Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ENDING EXPLAINED (In-Depth Analysis)

Final Fantasy 7 rebirth has a wild and controversial ending to say the least exploring the concept of multiple universes the story of rebirth significantly deviates from the original plot while also timeline switching frequently in some pretty jarring ways it's a lot to digest and keep track of so if you're looking for some clarity don't worry I got you covered because in this video we're going to break down the ending of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth and what it means for the story going forward I'll also tie in some lore from the original game to help make sense of everything so without further Ado let's buckle up grab some ice coffee and explore the ending of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth let's start off by quickly recapping the end of chapter 13 where cloud and crew descend into the Temple of the Ancients in search of the black Materia there are some significant revelations in the final sequence that are important for gaining a full understanding of the ending after escaping the temple Barrett snatches the black Materia out of Cloud's hands this orb is not the true black Materia but a fake or a key as aith and searo mentioned besides there's no point fighting over a fake this is the key which grants access to the true counterpart hidden Between Worlds Barrett tosses the materal on the ground and seph appears to grab it at this point he transforms it into the true form of the black Materia and we can see a glimpse of arth's body inside the orb seph beckons Cloud to bring him the true black Materia but Tia tackles his ass and aith grabs it instead at this point cloud is in full-on puppet mode and he starts chasing after aith to get the black Materia back for SEO side note like all soldiers and the husk men we see in the black robes cloud has been injected with Genova's genetic material so in some cases he loses his own faculties as the goova DNA takes over and compels him to follow sephra will another important Revelation here is that the black Whispers we see throughout ff7 rebirth are not merely the Arbiters of Fate they are controlled by SEO basically these are not the same Whispers we dealt with in ff7 remake personally I think all the Whispers nonsense is pretty dumb but hey I'm just doing my job here and trying to make sense of the ending in any case Cloud Corners aith at the end of a whisper tendril and so she relinquishes the black Materia to avoid a fight cloud hands the Materia to sepo but then a whisper knocks aith off the ledge Cloud grabs her hand and saves her from falling at the last moment perhaps a reference to a similar scene we see in the original game where Cloud saves Tifa but it's too soon to celebrate because now that cloud has handed over the black Materia he's outlived his usefulness and aith is still the greatest threat to seph's plans so he cuts the tendril causing cloud and aith to plummet into the pit below and this is where things start to get a little wild Final Fantasy 7 rebirth explores the concept of a Multiverse so before we proceed it's important to recognize that there are three separate timelines or worlds that we get a window into during the ending most of the time it will be clear which timeline we are dealing with but sometimes the game flips between timelines mid cutscene it can get a little confusing so to help you out I'll put a little note on the screen during these parts so it will always be clear which timeline we are witnessing the first timeline is the OG timeline which follows the events of the original Final Fantasy 7 in this world Zach is killed by Shinra soldiers outside midgar before the game even begins he's only mentioned in passing and in some hidden cutscenes aith is killed by searo in the Forgotten Capital while she prays to the planet to help protect everyone from the meteor the second timeline is the current timeline which follows the events of ff7 remake and rebirth in this world cloud and his companions defy fate and opened up new possibilities this led to the world being shattered into a Multiverse with multiple timelines happening concurrently which is what we'll be exploring during this final chapter and as we'll see Cloud manages to save arth's life and set up a completely different future than the one we experien in the original Final Fantasy 7 the third and final timeline is the doomed timeline which follows an alternate reality where Zach survived the attack outside midgar we've been explor exploring this timeline through small gameplay segments and cuts scenes throughout the course of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth in this world seepo successfully summoned the meteor which is set to destroy the planet any day now people have accepted that the world is going to end and are just trying to enjoy their final days before the world is destroyed Tifa Barrett Jesse and wedge are all dead but bigs is still alive cloud and aith are still alive too though cloud is sick with MAO poisoning after SEO cuts down cloud and ER the game cuts to the doomed timeline where Zach is still alive Zach is faced with a choice go to Shinra HQ and obtain a cure for Cloud's Maco poisoning or rush to sector 6 and save bigs who is about to bomb the reactor Zach decides to go to Shinra to save Cloud the game then cuts to aith waking Cloud up in her room at elmyra's house in midgar we are still in the doomed timeline where Zach is alive so this happens after Zach obtains a cure for cloud aith warns Cloud not to look up at the sky but of course we do look up and see not only is the plate above the Sector 5 slums gone but there's a gigantic tear in the sky this tear peers into a sort of astral plane or space between timelines which is where SEO is currently operating side note seo's ultimate goal here is to merge the disperate worlds together into a single timeline where he is Victorious and achieves godhood some context from the original Final Fantasy 7 that is not explicitly explored in the reboot games is why sepo wants to summon a meteor to begin with when the planet is damaged it summons a tremendous amount of energy to heal itself so seph's goal is to use magic to summon a meteor