thirty Seconds athletes please place your hand on your name marker ten seconds standby and here we go ladies and gentlemen our individual male athletes kicking things off with that 400 meter run a workout that was posted on CrossFit comm and there they go Larry which by the way great job on all the names thank you sir they are making their way around the band Larry Kiki and I are gonna give our best job to call the action but there are 50 athletes on this field fighting and clawing their way up that leaderboard because they want to return and join in on the action that later today this first of it the first cut and already just like that Larry our first set of athletes already out on that field a lot of new faces [Music] some poor Ben Smith Brin Madeo Andrews a lotta all of them making the move as they started those legless rope climbs Santos making his way over say what these boys make it short work of that first 400 Josh they got to pace themselves some of these athletes first time seeing competition and things gonna get real interesting a ladies and gentlemen when these athletes get over to the barbell these athletes making a short work of those legless rope climbs [Music] and already a handful of athletes Jean Claude Jardine Madison Bob way over to the barbell first gets underneath it fall Susie's Ben Smith getting a successful lifts so Ben Smith looking to lead the pack [Applause] I'll passe with an attempt on that 185 no go mahoto looked like he was good on his first lift awesome way out of Nigeria getting underneath the bar as he is keeping pace with Ben Smith who you know saw us away and Ben Smith your one and twos and this is gonna separate the boys from the men the men from the boys as Ben Smith getting another successful lift it's separating himself from the pack right there in lane number 14 Big Ben Smith all right remember these athletes have to have a top time if they want to continue on it this CrossFit Games journey they're not just competing with the athletes in this heat we have two more heats remaining as Ben Smith makes his way out onto his run and we got another athlete approaching the runner as well Ben Smith receiving a wild-card spot and he is taking advantage of it [Applause] very grateful for his return to the CrossFit Games a couple of hands in the air mahoto with just a handful of reps took oh what's up making his way out on the run so we have three athletes make that five athletes we're turning into their second round but here is Captain America himself Ben Smith wasting no time as he gets ready to start round at number two making his way in as we pass five minutes on the clock Josh Ben Smith already into his second run approaching of those two legless rope climbs remember this event posted this morning for the daily workout of the day 400 meter run three on legless rope climbs and seven squat snatches at a 185 and panel with a tremendous lead ilex megan is away back on to that competition floor killer event to start our individual competition announced earlier today posted last night the representative from Slovenia in second place bid Smith John with the ropes heading back to the barbell looking to open that lead farther we are at the six-minute mark and we have two more athletes coming out Neil and are represented in out of Nigeria we Nosa Vernon Neal out of Belize and here comes some of the other athletes but all eyes are on Ben Smith been making quick work staying in the pocket believe we are five reps in if I'm counting correctly coming to the end of this round on the barbell we still have some athletes working on their first round a squat snatches as Ben Smith chips away a [Applause] 20-minute cap and Ben wraps up this round look for him to move that marker now ladies and gentlemen here on the North Park field the second and from Stevie the third and fourth round will be on the other side so Ben has currently finished two rounds his third and fourth round will be on the other side of that chess piece closer to the end zone or the finish will further separate the leaders you're be able to see them on the other side and there goes up and Smith into his third around Bowie nose also had a Nigeria in second Vern and Neil in at third Vernon representing Belize Josh's bit makes his second run refreshing his third run come back to start round number three I believe he'll still be on this side that fourth and final round will be on the other side of the markers he managed to make some noise for these athletes dude Oregon's got to be nerve-racking they made the trip they're representing their country their family and friends it's show them a little bit of love as they work hard through individual event number one a loonie Mahato Flavian to all these athletes a look at the finish up alar I've done heading out on his next run Almonte finishing up that rope climb just a couple to go as we hit nine minutes on the clock [Applause] and here he comes out ladies and gentlemen band Smith finishing up his third run and approaching those rope climbs as we approach the halfway mark er about ten and a half minutes remaining in this event and Ben Smith looking to put a top time passes 940 on the clock still several athletes fighting the way through round number one on the snatches Mahato good rep handful left before him oh maybe an eyeball in the barbell edema Oh ghana doing the same just a handful of reps to go I'll pate advancing into the next round [Applause] been working on that third around all the legless rope climbs Joshua will pass that halfway point 10 minutes and 30 seconds elapsed