[Music] [Music] hi this is joseph join us in cardinal cheeto every sunday on critics pose on [Music] [Music] friends greetings of joy and peace i trust that you are well please continue exposing the world with us every sunday subscribe to justcommtv then watch and share the word exposed on your feed thank you [Music] [Music] you are watching the word exposed let us behold jesus the word incarnate revealing himself to us in the sunday readings we are on the sixth sunday in ordinary time and in today's gospel we shall hear the beginning of jesus sermon on the plane this is saint luke's version of the beatitudes the poor will inherit god's kingdom the hungry will be satisfied those who are weeping will laugh those who are persecuted on account of the son of man will receive a great reward in heaven how blessed are they but woe to the rich now because they already received their consolation those who are filled now will go hungry those who laugh now will grieve and weep woe to those who are spoken well of now because that's how false prophets were treated the beatitudes confront us with a question in what or in whom do you put your trust we hope to be blessed to be happy in god [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength and flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in the lava waste a salt and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] are they who hope in the lord blessed are they who hope in the lord [Music] blessed the man who follows not the council of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the lord and meditates on his lord day and night blessed are they who hope in the lord blessed are they who open the lord he is like a tree planted near running water that heals his fruit and juices and who sleeps never face whatever he does [Music] they are like traffic which the wind drives away for the lord watches over the way of the just [Music] [Music] blessed are they who open the lord [Music] blessed are the they blessed are they [Music] [Music] a reading from the first letter of paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is vain you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord the source of eternal blessings i think it is part of human existence to long for blessings for good things in life but then we have to ask where where can we find that or better still from whom will we get lasting or eternal blessings in the first reading from the prophet jeremiah we have a contrast between two types of trust this is important for understanding the source of blessings whom do you trust in whom do you put your trust to give you blessings especially lasting eternal blessings jeremiah presents to us a person who may be truly blessed according to the norms of the world but according to jeremiah if a person is blessed in this world because he or she puts his or her trust in mere human beings then that person is not really blessed but even cursed because there is this pseudo or false blessing underneath there is really barrenness emptiness there is no life because the trust is placed on mere mortals and mere mortals are passing now they are here next time they are not here and the blessing that they can give to us is fleeting it will not last so if we trust only human beings for life's blessings we will be according to jeremiah really frustrated then he goes to another type of person the person who trusts in god now jeremiah is very realistic trusting in god does not mean the end of problems and difficulties there will be drought there will be moments of dryness there will be moments of challenges but if the person trusts in god there will be stability there will be a steady source of life of light and of hope and that is true blessing so we can see that the crucial point is are we putting our trust for blessings in someone who is fleeting or temporary or are we putting our trust in someone who is eternal and therefore who could sustain us in good times and in bad and who can guarantee to us blessings that are beyond this world in the second reading saint paul tells the corinthians who were known for their wisdom their intelligence their probing minds some of them questioned the resurrection from the dead he said well our human wisdom does not seem to establish that that is true now saint paul tells them if there is no resurrection from the dead then jesus also did not rise from the dead and if jesus did not rise from the dead into eternal life then our faith is useless then our faith is reduced again to matters only of this life and nothing beyond it if we question god's capacity to raise the dead to life and to guarantee eternal life then we are truly doomed we are truly cursed for our hope is only on this life and nothing more and nothing beyond it and so in the midst of that saint paul proclaims the good news that jesus is truly risen and because he's truly risen he is in the eternal presence of the lord of the father then our hope is an eternal life in lasting blessing which of course will have an impact on life on this earth and we believe begins on this earth but it is not confined to the fleeting and temporary conditions of life on earth my dear brothers and sisters the resurrection of jesus reminds us that we have a god who is eternal and who can promise to us and who can lead us into eternal blessing as seen in jesus resurrection so if we bring these two readings together let our eyes and our minds and our hearts be focused on stability all of us are looking for stability but who can provide stability the stability that we call eternal life eternal blessing only the stable and eternal one god so do not put your trust on fleeting and temporary events and human beings [Music] the proclamation of the holy gospel according to luke jesus came down with a 12 and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and sidon and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way the gospel of the lord [Music] the source of eternal blessings all of us are looking for a stable life we want the good things in life to last and that is part of our many people say part of our drive towards immortality but then we are also tempted to put our trust only in fleeting human beings and