smash it into the planet and then harvest the planet's energy to become a God he was ultimately unsuccessful in the original timeline because cloud and his companions killed SEO before the meteor hit the planet so his new play is to go for this timeline merger and create a new timeline where he achieves his ultimate goal godhood aith and Cloud explore these Sector 5 markets picking out gifts and chatting the residents here have all resigned themselves to the fact that the world is about to end we briefly cut back to Zack at Shinra HQ saying just as much before rushing into a group of soldiers so he can get a cure for cloud searo quickly chimes in from the space in between taunting aith that he's found her so this is where you've been hiding in a world that has accepted its fate we once again cut back to Zack but this time he's decided to save bigs instead of cloud so it's another alternate version of the doomed timeline Zach arrives before bigs detonates the bomb which turns out to be a dud and Zach gives this huge speech about taking control of his life just before Shinra soldiers storm in and kill bigs Zach jumps off the railing to escape Shinra and this is the last time we'll explore this version of the doomed timeline aith ask Cloud to take her to her favorite place which is the church with the flower bed in the Sector 5 slums we quickly Fade to a scene of Zach sitting outside the church contemplating whether to save bigs cloud or aith searo appears in search of aith and hits Zack with the black Whispers pulling him into The Space Between Worlds we'll come back to Zach later the next scene is cloud and aith in the church we are still in the doomed timeline by the way aith explores her feelings for cloud before handing him the white materia and pushing him into The Space Between Worlds just as SEO is entering the church to kill her and now we've got to talk about the white Whispers we've been seeing them battling with the black Whispers at various points in the game so what are they we already know that searo controls the black Whispers but the white ones are controlled by the planet and since arith can commune with the planet as a cetra or ancient the white whispers are partly in her control we will fight a handful of white Whispers In The Forgotten Capital later on and if you use the assess Materia on them this is the description a unique Arbiter of Fate that opposes all who attempt to defy the inevitable intrinsically connected to the planet's Destiny across time and space when Zach was pulled into The Space Between Worlds we see white Whispers protecting him along with a petal from arth's favorite flower and after aith pushes Cloud into this realm as well well white Whispers protect him from seo's own fate ghosts the next scene is searo monologuing to Cloud about his plan to reunite the different worlds into one timeline which gives a new meaning to the term reunion that we saw in the original ff7 in the OG game reunion referred to the reuniting of Genova's body all of hojo's experiments and people who were injected with Genova's genetic material were compelled to reunite and made a pilgrimage to the Northern Crater where SEO was located but in ff7 rebirth reunion is talking about the merging of the various timelines into a single Universe where Sethro can achieve his ultimate goal of godhood seph tells Cloud that he gives him his Blessing before sending him back into one of the worlds we are dropped into the forest outside the Forgotten capital a place where Cloud chased aith in his dreams in the original Final Fantasy 7 Cloud Returns the white material which aith gave him and aith takes it absorbs its magical power and then Returns the depleted orb to Cloud before departing Cloud tries to pursue her but is held back by white Whispers before the screen Fades to White the scene then Cuts back to your full party in the current timeline after aith and Cloud were knocked down by seepo aith is okay but cloud is basically knocked unconscious Tifa and Barrett try to wake Cloud but he is unresponsive so Barrett carries him along the way aith says something to the group before going off on her own and at this point Cloud wakes up for real and we start chapter 14 after a brief walk through the forest we arrive in the Forgotten capital of the Ancients which is being swarmed by both black and white Whispers Cloud reconfirms that the black Whispers don't belong to fate or the planet but SEO speaking of which homeboy appears and celebrates the reunion of timelines after sephiroth does an Irish goodbye we are attacked by White Whispers which again are bound to the planet and currently detect us as a threat to the world's existence they only begin helping us when they realize we are allied with aith but before we can reach aith our path is blocked by seo's Whispers but when the group begins saying arth's name the white Whispers carve out a small path for cloud to slip through on his own soon Cloud arrives at the altar where aith is performing a prayer to Holy in the original ff7 holy was a powerful form of magic summoned by the white materia this magic was capable of eliminating all threats to the planet's existence like say a gigantic freaking meteor summoned by a lunatic when Cloud enters the alter platform puppet mode is re-engaged and he raises his own sword to attack aith this also happened in the original game but Tifa snapped him out of it before he could attack the cetra waiu and this is where we're going to do a bunch of timeline switching between the original game and the current world of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth sephar Roth drops down from the the sky with the intent to kill aith but Cloud hits him with that parod pay attention to the timeline switches throughout the following scene [Music] [Music] [Music] erth [Laughter] don't wait your tears are empty just like [Music] you Cloud it's [Music] okay [Music] harth I'll kill you Eric [Music] And So It Begins so in our current timeline of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth aith is safe for the moment but now we have to defeat sepo and goova lifebringer in a 12 phase boss fight these were some of SEO and Genova's final forms in the original game so I really wonder what Square Enix plans