this is a 1978 Pontiac Firebird a bot sight on scene there it is it hasn't ran and gears of course it's been off the road many more than that I'm an extreme Northern Ohio in fact the Canadian borders right there no if and a guy wanted to take a swim I'm gonna try to get this thing running and attempt to drive it 700 miles back home to Southern Tennessee great [Music] one of these days you just ain't gonna make it there that's that's all there is doing [Music] now listen I get it a lot of you already have noticed that doesn't have 914 cubic inches and a 12 speed and two speed rear end and quad t-tops and an ostrich on the hood with six shakers sticking out and stickers I get it all right but it's still a 78 firebird and you bet it's worth saving and putting back on the road this one I actually know quite a bit about the history because the original owner lives right across the street believe it or not and then a feller bought it drove it for a bit sold it to his friend and then it just sat forever and I bought it from the Fellers his this friend guy so I'm the fourth owner but really it's only ever had one and I'm told whatever it is on the odometer is 110 accurate it's supposed to be a low mileage car but Ohio got to it let's go Highway in reduction any direction you look on the thing thankfully not in the drip rails and stuff like that before we take a look around this rig and drink it up I got to get it out of these weeds these weeds are mixed in with Poison Ivy and all sorts of stuff and that would make for one bad itchy week you know what I'm talking about you've been there I got a rental truck back here I'm gonna hook a chain on this thing and drag it out of here well not out but this this can we put it up here in the grass be nice to roll around on that okay here we go hopefully not going to get this doje stuck in the grass here wow this backup camera looks like a potato underwater that's pretty neat all right well there's uh there's really nothing to hold a chain on I'm afraid I'm gonna pull the leaf spring out of the higher Ender of this thing but I ain't got no option oh great didn't even look if we got wind in all four tires but it is what it is [Music] easy but faster but slower come on now come on out of there whoa stay cats hey she's a roller dump okay anyway well this would be better I didn't realize it was Gonna Roll that good which is great but I don't want it to go down the hill into Cananda but this is out of the poison ivy just into some weird mold looking plants that have spikes hanging out of them oh here's some more right here okay I wonder if I can just why it does roll good easy well that'll work well that'll work just fine well there we go now we could take a close look at this fire turkey see what we're working with definitely not come up with a plan but just start doing things that hopefully eventually make it running Drive yeah okay well let's take a close look of course 78 is really popular because the Smokey and the bandits you know Burt Reynold and this is one of the more favorite front ends this Grille headlight combo they got a little weird in 79 I'm gonna be honest and going up 78's a nice looking rig and doesn't have the shaker hood so it doesn't have like the TA package or anything fancy like that this is going to be the a spirit model there's a Firebird the spirit the Trans Am and you know there was a bunch of different codes and options and additions 78 had the Red Hawk Edition red birds I don't know it's red with the red gold package that was kind of a 78 thing this one appears to have originally been Dresden blue or believe but we can verify here in a bit but like I was saying earlier we already saw a hook of the chain on this thing is a complete rot box unfortunately needs full quarters lots and lots of weight reduction someone already tried at one point ah we'll just pretend that didn't happen at all guardsman 40. tires that are dry rotted lots of tread that's too bad rotten here rotted out under there not even going to look at the spring cups I'm assuming those are completely gone as well well look at the shock rotted wheel wells are rotted I guess the guy that bought it from the original owner didn't like the powder blue so to speak and fogged her with this flat black kind of color that's where that came from uh if you look close it's starting to Bubble a little bit might be some rest coming but you can't really see it yet there Hood's in great shape let's talk about that for a minute I don't even think there's a hail dent in it I mean that's 50 bucks you know what I mean Grill is a pretty good shape still got the emblem on it plastic's not ripped off on the bottom this one doesn't appear to have jumped a crick yet but we could change that lots of I don't know lichen lichens mold stuff touch rust over here you can hardly tell on this side either I'm assuming the Rockers are just completely gone but there's that fancy Chrome strip down there just holding her together you know well okay whoops the sides a little bit worse see all the salts and stuff gets plowed to the Drinker side of the vehicle and it piles up on the edge of the road so in the winters you'll notice in the salt States the Drinker side is always worse that's why everything gets plowed off to the sides and this side continually takes you know the grunt of it we'll say a little bit of window leak some sort of hopping animal in there taking a nap I guess hello we got work to do no he's down we had the Burt Reynolds antenna that's approved this is pretty good I mean this is looking up normally this is rotted out in here in this Channel and that's not the roof Channel which I already mentioned is looking pretty good but this is devastating that's a lot of work right there gonna need a lot of support repaired it's going to need the dash repaired get real close to the VIN there things of that nature overall sure it's a Firebird it's got all the center caps what do you want okay all right well let's go ahead and jump into the trunk here I do have ignition keys for this so you've seen the show this is like lightning on the bottle I ain't kidding you I like to start in the trunk because it tells the whole story look I've been doing this for two decades now and I can't tell you how many times people get frustrated with the project or they started repairing don't finish it or whatever it may be everything ends up in the trunk so for me just to kind of mentally prepare how terrible my day is going to be I'd like to start back here and drink up the clues and then open the power bar see what I'm saying you could ease into it it's like a step program okay seems to be the right key it's like opening a pyramid in Egypt sounds slightly less valuable boy the humidity is really helping the smell today wow we got some neat stuff in here actually really neat giant mouse house oh there's Marty no wonder he wasn't coming to work what a slacker that guy gave up pretty nice Mouse house though there's the firebird Badges and the esper badge look at this Factory spare still has the inflation bottle the Jack Parts doesn't look like it's ever been look at the bottom of it it's never been used ever that's really cool it's got the factory trunk lining it's got the sticker in it more evidence that this is a low mileage car for sure and it burns oil we're missing some molding and there's our color of choice it appears oh I see they were they were slowing down the rust with the undercoat that's what was going on sort of got some ruggage in here look how nice that is yep that's about it good news is no engine parts and I would have bet money this decklid was shot and it's in good shape Fellers Wow might get away with just quarters huh Stop Parking these under trees Fellers see this what happens that's where all that rock comes from there we go good shape good shape well I suppose it's time let's get onto the power bar and see what flavor we got I don't know what we got yet for flavor in here we'll figure it out though listen Pontiac was kind of the stepchild of the GM I said it so they had a bunch of weird engine configurations in these things and I some of them were great but listen they had like the 231 V6 from Buick they had a 250 straight six Chevy yeah the Pontiac 301 oh Pontiac 301 turbo then you had the Chevy 305 and of course the Oldsmobile 350 for whatever reason on the Chevy 350 and then Pontiac you know had the 400 and then the Pontiac also had the 403 and then you might have the Oldsmobile 455 or the Pontiac Pontiac engines there was options this is what I'm saying and you just never really know what you're going to get we definitely know it's not the greatest but can it get us home and we've got small blockage we've got a we've got a 305. sweet we really you know we'll boil them tires with 180 horse you know but listen small block Chevy we could drive that around the world and I ain't kidding you we got completed I think lots of mouse damage in here lots of it lots of it but I mean oh my gosh the control arms are almost rotted off this that's fine HEI cap looks to been replaced 50 years ago looks like a two barrel corporate blue of course everything's here though AC pump is still here with the belt well let me just get you in here looks like the radiator was serviced November of 1987. so that's that's positive you know the mice Love This Hood insulation stuff and they've just been all over the place I could see him making nests under the air filtration system as well but we got charging whirler water pump still on it look at that AC pump that's been serviced it's got some marker or writing or something on it wash your jug stunt look at that control arm down there oof domain but it's all here appears to be I'm trying to look at the wiring right now because of the mice and uh it doesn't look like they got into the wiring too bad albeit there's houses everywhere okay well fuel pumps even in there this is going to be tough to work on it's so Rusty if we've got to dig into anything chances are rounded off broken bolts stripped this and that is likely very we're going to take a look at the trim tag here we can we'll see uh built in 78 24b that's the light blue interior and 22 22 this is the paint code that's um not Dresden but uh Glacier blue so that's Glacier blue it must be just a little more faded but yeah Blue on Blue I bet it was a beautiful car back in the day speaking of which let's jump inside check out the interior see how many miles this has uh uh mice lots of mice nice interior medium blue I was a heavy smoker that's unfortunate but burn up the seals any it doesn't look like Anyway thus far mice dropping is just everywhere in this thing yeah I got the aircon the dash is beautiful got a nice FM station radio box thing here in all the aptitude modulation of frequency modulation that's the sound waves in the sky we've got some stuff oozing out of the back both sides I'll show you here in a little bit headliner has been removed it's probably cellulating I'm gonna guess mileage