TLDW: Sucker Punch was a message about the modern age rating system and how easily it accepted violence at low age rated films compared to sexual themes in its higher rated ones.

so there are a bunch of different theories about this film a couple that say the entire movie is pure fantasy well I think that's plausible for the sake of this video I'm going to be sticking mostly to what we're explicitly told through the narrative really hoping this doesn't come off as patronizing but the utter confusion over this movie confuses me either way studio logos open on a literal stage which is a pivotal part of baby doll story as well as a signal to the audience that number one we are an audience that is paid to see in there for our complicit in the creation of this film and number two what we're about to see is a theatrical performance in every sense everyone has an angel next day little girl but don't let appearances fool you they can be as fierce as any dragon the narrator sweet pea just identified baby doll as Regardie an angel pretty straightforward so far know also dragon shadowing this entire opening sequence is beautiful and tells a very clear story without any full sentences being uttered further evidence this is all fantasy is that any sounds made during the sequence fit seamlessly into the background track which is actually sung by our main protagonist emily browning katana shadowing what an awesome CG tracking transition shot and now we're given everything we need to know about baby doll we were told she's a guardian angel now we're shown that she is when she retrieves the gun we were shown earlier you already seen it once but man that's an original title card and it plays perfectly into the fantasy motif of this film we can deny our angels exist but they show up anyway at strange places again talking about baby doll literally as she's arriving at a strange place they can speak through any character we can imagine challenging us to fight in the theme of this movie is spelled out very clearly within the first five minutes fight fight back what an artistic way of showing us that baby doll is listening to their conversation by Framing half her face as part of the shot reverse shot little scenes like this are what make me really appreciate Snyder's attention to detail trapped in the asylum montage is the fastest way to a lobotomy the way I see it this quick montage is baby dolls first two days of the asylum she formulates her plan as she sees each of the items she'll need to escape then we cut to the day of her lobotomy right before the hammer makes contact we cut back to day three where she enters her fantasy it's my understanding that this fantasy actually plays out while the hammer is pulled back and then culminates with the high roller in the end I'm the star remember she's the star Snider flat-out tells us the ending really shouldn't be a surprise he's brought you here from the orphanage to lose your virginity right baby dolls translation of blues split second condescending remark to her stepdad father turns him into a literal father a priest in the brothel fantasy where her virginity a symbol of the lobotomy is given up through her brain literally being pierced by the orb attack last and yep I sure did have to look up what that was called the club's a front for his business favors II reviewing the inside of baby dolls mind and her projection of blue her stepfather paid $2,000 for her to be lobotomised so rocket reads that back to baby doll as blue doing special favors this performance was cut from the theatrical Snider was really trying to make the brothel feel more dangerous I think that was the right call but the sequence is amazing and the fact that he put this much work into it choreography rehearsals singing the gambling montage all of it just to cut it shows me the kind of director he is he cares man he cares two things here first is that's Emily Browning singing to herself further adding to the fantasy this film and second how talented is she her your Rhythmics cover in the beginning which let's be honest third was a perfect song to open the film with abuse streams it's almost like the movie was modeled after that song a girl pig if you're still doubt in the movie has a consistent and spelled out theme here are baby dolls first words spoken and they're in the service of further perpetuating her guardian angel status by saving rocket later on you'll see me slightly ignore a queen song because just no stop that leave Freddie Mercury long but Bjork is always away an army of me is another perfectly placed song for this film stand up direct response to madam gorski's call-to-action who everyone in the audience lost their ability to think critically the only way to interpret anything in film is literally right I'm sorry I don't need to be so condescending but this is baby dolls first escape into an escape to explain through visual feel or power over a current situation though fleeting that power is fun fact the entire story through representative images is etched onto her katana right down to the lobotomy talk about attention to detail it will be a deep sacrifice it will set you free we'll eventually learn that baby doll is the fifth thing and it's her sacrifice that will set her free free from guilt from pain it's morbid for sure lobotomy is hardly what I consider free but if you're about to be lobotomised I can see spinning it this way in your head it's kind of like she's incepting herself yeah ten foot tall samurai is a win the Japanophile inside me wouldn't let that go Alabama I may have chuckled the first time I saw this because holy escalation from this very grounded sombre movie but it fits perfectly with this fantasy level and the thrashing metal music is awesomely appropriate and it wouldn't be a Snider flick if we didn't get sweet slow-mo shots like these yep so metal one thing you may notice about this movie is a lack of blood and any fight scenes I assume it's partly to maintain that pg-13 rating but these Samurai all bleeding light like light at the end of the tunnel as in freedom I don't know maybe it's just me say what you will about Snyder he knows how to frame a shot more fun little details you may not have noticed this conversation actually starts inside the mirror we pan around through the mirror from an impossible location we can collect all four of these items can be free again some very plain foreshadowing she doesn't say escape she says be free because deep down her mind already knows the outcome all the transitions to the fantasy levels are great but this one won't be my personal favorite as the edge of the studio blends into sandbags white rabbit is ultimately about drug use but hallucinations and the ever building crescendo of the song are such great choices for our second fantasy sequence uh it's so meta my brain hurts Scott Glenn taking partner right stuff here a walk so awesome Scott Glenn was in the right stuff for those confused and they pretty much invented this badass good girls as you can imagine this comes up a lot so here's a quick badass moments montage I want one again Schneider sneaks in insane Tarantino style Gore by replacing blood with Steve I mean this movie with just about the nc-17 if these guys weren't filled with steam bullet deflecting is always a win just about the coolest way to save your friend yet no part with your loosens when they are gone but you will cease to live even Madame Gorski thinks the fantasy fight sequences are a good idea fine Queen is always a win or a drag and shadowing on the lighter what's great about this sequence in particular is that it feels like the girls