to do in part three after defeating goova lifebringer we trigger another cutscene and switch back to Zach remember how gets swept up by white Whispers at the end of chapter 13 well now he's safely in The Space Between Worlds where he approaches Cloud this triggers a fight where Zach and Cloud fight Sethro together after winning the battle you lose the cutscene and Zach gets yeed by the black Whispers just as worlds unite so too do they [Music] part Cloud save her Cloud now has to solo seph's ascended form if you use the assess Materia you can glean some lore about his motives separo reborn is a resurrected being who now wields unimaginable might and commands the Arbiters of Fate he seeks to pierce through the layers of existence and reunite fragmented space-time he shall rule over the planet and create eternity in this phase of the boss fight you will seo's body and cause him to plummet out of the astral plane into the current timeline where the rest of your party is still with aith who is now unconscious she is still alive though I guess she just had to take a nap after doing all that praying after this phase of the boss fight we return to Zach who is being carried through SpaceTime by black Whispers he lands in the flower bed of the Sector 5 church and gets healed presumably by a or the white Whispers unfortunately for Zach he's back in the doomed timeline where the meteor is about to destroy the planet but sephra reborn gets phas pushed into this timeline by Tifa and crew so now Zach has to fight him aith opens up a portal to the astral plane which allows Cloud to come through and perform Synergy attacks alongside Zach in this phase after Zack cripples another SEO reborn body part Sr gets tossed back to more phases with the rest of your crew but after SEO reborn is defeated seph lands back in The Space Between Worlds with Cloud which triggers the 12th and Final Phase of this fight aith joins your party as you fight the One-Winged Angel version of setho in a 2V1 battle after you kick his ass zephro Chuckles to himself and flies away white Whispers swarm into the space while cloud and aith hold hands and return to the current timeline the next scene shows Zach facing the end of the world world in the doomed timeline but just before the meteor hits he gets Swept Away by white Whispers And I'm going to skip ahead a little bit because in about 10 minutes of game time Zach awakes in the Sector 5 Church in the current timeline did I N I couldn't have dreamt that it all felt way too real just as worlds unite so too do they part but who's to say they can't unite again so hey maybe Zach will become a full playable character in part three I think just about anything is possible at this point but rolling back the clock just a bit right after Zach gets Swept Away by Whispers we cut back to the group rushing to arth's side in the planet sanctuary and we have more timelines switching between the original game and rebirths current timeline [Music] [Music] [Music] aith wake up [Music] we also see glimpses of the group at arth's grave site a dejected scene from the original timeline but we will quickly switch to the current time where aith is alive Tifa is also super depressed now because she got cucked by aith who steals cloud away from her mantifa really gets screwed in this timeline Tia fans like myself are in absolute shambles right now since they are essentially canonizing the AI the romance in the reboot series after this we get a few quick cutcenes from sepo Rufus and the one I already mentioned with Zack appearing in the current timeline before we shift to the final scene of the game this scene opens up with cloud and crew fixing up the tiny Bronco on a grassy Hill cloud is holding the depleted white material that aith handed to him back in the forest but interestingly when we change camera angles we see Cloud holding the black materal instead he eventually Pockets the empty white materia but notices something pulls it back up and realizes it's the black Materia that he has there are a couple ways to look at this we're either witnessing two separate timelines one where cloud has the white materia and one where he still held on to the black materal that or he has his hands on both I Le more towards the latter option but it's still up for debate at this point Sid has some banter with the crew while questioning what aith actually did to save the planet yui is depressed because her love is still dead and Tifa is sitting in the cuck chair sobbing her eyes out next to Red 13 man they really did tea dirty in this timeline after noticing the black Materia in his pocket Cloud puts it into his Buster sword and joins the rest of the group everyone starts boarding the tiny Bronco ready for the next adventure to pursue SEO onto the northern continent aith announces her plans to return to the Forgotten Capital to pray to the planet and stop the meteor Cloud promises aith that he will stop searo which is a nod to the promise to Tifa in the original game then the tiny Bronco flies off and the writers hit us with the text no promises await at Journey's End what the dude I'm wondering if cloud is actually going to enter his villain era in part three they definitely seem to be setting him up that way a little bit with the way he took the black Materia but who knows the plot is kind of off the rails at this point so anything is fair game I'll be real I have very mixed feelings about the ending of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth I've already come to terms with the fact that the story was going to be very different than the original and I suspected that they would keep aith alive this time around I mean why go to all that effort defeating the whisper King in part one and shackling the timeline if you're just going to kill her off again so I pretty much knew that aith would survive on the one hand I feel like they are just ruining the original story with all these changes but on the other hand I like characters like Zach and aith so keeping them alive is actually kind of cool in a fanservicey kind of way I've got a lot of issues with rebirth beyond the plot though and I definitely don't think it's anywhere near as good as the review scores are suggesting but I did enjoy piecing together