says 56 452 and again the original owner who lives across the streets guarantees that that's accurate exterior looks like it's 58 million interior not shabby well I'll bring you in here you can look nice looking door cards in this rig I think these would clean up very easily and look at this there's not a lot of wear at all this isn't cracked broken the knob isn't significantly loose or wallered out all signs of low mileage cars got a lot of water leaking in them yet but anyway look how nice this Dash is beautiful Dash it's in really really good shape it's not delaminating or anything like that and again we see 56 452 miles there the wheel isn't terrible you can see where whoever was driving it liked to hook their fingers over the wheel there nice crisp Linker stick and then the pedals of course so yeah I agree this is pretty cool that's actually really cool 56 000 original mile rig here let's see if I can flip this forward all right I got more uh exterior paint it's got a transmission leak oh yeah kind of like to cruise in style nice looks like a winter seat cover Maybe boy the mouse droppings are just they're everywhere seats in really good shape yet though look at that the piping's all good 2010 and 11 fishing guide oh B he took her fishing that's pretty cool what was that 12 years ago 15 years ago something like that radio is just Immaculate condition this thing is going to clean up really nice on the inside it's just too bad the outside took such a beating check out the Drinker side here again we got a really nice store card a little trim ring missing there safety goggles oh here we go come back now they got the Bears why'd you win sailed I don't think that's actually you're not supposed to do that without the antenna hooked up anyway GE mobile CB Trans Receiver this must have been oh Corpus crispy well that modification is already completed [Music] let's just I think this would just screw right in if we get this running we're talking the tractors all the way home you know what I mean see if we can get in front of a cab over run some interference there shoo what else a guy needed to do all right I don't know what we got I'm just I got to stop digging through that stuff I'm gonna need to run a mouse sucker through here right away weird that they put the dark blue belts in with the light blue interior but that's just the way she goes so there we have it 78 Firebird 305 powered air conditioning cloth interior light blue low Mouse 56 000 miles now let's see if we can get it running so the first thing a guy is going to need to do here is just make sure this engine still rolls over and rotates nothing is stuck or jamming up and then we can move on to because it got Sparkles because they're going to light fire then we gotta make sure it's gonna get fire and then we can try to light this thing off and if it runs we got to pay attention to head gaskets and intake gaskets and well basically all of the gaskets does it have oil pressure is it making oil pressure and then also the transmission we got Gears we're going to need them to get home and lastly if we have time or feel like it you know bearings and baby breaks brakes might be slightly ideal we got a long drive I think Cleveland down to rule and then down to Nashville and there's a lot of City driving so it might be good to have the wide pedal under the dash working you know what I mean let me grab a croissant wrench see if this thing rotates my lahoon way I did leave the doors open on the bird it smells like a rubber boot full of hot coleslaw but just a hint of mouse droppings no invert that let's start with the mouse right it's bad so I got them hanging open we got a breeze going today it's nice and cool hopefully that'll just fix itself nope it won't anyway the easiest laziest way to test an engine is if it has a mechanical or direct drive fan where it's bolted directly to the water pump pulley you can just spin on that this has a you know a dozen has a clutch fan so it's not that one so that's not going to work the next easiest laziest or away if you got a charging world or belt use that pulley and we'll crank on this and apply some pressure to the belt let's see if this engine rotates yep hear that little crack that's normal that's uh typically valve springs from sitting so long they kind of just I don't know they just always pop like that okay she's rotating well we got an acorn okay that's great news big step just cross that one off now we gotta move on to spark and fuel but before we even get to that we should probably put a battery in this do a fire test see if the starter is even in the car and if that works oh boy mice were busy there she is oh ain't that a cutie patootie it ain't locked up I like that still has the original fuel line in it that ain't been cut up and had 16 different wrong filters in it I'll be dipped man just need like a I need an airboat with twin Big Blocks right here just blow on this oh yeah your mouth makes wind that's pretty neat I'm gonna do a little bit of house cleaning here trying to make this easier to work on we're we're going to be here a couple days I have a feeling muscle just get it done you know what I mean I think I got it a tickle better although it doesn't look like anything changed I'm gonna get the support brace all relay here they Swang like that and then we can get this itty bitty little battery out put a different one in fire test this thing and then we'll Twist on the ignition stick and see if that actually does anything looks like there's a starter in it hopefully still works we can rotate this thing a few times make sure there's no issues bound up valve Crane or who knows extra window on the Block interference issues I just I am not a fan of these side post batteries what about you guys you like the side posts or you like the top post batteries I'm a top post kind of battery filler especially because you can just stall them stuff let me know leap Loop it down there in the comments which one do you like better get out of there almost hit Canada okay let me go get mine very specific reason I got this battery no it was literally just the cheapest one with these annoying side posts on it okay oh no never see that again I'm seeing it again oh they got the it's got the post on the wrong side of the post I ain't getting all the way down there to change that oh wait no this okay I worked on this back in 97. I remember now I got tricked on see I thought my red and then my negative cable One reach but no that's the this is supposed to be the sad cable this one brings the juice so someone with equal thinking of myself just said wow this but that'll be fine we'll remember you know which one which there's a three plus three camper special back here square body I want real bad probably worser or rustier but I still want it I was supposed to run and drive though but if you guys would be interested in just trying to bomb something like that that potentially already runs home bleep bloop it I don't know I don't know what's going on right now what I do know is we better check the soil before we crank on this thing and if we're lucky it might even start building oil pressure as we're testing things here throughout the day so when we do light it off it's going to Boom immediately have oil pressure and if you have a rig that you know run but it's sad for a while it's not a bad idea to disconnect the ignition and just crank on it for 20 seconds or however long it takes to build oil pressure first then hook up your lightning and fire it off because typically these are cranking 250 to 350 RPM nice and low and when you fire them up you gotta you know older cars your pepper and the throttle to keep them running 1500 2500 rpm and the oil pressure even for just five seconds is tremendously worse than just cranking on it for 20. okay I'm just keeping in mind I know you know I'm just saying okay we got I don't know I don't know what's going on here it's a full of water let me get a rag try this again I don't like the way that's looking might just be a little bit of moisture in the tube here it looks like it's 50 gallons over full but can't be maybe it is Derek you don't know well I'm just saying that's at least double check it you know it's sitting I know now is the time to pull well that's why I was telling you idiot anyway there we go it's full right on the money oh wow what is that processing processing processing processing some more yep it's water well I tried to tell you that okay we got water in the oil and so let me test the viscosity here that's got some left we could fire it on this for just a few seconds but we're gonna have to change the oil immediately moisture is creeping in if this would have sat any longer good chance this could have blocked up iron Alcatraz I could I don't know why I did that just pretend you didn't see that I guess okay one more thing a guy is going to do click there it is disconnect the fuel line to the pump before we start turning on this thing like a vinyl record you know what I mean we don't know what's in the tank I will say you've heard me say this 3912 times we're going to need the capacity now we've made it home on field drugs albeit but it's a pain in the rumpkus and I ain't kidding you so if we can pull this off crank it over check the fuel system out even if it's a little rusty we can double up on filters you know like a bad date night but we can just swap one out in front put another one in if we have to or switch them around stuff like this and uh hopefully we can limp this thing along with the actual tank so we don't have to stop every 50 miles that becomes just such a Time waster okay all right I need a plier oh my God one on my hip because that's yeah if you guys ain't carrying Leatherman what are you even doing you got it get yourself one okay finally got this thing off it's so rotted it just split and blew it up but at least that's unhookered now so that's not going to suck a lid on any bad gas leanage now we'll crank it see what we got all right now don't bring the Thunder just show me some dark storm clouds we didn't do a fire test blower motor works I'll be dipped well it says this off huh buzzer works well kind of guy just see the line on that motor that's gonna get pretty pretty annoying anyway here we go oh yeah wow I think this one just has a dummy light for oil pieces right oh it's got a gauge okay let's Crank It Again no oil pressure all right there it goes building pressure wow 40. with junky oil at crank that's great news we might got a healthy little small block on her hands okay starter works Flex plates doing flexi things we got oil pieces we're moving along Let's uh let's test for Sparkles next so when I'm working on a coil and points ignition system typically I like to use a digital meter and test the coil before we even get started and look at the points because that's almost always the issue especially the points when they sit forever they get like a sulfur or crud built up on them just file them out check the Gap make