out of this 20 minute time cap and here he comes Larry [Applause] reaching that barbell for the third time that last barbell correct myself what will happen on the very far end so that last round will be completed at the far end all three rounds on this end as Ben Smith looking to chip away at those squat snatches 185 pounds been working on that barbell you said about the third round one round to go and again that final round will take part take place on the other side of the markers for our side of the field for the final round right now though it's all been all smashes and almost all done además scoring another rep very short breaks for Smith and a thumbs up from his judge and Ben heads to move that marker before he begins the fourth and final round you know what about 12 minutes [Applause] and there he goes uh ladies and gentlemen put your hands together for Ben Smith making his way out on that run for the final time here come some of the rest of the pack who knows huh making his way over to that rogue rig all these athletes trying to catch up to the former fittest man on earth of Ben Smith Andre Labonte Thibodeau chipping away at it longer Napoli with about a half the reps done on this round would making his way out on to that run Keith neon from Vietnam the national champion trying to fight his way up that legless rope climb with 13 30 on the clock [Applause] a wada making his way back on to that competition floor Vernon Neil right behind him but ladies and gentlemen Madison Wisconsin make some noise finishing up his final run mr. Ben Smith [Applause] is three legless rope climbs and seven squat snatches away from a first place of victory in this heat and the boys of heat two and three and I have to take notice as have Ben Smith looking to make a statement for this first event Johnny we open up on 15 minutes on the clock as a pin completes his next rope climb then the savvy veteran chipping away at those rope climbs taking adequate rest meanwhile our athletes Neal jean-claude is your Dean we know sound also a beer Smith Josh chilling with the rope climbs I keep your eyes on her folks as he heads across the field into uncharted territory for this heat heading to the final bar bill to complete round number four and here he goes ladies and gentlemen there is one Ben Smith no stranger the snatching heavyweight as he is three reps in the bank [Music] [Music] coming down to the end for Ben Smith quick turnaround for big pinon and a turn and a burn and he will head across that line and take heat one in our first day of competition Big Ben setting the time to be that is a statement maker right there Ben Smith setting a blistering time and our remaining athletes have a little over seven minutes to finish we have a three athletes which cb2 athletes remaining into that fourth and final round can they make it back to that fourth and final barbell as we inch closer and closer to that 20-minute time cap you said it brother passing 17 minutes on the clock less than three minutes to go we know saw out of a Nigeria and Alex Adams Slovenia are our two remaining athletes that have their marker in round number four looking to finish up either their run or those legless rope climbs cutter email leaving for Morocco moving his marker to the next round he heads out on a run as we approached two minutes two minutes remaining gentlemen you got some athletes moving into that fourth round trying to get as far into this event our first event of individual competition 90 seconds you said her brother andre alpar Tay from Tonga with one rope climbed to go before he moves to the barbell with just under 90 seconds one minute athletes one minute keeping our eyes peeled for that next athlete making their way in to finish up I don't know if we'll see it with 40 seconds remaining Keith neon of Vietnam making another run at this legless rope climb so close on a couple of attempts on Keith you could do it I went up about 20 seconds come on Madison make some noise these athletes digging a lot of guts to come out here to compete on to this competition floor we got 10 seconds remaining we're gonna finish up folks three two one and that wraps up heating up or one ladies and gentlemen a big round of applause for all of our athletes huge shout out to Bennett Smith taking first place in Heat number one with a time of 16 minutes 28 seconds ten seconds standby [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] they are out on an that runner first Kiki 400 meters then they got some liquid rope climbs awaiting them followed by some squat snatches head 185 pounds this workout posted across medCom last night it was announced to the athletes this morning which one of these athletes here in heat number 2 - gonna threaten Ben Smith's top time as they make their way around the bend and it is Hunter McIntyre making his way in first hunter receiving one of those wild card spots as he makes his way over to his lane and now here come the rest of the pack [Music] Hunter hunter a lot to prove here we got Smith coming in hot so might as well [Music] get behind your favorite athlete right now and cheer him on help them out Nicolay out of norway the first athlete to get over to the barbell as he already completed the three squat snatches Bukowski in the mix Joshua G there's a lot at stake right here especially for this middle heat all of them want to continue on but they've got to set one of those chops times to do so I'm in out of Jordan completing another squat snatch Bukowski chipping away there goes Sanchez same story for comeback he gets a successful