forever and ever amen invite our young people forward for the children's liturgy of the word grateful for our couple of our young people for helping with the children's liturgy of the word come on forward i heard a lot of your friends have gone to warmer places it's spring break in many of the districts all right young people so we're going to hear you're going to hear about jesus going into the desert our theme for atlanta is being led by the spirit and even you you you you even you should be led by the spirit listening to the holy spirit in practice saying come holy spirit okay moms can come too yeah okay all right so we send you forward to go out into your desert huh into the chapel and listen for the spirit [Music] so [Music] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering armenian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry he saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wanders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] me with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray you who dwell in the shelter of the lord moses [Music] see to the lord my refuge and fortress the god in whom i trust me with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray no evil shall be for you no pain come near fully angels [Music] you [Music] always your life [Music] when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray those who cling to the lord live secure in god's love [Music] god will bring [Music] be me lord i pray a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord grace to you lord jesus christ glory one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god the lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed for from him for a time the gospel of the lord led by the spirit is our parish theme for lent this year led by the spirit we find these words in today's gospel after being baptized by john in the jordan river jesus was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil hearing that line we may pull back and say whoa maybe i don't want to be led by the spirit if the spirit is going to lead me into the desert and allow me to be tempted by the devil that is a very understandable but incorrect response from us if it was good for the lord to be led by the spirit into the desert then it is doubly good for us to go as jesus allowed himself to be led by the spirit to prepare himself for his public ministry so we must allow the lord to send us to this to the desert to be led by the spirit to prepare for our public ministry our daily witness of the gospel that hard work of conforming ourself to christ and for announcing and making present the kingdom of god at home at work at school and in the public square lent is this beautiful annual reminder to allow ourselves to be led by the spirit into the desert whether that desert be our room our cabin a walk in the woods disney world or here in the church in front of the blessed sacrament the desert in the spiritual life is not so much a place as it is an attitude a willingness to separate ourselves from our daily activities and to be alone with god we can be led by the spirit to the desert without ever leaving white bear lake without leaving our house and there spend time with our loving god every so often i hear someone say and it's usually guys i'm fine everything is great i don't need to be led by the spirit into the desert or anywhere else if you think that you definitely need to go to the deserts you are not being led by the spirit or looking seriously at your life in relation to the gospel all of us have work to do all of us are in need of conversion all of us have room to grow in our relationship with god and our neighbor more often i hear people including myself offering excuses for not allowing ourselves to be led by the spirit here are some very common excuses and my response i am weak in the face of temptation welcome to the club all of us are weak and we regularly fail to follow god's commandments but take courage saint paul reminds us that in our weakness we can become strong if we rely not on our own strength but on the power of god and yes if we fall and we all fall then we turn to the lord with a contrite heart and the lord promises to raise us up and get us back into the fights a second excuse i'm afraid of what i'll discover about myself we should be grateful not afraid to discover those parts of our life that lead us away from god and neighbor we are wired to be with god our greatest happiness comes from being united with god we should want to have the spirit revealed to us that which separates us from god as painful and as humbling as that can be so that we can with god's grace live in right relationship with god and neighbor i'm afraid of what god will ask of me god asks for repentance god asks for conversion god asks us to be the person he created us to be to live in a way that leads to our greatest happiness yes admitting our sins and amending our life can be humbling changing course and making better decisions that can be tough but god will never ask us to do something we cannot do god will give us the gifts and the grace we need to succeed in what god asks of us i'm not worthy for this private time with god is another excuse you're correct you are not worthy none of us is worthy god is god and we're not god is the creator and we're the creature god is perfect and we are not and yet in his love and mercy god has chosen each of us as his beloved son and beloved daughter god has created us in his image and likeness and wired us for heaven for the good for the true the beautiful god delights in his time with us hearing from us speaking to us encouraging us forgiving us correcting us god wants us to delight in our time with him i'm too young we're never too young to be led by the spirit as i said to our young people going out especially at the start of your life young people i encourage you to develop the habit of asking the spirit to guide you and then to grow in your ability to recognize the spirit's voice from all those other voices out there i'm too old nice try we are never too old to be led by the spirit especially as we prepare to meet the lord face to face we should be even more eager and more humble to encourage the spirit to lead us i'm too busy if you're too busy to spend with god time with god then you're too busy our relationship with jesus christ should be our most important relationship our salvation our most important goal if we're too busy to give attention to christ and our salvation if we're too busy to pray with our children and bring them to mass and teach them the faith that our life is disordered thus lent and the desert and the invitation