so this week we are in the melting desert of las vegas we're gonna go check out a very cool recording studio which is kevin churko's studio the hideout las vegas [Music] [Applause] [Music] so if you're unfamiliar with kevin churko he is a producer and engineer and a songwriter kevin has received a ton of awards including juno's grammys dove awards for ozzy osbourne in this moment simon collins five finger death punch so kevin has also engineered records ranging from slash to shania twain to ringo starr robert downey jr patricia conroy roseanne cash britney spears oops i did it again modern science bob dylan wow and again a ton of chart topping rock and roll acts go check him out if you guys haven't heard of him so kevin's studio here in las vegas is called the hideout so here's just a few clients that have worked at the hideout studio chainsmokers corey taylor dead disturbed dj mustard florida future gladys knight jeff beck lil wayne mike tyson ray j rick ross ron dante sam riddle cisco skillet smash mouth summer walker sway lee tech nine the voice martina mcbride billy gibbons and wiz khalifa so shout out to zoe and kevin for arranging this while i'm out here and letting me come shoot this so much fun you guys are amazing don't forget to of course smash the like button for this beautiful set at my wife's grandmother's house and letting me shoot this video in here while i eat macaroni and cheese and thank you to kevin and zoe and everyone at the hideout for having me over you guys are awesome links for all their stuff down in the description and without further ado let's go check out kevin's studio at the hideout i'm just kidding i'm still eating this it's really hot though so welcome to the hideout lobby this is kind of the office portion of it where we have you know different guys you got a music teacher here that teaches guitar we have we used to have a startup company that ran places here we had another guy had a studio in the back you know little private rooms a photographer but generally it's a place to hang where staff and even artists can just come here and kind of get away from the other other side this is the older section so i got to vegas in 2005 and they were just building this place meaning that this part was built but they were building that place that i'll show you in a second and so there's four studios here basically this is c this is my son's lounge usually there's a table here with a little editing system but um that's where his clients kind of hang out when they're not bugging him this is his main studio these back rooms are always my more favorite rooms because that's where all the magic is you know a collection of guitars this is one one of three this is jason hook special only only three of these made so i'm very proud of that this is given to me by friends got an upside down canadian flag i like these backgrounds we don't always you know show that stuff and obviously for various reasons this is the studio room for again this is studio c just to throw down ideas just an electronic kit there so keynes my son kane mostly works in c and it's the only studio that has a has a window as well so they had this studio going while they were building the other three studios in in the back you know this is kind of more kane's i mean we do rant it out but it's mostly kane's private room where he does all his artists stuff but he was smarter than me so when we when we bought the place i chose the big boy room yeah which you'll see in a second he chose this one which is more awesome really because he doesn't have to tear stuff down every night whereas my room is granted that's clarophonic yeah that's some awesome vk awesome stuff ubk also has plugins but it's basically kush audio is is uh is a company a lot of the stuff he just incorporates into his his insert pro tools sessions for his mixes and he just has a little favorite this is the oven that's pretty amazing too i mean this this is kind of a little more like when we used to have a home studio happening because everything's hooked up and ready to go and he just reach over here and do the same things or he's got his guitar pedals and it's all kind of quick and easy versus what's become more of a commercial rooms in the back camper all the synths so is he doing a lot of pre-production and like main production too he does everything everything so he's all in on the slate he's a big slate fan have you used these i haven't used the raven much no cane digs it you know admire sound or do you have these in each room so we have a few sets of these this is kind of an older like i think it's probably developed in the 80s i used to work for a producer named mutt lang and so he used to have these in his edit room i spent a lot of time in his edit room uh working on them so i got really used to them and it's kind of i mean for for me it's a great speaker kind of like a glorified ns10 the mks are also a good mixed speaker that we use but this is kane's choice you know when he works and there's some subs in the back and all right so that was c now tell me a little bit about some of the stuff you're working on here well this wall's canes well kane helped me out at an early age even when i was working for matt kane would do some stuff for fermat too these are sort of his cl his claim to fame of stuff he's worked on he mixed that zombie song for bad bad wolves helped me on all the disturbed stuff the five finger death death punch aussie most of these records we've either done here or at my previous hideout studio or in some cases in my house too war is the answer i did at my house i mean honestly we had ozzy at that house too and it was funny because i i just had to do a quick a quick over overdub for him so he came in got his vocal done and then i was just kind of nosing through the session and then