statute got caught and Ellen's in the house representing luxembourg out here today William Sanchez looking smooth out of Costa Rica James a Newberry out on his second run there goes pukowski the cows came making his way out on the run and now Miller also out on that run Josh ug there's a handful of fellows leading the charge there here comes Smith send out for Kowski guys give him a boost coming in hot a lot of athletes moving into that second round or and out of here out of Peru getting underneath same goes for Sebastian Rodriguez out of Ecuador he gets a good rep cam for knocking out a good rep as our athletes making their way around the bend onto that second run we have passed the four-minute marker here in heat number two event number one known as the first cut appropriately named-- indeed now josh ET that was will Morehead in Lane 26 a fleet 309 he was first out on that run so he'll make his way back in towards the middle of Zeus rig once he finishes up that run where four and a half minutes in here come our athletes Laura and Miller Newberry and the rest of the gang John Paul half in the mix as they make their way back to the Zeus rig Sanchez I'm making his way out on his second run same goes for Kemper the Kowski back onto that competition floor and Hunter back out onto that competition floor as he looks to take down around at number two here come all the men here heat number two a lot of these guys on the game's competition field for the very first time and they know like I was saying the stakes are high with event number one first cut [Music] we'll Mourad coming into this second round in first place James Newberry chasing him down as more and making his way over to the barbell getting underneath it with a good rep noob area right in front of them is that it is more ad representing the United States Newberry representing Australia as these two athletes go toe-to-toe Nicolay out of a Norway battling for that third place position here comes fikowski the Kowski in the mix don't count him out hunter making his way back to the barbell for his second round of squat snatches as we pass the six and a half minute mark Mourad finishing up his second round of squat snatches as he makes his way on to round and number three Newberry trying to hold on to that second place position as he moves his marker into that third round Newberry onto his third run but Kowski moving into round at number three as newberry makes his way out another athlete makes his way in here comes the caste Michael Smith out of Ireland also moving into that third round we have six athletes onto that third run as we approach the eight-minute marker remember a 20-minute cap Ben Smith with the top time of a little over 16 minutes hello Dell is out Smith on his way out hunter McIntyre holding his own as he moves into that third round a little over eight minutes in on Heat number two event number one first cut few more these athletes making their way out to that run little gonna start that next round Sauter on to that run but it is more add the first athlete back James and Newberry hot on his heels these two athletes getting ready to start their a third a set of rope lines separated by just a few seconds Nick block headed out on his next run the Kowski looking to take over that third place position John or Paul half-cock in a third effect Kowski and forth so it is Mourad Newberry fikowski and half-cock with a slew of other athletes of making their way back onto that competition floor for the third time hunter McIntyre back out onto that field the first three rounds on this first barbell the fourth and final round if you guys are looking for your leader you just walked out on lane number six of Zeus shocking up those hands you getting ready for some snatches borad trying to hold on to that lead but Newberry approaching his barbell morad is in the Navy shorts no shirt and then Newberry in the party shorts right there compliments a Reebok you can see your one and two side by side and they are going rep for rep with one another will with a slight a lead over Newberry Smith finishing up his rope climbs as he approaches the barbell pukowski chasing down and Newberry as the professor gets underneath that barbell stands up tall for a good rep wide hits another one same story for Newberry Bukowski setting up Bukowski is in the blue tank top and those teal shorts he is next to Newberry who's in the teal shorts no shirt but your leader making his way to that chest piece that name marker lane 26 give it up for well volatile hind is James Newberry so your leader you can see him going underneath lane number six right now of the Zeus rig and then to his right we've got Newberry's he is going to be a photo finish between these two tremendous athletes Bukowski letting already hear bears out with the round of applause give it up one more an and and Newberry you're one and two making their way out to the run you can see them up there on that Jumbotron and they're off a little over 12 minutes into event number one heat to that time cap is set at 20 minutes and here comes Canada's very own Brent fikowski ladies and gentlemen Michael Smith out of Ireland advancing it into that fourth round so we have four athletes working hard into that fourth and final round 13 minutes in we are 13 minutes in Waikiki mentioned some of these athletes on this competition floor for the very first time you're right about that their first time in Madison Wisconsin and certainly their first time here at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games each of them