to be led by the spirit to get back on track with our priorities in good order i hear this too frequently i'm not chosen false god has intentionally thought you into being and in the waters of baptism he marked you as his beloved god desires you and the rest of us to live with him forever the salvation of every person was the reason jesus came that he suffered and died and rose from the dead i assure you with great confidence you are known you are loved and you are chosen and the spirit has been sent to you personally to lead you to say yes to god's invitation trusting that this path leads to your greatest happiness and finally i'm not prepared i'm i'm just not prepared to be led by this spirit there really isn't a lot of preparation necessary have a humble and contrite hearts a desire to listen a willingness to change and god will do the rest these are some of the common excuses for not being led by the spirit you may have your own none of them are valid lent is a privileged time to reject our excuses and allow ourselves to be led by the spirit into the desert into those places where god wants to meet us but lent is not the only time we should ask the spirit to lead us every day in every a circumstance driving us to pray and to listen to be open to god's word god's ways and god's grace rather than relying on our own feeble plans and efforts and through these repeated trips to the desert god allows us to see ourselves more clearly and then conforms us more closely to his son so where is the spirit leading you personally this lent i want you to ask yourself that question certainly the daily prayer he wants to hear from us math every week maybe sneak in during the week confession some people joke and i kind of give in to this i was thinking about this last night father it's been 30 years since i've gone to confession you don't have time if you make the effort i'll make the time come to confession maybe god is sending you to that desert of a broken relationship that needs to be healed maybe to a service opportunity maybe into a small group maybe god is calling you to the desert of counseling because things are not going well in your life maybe god is calling you to the desert of facing an addiction maybe god you're a senior or a junior and god is you wants you to use this lent to consider where god are you calling me certainly god calls each of us to read the bible especially the gospels maybe god this is the lent that god really is hammering at you we need to pray as a family every day maybe it's alms giving to the food shelf to the catholic services appeal maybe you're one of the catholics like so many these days i was baptized i would receive my first communion then mom and dad said well you're on your own you've never been been confirmed this is a beautiful time to search out the sacraments to finish that sacrament to get the fullness of the holy spirit in confirmation maybe as god is asking me maybe this is the lent the desert is your closets and drawers i haven't worn that for 15 years let's clear out the closets bring them to goodwill or or some other charity and then not fill up those closets again this lent no excuses led by the spirit let us go to the desert in our weakness allowing god's word to form us and then cooperate with god's grace in becoming a better version of the person god created us to be go to the desert and do not be afraid together now we make our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from lights true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate to the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living of the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come led and inspired by the spirit we turn to god the father with these prayers that led by the spirit to embrace prayer fasting and alms giving the church may learn anew that we do not live by bread alone we pray to the lord for leaders of nations that they may seek diplomatic solutions to conflict and war we pray to the lord for our allies and our enemies that god may guide them to the way of peace we pray to the lord that those estranged by sin may experience the joy of reconciliation we pray to the lord that those preparing for the initiation sacraments be led by the spirit to new life we pray to the lord that led by the spirit in the lenten wilderness all the baptized may experience victory over temptation we pray to the lord for the homebound hospitalized and sick may they be strengthened by god's grace we pray to the lord for those who have died especially philip arkhand father of david arkhand and frank paslar may they dwell forever in the shelter of the most high we pray to the lord for all of our personal intentions and especially for rob wincheske we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we pray for the people of ukraine for peace we pray for safe passage for those seeking to leave ukraine we pray for those refugees who have left and for those countries that are welcoming them we pray to the lord almighty god we thank you for this privileged time of lent where you invite us to be led by the spirit into the desert to be formed by your word help us be open to that word to be coming more closely the person you have created us to be we make this prayer through christ our lord [Music] this is my prayer in the desert when all that's within me feels dry this is my prayer in my hunger and need my god is the god who provides [Music] and this is my prayer in the fire in weakness or trial or pain there is a faith proved of more worth than gold so refine me lord through the flames and i will bring praise i will bring praise no weapon formed against me shall we remain i will rejoice i will declare god is my victory and he is here [Music] this is my prayer in the harvest when favor our providence flow i know i'm failed to be emptied again the seed i've received i will sow [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food jesus consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy lord god heaven and earth blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out on them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your beloved son jesus christ in whom we too are your sons and daughters indeed though we once were lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son who alone is just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to them saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his blood to be shed on the cross he took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving you thanks handed the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save our savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our surest peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful and merciful god this sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father on those you unite to yourself by the sacrifice of your son and grant that by the power of the holy spirit as they partake of this one bread and one chalice they may be gathered into one body in christ who heals every division be pleased to keep us always in communion of mind and heart together with francis our pope and bernard our bishop help us to work together for the coming of your kingdom until the hour when we stand before you saints among the saints in the halls of heaven with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles and all the saints and with our deceased brothers and sisters whom we humbly commend to your mercy then freed at last from the wound of corruption and made fully into a new creation we shall sing to you with gladness the thanksgiving of christ who lives for all eternity through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours and forever [Music] oh [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always acknowledge one another with some signer word of peace [Music] have mercy on [Music] you into my soul since i cannot now receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my hearts i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be can either send it right to catholic service appeal or you can drop it in the collection basket on sundays tomorrow is the last day for the dream survey if you've not been around or you're new to the parish we're out of debt now and we're thinking okay where do we move from here uh what what does god want us to do so it's kind of a lent it's kind of a desert time for us as well as we listen to the spirit so if you haven't filled out a survey or if you got some new ideas there's some surveys in the back at the welcome desk to our young people i know a lot of people have been it's it's the end of the winter and some things are happening over at white bear i know some people were in choirs and ensemble they had a big concert and uh evaluation and many good people are many good uh marks from the judges for some of our people so great young people now come and sing up here right you did so beautifully in front of all these judges and your parents come up here apparently friday night there was a hockey game hill murray and white bear again i think it's a 19th year out of the last 40 that these two have met and we have players on both teams here you're the referee just separate them mr bonnin had a goal hill murray won five uh to nothing so we wish you well in uh in uh this week in the tournament matami day mata midai also won this week their boys are going to hockey what's viz done whatever you're doing uh god has given you talents let's celebrate them in the community and finally today at the cathedral and at the basilica uh is the rite of election so those people who have never been baptized we call them catechumens they've never been these are adults who have never been baptized go to the archbishop to be received into the church to prepare them for the easter sacraments we have three three that's beautiful we have three catechumens adults who have never been baptized who feel led by the spirit now to come be part of the church to be associated with christ at his church that's beautiful it will have the cathedral will be pretty full so will the basilica we also have four candidates candidates are people who have been baptized in non-catholic christian churches but feel led by the spirit to come into full communion with the church and so we have three catechumens four candidates that's god's fruit here in the parish so congratulations really to the parish there's something here the spirit is moving and so uh invite invite propose don't don't nag invite people to be led by the spirits okay so pray for our candidates and our catechumens as they go to the cathedral to meet the bishop and for our young people going places how's that book feeling good all right his first time being booked he's doing great uh it's it is spring break so pray for all of our young people it'd be a restful time for our teachers and and school people for a time of relaxation as well the lord be with you bow down for the blessing may bountiful blessing o lord we pray come down upon your people that hope may grow in tribulation virtue be strength in temptation and eternal redemption be assured we ask this through christ our lord amen may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in peace glorifying the lord with your life there by the spirits [Music] true first again [Music] now sing praise the source of life to set us free [Music] friends of god yes [Music] this this so more so my foreign hello hey nice oh so three months it was off it was off at the time that's not this it's not this dave i think maybe it seemed like something wasn't being plugged in right here okay [Music] how are you there you go [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] i'm ready i'm usually used to getting here and having a lot more time because it's like the five or the nine so i figure we'll just touch on the ones that i struggled with and the preludes just just to be sure i know what i'm doing so this is it's uh verse chorus because it wasn't really written on the thing which dude right chorus and then verse three chorus that's it right over it's four okay so let's see so we go to the hearing one and then a chorus and then verse four okay and we don't do the double chorus like he does [Music] [Music] always jesus ever jesus christ in all of christ in me holy spirit guide my speaking words of grace my lips be filled with stories [Music] my [Music] is [Music] let your voice be [Music] me [Music] all right [Music] [Applause] [Music] i just lost it on my sheet hand [Music] holy [Music] kneading holding clinging till [Music] holy spirit [Music] i printed out a chord sheet but but i forgot to cross off all the stuff i didn't need that's like oh my god where's verse 4. i know where it is so the girl that came to you to ask to sing her name i forget her name sixth grader yeah violet so she's john stone's kids who are friends of ours and i didn't know it was her so she's coming to my house wednesday to do some recording yeah we're going to record that irish blessing song so i'm going to start working on the tracks for it tomorrow and then she's going to come over wednesday night oh my she got a great voice her mom sent me a recording of her singing and then i got the actual recording of uh laurie true who does the song the irish singer yeah let's go over this led by the spirit just like one verse i just want to hear the