i could hear all this giggling out in the main room and open my door and here's kane my son and an ozzy watching super bad those are moments you chalk up in your memory as you know much more fun and much more memorable than most of the time that were spent there got a little bit of a conference room so in record company guys and management guys come they can take the artist in here and they're not bugging me small little wall of fame here of different people one of the all-time greats full kitchen again the place is fairly big like we got 13 and a half thousand square feet so lots of times artists want some catered food or they bring families and whatever and you know there's actually a full bar back there too in the closet let's go to the fun stuff lounge for like every studio's got its own lounge and a little hangout place and i i really like that too because if people got a phone make business calls or phone their families or whatever they need privacy and it's so nice to have the space for all the the separate rooms too like that is and they're all pretty comfortable my wife can kenny she designed a lot of these things as far as you know the layouts and the furniture and stuff so so that's the lounge for studio b which is mostly where i work so this is getting to my corner of the of the building so this is a little more my claim to fame although it does go around the corner and into the next hallway too we literally just had gene simmons in here yesterday it was unexpected joy i turned around in my studio and he was there he came for a tour shania twain yeah that that was brilliant wow i didn't realize it was so such an eclectic well i mean those were not as producers those were engineers engineering uh credits when i worked for another producer wow this record record did pretty well yeah i mean i only did one track on that and you know that was my first job with mutt that's kind of how it all started and then as i started to to produce i mean i was always kind of more of a rock guy because this is my youth you know as i started producing and not just working for other people then i was able to do what i wanted to do so this is studio b this is mostly where i work and my clients work this is the second biggest room you know if i'm just editing or something like that or just kind of even even guitar playing i can you know there's other rooms i can take amps into and it's a great sounding room more importantly i mean the studio when they built it like i i didn't build it i bought it about five years ago i was around when they built it yeah and i was able to tour while they were building it so i know intimately i knew the people building that the friends of mine now you know they really did it right it's one of the it's kind of like an old school studio in a new world and every room has cut concrete foundation so there's no bleed i don't know how many layers of drywall and gaps in between walls and i mean they really didn't spare any expense you know i mean i came here in 2005 looking for work i wouldn't come here to see if i could buy the place i was just saying can you give me a job and um they didn't but that'd be a lesson but i could see the ownership dropped from five people to four people to three people to two people and along that way i kept saying let me know if you want to sell first of all first of all i got so so busy i just wanted to lease it all i don't want your name your branding anything that i just want the building and it gave me some insane price that i could never afford but i said well i don't want to do it like that and then i built another studio in town but i said if you're ever interested in selling let me know i had no money in my bank account i had no way to pay for it nobody was going to give me a loan but you know you plant those seeds all right so ssl this is an 8 channel 9 9k you know i mean as far as the analog ssl boards goes this is this is the big dog this is the best one this oh yeah the one dr dre uses and he can use anything it gets used a little less these days than maybe in years past you know what a lot of people just rent studio time to come in here and play their stems through it pop r b rock they come in here they spread their tracks out here and even as zero fader yet they put the bus compressor on they patch into the unfair job oh yes there's amazing amounts of gear in this place both vintage and modern it's nice this this has actually an e eq on it too so you can have either the nine tank you or the switch so we got some tubetech all the classics 1176 oh the yuris those are my favorite those la3s are pretty much every rock vocal i've ever done here i've been seeing a lot of these lately the bae 312's and these are great too this is this would be a room that you're using for post drum tracking mixing and kind of no i've done drums in fact this is my favorite room to do drums and i'll tell you why it's really going yeah i've tracked everything here mixed it here this is my mixing room i mean this is not a huge room the way i would compare two is like you know if you have a little speaker and put into a small room it sounds much bigger than it does into a big room and so when the drums were in here they all sound pretty warm and pretty fat and obviously it's a pretty dead room too so not the best for my style of drumming what i have is also this with a tv in it now but if i'm tracking drums oddly enough you know there's a little bit of height there and i stick a stereo mic in there shut the door and that becomes kind of the room room tone it's surprisingly big i mean you can press that i mean garbage cans well that's for my proprietary snare that's another little trick to put a room mic inside there or to just hit them the great thing these days is there's no rules you can do whatever you want i mean