representing a lot of athletes out here representing their nation for the first time here and it looks like me growing what's up Josh eg James Newberry taking over the lead Mourad now sitting in second can James and Newberry hold on to this lead as he approaches the zeus rig for the fourth and final time Newberry is in lane number 7 guys take your eyes to lane number 7 he's working that legless rope climb he's got no shirt teal shorts on and he gets his first legless climb so he has one rep ahead of Moorhead right now who is to his right in lane number 6 Mora now working his way up he's in the blue shorts no shirt touches the top of the Zeus rig and is back down so both of those athletes you're 1 & 2 with the 1 rep here goes Newberry now Newberry looking to finish up these rope climbs as pukowski your third athlete into that fourth round Bukowski making his way to his designated rope as James taking a breather James a new barry wilmore at a brent fikowski as we hit the 15 a minute marker lane number 7 James Newberry almost the top of the Zeus rig and he gets the thumbs up from his judges able to advance on so your leader rocking the teal shorts no shirt hustle and Josh Yugi talk to me he's got about a minute or so if he wants to take down a banna Smith's time he gets to his barbell as we hit 15 and a half minutes James Newberry wasting no time getting under 185 James with a two reps in will Mourad chasing him down we're approaching sixteen minutes four minutes are remaining or four of the rest of the athletes but all eyes are on James new barry wilmore add and now brent fikowski they are down at the far end towards that finish line it's going to be James Newberry Newberry finishing up under 16 minutes and 30 seconds I don't know we'll have to go to the scorecards he may have beat Ben Smith by a couple of seconds but we'll find out here the Kowski getting underneath the barbell chasing down a will more add more ad trying to finish up ahead of pukowski and he does ladies and gentlemen make some noise for Wilmore [Applause] seven minutes in Michael Smith Brant pukowski fighting for third and ladies and gentlemen a handful of fellas three to be exact nikka way out of a Norway in the mix Newbery had a time of 1619 so he has now set that time to be Michael Smith finishing underneath that time cap as we are approaching the two-minute warning we have a five athletes on that final barbell that's right Madison don't be shy help these athletes how couple more athletes crossing that finish line they know what's at stake they want to come back later on today to put on a show not against as we're looking for those Cinderella stories those show stealers will one of these athletes advance into that second event they got about a minute and 15 seconds to do so you're right about that Josh Yugi will they make the cut coming up on that final minute these athletes are looking to do that on another athlete coming across that finish line two more athletes crossing the finish line making that three athletes as Sauter Ryan Sauter 45 seconds just under 30 seconds come on ladies and gentlemen cheer on these athletes with about 30 seconds remaining 15 seconds seven athletes on earth at final barbell how many reps can they get with less than ten seconds remaining shutting down in 3 2 1 time ladies and gentlemen a big round of applause to all these athletes and a shout out to James Newberry setting the new time to beat at 16 19 1 heat remains for the men here in the opening event for the individuals at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games in Madison Wisconsin the event is simply entitled first cut because that's exactly what's gonna happen after you've done with this heat we're gonna cut the field down to just 75 athletes I'm Sean woodland with Danny Sakamoto chase Ingram has stepped here up to the desk to help us out with the individual competition event number one was posted on the main site last night we were talking about it JC rocket interviews this is gonna be effective if I can quote the great samuel l.jackson from Jurassic Park hold on to your butt's because we got four rounds for two meter run three legless rope climbs and seven squat snatches at 185 for the men and just looking at this on paper I think this is a perfect vent to start with you got a long event 15 to 20 minute time frame 12 legless rope climbs it's just hit me in the face right off the bat that is a lot of legless rope climbs and then doing squat snatches at 185 is never a sure thing not for twenty eight reps and not with the grip you're gonna have going into this later two rounds it's gonna be very interesting to see that athletes do the top athletes from the world wide open are out on the field and including names that we are very familiar with mat Fraser is gonna be out there Cole Sager another guy we expect to be in contention Scott pantings had a great career here at the CrossFit Games so far in this event though we've only seen 14 athletes finished and they are all names that we would expect to see finish the event so far what's impressed to you about what you see in these first eight weeks well I'm highly impressed by Ben Smith's performance especially considering that he had nobody in that heat to gauge his pace off if he didn't know if he was going too fast too slow too quick on the rope climbs and to think that he held and almost about an approximate four-minute round for four rounds it's just really impressive are you looking at it from a strategic standpoint it's like they just figured this out this morning this is an event that