today we're going to talk about etsy keyword research using e-rank e-rank does a lot much more than keyword research which is why i love love love this tool but today we're going to be focusing on keyword research tools inside of e-rank when it comes to etsy keyword research i find that the problem most makers have is that they don't have an organized workflow or system to find the best keywords if this sounds like you this video is definitely going to help without a system you often end up with like a billion tabs open on your browser with keywords all over the place in e-rank scribbled on a notepad maybe on a spreadsheet too but there's no clear system to know what to do with all of it so today i'll share with you the three-step workflow i use to do keyword research using e-rank as efficiently as possible and as i do that i'll also show you my favorite e-rank features for each step of the workflow ready let's dive in [Music] bonjour my name is deb and i'm the founder of desert taco a membership community for makers and handmade shop owners just like your fabulous self you can learn more about our amazing community tis at hq by the link below this video but for now let's jump straight into today's conversation finding the best etsy keywords using e-rank so before we jump into e-rank let's talk a little about what the three steps of the workflow are brainstorm research and scoring in brainstorm you generate as many keyword ideas as possible for the product you're doing seo for then your research check those brainstorm ideas against actual data from etsy and find new ideas that you didn't think of yourself during the brainstorming step last comes scoring where you decide which keywords from your final research list you will use in your listing by scoring your keywords let's go through each one in detail and talk about how earring tools can help you do them step 1 brainstorm brainstorm should start away from earring now we are going to dive into earring to find even more ideas in the research phase which is step two but brainstorming starts outside of the tool and should be a brain dump of your ideas good and bad ones two common problems i see makers run into when they are brainstorming keywords one not enough ideas and i think we can all relate to this because we can find it hard to think outside of the box outside of how we have been thinking about our product it can be pretty difficult to find another way to say candle or blanket right if you've been calling it blanket for so many years and you're like what is another word for a blanket right so that's the first thing not enough ideas to get past this hurdle you need an effective brainstorming system that will prompt you so you can generate more ideas more easily if you're an hq member lucky you head over to the etsy seo blueprint course inside your course library where we have a full system for this with a keyword uh brainstorm spreadsheet workbook and more if you're not an hq member i will leave a link to the course below so you can learn more about it and join us if you'd like idea filtering is the other problem i commonly see we start filtering our ideas as we think of them don't do it during your brainstorm you should generate so many ideas that the majority of them will be bad ones and that's okay if you haven't generated a single bad keyword idea during your brainstorm you haven't done it properly now this sounds weird but it's because to get more good ideas you have to be okay with your brain suggesting bad ones too filtering happens because our brains can't help but analyze the ideas that we're having so we're trying to brainstorm but we're also already half into analysis mode and that's not effective so try as much as you can to let all flow a real brain jump on paper without judgment as to whether this keyword idea that you just had is good or bad another subconscious thing at play here is that deep down you know that when you're writing ideas on paper or in a spreadsheet you will eventually need to type them into your keyword research tool to check the data for it so what happens well since it's not the funnest part of the process we start to think you know no one will use this keyword anyway and we get rid of it while still in the brainstorming process without even bringing this idea to the next step which is research but you really never know some of those keywords that you're generating and think are great might turn out to be not so good as if no one is actually searching for them on etsy and others you think are not worth investigating might actually turn out to be great for your listing and this is where tool number one inside of e-rank comes in it's the bulk keyword tool let's jump in the app together to take a look okay so here we are inside of e-rank and as i was saying in previously in the video we're really only going to look at the keyword tools some of those keyword tools mostly today so if it's the first time that you're opening up a rank and you're like oh my god there's stuff everywhere yes and that's why i love love love earrings there's so much more than keyword research you can do but really today we're going to focus on our keyword research workflow and most of the tools we're going to be using are going to be under tools and then those uh keyword tools just done here and don't worry you don't need to know you know everything about the software the first time you use it and you might never actually use all of the features that they have so it's important that when you log into e-rank you go in knowing exactly what it is that you want to get done so that you can find the feature that's going to help you do that that's a big part of having a really systematized organized workflow so that you don't waste time and you work efficiently so i was just saying we are in our brainstorm step at this point right we just did a big brainstorm either in a spreadsheet on your notepad and a piece of paper it