seventh sunday in ordinary time we would like you to wear a mask for the safety of everyone present there are extra masks in the gathering space and we ask that you receive communion in your hand if you prefer to receive on the tongue approach father talbot at the end of the procession our presider is our pastor father talbot please stand as we begin our celebration [Music] let us and dreams [Music] is [Music] hear us [Music] in this place [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you good evening everyone you're very welcome here a special welcome to any guests visitors we have with us it's great great to have you here you picked a great weekend to be here we're in the process of visioning and during the homily today kind of give a very short homily and then give everyone an opportunity to express how you think we should be church moving forward um and then for those who want you can stay after and and we'll do a little bit more of that so it's a very exciting time if you weren't here last week you heard that we've paid off our our debt we're no longer constrained by that that piece of great news thanks to your generosity and so we have much to be grateful for as parishioners of saint mary's as we come together to celebrate these beautiful mysteries we hear the challenge in the gospel jesus calling us to this particular way of life to model ourself on him for those times we have failed to love god love our neighbor love ourself as we should let's ask for god's mercy you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life peace you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly father lord jesus you take away the sins of the world [Music] have mercy on us glory to god glory to god glory to god in my highest peace on earth let us pray grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abhishei went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abhishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abhishei do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone's seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord so so is [Music] kindness the lord is the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful rich in kindness the lord is bless the god's lord bless the lord for god's blessings is kindness the lord is the lord is gracious full of compassion is [Music] kindness the lord is [Music] the goodness of god is from age to wage blessing those who choose to love and just [Music] is kind and merciful the lord is rich in kindness the lord is kind and merciful [Music] so a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural than the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord hallelujah i am the light of the world says the lord [Music] hallelujah lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others what you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in turn be measured out to you the gospel of the lord i want st mary of the lake to be a beacon in the white bear lake community that hope was expressed by more than one parishioner completing the dream survey they want our parish to be a beacon a light in the community to which people are drawn to which people are attracted fulfilling that hope is one of the goals of this vision work that we're doing that you're going to help with tonight how can we be that light in the community to be a light to be a beacon should immediately call to mind jesus who said of himself i am the light of the world we sang that as our gospel refrain i am the light of the world if jesus is the light of the world and we want to be light in our community then we need to conform ourself to christ we need to allow his light to shine through us individually and as a parish saint paul makes a similar point in today's second reading the christian and by extension the christian community must bear the image of the heavenly one must bear the image of of christ those who bear the image of christ possess the light of christ those who follow the lord's teachings reflect the lord's light those who obey his commandments of love and mercy will they bask in his light those who generously steward god's gifts bring light to others in many ways the parish is already that light in the community through worship and educational opportunities service and outreach how can we do better right where do we need to grow how can we attract home our fellow catholics who are not participating now in the life of the parish how can we be a beacon to those who do not yet know the good news of jesus how can we show our young people that christ and his church this is the place for them to discover their greatest happiness how do we attend to those on the margins of life loving them as an expression of our love for god how do we bring them the light of christ i want say mary the lake to be a beacon to this white bear lake community i hope everyone shares in the shares that hope for the parish right this is the mission of the church to bring the light of christ to bring the good news of jesus to the world and the question i want to put to all of us is how do we make this at saint mary of the lake right so there's dream surveys at the end of each a pew ask people at the end to pass them down along with a pencil some people went on uh and saw just the first three questions about how old you are and uh how long you've been a parishioner you go well father you're not gonna get much out of that but there was a bigger question at the end that says what are your dreams for the parish what do we need what resources what space what programs what people what technology what finances what do you want what do you think we need what is god asking of us as a parish what does nora need she'll be a student here suit in seven or eight years think of the future for our young people so everybody's we're going to take about four or five minutes then i'm gonna have the ushers go through and pick up the surveys and again after mass tonight if people want to stay and voice their dream for the parish i'm going to be here and would love to hear from from everyone as well so just some quiet time now you took another minute and then ushers if you're ready to pick up the surveys great saw a lot of people busy saw some people [Music] that's so busy uh you can take one of the surveys home many of you have already completed it online but why don't you just pass it down to the end and the ushers can pick those up this exercise is a lot funner the next week when we fill out the catholic services appeal in pew and just to follow up for next steps we'll collect all these try to group them into categories and then a committee kind of helps sort those out and report to me and the parish leadership committee and then report back to you as to this first step in the process this is only the first step the other one just raise your hand if you got your survey you want them to pick it up you can also drop it in the collection basket if you're still working on it all right please stand as we make our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from lights true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen inspired by the holy spirit we turn to god with our prayers that the church should be a sign of unity and reconciliation we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that politicians and civil servants serve with joy and compassion we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who suffer addictions of any kind for healing not judgment we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may heal those alienated from the church by seeking their forgiveness for past hurts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all of us here have a renewed spirit of forgiveness peace and harmony we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the homebound hospitalized and sick may they rest their faith on the power of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they receive from the lord's hand the gift of eternal life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of our personal intentions and especially for lyle gatsmeyer jerry and marilyn malipinsky and saint mary's parish we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving god you sent your son jesus as the perfect image of love and mercy as we work to conform ourselves to christ may we live and act in your image so that we can continue to make your kingdom present in the world we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] open my eyes lord help me to see your face open my eyes lord help me see my eyes help me to hear your voice open my ears open my heart lord help me to help me to love [Music] in places i live within you [Music] deep in your heart [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father as we celebrate your mysteries oh lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord his death we celebrate in love his resurrection we confess with living faith and his coming in glory we await with unwavering hope and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim lord god of hosts heaven and earth [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] highest you therefore almighty father we bless you jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend to sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us when we ourselves had turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled o lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another through your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your son whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined at supper he himself took bread into his hands and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands confessing your mercy and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us also together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously to endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another may he make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people and may he keep us in communion with francis our pope and bernard our bishop and all the bishops and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and all the saints with our brothers and sisters and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity in a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ jesus our lord [Music] through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let's acknowledge one another with some sign or word of peace [Music] i am