if you push too hard too soon when specifically looking at the legless rope lines two back-to-back not really a problem for any of the athletes but that third climb with 12 total this is an event where the rope climb can not only make or break the heat but make or break the rest of your weekend Matt Fraser first time he will be competing here at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games lined up right next to take a pepper on his left talked about it earlier today for the last time that Matt Fraser finished lower than first at an in-person competition was in 2015 when he was second to Ben Smith of the CrossFit Games he has won everything Jason Smith is another man who has been to the CrossFit Games before he's out of South Africa he was a guy who went to regionals every year and just couldn't get himself across again finally did that a couple years ago we are underway file heat of first cut and you know what they say Shawn the first cup is usually the deepest and I think that is true in this case today and a lot of these athletes who are out here in this final heeled thing Oh quite a few of them have games experience a lot of over fixtures at the regional level as well so we expect to see more men in this heat finish this event against so far only 14 Ben Smith in the first he was the only guy to do it thirteen men finished it in heat number two none did it faster than James Newberry who has the time to beat 16 minutes 21 point one nine seconds hitting Ben Smith to seven seconds behind him all the way from he won and shiny saved 14 finish let's put that in perspective out of a hundred people who are already taking the field right only 14 people have finished so I think that this is kind of lending to the ideas at on paper this really doesn't look that bad when you look at the numbers of for two meter run four rounds three rope climbs seven cent this is a devastating event and I love having the perspective out there of seeing you know 86 athletes not able to complete it in the time capturing you how difficult this really is well and it reminds me of some of the open workouts where there's a good chunk of people that can do the work but then there's a small chunk of people that can do the work really fast and really well and that's what we're seeing there just about all the athletes are back inside the stadium after their initial 400 meter run and now it is on to those three legless rope climbs before seven squat snatches at 185 pounds Jason Smith was the first guy back in but he had the furthest distance to travel as he had to go all the way back down the field you have to go back to your nameplate once you get back inside the stadium there's Matt Fraser I feel like this is the toughest round to kind of approach because having very little time to practice this you have some semblance of how long a round might take especially when you have Ben Smith leading the charge in heat one being able to see that but managing your work in the first three because you have cuts looming over your head you're in a heat of the 50 fittest individuals in the entire world everybody's starting out hot everybody starting out fast managing that first round is going to be the most important part of this event here's the thing you finished this event you're moving on that's pretty guaranteed at this point Matt Fraser was one of the first men onto the barbell working on his first set of seven squat snatches Shaun Sweeney who is in the background he's won a white hat he was second Pat Felner is there and he's in front of Sweeney he's towards the top of your screen and Cole Sager is on the upper left-hand part he's wearing that green shirt but Matt Fraser just continuing to do what he does to work away methodically on this barbell as he likes to put the finishing touches on round one and he has done he will move his chest beast and head back out for his second 400 meter run Pat belapur and Shaun Sweeney table your screen they are done as well the thing that these athletes need to know and understand in terms of what this event is going to dictate is being methodical as you just said but being near perfect technique once there is no room for sloppiness in this event because of the rope climbs themselves three back to back at that height legless is gonna blow up your grip it's gonna blow up your shoulders and if you have any type of mechanical flaw on the snatch it's going to get exposed later down the road well both of those those movements are movements where one missed rep is not just in it you know I missed rep like a total arc we're talking about a lot of effort that goes into especially a legless rope climb that's a lot of energy lost if you miss a rep on the legless rope climb and even a heavy snatch Shaun Sweeney in the lead here on this second 400 meter run by not by much Pat Feldman right behind him and Matt Fraser has made up some ground they are your top three at this point now Fraser looking like he's moving ahead of Pat Bellmer for second place as they put the finishing touches on their second of four 400 meter runs the rest of the field getting back out there Travis Mayer Nicolle ski also in this heat Chandler Smith is in the background he sits in fourth place Jason Smith is behind him but these are your top three from left to right Matt Fraser Shawn Sweeney and Pat Bellary I think you can't see but just by looking at on-camera is what it feels like to be out there I was out there earlier there's no clouds out here and it's Madison and it's cool but that Sun gets hot and it gets hot very quick when