doesn't really matter we didn't filter our ideas so we should have a huge list of keyword ideas that we want to put into e-rank now really it's important that that brainstorm step contains just all the ideas that came out of your brain even if they're not good and this is why i love erank because usually most the other tools out there actually i think all the other tools out there i might be wrong and if i am let me know in the comments but for all i know erank is the only one that really allows you to import your keyword in bulk into the software what you usually have to do if you didn't have this feature is that you would take your keyword ideas list so i've got one here on the right side so imagine this is what i came up with during my brainstorm now just a quick note here you should have many more ideas than that uh in the csu blueprint if you have that you should come up with around you know i think in the examples that we share in the course we have around 80 ideas or something like that so you should have really a lot more but i kept it really simple for this video just so we can uh have a look quickly at how how the workflow works so this would be your brainstorm ideas list this is the ideas that you came up with on paper and essentially if you didn't have the bulk keyword tool you would need to take those one by one and for each go under your keyword tool and type it in and then look at the data for this keyword does it have competition does it have searches does it have a good engagement rate and all of that and so it can be pretty slow and quite annoying to be honest when you have to do that you know 50 times for each keyword so it's not the funnest part of the process but with e-rank you can actually go into bulk keyword tool right here i absolutely love love love this tool and depending on the plan that you're on you are going to have a different quarter i believe i'm on the highest plan so i have 50 encoder here i think if you're in the lower plan which is i believe six dollar a month at least it is uh in australia at the moment that's where i am and also at the time i'm recording this video but it's really affordable and absolutely worth it just even for that one feature and you'll get much more than this one feature when you get to a pay plan and so what it does is it allows you to enter 20 search term at a time one keyword per line so if you have a quarter of 50 it's actually 50 times 20 keyword if you have a quota of 25 it's actually 25 times 20 keywords so this is uh this is a lot you can really just really quickly essentially copy your list of ideas that you got from your brainstorm and paste it in there instead of going and individually looking them up and then i'm just going to click on search and boom all the keywords that i had from my brainstorm i can now see in a table with all the data directly from etsy here is the next step and this is very important this is where your brain is going to look at this and want to analyze all the data at the same time so you're going to look at this and go okay some are green there's a bit of orange there's some yellow there how do i know which one i should look up a little bit more in depth um do i look at the google searches like your brain is going to try and make sense of all of it at once and you have to remember that we're not quite there yet at the moment what we're doing is we're taking all of our brainstorm ideas and essentially eliminating the ones that really are not going to make the cut so i want you to forget in this first phase of the workflow about everything on this table except the average searches why because if a keyword is not being searched at all i'm not even going to bother really doing any more investigation here so this is this is the one that i was saying are bad ideas this is the one in your brainstorm that you're gonna put into erank and go huh yeah that's not a really good keyword and some of them are going to be surprisingly not good and you might think oh i really thought this was going to be a good keyword and it's not and then you might have some good surprises the other way where you'll enter a keyword and it'll be a really good keyword where you didn't think it would be so that's why you don't filter those ideas between you know when you do your brainstorm so that you let the data tell you so here what i'm going to do is that i'm going to look i just ordered here by average search so that i can just focus on this one column here and i'm only going to to keep the ones that have some sort of amount of searches every month i'm not analyzing anything yet i'm not overthinking i'm not going oh it's 180 enough is one you know it's 270 enough i'm just going look these have under a hundred this is under 200 it's really not a lot but for now i'm i'm just gonna keep it this doesn't mean i'm going to use it in my listing it just means that for now i'm i'm interested to take it to the next step which is research right so uh how do you do that you're gonna click down here in this little corner um this is your keyword list and i'm to create a new one so you can click on new list here and we're going to call this one um chunky blanket because that's how i'm thinking about the product that i'm using as an example here uh chunky blanket okay and then you can close this it will read chunky blanket uh when you're in the right list here and so that means that every time i go and click on this little star it will add this keyword to this keyword list that we just created you can see it says 1 out of 50 your keyword list has a maximum of 50 keyword per list so i'm going to add this one this one this one this one and this one just because they have some amount of search so i've got six keywords already on my keyword list so that's that's what you do at first you don't go and start clicking on each of those you don't go and start analyzing everything you do this with your bulk keyword tool for as many