i've had when i had disturbed in here we had drums set up here as well as we were doing some acoustic songs and so you know dan be over here with his acoustic have a mic in the middle for for david mike's kid in the side and they could they were tracking live real quick what are these boxes i haven't seen these before that's just a ethernet uh headphone monitor analog conversion box in there that has 20 24 channels on it you can program each of the things you can either use the screen or the or the knobs and talk back is here you press that and you turn the volume up i was just doing vocals you got the mix here and vocals and so they got the the old me you know they want to turn their vocal up they turn me up they want to turn their mix up they tag team as well so uh you can have a whole pile of mixes and with everybody controlling their own and sometimes it's different song to song or sure even one section one guy needs a cue so he'll just set it up and turn it up and down so these are for people watching they're called live mix by digital audio labs do you want to go into d first then we'll come back to a sure that's a but we're going to go to d [Music] so this is a little smaller writing editing but also a mixing room you know the good thing about coming to studio like this that has so many rooms is that you can pay for the appropriate room so obviously a which we're still going to be going into that's you know the big room lots of space lots of iso boost that's going to cost you a little bit more than say this room but you can start with your drum beds in there don't even have to pull your drive you can just transfer your files over to here pitch up in here and it's half as much money as what the big big room room is and i mean to do vocals this is all you i really really need it was designed as a mastering room much more valuable to us as an additional room when i was telling you about my home studio this was the preamp the mercenary edition of the 737 that i used for vocals on almost every record of it i ever ever made there until i got here now i have a i have the uta stuff and i use that but i got to point this out this is like the best version in my opinion of the ssl bus compressor the g384 that thing is so banging little fun fact on this one vinnie paul gave me this he brought it into my old studio one day and i guess he had two ns10s barefoots and this is approximately the size of my old studio can control room too so i'm very comfortable in here it's like you know it's a little different than the bigger rooms too because people are more are closer to you it seems a little friendlier i mean i've had a lot a lot of people in here and this is kind of like a cloud but it's like built into the ceiling exactly yeah there is an online video that they alerted me to that they had made when they built this place and it will show you i believe above these when you're mixing in here i mean it really does sound as amazing as any studio i've been and this is kind of like just stock when you book the room yeah every room has you know a selection of gear and then but everything else is available too usually too like there's no fair child in here but when i come in here i bring that unfair child in here it's just it's on rollers on it yeah and that's my baby and that's the beauty of about a place this big too i mean you can name a mic i mean chances are you've got it shout out h3000 ultra harmonizer fantastic effects this is like again one of my favorite rooms this is like the guts where all the fun fun stuff is and we have have a regular tech here that can fix anything and every everything too evans is a legendary guy used to work at the power station for i don't know 20 years or something like that there you go you got the private queues and if you like those more you can use use those i mean because of the size of the room you want to have an old 1064 you can come come get it and if it doesn't work we got a full tech bench here too so again things you can't have in your house right got an organ a b3 there things like that like musical instruments that can't always have in your garage and sure into the house so as a drummer myself i know you're a drummer you know the irony of life is that when i needed them i could never afford anything i used to have to play with sticks that were so beat up that my fingers would start start bleeding you know now that i can have anything i don't play it anymore but yeah you know we like to have one of every decent snare my favorite one is the black beauty not not that one but this one i got two black beauties but this is mine i bought that in the in the 80s this is my first good drama i ever bought the rhonda net snare is also one of my faves too if i set up any drums these will always be the first snares but you know there's a bell brass around here somewhere i got vinnie paul's drum that i a band just used recent recently he had given me this just another thing that vinnie gave he was a very generous person this is an extra cool ferchie rototom snare have you ever seen this and just wind it which is great for a gigging drummer because you know you can change it per person it's not on a stand but you can even do it in mid sound so it kind of dives except the other way you know same thing with the kick drums you want 18 we got 18. you want 20 we got 20. you want 22. you got 22. then of course my drumming friends in town too they have you know selection we even got the funk kit all ready to go single headed collection of cymbals and they have the titanium tops here too and you can mix and match i mean a lot i've done you know the call it the ugly kit so when you book time can you can you like rent the kits anybody can use anything here get the old flip top b15 right yeah yeah evh wagner yeah deluxe we don't we don't