you think about running to those mats with a black tarp right running out to the competition floor where it's fieldturf where it just sucks in heat from the Sun that heat factor almost becomes disorienting as the event goes on that Fraser first back to the rope for the second of four times he has three legless rope climbs to complete Pat vulner there as well as Shawn Sweeney they are your top three in this third and final heat of first cut the opening event of the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games for the individuals usually you see Shawn Sweeney competing in a cowboy hat he's going with the backwards baseball cap I think Reebok has started making those yet I'm getting to see at the games this year once I make the the Reebok nano 10-gallon it was that thing on Pat velder is done with his second round of road climbs and he will move on to the barbell Bellator Fraser and Sweeney still your top three Fraser to work first on a second set of seven 185 pound squat snatches and this is wearing efficiency in the movement is so vital to the success of this particular event something like a snatch in itself is the most technically demanding lift that we have in CrossFit and weightlifting now throw that into a full depth squat even more challenging put 185 pounds on the bar we're just adding to the difficulty of this so if you don't have the technique and if you don't have the efficiency this becomes actually the biggest challenge for a lot of these athletes who don't have that Fraser tears through those seven he's through two of four rounds now he starts round three with that 400 meter run out and around the stadium here at the Alliant Energy Center the crowd coming to its feet is Fraser sheds the shirt and he is all by himself but Pat just finished up his snatches I think he's Fraser has a little bit of a lead on him but he's holding tight to Matt's back right now the two men we expected to be fighting for the top of the podium fighting for the top spot here in this third and final heat of the opening event Fraser out first Pat Felder right behind him we're talking about a four round event there's always that round or that rep scheme that is the the difference-maker being about the 2159 it's the 15 we need time about a four rounder it's the third round it's kind of that no-man's land I call it the Tuesday of the week I just finished Monday Wednesday is hump day who cares about Tuesday right and that third round is so vital in terms of staying focused and not ahead understanding of what you just did is not necessarily going to double and either terms up I feel good or I feel bad so that third round is really going to be even where they can ingrain what it is they're trying to achieve within this event in terms of pacing in tempo James Newberry has the time to beat did that in the second of these three heat 16 minutes 21 point one nine seconds and Matt Fraser is well ahead of that pace and looking to win his tenth career event at the CrossFit Games Fraser in his career has never finished lower than second overall now Shawn Sweeney is on his run he has fallen well back of Fraser and velmer your leaders here as they finish up their third of four 400 meter runs Bell took a part be Fraser took a quick look over his right shoulder to see where Beltre was Fraser back in first and Beltre right behind him and you could see on Shawn Sweeney kind of the Tuesday that you were talking about setting in there chase he looked a lot more labored on that third month than he did on the second one so it'll be interesting to see if he can hold close to vulner and and Fraser on this round Matt Fraser now starting to lap some people in this third Heat here comes Chandler Smith he qualified due to his finish at the rogue Invitational in May making his first appearance at the CrossFit Games Shawn swinging he was in the background he's coming back in so he has fallen off the lead bassist Matt Fraser gets to work on his third set of three legless rope climbs Bellmer trying to keep pace he was in second place behind Fraser as they started this third round will pull the rounds in this event 20-minute time cap it's starting to see the laboring on those that that third climate is that magic numbers like you can do one you can fake two but get into that third one after three you know that's number nine so they got three more after this that's the crazy part of it I think a lot of these athletes maybe he got shocked after that second round base up for what those legless rope climbs felt like just all the time to be that belong to James Newberry as Matt Fraser gets to work on his third of four sets of squats snatches at 185 pounds seven reps to complete Chandler Smith back on the rope for his third round of legless rope locks great little Kip to touch on that one that was a really well timed you know where he finished that last strict pole and then went for that Kip to touch the road rig there now fella Mercer was struggle with 185 he's gonna fight that and that's a no rep for Pat velvet for the first time and that's the crazy thing about snatches at that certain weight because you know you can fake a clean you can have a low elbow catch you can maybe not get your wrists in the right position you can't do that with a snatch especially at this way and I think it's that perfect weight that allows people to push the pace but can hurt them if they push it too fast too soon and that Fraser is taking advantage and he is done with three rounds and you could see him taking a look at where Valmer was and Fraser is not going to