keywords as you have from your brainstorm step and you start adding things to that keyword list that you're then going to go into step two with and that's what i'm going to show you now okay so once you've done your brainstorm and you've used the bulk keyword tool to one eliminate the keywords that had no searches or very low searches and two to keep those that did you're ready for step two which is keyword research so now you're going to check your ideas from the brainstorm step against actual data from etsy and find new ideas that you didn't think of yourself and that's where the e-rank keyword tool comes into play along with what i call my two tabs rule which will save you from overwhelm and keep you super organized and efficient let me show you okay so back inside of e-rank and actually let me make this we don't really need this list anymore so i'm just going to make this a bit wider for us and what we want to do here is step two which is our research so a quick reminder step one was taking your brain store making it a really um you know big in-depth brainstorm and taking all these ideas the good and the bad and going through the bulk keyword tool which was under here to essentially keep the best one and let go of the one that didn't work out so now what you have is the beginning of a keyword list with a few ideas that you got from your brainstorm and now worth investigating so what we're going to do is we're going to use these ideas that you took from the brainstorming that we kept because the data seemed to say hey there's some searches there and we're going to use that to generate even more ideas for keywords because even the best of brainstorm won't give you all the keywords you're always going to not think about a few it's really hard to come up with you know keywords that people are actually typing in search and that's where a tool like here rank is really helpful because they can tell you this so what we're going to do is click on under tools you're going to go to keyword lists and you're going to find a list that you just created in this step before so the one we created together was called chunky blanket so i'm going to click on it and here we have the few keywords that we had saved together from the bulk keyword tool now if you click on any of these blue links or if you click on any of those keywords you're going to open up a new tab in your browser that will load for you what's called the keyword tool and it will already have uh as an input the keyword that you just clicked on so in this case it was blanket so this is really the same thing as if you had gone under tools here and then clicked on keyword tool and then manually typed in blanket it's just a faster way to go at it because you have your beginning of a keyword list here so you're just clicking on the keyword and then it automatically loads it into the keyword tool for you in a new tab so that's really handy and the keyword tool is awesome now there is so much info and data in there and this is another step of the process where you will need to refrain from getting too excited because your brain is going to look at all the data that you can see and i love that this data is there and there is definitely a time to look at this data in detail to decide if this keyword is good or not but at the moment remember we're not trying to score keyword we're not trying to decide if the keyword blanket is good or not we're still in step two research right which means we're just looking for new ideas and to generate new keyword ideas so we're not gonna look at all of this and we're gonna avoid having shiny click syndrome where everything is interesting and we want to click on everything and i know because this is what my brain wants to do too and i know that many of you will feel the same and want to click on everything and what we're going to do instead is go under keyword ideas here and you have uh three options here you have popular tags related searches or both and for this step i recommend you go under related searches why because what i'm really interested in as i'm doing step two research is find some more ideas of what people are actually typing in search on etsy and what this gives me are related searches to the keyword blanket so when people type in blanket on etsy what else are they also typing and searching on etsy so what i'm doing here is setting it to related searches and then it will give me a list of related searches for the word blanket for the keyword blanket so what i recommend you do again is do not click on any of these blue links this is where you get into overwhelm so this is where the two tabs rule comes into play as you can see on my screen here in my browser i only have two tabs open one is my keyword list the other is the keyword tool for that keyword i clicked on which was blanket i'm not gonna go and click on anything else because if i did i would have more than two tabs open and this is when the the you you get into suddenly you have 53 tabs open each for a single keyword and you don't know how to regather all this data and make sense of it and this this is when your workflow becomes really inefficient so what we're doing here is simply looking for more ideas so again we're not trying to over analyze any of the data that we see here this is what you'll do in step three which will be scoring your keywords for now we're just looking for good ideas so what i'm looking at is keywords that have some amount of searches again i'm not obsessing over the rest of the stat for now i'm just making sure that there's at least some searches and it needs to obviously be relevant for my product so what i do is i go through this list i'll just scroll and when i find something that i'm thinking hey this is a keyword that you know is relevant for my product i will star it to add it to my list so my star comfy blanket crochet i'm not going to click on because my one is not necessarily crochet needed blanket i'm