SURPRISING a 94 Year Old Veteran with a Mercedes 190SL Full Detail and Transformation!

[Music] thank you [Music] I got you straight [Music] God look at the paint yeah it's I didn't realize it was red [Music] [Music] the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a two-seat Roadster produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1955 to 1963. the 190 SL was an affordable alternative to the coveted 300 SL this had a 1.9 liter straight four-cylinder single overhead cam producing 104 horsepower 4-speed manual double wishbones drum brakes and weighed roughly about 2600 pounds dry today these are incredibly desirable so to find one sitting under a house is pretty rare I arrived on a very discreet road to meet up with my buddy Pete now he is an avid car and motorcycle collector with some very rare and unique rides Hello Larry nice to meet you sir who's that oh Robert that's Robert over there and that one that's the pain in the ass grandson hi Andrew hold on to the real there come on what do you think I am I'm not blind not really look at this you're not kidding you're really yeah they saw the mice poop everywhere it's just the way I like it he loves to clean up stuff like this Dad really yeah he says he's gonna clean it up beautiful what do you got there just got just trying to have a little play date with you I'll tell you in a minute all right hold on anyway I went to I didn't speak English so I came over you know sign that was about 10 years old I had a friend of mine his name was Walt his father got him a brand new car just like this years later I've been I'm in the insurance business there's a car comes in with with this car on it a car carrier yeah and I said to my son I said for God's sakes Peter now they're coming in with with the car carriers all right but I was like I rode the one day I wrote 41 new contracts since there's 11. in those days everything had to be done by hand anyway that's how I ended up getting that my son bought it for me he paid 2 700 bucks for him I can see that it's red this is the start huh that's good it's going to look a lot cleaner when we're done with this to get the car out Pete's son Andrew and I removed moved the 2x6 door locks yeah so without the tires with air while Pete drove the truck around the house to pull her out we're filling it up Overkill man you always want to do an Overkill we're gonna get in it'll go down I think the brakes are frozen stuck [Music] the car finally out Under the Sun one wheel of course was still locked and ripping up the grass as we were pulling it towards the road but eventually we got it on the road where Pete decided it would be best to just unstick the one wheel by taking her for her first ride in many years whether you agree or disagree it actually works so after a few feet one of the wheels freed up and now we were good to go there is did it pop I felt it inside the car keep going meet me yeah yeah let's go for a ride I know I'm nervous now after my sleigh arrived ah that was a fun bump we got the SL loaded up into the trailer which was a feat all by itself we headed back to the studio and put the car underneath the lights you can really see the level of dust dirt and years of stratified Mouse poop on the rear quarter with a car this dirty step one's pretty simple we're gonna power wash the paint to remove the duster and food just to make life a little easier [Music] foreign [Music] next I added ammo foam and boost to the foam Cannon and then soak the paint before washing with a blue microfiber towel and a brush [Music] through this and it was backwards walking backwards [Music] foreign [Music] I propped open the hood with a camera stand and then rinsed out all the mouse droppings that were everywhere they're super hard to see against the black firewall then I scrub with a dual density scrub brush and a small wheel brush to loosen the grease and grime thank you I'm not even sure if this is called detailing this is just like cleaning poop okay at this point in the process pretty much all the dangerous biohazards are blown off the car I'm relatively safe so I put her up on the lift to remove the wheels and then clean the undercarriage check out the beauty rings from 1956. how awesome is that and the irony is we're still trying to beautify Wheels even still today with chrome and copper fiber two-piece three-piece Spinners I can't remember Spinners how crazy it was that massive Wheels super wide rims lips and so on I think it's really fun to look back and see while some things change they also sort of stay the same we just love beautifying our Wheels no matter what year it is foreign with the car up on the lift the underneath had lots of spider webs and years of mud so enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] with my floor now A bit worse for wear I lowered the car down and started working on the wheels hubcaps and beauty rings foreign [Music] foreign process I first cleaned the door with lather and a scrub brush then hit it with steam and then wipe it clean on the seats I used the larger interior dual density scrubber now this is the same design as the smaller interior brush but it's just much larger meaning it covers more real estate it has a ring of softer hair around the edge and shorter stiffer bristles in the middle so you can adjust your cleaning strength by adjusting your downward pressure it's like having two brushes in one very handy when you need it for a link to the steamer brushes preservation episode I repeated the same steps on the rest of the Interior until I hit the ashtray with compressed air without checking it first and guess what cigarette Ash still smells awful 20 years later big shocker [Music] rear carpets out to vacuum and found the Lost keys under the passenger side [Music] in the trunk I removed the rubber mat that clearly trapped water or moisture behind it at some point in its life because of the surface