open up even more of a lead on Beltre as he starts his fourth and final round Beltre oh fails another snack [Music] Cole Sager meanwhile left your screen he's on his third round this was the nervousness that I saw from the athletes who understood what this event was actually going to be like because when you throw something in like high volume legless rope plants it's not even necessarily a fitness issue it's a grip issue and when that grip goes you can be the strongest fittest most conditioned athlete in the entire world it ain't coming back yeah doesn't look like Matt Fraser is gonna be coming back to the field because he is running away with this event now Chandler Smith and Bartek Lipka leaving the stadium believe Lipka is starting his third round see Chandler Smith is now in second place and here comes Pat valor who was able to make up some ground so he's got a reel in Chandler Smith now the good news for anybody who finishes inside the top ten here is that there's only a two-point differential between those spots so if Beltre were to finish third and Fraser were to win he's only four points back so that's just that's fine at this point and let's talk about kind of valanor stay one event one you know history history getting a 30th place I'm not saying it's gonna finish there but maybe backing off a little bit because we don't want to fall down any more than we already are getting a 30th 30th place finish in this event is not as detrimental as it was in years past in terms of the points absolutely not yeah that's a good point they look 45 points again is xxx to be still in there it's a lot of boys up for grabs later on and we got a long way to go make a good I mean you don't want to push yourself beyond the point of recovery and an event like this where you really just need to get up in the top 75 and can do a little damage control I'm not sure how they'll nerf use coming in his fourth round but what we saw at the end of the third what he has left to do I hope there's not an onset of panic that may disrupt the tempo he should probably back off the throttle just a little bit that one right he's right where he needs to be no no reason to panic for Pat Velda right now his Matt Fraser is back into the stadium for the fourth and final time and he will get set to get to work on his third and final set of three legless rope lines Chandler Smith now sits in second place in Chandler Smith and Patton Felder back inside the stadium so Beltre looks like he was able to make up some ground on that 400 meter run the others actually had some very good runs each in every round he's been able to make up a lot of ground Fraser with two to go [Music] one legless rope climb left for Matt Fraser before seven final squat snatches of 185 pounds and then that sprint across the finish line time to beat belong to James Newberry sixteen minutes twenty one point one nine seconds looks like Fraser is gonna track that down just saw Chandler Smith complete his first legless rope climb in his fourth and final round only fourteen men so far have completed all this work inside the 20-minute time gap what has been so impressive to me on Matt Fraser and we'll see if we can hold it on this last round but he snatches he drops the barbell and a lot of these gentlemen are stepping back and then stepping to the barbell he stays with his shins right against that barbell puts his hands on it grabs it and goes again and now phrase we're back to the barbell for the final time seven reps between Matt Fraser and his tenth career event win at the CrossFit Games not velma meanwhile trying to overtake Chandler Smith for second place in this heat the Beller is done and he's going to be making his way to the barbell behind Matt Fraser Chandler Smith has done as well have to run all the way to the other end of the field to get to work meanwhile Fraser continues to put the finishing touches on his events I love the heat that Chandler Smith is putting on Pat Bella right now he's two reps in and I don't know that Pat is yet lifted that barbell one different year different format different event same result Matt Fraser wins event number one in dominant fashion now the battle for second between Pat Beltre on the left Chandler Smith on the right [Music] you know the biggest problem we saw at Chandler Smith in his early years competing is his confidence in himself and his ability to compete with the best in the field starting off an event one like this on the biggest stage of his life in terms of strasse it's gonna speak volumes to the weekend and there he goes Chandler Smith will take second place in the event that will be good for 98 points third place still up for grabs as James Newbery's top time of 16 21 point one nine seconds is now your third best and Felner has time to get in inside of that if he finishes 30 earns 96 points so only four back on that phrase are now another no rep for Pat Beltre here less than four minutes to go before we hit the 20-minute time cap and more men are making their way to the other side of the field now to start their third and fourth rounds of this events of Bellmer with a successful rep right there he won't finish third and he is in we have it looks like some other athletes come across the finish line while we were watching founder Scott panchik came in guman Singh Adler so a handful of men getting in ahead of pat Valtor will have to wait to the final results to see just exactly how many but so far 10 men in this heat have finished Velda right now would take ninth in the event that's good for 84 points so 16 back and that