sure the coil is good and they'll work just fine but this is an HEI they're extremely extremely reliable and they can sit for years and typically not have any issues so I'm not even going to crack that cap off I'm seeing the 12 volt or that big orange wire that's the power wire to the coil and everything inside it you know the science is in there that looks intact so we're just going to leave that b and I'm going to go straight down here and we're just going to test it add our sparkulator you know the end result if we have spark grape if we don't then we'll work backwards I'm also going to go ahead and pull that spark lighter out and just glance on it first just doubly check her make sure or that we don't have any you know physical conditions or anything weird going on with the engine on the inside before we keep cranking on it you can get fancy electronics and doodads and AFR meters and blah blah scan your papers on a spark later it's going to tell you everything you need to know about this engine how it's running the condition in which it's running you name it that's what we're going to do real quick this thing spun over really evenly did you hear that were you even paying attention there wasn't any gallops nothing funky I didn't hear anything's bending or making weird noises which is good even if it runs poorly at least it's poorly across the board great boy everything is just so Rusty still got the heater shields on it I mean the manifolds have never come off no one's wanted to put headers on this thing it's just too bad it's so Rusty but that's why a guy can get into these cars so cheap you can get an under 60 000 mile Firebird for nothing oh yeah I mean that's richer than Elon what kind of plug is this that's weird Bosch platinum yes but it's running rich but nonetheless she was firing so I'm gonna Jam this back in good enough for now I don't see any reason to spend 50 bucks on Sparkle lighters at this point I would like to see AC delco's in here like a 44 45 TS but you know this makes fire so we'll stick this back in and then we'll put a tester in line see if we got sparkles all right sparklators back in I got in line on the lightning hose here this little tester you've seen this before and that light's gonna flash if there's a good enough spark coming through that hose so I'm gonna go Twist on the key you guys stay here and watch that light bulb and you got to tell me if that thing's flashing hopefully we got spark we don't got to dig into this you might you're going to have to probably scoot closer you want to get get your face in there and look now because I can't see it well what do we got hit me with the TPS report oh we got Sparkles you did see it okay well you have to wait so long to tell me you know what I mean that's Plan B anyway okay here's the plan don't have one but what if in and a guy could a guy just throw some fire maker down the app and just hear it bark off because if it goes bang and Clank and ching and Chang then we're taking the three plus three home but if it just fires and sounds pretty decent then we can move on to makes your fuel system now we got to change the oil we got to check the coolant I should actually look at the blood stick on the shift machine if it ain't going forward going backwards automatically we're in trouble it's always a good idea to do that before we fire them up we don't want to burn that pump out and that transmission accidentally and cause the issue also keep getting distracted by this old white 74 ton truck isn't this thing cool thought about getting her going but missing some lightning hoses and I don't see any barbed wire fences nearby or anything like that she's a little worse for wear but man I love this old stuff so simple back then but it works so good look at that rear end straps so cool this guy's really supposed to check this running obviously but I just want to make sure there's not Pepsi Cola oh man we got red juice flying every Murder She Wrote oh two things forgot to take Flonase this morning whoops second thing we got synthetic Atif in here and she is a red that is also great news I keep forgetting that this is only 56 000 miles and obviously no one's doing like standing burnouts or anything crazy in this thing so the transmission should still transmit power from the engine to the rear end of the vehicle well that's the Hope anyway let me get something that's uh flammable how am I getting so dirty I haven't even done anything since I flew in I'm working with extremely minimal tools here I got a Harbor Freight tool kit basically and a Leatherman so I don't have things like Malone wolf 6000 and other stuff so that's all right okay we're dumping some of this in here that was way too much even got it on my arm this is just a true fuel you don't want the false fuel get the true stuff it's got two-cycle oil in it it doesn't wash your rings now you've you've heard this okay don't fog it down with ether and break cleaning carb cleaner I'm gonna Twist on the key UE all fire when that happens never see that again okay I'm gonna jump in twist the key when you see flames let me know hopefully it just fires up though that would just be nice we built oil pressure so we shouldn't hear the valve train even Clank and Clack oh it's clocking but it runs oh that's my favorite part it runs Let's uh let's do that again valve train was noisy there for just a few seconds and it it calmed down see if I can all right let's try it again what's up see if the idle circuit's gonna go it is wow it's smoking but that's not panic yet still got about 30 just under 40 pounds of oil pressure like 38. clacking up here not terrible remember the oil is not the greatest either [Music] yes we might be driving home in a Camaro wait it's not it's a fire turkey with a Camaro engine I don't know what's happening anymore it could be in osoville it's not though obviously we gotta test this while it's running yeah come back now got the firebird running in the backyard the firebird's running anybody out there Firebird is up nothing yet we'll keep working on it it does turn on how is it still running I just filled the bowls all what might as well see if it's charging I've never had a car to sit and idle like this often just fill in the bowl it's charging says less than quarter tank a little under 40 pounds oil pressure I think it's finally running out of fuel clock's not working huh well I got some of the best news we've had in a long time fellas and fellas the CB radio works it clicked right on the speaker worked I was able to change the channel and all that stuff oh and the engine runs that's pretty neat I think what we're going to do now is I need to change that oil quick that's about all the further I want to run it with what's in there but it also is important to heat up what's in there and get all that sludge and bad oil essentially down to the bottom of the pan so we do change it we're getting as much as we can also pumping some of that through the old filter not a bad idea we'd pull a filter off new filter you know the story there another thing to mention because it's commonly misconstrued which I think is a French lady that sweeps floors for a living but is also an English word oil doesn't really go bad it doesn't lose its viscosity from sitting but when it gets contaminants like oil and antifreeze and gasoline and other things like that that's when the formula which creates its viscosity obviously starts to get watered down or changes but if you've got a rig that's sat three ears and you change the oil 500 miles ago you don't need to change it run it this still oil in it you know what I mean anyway let's jack up the bird drops of oil let's see if a guy can get this little bubba Jack under here and if in will it do something um condenser support so rotted it's about to fall out at least I parked this on a hill instrumental add music foreign now it's a tipping like that's kind of guy get his belly under there is a question I was crawling under this uh change the oil I mean looks like uh we're gas chugging it again oh and that's the your brake line by the way oh wow terpsky 350 already leaking from cranking it hmm big old California converter [Music] wow this thing's smoked on here wow this guy can really dance [Music] oh man there we go [Music] finally STP decent brand at least course we gotta go back with the Wicks here that'll work [Music] oh that felt good all the drain plugs in and everything for oil I'm almost the old standby repella T4 heavy duty diesel oil it's got all the vitamins minerals a guy needs being cheap didn't buy a funnel tried to Sky pour this from the county over and well let's just say it's got two quarts in it that should be fine I'm Gonna Fill This back up with some fuel here and let it run a little bit longer it seemed like I wanted to go for a couple minutes there start heating this thing up little by little I want us to make sure the head gaskets come around if them ain't right boil boil we got some work to do on our hands and then we'll start looking for any obvious leaks sir other issues things of that nature we should also test the transmission this time see if we got the backwards gear and the go forwarders gear I would that would also be convenient just saying air cleaner there all right this time we're bringing the Thunders oh what a sweetheart fasten your seat belts okay we got oil pressure over 40 pounds now [Music] all right worth a box of red Just Go For Crying in the mud I got more steps today and then Shakira gotta check that I'm gonna check the chip juice again now that it's running that sounds weird must be low on Ice Cube juice sounds like the water pumps itself oh my goodness well it's probably gonna overheat the inside of this radiator looks like the battle of the Titanic that's good [Music] yeah she's a little low probably about a quart and 1 16. I'm qualified we're just any of that and we're gonna have to do something with the radiator all right I'm gonna get it off the Jack of jack stands and that's that means it's cold or it doesn't move oh she bit on a little too much all right let's fire it up test the shift machine I guess we could roll this down oh there's so many years of needles stuck in there thank you easy don't waste all the fuel brake pedal all the way to the floor absolutely nothing perfect Drive oh yeah whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa we might have to go under reverse here reverse yep okay straight apart I ain't got no brakes the brakes also on the floor so that doesn't work perfect but that's the radio oh yeah she's a cruiser excellent news that's still smoking and it's got a transmission but a lot of that could be the two-stroke oil nope probably not John you know the guy about this show real nice old boy he told me two things should run it does and he also said oh yeah by the way we're parked because the brakes don't work so the master cylinder is just shot on this thing and uh not only does it go to the floor which he also told me it did you can