raised jesus from the dead be with you all and with your spirit my dear sisters and brothers in the waters of baptism pat died with christ and rose with him to new life may he share now with christ in eternal glory deacon john now blesses pat's earthly remains with water from our baptismal font as a reminder to us of his new life in christ through baptism where he is united with christ in his death and in his resurrection we believe that all the ties of friendship and affection which knit us as one throughout our lives do not unravel with death confident that god always remembers the good we have done and forgives our sins let us pray asking god to gather pat to himself almighty god and father it is our sure faith that your son who died on the cross was raised from the dead the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep grant that through this mystery your servant pat who has gone to his rest in christ may share in the joy of his resurrection we ask this through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit god forever and ever amen let us be seated now as we listen to our readings from sacred scripture a reading from the book of revelation i john saw a new heaven and a new earth the former heaven and the former earth had passed away and the sea was no more i also saw the holy city a new jerusalem coming down out of heaven from god prepared as a bride adorned for her husband i heard a loud voice from the throne saying behold god's dwelling is with the human race he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will always be with them as their god he will wipe every tear from their eyes and there shall be no more death or mourning wailing or pain for the old order has passed away the one on the throne said behold i make all things new i am the alpha and the omega the beginning and the end to the thirsty i will give a gift from the spring of life-giving water the victor shall inherit these gifts and i shall be his son his god and he will be my son the word of the lord the lord is kind and merciful merciful is the lord the lord is kind and merciful merciful is the lord bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name bless the lord o my soul forgot not always the lord is kind and merciful merciful is the lord he pardons all your iniquities he heals all your ears he redeems your life from destruction [Music] and grounds you with kindness and compassion [Music] the lord is kind and merciful mercifully [Music] the lord the lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed he has made known his ways to moses and his deeds to the children of israel [Music] the lord is kind and merciful merciful is the lord merciful and gracious is the lord slow to anger and abounding in kindness for as the heavens are high above the earth so surpassing is his kindness towards those who fear him the lord is kind and merciful [Music] merciful is the lord [Music] a reading from first john beloved see what love the father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of god yet so we are the reason the world does not know us is that they that it did not know him beloved we are god's children now what we shall be has not yet been revealed we do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is the word of the lord praise and honor honor and glory glory to you lord jesus christ praise and honor honor and glory glory to you lord jesus christ our lord and savior jesus christ destroyed death and brought light to life through the gospel praise and glory honor [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you lord jesus said this to his disciples at the last supper as the father loves me so i also love you remain in my love if you keep my commandments you will remain in my love just as i have kept my father's commandments and remain in his love i have told you this so that you made joy may be that your joy may be in you and your joy may be complete this is my commandment love one another as i love you no one has greater love than this to lay down one's life for one's friends you are my friends if you do what i command you this i command you love one another the gospel of the lord jesus christ would you please be seated streeter aisha taylor your spouses your families our prayers concern and consolation are with you all as we gather we are most grateful to be able to be with you and to pray with you on behalf of your husband father grandpa and good friend it is a joy to be able to welcome you all here this this afternoon at a catholic funeral we do not solely focus on the person who has died their life or accomplishments rather we most especially focus on god and what god has done in the person's life i suspect that you will agree with me that god has done some incredible things in and through pat he was an incredible and exceptional individual he possessed many gifts and shared them freely enthusiastically and joyfully he touched many people's lives which is evidenced by your presence here today over the past weeks as i've thought about what i would share and offer in this homily a past funeral i struggled to put thoughts together it was only this morning as i prayed with the readings once again that a single word was given to me faithfulness genie in the family shared with me that pat was a man of faith he was a man who lived his catholic faith in word and most especially indeed he was faithful to janie to his family to his patients to his colleagues and to his friends he really was faithful that is full of faith one of the first stories shared by the family when we met was told by marissa's husband raymond he mentioned how faith was important in past life he remembered being at lake fair with pat they had gotten a burger and he was take about to take a bite into the