events this is what the prophet jeremiah considers a curse if you put your trust for blessings only on human beings then we are in for despair those things will not last only those who trust in the lord will find stability even in the midst of the challenges of life then saint paul in his first letter to the corinthians reminds us that if jesus did not rise from the dead then we don't have any hope beyond this world but with jesus rising from the dead there is now hope for eternal bliss eternal joy and so those who say there is no resurrection of the dead then they are confined only to this world to this history through this time and there is nothing beyond it and that is not true blessing in the gospel for today from saint luke we hear his version of the beatitudes again we have the first part filled with blessings and the second part with woes but we want to approach it from the fundamental question that we raised at the beginning who is the source not only of blessings but of lasting and eternal blessings blessing that will last even beyond our life here on earth jesus is addressing his disciples everyone is being addressed including us we who are in search of true blessing especially as we face endless insecurities uncertainties because of the pandemic because of the threats of war because of the never ending trafficking in human persons new forms of slavery the discrimination the refugee problems where can we find stability where can we find true blessing not only for ourselves but for the poor here jesus has something to say the poor are blessed the hungry are blessed those who weep and mourn are blessed and those who are insulted persecuted on account of the name of the lord are all blessed not because they are better human beings not because their condition of poverty of hunger of insult is the situation that we all long for myself and for other people know they are blessed because god sees their condition and for them who have been deprived of worldly blessings god has something in store for them they are blessed because of what god will do for them it is god who will reign over them it is god who will fill them it is god who will give them lasting joy it is god who will reward them after all their persecution here on earth it is god nobody else nobody else will bless the poor the hungry the persecuted only god and not in a fleeting manner but as a reward for eternity and so the poor the hungry the insulted are invited trust in god god sees you god loves you and god is the source of the blessings that you long for now the warning to the rich rich now those who are full now and filled now those who are praised now and who cling to the now to the blessings of the riches now who cling to the adulation now who cling to the security provided now by their wealth and thereby their position they are cursed they according to jesus because now they are fixed now and they don't open themselves to what comes in the future but wealth is passing adulation is passing a good name is passing so will blessing pass trust in the lord and you will find lasting joy and blessing your wealth will not provide it for your wealth is here but will be gone your good name all the praises are here now but will be gone but god alone endures forever this is a mystery to us i've heard many people who come for example to the philippines or who visit the refugees or uh very poor communities in different parts of the world and they are always amazed in the midst of the misery many of them especially the children exhibit true joy sincere joy during the typhoon yolanda haiyan here in the philippines many people ask the question how come those who have lost their properties their even their loved ones they could still smile they could sing [Music] and they could share whatever they have they are blessed because as many of them say god is merciful god is the source of lasting blessings the word has been exposed let us now fulfill it [Music] [Music] we continue today our series on jesus's healing ministry in our previous episodes in the experience of the man born blind we highlighted the truth that jesus could heal because he is from god we also noted in the experience of the paralytic who was helped by his friends that grace multiplies when people come together to help a sick friend and last week we stressed the proper response to the grace of jesus's healing gratitude today let us recall the familiar story of a man with a hearing and speech defect when jesus was in the decapolis people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him jesus took the man away from the crowd and put his finger in the man's ears and spitting touched his tongue and then he looked up to heaven here we see three important points jesus did not heal people for fame it was for the cure and consolation of the sick themselves and not to show off or impress the spectators jesus touched the sick how else could he express his closeness and solidarity to a fellow human being who was suffering he identified with them he risked being made impure by their sickness and sin as was the prevailing belief at the time lastly jesus looked up to heaven because he knew and recognized that it was his communion with the father that would make the healing possible these three points led to his powerful utterance be opened and the man's ears were opened and his speech impediment was gone this was another sign of the closeness of god through the promised messiah but why did jesus say effattah to pope francis it was not only a healing moment but also a teaching moment [Music] do jesus opened himself to the need for healing of the deaf man who had the speech impediment jesus's openness opened the man's ears and loosened his tongue the man can hear again and the first thing he heard ephatha be opened it was gospel good news your ears have now been opened it's your turn to open yourselves to others who need your help lord open our senses that we may open ourselves to others who need our closeness and assistance amen we have prepared reflection points for you please share them with your companions the first point is what blessings are we looking for [Music] the second point is whom do we trust to give us blessings