look on the booster and see that oil has just been pouring down this thing for decades pretty common when the seal gets shot you hit the pedal and it the brake fluid just leaks past the Piston comes right out the back and it either leaks into the cabin of the vehicle or on the face of the brake booster which is what we got going on this thing this is going to be a slippery slope this thing is so badly rusted that One Snap brake line can turn into two three days stuck here replacing everything I had really let's hope that's the slope that's slippery and it's full of snow and toothpicks let's not get there okay but anyway we got to replace this master cylinder it runs it's got Gears it's got to stop Target identified so as you can see she's been leaking for a long long time we just got to deal with this thing that's why the rig was parked up I'm sure the lions were Rusty then and I don't blame them it's just such a tremendous undertaking if you've not done it a lot or don't have experience replacing brake lines and breathing bleeding brake systems it could be something else so these are the two lines that I'm concerned about well they're the only two lines I guess there's concern it's thick you can cut it with a fork if we Bend this pipe off and then we gotta make a line down to this but if I round that fitting off then we could maybe have to put a distribution block in or if I snap the other pipe off but then what if I snap this curlicue pipe that goes down into the fitting that goes under here I guarantee you all these lines are so brittle well and the other thing I just realized this thing finally builds brake pressure with the new master cylinder every line in this rig could blow out immediately then we are in it all the way so let's see what happens first thing guys got to do is get some heat in this listen you ain't got a butane torch in your top dresser drawer what are you what are you doing come on man style is back I didn't realize I got map pass not propane Maps a little hot definitely brings the Heat I'm gonna warm these up a little bit you want to get the fitting not only the fitting but the reservoir It's tricky because we want the fitting to expand over the line but we need the reservoir to expand over the fitting just hit it all with heat okay then my juice is laying on the ground for some reason here's some juice them up and I'm going to do this for about 15 minutes and you're gonna know when it's ready when you spread juice on here and it sizzles and dissipates immediately that means you got enough Heat and the juice is probably also done its job it's your best chance of getting these fittings off without snapping them let's just let's just pray you know what Deana Carter's doing and Sarah Evans seems like the tour still there's a John Deere lawn tractor back there and I sold Barn did you see this chisel drag up again the tree it looks pretty nice not gonna lie John said he'd sell me that three by three but I don't know it's a lot of money and he said it'd probably fire right off so I don't know what to do with it I mean I know what to do with it but then it'd just be a road trip you know all right she's fresh and hot out the kitchen oh it was in the wrong slot oh no we gotta re-hot it I like all these dead needles and flammable liquids around here whilst doing this come on now yes oh front one is out or it's loose it's going yes 50 there oh yes it did not twist the line home run do we tell you what I'm gonna buy me some scratch off tickets with my Mad Dog tonight and eat way too much sodium because that right there was lucky I mean that's that's rare it's rarer than an ex-wife apologizing let's put it that way somebody's running a Honda Civic no muffler sounds great no no it doesn't let's get this thing off [Music] foreign [Music] and all these hoses and pipes I'm going to help you understand here we need to bench bleed this master cylinder but well we ain't got no bench but don't worry we're going to save time and effort anyway because we're going to use the vehicle itself as our bench and to Pedal in the vehicle I got this little cheap bleeder kit thingy from the parts store power power torque Performance Tool and it's got these rubber hoses I think this is how you can figure it and I pinched it down with the thing but basically we could fill up the reservoir both of them and we'll pump the pedal and it's going to push fluid back into the reservoir and you let go it's going to pull fluid and not air and we can continually do this until we're only getting fluid out and no air so this is blood correctly now normally I'd like to have a line going into each but these weren't long enough and this isn't long enough to cut in half so I'm kind of stuck if you don't want to do it this way a similar way which is more expensive unfortunately is by the copper clad steel brake lines with the fittings and you can just hand bend them into each Reservoir and pump it that way if you're going to jam but that way is a little bit more expensive any hoose this should work we're just gonna have to watch that reservoir on the back side there because there's no fluid returning back to it as I slowly pump this thing see the fluid going out going back out we're just going to keep doing this until those air bubbles disappear got a leg workout looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger okay no bubbles in the lines that's good enough for who it's for okay I'm just going to pop these off quick screw the lines back in we'll hit the brakes a few times push some fluid through top it off again be careful not to run those dry and force more air through and then if I could break these bleeders we just might try to gravity bleed them look they did it since the 20s it works and after we snap the Bladers off ruined the caliper bend the line and crack it then we'll start replacing everything there's also a good chance that these soft lines are going to be constricted we'll have to see if that's hopefully not the case well yeah massive brake line failure I okay well I found this one this is a curly cue Bob that used to run to the Drinker side that was replaced with homemade curlicue bomb which is now blowing out where it was zip tied to the old curlicue Bob and gathered a bunch of rust from the rotten a arm and frame and that is spraying right out onto the manifold there so basically there's no right front brake rear is holding somehow right now great but I'm gonna have to go through this I need front brakes 70 stopping I'll run without rear brakes any day but it'd be nice to have at least front brakes and I'm thinking there's some concrete up here in front of the shed if a guy could get this fired up and ease it up there on the concrete it'd be a lot easier to get the Jack under there and make sure the jack stands are you know semi-stable and then we can root around and try to figure out how to replace lines and all that stuff this is gonna we're on that slope with toothpicks again my tires showed up hopefully we get to that point so I gotta get from back there over probably knows they're in right here I checked with the owner he's cool let them know I'm gonna spill some break juice just gonna throw this thing in Reverse no brakes well actually it's really fitting first time it's moving under its own power and yours is no brakes so where she goes sometimes got the card Bowl topped off probably give me about 30 seconds of run time I got a scoot here we go oh I keep forgetting smelling here okay it's running reverse it's going first time in years oh I need to slow down we've gotten a lot of steam well we got the firebird moved over here first time moving under its own power in many years gonna get the jack and jack stands go grab the tool kit come around front get this front end off get that tire off see if we can fix this brake line well guys got her up on jack stands again just a closer look at well it's pretty much the whole car all of the structure everywhere is just she's rotten so anyway let's replace this brake line and drive it 700 miles okay glad this thing rolls good at least yes oh sweet I can't wait looks there's so much there's a lot of fun yes here's the other end of that broken line on this side so we're going to snap this one off and I guess we'll add a third line to the bunch here well maybe we'll try to let me work under here and see how it might have a bunch of those clips with the bolts holding them in and that's why they zip tied this one to the old one it might be a bear let me get onto there and take a look well I'm a travel Fellers can't get the fitting off it's rotted into the rotten soft line fitting that's rotten to the rotten fitting on the caliper can't get the rotten fitting off of the rotten Junction block by the other rot lines and every time I twist that it's ruining the other rotten lines and then I got to inspecting the rear line there's 54 pin holes in that so it'll definitely be no rear brakes so I'm either to the point where I got to try to Barrel on a fitting going to the right front and hope that front brakes are enough or I've gotta hit the hardware store and get a junction block and try to make my own brake system quick like a secondary one and just ignore all this rotted broken so this is probably the worst brake lines worse than the Bland National was everything's shot so I'm gonna run to the hardware store see if they even have the rights the one I'm worried about is the 7 16 fittings on the quarter inch line those are a little bit hard to get if I could find all the fittings for a a distribution block I might go that route but on to the parts store see what I can get well guys we are down the lake with six paddles and looking good I got this out had to cut a bunch of lines I saved these two because these are the two that I wanted to save because the rear needs to be replaced anyway at minimum the two fronts this is the one that I couldn't get out while I was in the vehicle and you can see here I've been trying I even ran to the store and got vice grips and it's there's it's not coming out they're just melting off this proportioning valve is shot called around everywhere here's the issue first of all out of the 13 part stores are called only one person knew in a brake proportioning valve was I take that back another person did but he thought I was building a race car so it was O'Reilly that knew what it was they ordered one it's not here until 10 30 tomorrow should be on the road tomorrow so that's great so I think what I'm going to do tonight is tear into the rest of the brake system the pickle I'm going to have is finding the right fittings for the proportioning valve that's coming in which is not vehicle specific it's for like an S10 pickup I it's we're gonna have to Cobble do some Magics is what I'm saying so I'm just gonna hunker down I got maybe an hour or so left to Daylight today try to get as much done on the brakes up front so tomorrow I could pick up that valve plop that in and try to make that work and then we