burger when pat stopped him and said you have to say grace first well he thought pat was kidding and was about to bite into the burger and pat with a smile kind of grabbed his hand and said no really you got to pray before you eat being grateful was an integral part of pat's faithfulness acknowledging that all is gift from god that was a man in whom you discovered faith and in whom you could put your faith because pat was rooted in his faith it naturally flowed from him to others many of you like me placed yourselves in pat's hands trusting in his skill his training and his belief that as the poster on his wall said the power that created the body heals the body hat connected people to god through his ministry and profession as a chiropractor and he did it well i never experienced pat pushy with his faith it was simply the foundation of how he lived and who he was like jesus he knew that he was loved by the heavenly father and in his own unique way he knew these words of jesus from our gospel this morning as the father has loved me so i love you remain in my love could you not feel his love in his care when you were in his presence whether it was a casual conversation or when you were explaining what was causing the pain and how it hurt and where or when he was manipulating your body on the table hat was ministering to you caring for you loving you into health and into greater wholeness in our first reading from the book of revelation the final book of the bible the apostle john has this incredible vision of the end time when all will be brought to fulfillment according to god's plan he writes i saw a new heaven and a new earth behold god's dwelling is with the human race god will dwell with them and they will be god's people and god himself will always be with them as their god god will wipe away every tear from their eyes and there shall be no more death or warning no pain or grieving for the old order has passed away behold i make all things new this is god's plan for us and for all of creation that through the life death and resurrection of jesus christ that we might have eternal life as john says earlier in chapter 3 for god so loved the world that he gave his only son that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life jesus is the love of the father incarnate made flesh one of us in all things but sin for jesus love is not a feeling or some passing word or action rather it is his very being and through jesus love is made manifest as willing the good for the other jesus loving us is meant to bring us into our deepest truest selves as created by god who loves us into being and who sustains us through love at every moment of our existence pat's trust and faith in the love of god was i believe at the deepest core of his being maybe he would not articulate in those words yet it seemed to permeate who he was as saint john reminded us in our second reading see what love the father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of god yet so we are streeter marissa meshiah excuse me taylor the love your dad had for you as a father deep and profound that it is is only a foretaste of the love that god has for you and longs for you to experience is my prayer that the gift of your father's faith will be your rich and lasting inheritance i end with a favorite memory of mine i had the privilege of being under pat's care for over 20 plus years my memory is the child childlike delight and joy that pat would have when he'd come out of the exam room and announce that i was subluxation free and ring the bell with abandon well past earthly journey has come to an end pat believed that his life was not all that there was he believed that he was created to be with god for all eternity as jesus tells his disciples in chapter 14 at the last supper in my father's house there are many dwelling places let us pray now that this promise is fulfilled because of pat's faith in the death and resurrection of jesus christ there may be no clanging of the bell yet i suspect there is great rejoicing among the saints in heaven pat well done well done good and faithful servant we pray that you enter into your masters eternal joy thank you for showing us the way of faithfulness let us stand and pray we bring our prayers to the lord and our response after each prayer is hear our prayer in baptism patrick received the light of christ scatter the darkness now and give us [Music] please stand and pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice of my hands for the praise and glory of this name and good and good of all this holy church amen as we humbly present to you these sacrificial offerings o lord for the salvation of your servant pat we beseech your mercy that he who did not doubt your son to be a loving savior may find in him a merciful judge who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ your son our lord in him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come indeed for your faithful lord life is changed not ended and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven and so with angels and archangels thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] lord god [Music] oh [Music] i invite you for the eucharistic prayer to kindly kneel or be seated you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of your beloved son our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] resurrection until therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son's death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and paul our bishop er savior's assistant bishop and all the clergy remember also your servant pat whom you have called from this world to yourself grant that he who has united with your son in a death like his may also be one with him in his resurrection and remember