rust so I decided to clean the trunk with frothy anti-salt just to scoop up whatever the white stuff was on the trunk lid and surrounding areas then I sanded the surface rust with my Milwaukee hand drill and a wire wheel [Music] with most of the heavy rust up now I vacuumed up the dust and primed the surface with my rust inhibitor [Music] once dried I laid a few coats of black to clean it up but really the goal here is just to stop the rust from spreading anymore until Pete and Mr B decide the next steps next I started the paint polishing process by separating my test panel into three areas I use the blue wool polishing pad and blue Compound on the top part and afterwards it looked much better but there's still tick marks are damaged in the paint that hasn't been removed even with a strong compound next for the middle area I used a yellow wool pad and polish again same thing the surface scratches are gone but there's still these tick marks are Halo marks around the paint on the lower third I used a yellow pad and my latest concoction that allows for longer polishing time without losing any cut which is critical again the depth is back it looks great but the tick marks are still there so if I put my paint dub gauge on here right off the bat I'm getting some crazy numbers and the crazy numbers range from everything from five six seven I have 11 over here and all the way in the back we have something like 40. when you have something like 40 that's going to indicate that there's body filler on there which makes sense because this car clearly has been repainted because of the variations the huge variations in paint depth and what happens is if you look in the back you'll see these cracks everywhere what's happening is body filler are sometimes referred to as Bondo is formed on there to sort of cover up any damage that may or may not have occurred and then when paint goes on top of that underneath the body is heating up and expanding and Contracting expanding Contracting over time and as it's doing that with the paint on top of it it's becoming very brittle as it gets as as the age happens I'm sure this happened a decade ago if not more and as it becomes brittle the paint goes with it so that's where you see all these cracks happening so what I did was I split the paint up into three things as you can see here three sections first one up here I used comp pound and I used a microfiber pad here I used Polished in a wool pad and here I use foam and a foam pad polish and the moral of the story here is when I did all of this they all look pretty much the same which is very odd the reason they look the same is underneath is where all the damage is so I'm not really taking anything out on top which is kind of counterintuitive when we're working on paint so I'm probably just going to go with a foam pad in some areas maybe a few things here and there but the moral of the story on this one is this isn't just like close your eyes and just you know do step one do step two that is not the case here because I could actually blow a lot of this paint off the mission for me is just to kind of put some lipstick on this thing make it look as good as possible and hopefully Inspire the owner to say hey this needs a new a repaint or hey I'm going to replace the engine or sell it or do something with it and just pull it out into the daylight so pretty stoked about this one here and I think when I'm done it's gonna look pretty good with my game plan now set I pulled the tape from my test and check out the before and after clearly it's much better but sometimes you just have to be okay with what's the best the paint can give you if you fight this and push those limits you're actually going to burn through the paint and defeat the purpose of the preservation so the bottom line is this if all three polishing techniques produced more or less the same results I'm gonna use the least aggressive method to minimize my risk of pushing the paint too far [Music] thank you [Music] check out the 50 50 on the driver's side door to me this is very exciting to see results of safe and healthy polishing on paint that's really on its last leg of life with the paint now looking much better I focused on the bumpers to do that I used an lhr 75 which is a 3-inch thematic and a microfiber cutting pad to clean and just sort of brighten up the Chrome for the record this by default will make it look better but it's pretty far gone so my expectations were very reasonable when a polishing Chrome dispatch [Music] when I was done with the entire process it looked much better but Beware of the price you will pay to clean up Chrome it is lots of hours especially in the tight areas so get some music playing and just zone out and enjoy bright and early the next day I started on the convertible top and I know you're wondering why I didn't clean it earlier it's because we initially thought it was going to be replaced then we changed our mind we went back and forth Etc so at this point I just decided hey let's just give it a go with a vacuum to remove the years of dust and poop and hopefully it won't disintegrate in the process foreign [Music] with the material holding up to a light vacuum I filled the air diffuser with shag and water connected it to the air hose and then gave it a go gently hoping this sort of just blows some life back into the material without destroying it because it was a little on the brittle side which was making me nervous afterwards I gently dried it off and it looked pretty good but more importantly nothing ripped any worse than it was or frayed in the process so I put it back down for the upcoming reveal finally because of all the fecal matter in and outside the car I soaked the interior in restore disinfectant to kill the bacteria I let it soak for two minutes and then removed it once everything was dry inside I coated the wildly parched leather with mousse and it drank