got to get on the road as fast as possible man I'm not used to wearing these things I wasn't getting Barons I saw a bunch of Auto Packer things and tools to pack bearings and whatnot I packed these by hand I always have this just the way I was taught but it got me to thinking what do you guys do do you pack them by hand still or do you use one of those it looks like a cup or something almost like something you'd see in a kitchen I'm guessing you just smack the two together I don't know I'm gonna go ahead and put inner and outer wheel bearings seal new rotors I got some calipers for it they were dirt cheap and of course pads miles will just make sure the fronts are up and up we don't got to worry about it that way then then we should have new lines whenever I get to that and the distribution block or proportioning valve is going to be in tomorrow the rears we might try to run a stick back there and they're going to kind of just be you know whatever it is is what it is because this thing only needs what it needs you know what I mean we don't need to go crazy here we're not trying to do a restoration by any means trying to get home so it's starting to rain right now that's coming down pretty good and I don't know where the I think there's some fires up in Canada or something because it's I thought it was fog all day but almost seems like smoke but I don't got much time left today I'm just going to try to smash these rotors on quick and might have to call it after that when you use the bottom side of the jack stand it's a flat surface the ones that I got and I could set that in here and whack it with the hammer and drive them seals in nice and flush [Music] thank you well the guys kind of got everything picked up for tonight got the rotors calipers new soft lines and I misspoke I'm gonna go ahead and reuse the old brake pads because they had plenty of life left and I could save 40 bucks so I'm gonna go ahead and reuse those so I'm going to swing by O'Reilly's on the way to the motel return those brake pads uh gonna turn in the core on the calipers 12 bucks a piece on them and then there's a 20 bounty on that battery so I grabbed that turn all that back into the store throw some groceries down my neck get a little bit of rest supposed to rain off and on all night hopefully it's dry by the time we get here bright and early gotta run a bunch of lines figure out what we're going to do for fuel capacity still have to go through all the little things in this car we basically just fired it up and moved it 20 yards and hanging over our head is 700 miles home so that's neat but we'll see you guys tomorrow morning bright and early [Music] it's eight o'clock on the dot I'm in my Dodge Ram cruising the streets I got a real real Rusty Firebird waiting on me now in reality it's late morning I've been driving all over this town and the town next to this town in the town on the other side all the towns all the parts stores trying to find all of the fittings listen I've got inverters and doodabs and cut we're going to have Dr Seuss breaks right now it's Dr Seuss breaks but before we get into this I got some information on that old white truck back there last night by John the previous owner and I just gotta share this with you I'm just geeking out over this thing so let's go back there and take another look at it so I got a lot of info on this truck thanks to John I had no idea he had such extensive history or knowledge on this vehicle and I just had to share this with you this is what was called a pay truck and it was much larger but there's a section of frame and well there's some things missing think of it like the earliest form of armored car and well the best way to explain it is look at this picture this pay truck used to pay the workers at the U.S steel Works in Lorraine Ohio it was used from 1925 through the 1940s after which paper checks were issued so there wasn't a reason to have the truck but basically armed guards would surround this truck and drive it up to this dock or steps essentially to pay workers in cash for all their labor it was retired in 1965 and then donated to the legion and that's where they acquired it from this truck still ran in 1965 they had hopes of restoring it and doing some parade stuff with it but as you can see it would be a massive undertaking and this is just such a unique vehicle and they actually have a letter from the president CEO of white with all the details and how the sink was constructed and back in the day this was this was the Batman rig it had a bulletproof transmission it had dual magnetos just in case one failed it was even designed to run for 30 minutes or up to 30 minutes with no cooling system so if anybody tried to Rob this thing well good luck you think about you know vehicles in 1920. this thing would just run it over basically but I just I had to share this this thing is so darn cool oh and the last thing with these tires back then probably not by today's standard but back then we these were some of the first bulletproof tires how's your brain now anyway let's get back to the Dr Seuss break program I've got about 79 flares to make and do dabs and fittings and whatnots this thing is going to look like a sprinkler system at a golf course every time I hit the brake pedal but it's we're gonna I need something I got no juice pipes at all right now oh great so basically we got to take this and recreate that didn't have one for 78 Firebird how about an 82 S10 yep okay well there there we go the problem is these fittings are all unique and last night when I turned the course I threw this in the dumpster at O'Reilly's so the first thing I had to do this morning was go dumpster diving and luck would have it they took all the trash out like they're supposed to every night so that was a lot of fun thank you can't get that fitting out we're gonna have adapter adapter to do dab to Barrel to adapter to another adapter here going to the fit in there to the other adapter I need to cut these two off because they're impossible to find and apparently on tanium that goes to the you know the Wardrobe up on the and then I'm going to make these juice pipes first get this in the vehicle so we can start mocking everything up [Applause] [Music] all right [Music] [Applause] [Music] well the guy's got her in but it ain't nothing pretty but it's gonna work you know good enough for who it's for we got right front left front down here and then of course rear out the back of being optimistic otherwise we could put a pipe plug in that if we need to the fear here is working with the old Brakes in the back and having to bleed this thing I don't have the tool to keep this safety shuttle from locking out the rear so bleeding this could end up being a complete disaster so I guess we're going to have to wait and see uh I guess we'll start working on the fronts running some lineup a lot of you might be wondering what are all those curlicues for in original Factory style systems these usually have a curlicue and then these will have a couple curlicues and then they run down to the tabs on the frame Etc some people believe while they're to hold more fluid so you could build more pressure and that's actually not the case it's very simple the coils are just for flexibility when the car is driving it's flexing and moving and all of this and those coils allow the the juice pipe essentially to be able to move and expand and flex and doesn't put stress on the fittings well we're not going to do any of that of course because we're not in the position to be making Fancy curlicues with springy Bobs wrapped around them or whatnot I just need a pipe that does this into that you know what I might even go over the engine I don't know yet okay yeah I said it the other one just drops right down into there so I've got the fitting on over there and the initial Bend and then on this side I just looped it through the frame tab and as I bend it to the cross member I'll pull it through here that kind of keeps shaping it and then I'm going to pull extra out put the fitting on and then push it back or at least that's the idea well here's our unfortunate answer on the frame and the spring pocket this car is I'm afraid to touch this to be honest it's even worse back there so I don't think we're doing burnouts guys oh what's we're just we're gonna have to just try to nurse this thing back there's no other way to explain it replacing this rear line right now I think I'm going to try to hook hand probably right here would be the easiest than messing with this guy from across the street the original owner said he already replaced the lines once 42.9 years ago that would be this line and this line the line up front that we saw and they're already rotted so I'm not going to try to mess with this fitting because then we're going to get into these and then we've got another nightmare so I'm going to try to break it free here see how it goes the rest of this could just be disregarded we're just going to tear it out and replace it well it looks like when that old boy was in here doing brake lines he must have done full breaks got lots of shoe left new Hardware in here looks like a new wheel cylinder so I'm not gonna have to touch any of that thankfully drums look like they drum billion of these little creatures jumped out of this wheel I don't know what them are got stingers and biters and everything so I think we're just going to crack these bleeders and gravity bleed the rears the front's been gravity blood I've been working on cleaning up the concrete here and I'll crack these and while this is going I'm going to load these tires into the rental truck I got to find a tire place to get these dry rotted tires swapped well the guy's got the tires dropped off at a little tire store in town gonna be about an hour for that so I got some time to kill here I got to thinking kind of did this on the backwards this time we got the Dr Seuss brakes working that's great but we still don't know if we got head gaskets or if it runs longer than three minutes or if the transmission is second or third gear or if any electrical works like tail lights brake lights or you know the headlights or any of that stuff and we still don't have a fuel tank that's pretty neat I think that's where I'm going to start is let me crawl under this thing with the condition of all the lines I have a feeling that that line might have been replaced as well we saw one that was just rotted and gone but maybe there's some rubber in this thing that we could try to replace I'd really like to try to use that tank in there because we need that capacity boy it'd be nice to just Jam this thing on the highway and go for a couple hours at a time instead of you know every 17 exits or whatever well sure enough look at here and man it's spliced in here this line I think has a hole in it where it's rotted but I'm going to take this off here see if I can blow through it and hear it in the tank don't look at any of this stuff or or try to suck fuel back out