Fraser is Shawn Sweeney is now on the barbell for the final time but here are the men who have finished so far in this heat Fraser's Smith Scott panchik uriburu Burton Adler Cole Sager valanor Fournier Jason Smith Travis Mayer Hefner Samuel Quandt Noah ohlsen Jason Carroll Logan columns are all across the finish line so many of the names that we have seen computer in the past or through this event and they will be moving on that's once again we're cutting the field down to 75 athletes after this test but there's still a good amount of time till the time cap we have two and a half minutes so there's a good chance that almost all if not all of these gentlemen can finish this event Shawn Sweeney will come across the finish line 18 from the seat 20 seconds in the event that's 58 points in this thing and you know it's how fun is it was like oh I hope donors okay you'll be fine you'll be fine it's like that's how good Matt Fraser is right is that you just made everyone looked like something was wrong with them of how much you are dominating his Heat still a top-10 finish for Pat Miller and given how we started competitions in the past that's a huge win for him huge win and here where I uh sighs something's wrong poor Pat done I was like oh you got top ten you're good okay nothing's wrong with Pat because everything is right with mat freeze it is one of his best starts but again notoriously the cross the games have started with a water event which Pat vulner does not do well at so hopefully as we stated earlier a water event doesn't come up later in the CrossFit Games Sonico skiing Lucas Aisling or they also finished as well actually we're taking 31st basically to get across the finish line here inside of 20 minute time tap you are going to move on [Music] [Applause] more men coming across the finish line as you take a look at Lucas code burger the man who finished third place overall last year his best career finish at the CrossFit Games was never lower than third overall that entire time in 2018 he had a heck of a competition here in Madison last year but it's not going to start off there after this event is Homburg will take 39th in the event but still very much alive as that as Willie George a national champion from France's across I would mean you know I just came across Kole Sager as he always is is backing on the field trying to get the crowd behind Matt like Eric Carmody who's still on the field trying to get as many reps as he can as we approach the 20-minute time cap and that will do it [Music] well the 10th time in his career Matt Fraser wins an event 15 minutes seven point seven zero seconds and Matt Fraser is one of those athletes that you watch him in round one and you watch them in round four and you really can't tell much of a difference and that's where I think the misconception comes from how easy this really is virtuosity has this finest in the highest stage with the biggest stakes but Matt Fraser can do and how easy he makes it look and it's almost scary Fraser from the beginning what I like to see from Matt is that he was really pacing the runs and so on the runs he really throttled back a little bit and then when he got to the rope that's when you know Matt being so strategic and cerebral about who he is as an athlete how we can take breaks in between but even then you see how tough that ended up being but here's where Matt separates himself from the rest of the field is just that methodical meticulous and just exquisite technique with things like high skill to NASA's high skill Olympic lifts and and Fraser is that when you combine that skill talent and technique with just the workhorse engine that he is created for himself it's just I'm gonna just sit back and just enjoy the show that Matt Fraser is going to put on over the next four days meanwhile Pat Felder some no reps that cost him you I don't say dearly could you still finish in the top ten that's a great result for him but he was staring a second place in the face for a while there and then fell off that face it was kind of hard to tell where he wasn't you can see is like that is not necessarily a poor technical lift it's just absolute fatigue and his shoulders are blown out and it is grip but Fraser a minute and a half against the rest of the field in the first event it's this is the beginning of the end right for you here at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games than we know how incredible of an athlete you are and how capable you are but you came out here with nearly a hundred fifty other guys than you knew that cuts were coming so how concerned were you about this new format you're always comfortable thinking you know if everything if I don't get injured I'll be fine make it out of that round but just want to start collecting points as early as I can definitely on your way know you were able to qualify for the games at the very first opportunity back in Dubai last December you just extended your training season how did that prepare you were high you know my train season before where I like them so I try to keep it as close down as I could so I competed that rogue still did the open just kept things the same it's great to see you back out here congratulation thank you [Applause] ten career event wins the cross of games for Matt Fraser as he beats Chandler Smith by more than 30 seconds great finish for Chandler Smith panchik is fourth your burn Carl Gunnarsson finishes fifth as Pat Bellmer who is among the leaders for most of the event who will take ninth and he will lock up 84 points in the process back
