stick it in there it'll help it bubble help it gas out a little bit more now this is really going to kill it i would have done this earlier but my package didn't arrive for shipping and delivery as i'm sure you guys all know so we're going to do that let it sit for a little bit and then go outside and start scrubbing down the actual interior parts and see if we can get this thing back together once activated the tablet will turn yellowy oranges and bubbles like crazy as it releases the chlorine dioxide gas which is a safe biocide now i get these from simoniz usa and it takes about two hours for the gas to make direct contact with the odor-causing compounds such as bacteria mold and viruses and pet stains tobacco and so on i'll put a link in the description for more info for the seats that were outside my goal is just to make it as safe to work on in the future as possible and i brought out all the weapons i'm talking about bleach mixed with water in a spray bottle 50 50 ammo lather in the aerator vinegar soft scrub and of course disc scrub pads if you're asking yourself why go through all the trouble that's a logical question you see these seats are very likely to be reupholstered but in the process someone has to remove them which leads to exposure likewise from what i'm learning this is a 66 not a 62 and the parts and pieces of this car are actually valuable to someone restoring their own so it's likely the springs and the metal components of the seat may need to be saved and for more of an odd wiry reason i just wanted to see how all these cleaners would react to the vinyl and of course the urine and after some drill brushes and several scrub pads later it was better but it wasn't something i would probably take a nap on or whatever in the future inside i used lather in the aerator to scrub the headliner and the doors lastly i spread baking soda around the interior to soak up the last of the moisture and smell while the baking soda was doing its work outside i cleaned the glass which is always fun on a car that sat indoors for years the glass is always super clean once you wipe away all the gunk because when you're done it hasn't been exposed over all these years and it looks really good with the car sort of rounding third at this point the white walls were driving me crazy so i used plum in a stiff bristle brush to bring back the 60s bling and of course i added some mud tire dressing because why not okay after three days of doing this i know you're watching saying why the heck are you putting wax on it i'm putting wax on it for me this is my little relaxation it is period correct it makes me feel good i worked really hard on this let me put some wax on it all right it looks pretty good too smells great actually the only thing that smells good around here after three days you start to lose your mind doing this but i still feel good about it we save something and hopefully very very soon somebody will take it home with that the very last thing to do was to give marvin the martian a bath and let him go for a spin in his beloved car i thought this would come off easier [Music] once outside and shiny i shot an instagram story and offered it up to the first smiling person willing to give this a new life it was a total donation come and get it now of course within 15 minutes i had 11 willing caretakers so thank you to all of you who responded and the very first one was a husband and wife from washington dc hello hey hey my name is pavle and i really it's a final nice to meet you nice come on in yeah this is my wife you're the first one nice to meet you nice to meet you come in take a look oh my goodness do you like it no way no way no way this is like come like you're the leave proof that that that like that good things can happen in life you know that's right like oh my goodness look at this may i or go it's it's your car you can go do anything you want my goodness look at that so there's a little bit of baking soda in there all right put that in there to kind of soak everything up okay but there's definitely some rust that needs to be taken care of the seat belts that kind of thing but this is my favorite part of the entire car feel that with your hand fill the steering wheel feel the like the cuts in it wow you imagine that doing that back then for grip these days like plastic or how is this like yeah it's like a little plastic piece but i just i never felt any ones that have this little grip wow and then if you come on this side this is what i think is the coolest part too if you open up this door they didn't do this you know this was like a aftermarket pretty cool thing open up this those that's where the flashers are take a look at this wow so if you have you know for safety that wasn't like a you know in the 60s that wasn't like a huge thing but now you can flip this on and off to turn your s because now you have to have it within in in a reach right yeah you couldn't put that in the box so things like that make this car super special not to mention the guy who owned it of course as i mentioned in my you know latest post is an emmy award-winning writer so that's kind of cool so like i know that you said that you want to donate this donation it's yours yeah but like i coming from the country it's like i want to pay for this like whatever i just want to like to give like at least at least one thousand dollars how about this i'll make it we'll find something that i know that the owner of this car a writer famous writer he's amazing uh would love and we can donate the money to a charity all right that the even better like that's better that's a great idea i have one in mind they're called asap we have some family members that work with them and basically it's after school arts okay for kids to learn how to write and do other things in the arts i think that would be great if is it for kids for writing famous like i will write check right away yeah man this is all thank you now you're like you're giving me goosebumps so with that the nicest man on the planet and his wife wrote a check to the after-school arts program for young writers and artists before pushing it outside and onto their trailer hey wait wait wait i forgot oh you gotta have marvin i got the marvin i gotta sign it all right thank you so much i got it i really appreciate it enjoy it man yeah thank you so much and we will put this baby back on the street really soon awesome awesome all right let's put in the back here yeah let's put it in back this is our new friend okay all right roll the window my friend is here and he need to safety first safety all right look at that guy look at that guy all right [Laughter] see you guys all right be well safe travels see ya guys awesome well uh that couldn't have gone any better we accomplished three things we saved the car from the crusher we got it back on the road hopefully with him we found a brand new home this couldn't be a more genuine happy guy and then third we were able to donate some money to a great cause in the name of the previous owner who was uh this amazing writer so this couldn't have gone any better i couldn't have been happier as always guys thanks for watching see you next time a few days later ali solmis and joanne tordy from asap were kind enough to visit the ammo studio take a quick tour to learn more about the channel and i was thrilled to be able to pass along the donation on behalf of the original owner john vallejos to this great organization asap is an arts infused education organization and we serve children throughout our state during the school day after school and summer camp and we are going to be using this money to help kids come to our camp who otherwise would not have that opportunity to learn more about how you can help be sure to visit asapct.org for more info i received an update from the new owner that the prep ted did by oiling the cylinders actually worked and the car turned over a few days later so he's on his way to a full restoration of course i will keep you updated as the project moves along as always guys thanks for watching and subscribing see you next week [Music] [Music] you