this way and just kind of see what it's looking like look at this big thing oof nope got a primer ball on here from a boat and unfortunately oh that's rotted all the lines into the tank so that's not gonna work so looks like we're uh throwing a Jerry can on the seat again sweet awesome yes started pulling some of this trash out of here so I can get a fuel jug ready and just realize that I could see the ground through the carpet so that's pretty neat you want them ankle vents I think it was only an option on the espirits oh all right let's get some of this out old rotted fuel line off the pump down there got this new line snagged in did zip a late tie it to the rotten control arm up here just to keep it off the manifold and look at this we're going race car stealth mode yeah normally we run them out here but now since there's no metal on the floors this is popping through right there so I gotta go get some gas and uh we'll throw that hose in there I got an extra stick a brake line a quarter inch this guy right here we're going to cut this and use this to put into the jug and we'll put a little Bend at the bottom and that'll be a nice little unit fellow guy's back with tires you saw these yesterday of course you got to go with a white ladder adds horsepower what are they yeah the BF goodriches the radials you know what I mean the old ones were 205 75 15 and so they were narrow had a really tall sidewall just looked dorky these are a two 35 60 15 so you can see they're wider they have a shorter sidewall they just fit the wheel wells better and give them more of that muscle car look I am h0 has to get safe also well I can't see I'm missing a trim ring I know I can't believe it either so I think I'm Gonna Knock the other three off it's got a match because we're building a show car here and I'll just uh toss them in the trunk or something so really they're going to look like this crazy thought because I'm running out of time it's nice to have at least a mile or two Shakedown before you bomb these on the interstate especially with no front or rear frame maybe we should run this through a car wash in one of the model magical ones main reason is free vacuum I can get all the mousy turds out of this thing guy carrying a baseball bat down the street for some reason seems friendly going down wow wow wow wow it's amazing what the right set of tires will do for a rig this will settle in on some Springs get rolled a little bit but it's looking better already this blue will wear away should be white that's just to protect the white letters huh okay got a jug of fuel let's fire this thing up now this will slide down in The Jug like that we even got a flare on this end throw a hose clamp on it and that way we get to full capacity I have the five gallon jug there we go and the way the floor is rotted the cans sitting like this which is perfect that's our Reserve System so all the fuel is going to go to the front there now I'm going to fill up this fuel making happening Bowl again we know it'll run off of that for we don't even know if the mechanical fuel pump works so we'll fill that up let it run enough for hopefully that's going to pull fuel from our NASCAR system and then we can let this thing sit and idle for a few minutes for the first time in many many many years there we go that's full cold start see if she'll fire off I don't even know if the accelerator pump works we don't even know if the carburetor really works oh I think I had her flooded yeah hopefully this cap isn't flooded either please pull fuel I'm gonna go fill the line should feel it pulsing I feel like pulsing I believe the mechanical fuel pump is pumping that's great because I did not feel like changing that right now boy those diaphragms are usually crispy hopefully the rad doesn't have a hole in it pretty weird it was just empty this stuff will sit for decades might have just been low looks like it's filling up with one gallon that's good well we got to check the dipstick continually and make sure we're not seeing any water or coolant on it that's pretty foamy I better grab the fire extinguisher it's looking a little spicy this is all the brake oil I forgot to clean off cut all over the manifold yesterday boy it seems to run pretty good so much sulfur and stuff in that cooling system 305 wait for the thermostat to open see how foamy that is it's not not typical since I was lazy and didn't change the sparklators we're going to go ahead and go with a real Rich mix he'll bear them this treats up to like 20 plus gallons one can but yeah we'll just throw our right in a five gallon jug this is going to make it smoke and stumble a little bit but this heavy of a mixture but it'll clean up them plugs for me and the valves and the combustion chamber it's been sitting so long I got a bunch of these for the trip I'll keep throwing them in the whole time It is charging that's good it's running nice and quiet high idle's kick down just still waiting for it to heat up I might stop and pick up a water pump for this hear that that's kind of odd so sounding oh we've got the Hickam UPS well it's been sitting running a good 20 minutes or so I even pulled the lights on the strain the alternator you know the old charging World there lit flip not because of the tube Bearer but fuel MPGs I got both headlights and I got tail lights so if we want to run on the night we can the downside to that is you know something happens we need parts or a tow oh I found a car wash here it's like seven miles long got laser beams and lights and all that stuff it's for the Lamborghinis and the porches and stuff go so we're gonna roll the rock Bird right in there and I got a couple concerns one leaks into the cab that's fine but I'm a little worried that the conveyor belt is just going to tear the car in half being that the front frame is rotted the back frame is rotted and there's no frame in between and the between is rotted didn't really think that's true but that's where we're going because I want the free Vacuums at the end to clean out the inside for the trip so let's jump in this thing made in Voyage straight to the car wash accelerator pump not happy not working very good it's a stalled on me a couple of times oh I just opened up a gaping hole in the floor it's the size of a football okay ankle Vantage full it shifted into second gear we're just we're cruising two foot in it but I gotta kind of levitate my feet otherwise they're going to get this ripped under the car brakes oh yeah it's got great brakes [Music] I selected the Platinum wash I made a mistake I think it has an undercarriage wash we have two tools in the front pumpkin to cover with the floor bed I got the whirly scrubbers not the microfiber whippers you need these smart balls there's dance club music playing that's it shouldn't there anymore except there be more fun that's not all we got more foam thank you it's just a lot of money not to get the phone you know I feel like we need water jets you got to get the needles out and that spray it first with the wand hey I didn't get an undercarriage wash I need five bucks back maybe that's later surface Shield there's a lot of needles left your put Tire sign on and I got a pile of needles and this thing that leak at all anywhere pretty impressed I'm sort of bump and rag that's not that's not doing anything I think that was okay very disappoint very disappointed I guess I got some of the mold off not completely on the hood still got just a mess going on in there took part of the quarter panel off that's fine I might have to take it to a self-serve and do it that way but here's why we're here well the interior cleaned up really nice haven't even wiped anything down yet but vacuumed anyway this happened on the way here that's just a giant uh you know well never mind we didn't see that so let's go find yet another wash and I'm gonna wash this by hand so I can clean up all the glass get all the needles and everything out of here this place has some good soap you don't see this a lot anymore people are so chintzy but man this washer got that nozzle turned all the way up but get the wind screen clean and get some more of these leaves and stuff out of here get the mold and the light skin or Lich skins or whatever you know Shell Car stuff I'll show you when I'm done here my economics did not work out very good paid 475 for a wash I could have paid two bucks for a vacuum and been money ahead but oh well there we go so it kind of look cool clear coated but she's just too rotten but it's clean I can see out of the glass no ideas if the wipers works or any of that stuff but we'll head back to where we got it come up with the game plan here car drives great I mean it's kind of weird with how everything is so rotten but it's so low miles that it just it drives really good so right now I got the rental truck at a motel you know the motel two and a half I took an Uber's taxi back to the rot bird here and now I'm taking this back to the motel and then in the morning I'm going to take the rental back to the rental place because it's closed right now get a taxi back to the motel check out and then hit the road it stays light here it's like 9 30 something like that but that's kind of the plan boy this carburetor we might have to rebuild it there's no accelerator pump you really gotta baby it but anyway the first couple hundred miles I want to do it in daylight because we might got some issues coming so that's kind of going to be the plan a couple things guy made of the motel the key actually locks the door that's pretty sweet also the young man living in that house I believe gave me this order and elimination lightning bolts I don't know apparently it's like a bug bomb but it's like a it's like a smell bomb it's a better a better smelling bomb potpourri grenade I don't know anyway we're gonna light this off tonight oh goodness gracious that doesn't mess around all right well maybe tomorrow it won't be so bad okay well we'll see you guys in the morning the route that I have planned is a little bit of Interstate quite a bit of back road then Interstate again comes up to around 700 miles to South Central Tennessee I don't know I have no idea the good thing is fresh wheel bearings we've got decent brakes you know nothing to write home about but we got new rotors and calipers reuse some brake pads we got the distribution blocky thingy fresh oil change we've got we didn't touch the ignition whatsoever or the fuel make it happener that is coming around though with the Berman could you not but the biggest problem we're going to have is multiple fuel stops I picked up a two gallon jog cousin emergency thing but see what happens see you guys in the morning well good morning bad news Fellers forgot to charge up my Bluetooth frame last night hopefully uh you know that hangs in there today oh are you kidding me I just waxed this thing oh oh great grand well let's see if the old girl fires up this morning and hopefully it smells better still smells like a compost pile full