are dropped out of space-time and both reality into a pre-existing an ongoing conflict those are some masterful superhero landings Wade would definitely have applauded them once more Green Miss gets past the MPAA when red Miss wouldn't have the way the girls interact with each other gives us the distinct sense they've been doing this for years workable grip at all yeah dragon chasing a bomber and then taking a bite out of said brahmer is pretty great slow-mo potato pot drop might feel superfluous but the water spilling is actually pivotal to the outcome of the scene of all the fantasy sequences this might be my least favorite but it's almost like Snyder knew we'd be a little fantasy doubt by now so we added something a little new by making this battle scene entirely one take from the second the doors open there are no visible cuts obviously blending CG with physical footage is kind of a hybrid long take but the choreography and timing is all very well executed even when we go outside the Train it still comes back in the other side is one continuous shot but even without the long take this scene is awesome this is the only time the fantasy world actually blends with the brothel level and the proximity warning for the water touching the wire translating to the bombs proximity to the city is excellent don't get bad self-sacrifice awesome explosion no knife on the ground if we feel like I'm this little boy sitting in the corner of the sandbox while everybody gets to play with my toys creepy creepy honesty did you lose your fight huh to me I'm saying you go self-sacrifice with upbeat music nonetheless she has finally set free through this sacrifice and accepting her fate so moving just in case there's any confusion that this is a metaphor for her lobotomy the women attending her are the same actresses as the nurses and this is the same window behind her in the lobotomy room and the same one behind Sweet Pea on stage Jon Han explains this entire movie for us right here very articulately he is our only way out the only freedom she can truly get because no matter where she runs she can never escape what she did to her sister only inside her mind can she truly be free just like that we see all the things he described wash away and baby doll is free no matter how much blue wishes her back finally just a sliver of comeuppance hopefully not just for blue but also The Stepfather with the wise man and the kid showing up again at the end it's hard to believe anything other than this being baby dolls fantasy of sweet peas escape but that doesn't mean she didn't actually escape also doesn't mean she's even real at all you have all the weapons you need now fight come on you all got chills Abed epic closing before I get down to the nitty-gritty I just have to praise this film one more time for the stunning visuals the asylum was sufficiently grimy gray in claustrophobic the brothel was bright and colorful but still had an uneasy feeling that something was off and each fantasy sequence dripped with style and music that push it to the next level the feel of each level was unique and beautiful in its own way I thought that all the performances were solid and everyone immersed me into this world especially Oscar Isaac is our villain blue okay on to the gritty nitty the general consensus on sucker punch from those that didn't immediately hate it is that it's a statement against male oppression the patriarchy and the objectification of women and there are a number of ways that it accomplishes that the most basic is explained by the fact that this scene had to be cut in order to get a pg-13 rating it contains no nudity or sexual content just the implication of such things and every scene we were about to see baby doll objectified before she starts dancing we immediately cut to a fantasy world with hyper stylized action in uber violence that's completely acceptable within a pg-13 rating however insinuate sex and all of a sudden its are personally I believe this film is snider statement about our culture's acceptance of the glorification of violence compared to the sexual ization of when but that's just my theory much like inception the movie created a whole bunch of theorists some of my favorites are that baby doll is named baby doll because she's like a toy that children we the audience project their imaginations onto and each of the girls are a facet of her psyche rocket is immaturity and recklessness blondie is fear sweet pea is strength and level-headedness amber is loyalty etc they may exist in the asylum level but she likely never really interacts with them another good one is that this is all just sweet peace coping mechanism for her lobotomy in the death of her sister in real life baby doll is just her physical embodiment that she sacrifices so that her mind can be free personally I think that while Sweet Pea is the main focus of the film baby doll is real she did free Sweet Pea and the unfolding of her plan and the collection of items is just the way she's spectacular eise's being lobotomized everything that we see in the brothel level is her way of accepting her fate welcoming it even so she can be free but does any of that really matter were we all so confused by this story taking this film for what it is on the surface each fantasy level is baby dolls mental escape from what's actually happening in the asylum it can be that simple and when reviewers start questioning what's actually going on when the characters are talking to each other in the third level of fantasy goodness gracious are we missing the point the final level of fantasy is more about the emotional response and metaphorical fight that is the dance one level down a potential abuse and/or rape in the asylum it's a metaphor for the women taking back control by doing what Madame Gorski says are we so thick-headed that we need to take everything so literally or deep down are we afraid what this film is really saying reminding us that women are abused what's that the asylum was placed in the 50s and 60s do you think Snyder's travel through time in the fantasy levels from World War one on to future looking robots was just a coincidence I'm not about making grandiose political or socio-cultural statements and I don't have an agenda if you didn't like this movie that's fine just ask yourself why I know it felt uncomfortable there's no respite for baby doll other than her escape into paradise the sad truth is that while this movie is about fighting back against the oppression of women it also recognizes that nothing this movie says or does can really change it notice that not one human man dies throughout the entire film to come close baby doll spares them both plenty of females die including a dragon and it was a poignant statement women are usually fairly safe in film but he straight-up murders two right in a row this movie has so much going on I feel like I still haven't uncovered everything but I hope that I at least opened up the possibility to some of you that this is not just a mindless style over substance Snyder self-worship vest what it is is a male director making some strong feminist statements did he do it perfectly obviously not since so many of us missed the point but sometimes the narrative doesn't spoon-feed the themes and messages of a movie and I hope I did you diehard fans who are moved by this film some justice but really everyone just go watch it again or maybe it's just a movie about badass chick slicing up robots slaying dragons and mowing down zombies and really blue is the main character and it was all--just poe dameron's demented fantasy boom Star Wars she's been a joy