going to click on and so you just go down the list and essentially star all the keywords that are a potential idea that you'd like to investigate further and that's all you're doing you're not clicking on those you're not clicking on anything actually you just go down the list start the one that have some amount of searches and they're relevant to your products and when you are done you close this one tab and you go back to your keyword list and you click on the second one and we're going to do that again for the second one we're not looking at all the really tempting data everywhere we're going down to keyword ideas and we just repeat this process you're gonna click on related searches this is taking a little time sorry my internet must be a little slow and uh we're again going to go down this list here so you relate to the searches and again look at keywords that are that could work for my product and in this case there isn't really many that even have a lot of searches so this one is going to be pretty quick for me because i'm going to look in chunky yeah blanket that doesn't really work for my product chunky neat throw blanket maybe again i'm not over analyzing it's not looking fantastic but i'm still going to keep it because it's relevant for my product and there's some searches for it super chunky blanket that might work and the rest um i might not be interested in so that's all i'm doing and then i'm out and then i go down to my third one and i do the same thing again what this does if i refresh my list now i'm just gonna refresh this page is that it adds all these new ideas that i found to my current list so you can see we started with five and then now we've added a few more here so once you've done that for your entire list you will have generated more ideas based on actual data that eran gives you from itsy searches and from what shoppers are actually looking for in the app and so you have your list ready to take into step three which is when we actually start looking at all the data to do the scoring okay so now you've got a keyword list full of ideas that you can consider for your listing you're ready for the last step which is step three scoring and for this you're going to use the keyword list and flagging system tool let's jump back into the app and see just what this tool does okay so back into e-rank one last time for this video for step three which is scoring so what we've done in the two previous step which was uh brainstorm and in research is keep things really focused on either brainstorming or researching and now we're finally able to start analyzing that and really comparing our keywords to decide okay this one is a good one i'm going to keep it this one is great it's going to be my focus keyword for this listing these ones i'm not going to use and maybe some that you're thinking i'm not going to use for now but i want to keep them there in case i'm interested in using them at a different time of the year for example so to do that you're going to go into tools and you're going to find your keyword list that you've been building during the two previous step i'm going to click on keyword list find mine which was chunky blanket and i only have nine keywords in mind uh in in mine sorry because i have been uh well it's just a short kind of tutorial i'm doing for you right now but obviously if i had done uh the brainstorm and the research phase properly i would actually have a lot more uh keyword in in my keyword list here and um if you need help really uh deciding how to score your uh keywords please check out the cseo blueprint below i will leave a link if you're already an hq member you have access to it already in your library so make sure to go and check it i believe it's under module 3 that we do this because it really deserves a deep dive on its own so what i want to do in this video instead is really focus on the workflow this is what this video is about and show you what's available in this keyword list tool to help you score your keyword so essentially the main feature is flags here which i love love love because this saves me and you um using a spreadsheet to record all of your keyword ideas and then color code all of them and then i don't know i mean i love spreadsheet but i love this even more because it's simple i've been able to add to this list really simply in my first two steps using the you know little starring system and now i've got all of them here and i can simply color code them by clicking on those little dots here and decide hey this is going to be green this is going to be red this is going to be yellow um i'm saying this completely randomly by the way guys i haven't even started looking at the data i'm just showing you how it works so that i can decide okay this is a good keyword this one is not good etc etc i'm just gonna remove that for now and so this is essentially why i love the keyword list tool and this flagging system because it keeps me away from my spreadsheet everything is inside of e-rank it's saved in there i can go back to it anytime i want i've got all the data attached to it for each of those keywords i can get even more information by clicking on them and opening as we've done previously the keyword tool except this time i might be interested in looking at a lot more information there that we have in the research phase because in the research phase we didn't want to be distracted we had a two tabs max rule but now that we're scoring keyword it's really interesting to have uh within my keyword at least just one click away all this information about this specific keyword right so that's really why i love this keyword list and of course you have access to all the e-rank information in there which means that we have not only the the level of searches every month for each keyword and the level of competition but we'll also get um two different uh data point here for what really is the engagement so people searching