of diapers so that's good it's also really hot and moist in here terribly bad I got to fix this visor before we take off keeps falling down how's that gonna be good for now that's it a fuel station top off our gas tank gas jug in the front seat here I'm going to get about 37 5 Hour Energies and then we're going to see if this thing will drive 700 miles I mean we did like three yesterday I'm gonna go with three pumps off okay I like that [Music] everything's fine listen we got radial tuned suspension what more could you want all right filled up gonna try to find a fuel station about 50 miles we'll start there it should get way better than 10 miles to the gallon but playing it safe I am numb bfgs look good on the blue tires with the blue letters sits too high in the front though we could probably fix that hey upstairs let's go [Music] foreign [Music] but it took like an hour and a half hour and 40 minutes because well I scooted across town a lot of stop and go traffic stop signs stuff like that and then I threw it on the interstate at the end it's got long legs allegedly around like 80. I don't I don't recall another car that we ran on the fast lane that much maybe that T-top 5-speed Camara but that's going to be nice going home I just wanted to shake her down a little bit before we get carried away with this thing remember the frame is in bad shape speaking of shaking down It's a Spooky feeling glancing up in the rear view there and every time you hit a big crack on the highway or a bridge you just see chunks of rust exploding on the highway well I guess we're getting lighter as we're going so the MPGs are going to go up that's that's pretty good also good news I only used about half of that jug so let's calculate some MPGs here we might be able to stretch this thing out to 100 miles a stop or something like that that's really going to help getting back I mean 19 point something miles to get 20 miles per gallon wow that's pretty awesome so five gallons times 20 is like two bar stops I mean 100 miles so we can let's stop here let's stop 80 next time we'll just let's work our way up there got to get some groceries for the neck it's more of those things that what the backs neck as well let's keep rocking so far the bird's doing good I should pop the hood quick check the leaks and also I got to get some of my Gojo Wipes out and clean the steering wheel that thing is stickier than a toddler's face and I ain't kidding you you grab it and then you got to come back off so that's fix that yeah 40 Years of DNA just came off that bad boy still kind of sticky but more cleaner-ish had another bottle of Berryman let it chew on that vitals are good it never got over whatever that is 180 probably oil pressure has been consistently at 40 it's charging nothing terribly leaking or going wrong there radios working fine been chatting on the CBA radio a little bit you know we should try the AC I know it doesn't work right now but maybe we could put some juice in that and get the AC working anyway 74 miles next stop [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] radiator just popped oh boy well good news 19.7 miles to gallon allegedly at about 75.80 runs really good put that rotten radiator just popped on us I think because we shut it off it was getting up towards 200 degrees I bet it's over 220 now almost 220 but it built a lot of pressure I could see the fins where it popped in there okay well that's fine Let's uh let's ignored for now closest parts store is a Napa we're just gonna run her down there with no water quick try to sneak in and uh see what we can snag well Napa doesn't even show it as an available part called O'Reilly's they have it at the warehouse but they can't get it here till tomorrow so look at this cute little guy Casio we use this on the 35 Ford and I truly believe it got us home this one says it'll fix your ratchet and leak guaranteed in one to three minutes so real world testing right here right now I don't know if this is going to be the resolution we've got hundreds and hundreds of miles left but maybe if you catch it up good enough I could order one now pick it up on the way maybe I'm not sure for now just to see if we can slow the Sleek down okay oh you know what this looks exactly like they're head gasket oh and I bet you it is they just put it in a different bottle [Music] I should have just bought the head gasket one got more of it in there okay that's him says it needs to be operating temperature check we're going to top it off with this jug it's one extra I had fire this thing up let it run and monitor the leak here got her fired up it's really hard for you guys to see I know it's between the condenser and the rad you can see it's shooting straight out the concern here is even if this plugs this hole if that just randomly bursts I mean what it probably is going to do it another 93 times before we get home so that's nice but like I say temporarily permanent fix Maybe everything else is looking pretty good oh I forgot to you know what I should go get some new transmission clutches that was up because I was supposed to put a cord in and I forgot whoops uh I'll go do that while this is chewing and um everything else is looking good I've got a got a cord added I've never tried these type of transmission clutches before but I need everything it says on it so hopefully that'll work I can't believe I'm about to say this but I think this has actually worked I'm not seeing anything oh that drip don't worry about that one this one was the big one and I'm not seeing it and I've looked through here several times I think it's actually going to be okayish for now so I'm just gonna start dialing the parts store well it's not looking good Fellers I've called every parts store down my paths basically search along the Route computer parking box I said I'm called to call to call to call now all the O'Reilly's south of here can get it but they can't get it till Saturday which is a couple days from now and that's not gonna work if one here can get it tomorrow there must be a distribution center at DC close by but then I'd lose five six hours of driving today so that's not going to work either because I need to be home literally tomorrow afternoon dump my clothes on the floor repack it with fresh stuff and turn around and drive back to Wisconsin to do another Revival I'll be home for half hour and I can't be late for that other one so I grabbed a couple gallons of coolant and more so just so I have The Jug capacity we can get some water or something and a big can of the head gasket repair by KCl because I'm starting to be a believer in that stuff and we're just gonna push it see how far we can get if it totally pops so just have to deal with it then uh too far to turn around and we're fixing to go through Columbus I believe big city the worst place for that radiator to just explode but the clock's starting to work I mean the second hand turns every now and then so everything's fine really you know let's just hit the road [Music] okay well yeah she really blewed [Music] got over 220 took the closest exit I could take that wants to pop somewhere on the interstate now or outside of Columbus in some little tiny area oh boy I saw this as we took the exit came and talked to this old feather and he does not have any rats we'd dog and dog and dog I saw an Astro van back here but it's already been gutted man I mean I could we could hunker down we got that one rod if I called before five they could probably get it tomorrow but now we've still got to get back that way and I'm I don't think I'm gonna make it home in time I'm gonna see if I can find some scrap yards but basically exactly what I thought was going to happen happened fix one hole system pressurized again and then boom another hole it's just gonna keep happening I think use that other bottle and filled up some jugs with water over here thanks to those guys just trying to see I think it's the actual tank this time I think it's done done yeah I don't think that's gonna fix it looks like it's coming right off the inside of this tank right around the corner well I just hopped off the water found a part store that has they claim a variety of Radiators in stock so we're just gonna go there see if we can find anything that's even remotely close and do some cobbling don't like the way this traffic's looking guys got uh a couple more miles out and we're creeping up on 220 really quick if I get through this light might be able to Coast a little bit I need to unhook the neutral safety switch in this so I can bump the starter in neutral this particular store's computer does not let them search by the inlets or the outlet size or the shape or the dimension or anything so they don't have a bunch in stock well they do but they're like to Honda Suzuki it's in Mitsubishi missing galantos and anyway we'd be here forever so like a Rolodex I just started rattling off part numbers or not part numbers but vehicle makes and models that might have something similar and the 97th one that we typed in which is a G-Body another store has it like 15 minutes from here oh I don't know if we're gonna make it there I got a bunch more stuff this time we're trying stop leak I don't know there's a bunch of metal in here basically so we're gonna plug up our cooling system completely in the heads and everywhere else Will's trying to fix this Old Rad we could limp to this other store maybe I can Cobble that on here and make something happen but we'll see first I gotta dump this in pop it off get another gallon of antifreeze ah and I'm just stay green lights Stay Green we're just uh bombing through town here just got to get there before the tanks go dry look out oh the horn Works wow didn't make it when life hands you lemons trade them for whisk you know what I mean Brad's about 700 degrees it's gonna let it cool down I'll probably uh switch over to drinking water I'm at a loaf of bread and jugs or something gallons a drink of water are a lot cheaper and people don't look at you so weird when you're filling them in bathroom sinks as you do you know pulling drugs cool this thing down fill it up I got another eight miles we only got four miles so I'm probably gonna have to do that again we're not stopping again so we get four miles per rad fill even with the foot just through the firewall actually speaking of foot through stuff that's my foot right there oh I've snapped off more lines with my foot it looks like I don't know what those are too but apparently we don't need them we're overheating but I do like that two miles to the exit got her shut down sitting at a light we got to get through one more light after this and then it's on the right hand side well we got a Rad but it is not the right one the one that they were supposed to have a five seven three that showed in stock here was in fact not in stock so we played the make and model game again came up with this guy I don't know it should have the right side upper and right side lower and we're just