it right up now keep in mind with leather this dry you're gonna need to do more than one coat for sure give it about 20 minutes in between the coats to see how much is absorbed or if you find blotchy areas or dry spots that kind of thing finally I added blush wax to the paint for some extra pop and quite honestly it just felt right versus putting a coating on if there's something about waxing a red SL that's poetic then so be it then I scrub padded the windows which were ridiculously grimy and the difference was huge quite honestly the biggest difference in the entire car was doing the windows as weird as that sounds then I reinstalled the wheels polished up the beauty rings and hubcaps by hand and polish foreign to the rubber which obviously needed to be replaced but I just I couldn't help myself I just wanted to see how it looked back down on the ground in its former glory before Pete arrives and man the before and after was stunning tell me you can't picture this thing being like parked by the Riviera with the White Walls sticking out hair slicked back in the 1960s the ultimate top-down Cruiser oh foreign [Music] what's going on good to see you yeah you too come on in check her out oh my God crazy right yeah that's awesome unbelievable oh my God look at the paint yeah it's I didn't realize it was red it's red underneath oh my God that's awesome but I you know she was looking pretty rough down Survivor you know and then we pulled this up this had a ton of mouse poo everywhere oh really cleaned everything but it's very delicate it's gonna live somewhere man that's right that's right wow Cody is gonna be psyched all right he's gonna be psyched we're gonna get it running again um you know we're gonna bring it back to the shop now and get it get it running and uh go pick up that and give him a little rip in it he's gonna be excited to be in it yeah I think the last time he drove was probably 20 I say 28 to 30 years ago was the last time it rolled you remember when we pulled it out of the basement yeah it was like a nightmare trying to get it out with the truck but I think it's be fun to get her running back under its own power again I don't think it's gonna be too hard either it's uh you know we know the motor's free yeah and uh certainly the wheels are unlocked yes definitely now yeah but in worst case scenario we don't get it running we'll come back put a chain on it we'll drive you down the road with Tony you guys can smoke a pipe yummy thank you so much hey man what's going on what's going on I'm just trying to put this thing back together we've had some some issues man we've been chasing every single possible problem with spark we replace the wires today we just did a brand new coil we did a new igniter box there's the coil we tried three different coils because of course for a 52 56 Mercedes it's tough to find stuff we put a new condenser in oh you know what Jay look at that did you clean it we just did this on look at this if you if you take it they're totally corroded yeah you take a little file you get in there and you get this all right I just did this maybe an hour ago on the 39 I mean get some Emery paper get some memory that's exactly pull this guy right here yeah and just open them up and put them between in between yeah check that though yeah but you know who knows now we're not getting any spark now we we were before yeah and you could see the corroded check it out you can see the corrosion you see it they're green see it it's green in there yeah small just a little bit just to go back and forth up and down it's fun you take that and go I like this eye there if this starts you're no longer just a detailer you are a master okay you ready oh there's a spark what there's absolutely no way no way all right put that plug back in no no hang on hang on one second hang on a second we have four we have more don't put it all in all right holy cow man you are the man look at that thing oh that's so cool dude wow it sounds great too listen to it he's running perfect oh my God it's all about the point oh it's all about the points man you gotta get the points this right here that's the key oh man that's so cool I wish Tony was here man we take him for a run as soon as it's nice out we'll take him for a ride yeah wow listen to it man that's the first time it's running so happy that's first time it's running in 30 years or 25 years how's it look a little smoky let's push it back a little bit perfect push it back a little bit perfect look at that wow listen to it idle she sounds great doesn't it yeah it sounds pretty good oh that's awesome man Tony is gonna when he sees this he really is I can't wait to take him for a ride in it man all right you're good come on where are we going to check out your car a what what's the price I got a little something I know you can't see too well but oh my God I know I know you're I know your hands still work and you can feel good right yeah come over here put your hand over here what is it holistic oh my God oh my God this is beautiful my God yes yes I see it it's it's my Mercedes oh my Lord oh my God this is beautiful I've never tried to see it oh my look this is gorgeous oh God we got it running yesterday really yes yeah we're gonna fire it up now take it for a little spin you ready oh yeah oh my God I can't believe it oh all right let's see if we get there open up that door there Andrew let's see if we can let's see if we can get her fired Up Get It fired up I'll get it fired up we'll put it in reverse and see if it actually moves I think we might get it to move dad my favorite son that's right favorite song make sure my other siblings hear that on the face of that Holy Smokes okay we gotta hit it with a little fuel in there again a little fuel can not too much just enough to get her in there that's good that's good all right I can't believe it it'll go forward won't go backwards push push push