for blanket how often are they actually clicking on what they see on the screen and here we have the average click-through rate is 48 and because we have quite a high average uh searches that means that on average there's 10 000 clicks for this for this keyword right and so it's very important because sometimes uh you might have a keyword that has for example let's look at this white hand kneaded blanket it doesn't have a lot of searches right uh 180 is not a lot but it's got a 100 click-through rate meaning that it's very uh specific a long-tail keyword people who search for hand-knitted blanket click on what they see in the results so it's it's a it's really actually not a bad keyword even though it doesn't have a lot of search uh per month and so 100 in click-through rate here means that we have the same average clicks that we have in average searches right so that's why i love that we have those two numbers here to allow us to compare the engagement essentially of your keyword so um love love this love that we have those two data points for uh clicks of course we have your long tail keyword here to help you see if a keyword is long tail or not and then we have the trend graph and i think that's a very important element as well that's often forgotten because it gives you a really important element of context as to how consistently this keyword is being searched for during the year sometimes you'll have a keyword that looks sort of good because it has a lot of searches or a decent amount of searches decent amount of engagement and so you're thinking hey this is pretty good but it might just be that it was just you know a very strong couple of months over the year where it was searched a lot and then nothing really happened and look there's nothing really wrong per se with those keywords it's just that if you build a strategy for keyword listing where all of your keywords are very inconsistent through the year like this one for example comfy blanket it's not going to look good when you're into those months where there's actually no searches so it's a matter of really mixing your keywords so that if you have a couple of keywords like this that you want to play with because you're thinking hey um you know i'm i'm interested in this keyword even though it's not completely consistent you know to have also more consistently searched keyword in that listing and so your keyword mix is a bit more balanced so that's a really important uh piece of information that you get here in your trend graph and then finally and again um that's why i'm obsessed with this keyword at least is because when you have a spreadsheet right instead of using something like the keyword list in earring and you want more information about that keyword you have to open the software type in this keyword and look at data here everything is linked so i can click on blanket here to get more information and it opens straight away so it's very convenient and it's much faster will save you a lot of time so here let's click on analyze for serp analysis which i think is search engine result page something like this search engine results page yes that's right and so if you click on this it will open the keyword tool for you again and you will be able to see not only the information you already had in your table so i researches average clicks ctr and competition but also search trend uh on etsy and on other platforms so you can remove the one that you're not interested in and keep the one that you are interested in and it also gives you an idea of um how consistent a keyword is through the year not just on etsy but across the internet so if you're going to be marketing on pinterest it's interesting to look at it um if you're going to be trying to rank on google as well and of course if you sell on amazon and ebay those options are there so um i'm not going to dive a lot deeper into that because i could talk for another three hours easily but i just wanted to show you the process and how essentially within your keyword list for your step three scoring what you're going to end up doing is keeping it all into this keyword list by using the flagging system uh looking at all these different pieces of information that e-rank gives you so now you have it your three-step e-rank keyword research workflow to keep your research organized one brainstorm ideas and put them into the bulk keyword tool two research using the keyword tool and related searches feature and finally scoring with the flagging system and the keyword list if you'd like a deep dive into each of these three steps make sure to check the etsy seo blueprint course below if you're an hq member you already have access to it from your course library if you're not it's worth joining us a million times over if you found this video useful then you will absolutely love this course and what the membership has to offer in it you'll get our full brainstorming system our complete earring tutorial collection and my full scoring system which shows you how to find what i call unicorn keywords and get rid of the dead weight keywords that won't serve your listing and most importantly i'll show you what to do with all the rest of the keywords all those keywords that are kind of in the middle right there aren't too good like unicorn keywords but they aren't too bad either because that's really where the majority of your keywords are going to be and i'll show you how to properly assess them individually to decide which ones stay and which ones don't all this is waiting for you in the csu blueprint course and actually much more than that it includes a full module on how to tune up your etsy shop to turn more views into sales for example so make sure to check it out below the link is right below there thanks for watching and until next time i hope you're enjoying my voice warm-ups anyway insert screen recording about the bulk keyword tool insert screen recording insert screen recording