gonna try to Cobble it in here as best I can and get down as many miles as we can tonight as long as this is going to work uh the hose sizes are probably different I probably better go get some clamps these are original clamps that's pretty cool but they're probably going to twist apart when I try to take them off oh my goodness the lower rad hose is held on with the zip tie a giant zip tie [Laughter] oh my gosh [Music] oh foreign [Music] it's one off of Monte Carlo it's a little wider so the cushion tabs don't fit quite correct but it should get us home fan shroud zip tied together because the hardware was bad and the transmission cooler lines are just double hose clamped on each end however I just noticed another big issue look at the water pump pulley I don't know how many more miles this has before that just grenades ah I gotta get some miles down I might try to limp it a little bit farther down the road we're losing light it's hard to tell it's so Smoky here this is all smoke prayers of those up in Canada if you've been affected by the wildfires that's a bad deal but I want to get some miles down we haven't really done much the risk is that comes off and tears up our new rad but I think we're going to risk it so I'm going to clean up my trash wipe up the stuff that I spilled try to make it look like it didn't even work here got to get some gas and we're just going to nurse this along a little bit farther well we're fueled up 79 miles I got on the map system here we're going to try to push it My Hope Is we can get there I could eat it's getting late be very late by then and then find a cheap motel there and then in the morning do a water pump when the engine's nice and cool at least that's a plan other opportunity unscheduled rapid disassembly and complete shrapnel of the front accessories and Radiator on the interstate all right here we go look how cool she's running now I misspoke it's actually 89 90 miles great news is all the traffic it's calmed down quite a bit rush hour is over so hopefully this is just nice easy driving through the bagels [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] well by some miracle we made it to the motel look how's the chief this part uh the state I guess 99 bucks I'd get to sleep in a real bed tonight Plus broke and sprinkle head free car wash that's not too shabby I found this one by the satellite Earth Google web images because we got this dead end kind of parking lot thing perfect for scattering allegedly coolant and oil and parts and debris and all that stuff tomorrow morning we got to get a couple parts a few things then we're going to tear into this thing and make it better that's going to do it for today we've got a huge long drive tomorrow but hopefully after this water pump and a couple other things wow these sprinkler's coming at me it's a real Rogue one hopefully after that the rot bird is sorted we're gonna make her back to Tennessee she's coming quick well good morning oh the rock Bird's still here just kind of hoping it'd be stolen but okay I guess not looking good I don't see any piles of well there's a little grip by the trans but that's it well it turns out 90 miles is the absolute maximum it's got for MPGs and the fuel mileages and all of that stuff that is empty so I'm going to root around in the boot I think I got some true fuel left I'm gonna dump that in this scoot over to a fuel station you got to go to the parts store I forgot I don't have a drain pan so the whole idea of working on this back here which people obviously do well ain't gonna happen well I'll just have to do it at the parts store I think let me dig around find something that's flammable get this thing fired up guy had about half a can left hopefully that gets us to the station the guy does believe I left my SGS upon the roof yesterday when we did the rad change that's too bad number I finally finally got a nice pair of sunglasses after 49 years and then I just I lose them that's why I stick to the 17 gas station glasses all right where's the keys here they are oh no never see them again I'm seeing them again let's go with two pumps that worked good yesterday boy this engine I didn't even look at the water pump I don't even want to see it the condition of that status that would be condition to condition but I don't want to look at it right now okay let's just get to where we're going smallest parking lot I've ever seen on O'Reilly's I don't want to plug it up so we're over here at the miyai Jay or meander mozier grocery store thank you for letting me use your facility without asking whoops I'll try to be clean all right let's get this pump out quick we got a lot of miles to go so basically just undoing a lot of what I did yesterday gonna have to drain this puppy bracket charging whirler look at this I can't believe that's not leaking it doesn't even make sense and then we could pop the belts off actually I'm gonna undo the fan first so I can use belt as a lever and then we'll get that pump off quick and throw the other one in apparently there is an ant colony somewhere in here and they're moving to larave I think it was in the this pile or something here in this fender but they are mad sorry I didn't send an eviction notice I didn't know he was there got her all stripped down kind of fun actually it's all original I mean this one had an original clamp on it too unfortunately I had to break off original water pump I mean none of this stuff's been messed with since you don't see that a lot anymore at all the upper no the upper ad hose hadn't been changed either so pretty time capsule-ish I did have to cut the AC belt off we'll save on that compressor anyway it's not blowing cold but we could have maybe have tested it but I like cruising with Windows Down anyway we got a new pump out here I got gaskets cooking on it because I got to slide it behind the PS pump a couple minutes here I'll slap this back in reversalize on the insulationals and hopefully we'll be good to go new water pump doesn't have these studs so don't panic Sellers and don't squish these with the vice grip although that is effective what I do is double net them and then we can pull these studs out so just run two nuts on tighten them together and then essentially try to loosen the bottom or not and it'll back this stud right out and we could put that on the new pump whoa we finally got a good rad flush in you know what I mean the long way okay everything's buttoned up back together it was cheaper buying this fun nail with a screen in there I'm just going to dump that right back in and then we'll top her off with The Jug I kept from yesterday all the other ones I threw away didn't think I need them again oh and we should finally be on the road well if this was a gold pan we'd be we'd be striking or Rich oof to me [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] ly that little drip has turned into this and that is not good I know exactly what that is that is a bad rear main seal and that could escalate very very quickly confirmations on rear sealage package she's going out probably just old crusty it's not good for cars to sit that's what happens uh check the oil was two quarts down filled that it's not burning it it's just starting to dump it out I still got a long ways to go and this can escalate it could be fine or this thing could just go and geyser so I'm gonna type in my pocket computer digital box uh hardware store I'm gonna go in and get some snake oil I like the blue devil rear main seal fix it's worked for me in the past it swells them up big time like three times the original size should slow this thing down enough to where we can get back I don't want to hurt this engine it's a really really good running engine so if you don't want to lose oil pressure is what I'm saying uh but we're cooking uh just running better the more we drive it car brush trunk still falling off it's not overheating at all it barely comes off the 100 degree mark on the on the gauge so everything else is fine we just got to get this oil loss under control now [Music] foreign [Music] oil really bad if you just scan your peepers on it that was only after a couple miles I want to explain the difference between burning oil and a rear main seal leak now burning oil I doesn't concern me one I don't care if it's two so I don't have four quarts per fill up I'll drive that thing from coast to coast it's a known value you know what you're going to burn you know what you're going to use you just keep dumping it in and there's virtually nothing that's going to change that scenario to make it worse so if you burn three quarts of oil per fill up I would just send that thing and drive her all the way to New York wouldn't bother me the least bit at all however a rear main seal that thing can completely blow out and we could lose all courts and have none chords left in a matter of a minute and it's just a much more terrible situation to be in because it's not tangible it's not a known valuable it's variable so you never know how much you're leaking if it's improving or getting worse unless you continually stop as opposed to burning oil I got some snake oil here gonna throw that in pick up a couple more quarts just to jam in this thing this is this might actually shut us down fingers crossed it doesn't but we're gonna probably go back down to about 40 miles and then pull over might as well fill the jug and then we'll check the leak and see if it's getting worse hopefully it just sustains or slightly improves and we can get this thing back thank you [Music] foreign [Music] look at that couple drips I better check the wallet just to make sure but I think that Blue Devil snake oil already did something to little devil filling up here I think two more times we'll make her back home the old Hee-Haw the fireworks going still [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] well against quite a few mini odds the rot bird has made it we've pulled up to the yard here 700 miles in this old car that just been sitting off the road for years luckily you know the axle didn't just rip out of the car some of the other issues we were facing with well basically zero stability left in this rig what's it was like driving a wet noodle basically give her input and maybe it would do that maybe not Motors under the car they're inspecting it I think he heard Rustin went right underneath it's kind of saddening it's such a beautiful car inside it's low miles it the engine runs great but it's so rotten I'm not quite sure what to do with the thing I hate to part it out but we might be headed that road I'm not quite sure you guys bleep bloop it down there in the comments what we should do with this here Firebird I'm going to back it up to the barn here clean it out I'm going to leave this one on the concrete for now just wait to hear what you guys have to think thanks guys for watching appreciate it very much we'll see you very soon where'd you go toothless toothless that thing can't keep up to it [Music] foreign [Music]