have a whole pile of guitar apps but we got the important ones got to point this out i noticed this one of the first things i did at east west was set up the organization system and labeling system for the mics and this is the perfect language to use tons and tons of mics you know it's probably like you might have had at east west where we have a checkout system for microphones yeah so we always know where they are at any given time and yeah we've been really lucky here that very respectful clients very great engineers that very rarely does anything get wrecked or ruined or oh yeah and then all the all the real good mics are in here oh this is one of my favorite the the c37 so that's the tube version right yep it's amazing to have the stuff that i only used to see in my modeler plugins all right we'll go into a a lounge we've had so many band pictures here promos done here in the corner and you know and this this is an actual um yeah i mean my wife would know all the all the did those designers and another closet here with oh yeah and more guitars so is this like a sound lock slash sometimes booth this is where i do most vocals when i'm in this room i don't know if your camera will be able to shoot through but there's basically a line of sight of like one two three four rooms fully beautiful treated uh booth diffuser and then this the biggest window i've ever seen in a booth okay so this we're in this vocal booth that's the control room teaser through the control room huge tracking room and then there's more booths in that track here we'll go down there too oh my gosh check it out 96 channel console another ssl duality this is the uh i think the largest console they make and again gear floats in floats out into other other rooms these are great the millennia yeah got a rock of the bees at the end there too so okay so you got two over here and then eight count there's a bunch of 16 in total but we always have two in each room because it's pretty popular vocal preamp i mean to be quite honest it's my it's my drum drum preview so yeah if i'm doing it in b we'll just push the rocks over into b and we'll but they usually live in a here just because most of the time people are recording drums and full bands here la2 tube tick dbx these are great there you go there's number two you want analog we got it just make sure you put nothing on top of the machine sure yeah including cables yeah these ocean ways are freaking massive are those 12s on the bottom no those are 18. 18 oh my god and we were actually uh ordering more got the kemper do you like these kempers yeah i do yeah those are sweet i use them them a lot i mean in fact for me it's sometimes about the ease of it of you know because the way i produce records it's very circular so we just get the rough stuff down immediately but that ends up a lot of times being the main tracks and sometimes you just got to go punch in a couple chords or change a section around and if i have to take too many pictures of the amp and the mic placement and all that it just becomes more of a make work project oh wow [Music] it's actually pretty impressive when you get like a whole band set up here and when i first got here carl santana would would book the place out and he likes he's old school he likes to do it live and he has a whole band set up here across the whole place he sits in the middle and he can direct traffic from from the control room and lots of iso boosts we have two different kinds this is kind of a dead booth usually we put the guitar amps in here just so they're isolated again yeah completely awesome and then even the piano we can wheel that out into the main room the the doors are exactly wide enough to come accommodate the piano this is a c7 and again cool thing about this you'll want to take some yeah what the hell the sugar cube wall so we call this the hard room it's a little harder sounding with hard surfaces tile floor we've recorded piano in here a lot of times we've done drums in here a lot of times it all sounds sounds cool and all those little uneven services really help i don't even know what what is it like a rock i guess like some sort of camera yes i don't know if you've ever used uh the internet before but the comment section is where the experts are so they'll let us know yeah yeah the experts a little bit they'll tell me so do these open up oh this is a this is like uh that's a little piezo microphone pdm wow so they're always hooked up and ready to go so when you're in a you can just hit the button to listen to what's going on in case you don't have mic set up yet oh yeah there's speakers up here too just quick and easy don't put your snare there put it out the other side your cymbals are too high don't need that many symbols take away six of those drums you know those kind of kind of comments so yeah it's great we've had strings in here you've had uh choirs i don't even know what those things are called up there but they're awesome they're actually pretty easily taken down too so i've taken them down for a project once i never like a totally dead room yeah yeah i mean i do like a totally dead room with new vocals or acoustics or something like that but if you're doing drums or ambient type things you kind of need a little bit of room vibe too so so they're again they're reflective without being all fluttery and you know i'm not a technical expert so i can't tell you i think that's the majority of the studio other than the the networking room and the machine rooms and stuff like that you guys are here in las vegas and if somebody wants to you know book some time here they just hit you up on the website is that the best place the website has all the info on it the hideout lv.com follow you on social media all the instagram and all that google hideout las vegas and you'll find everything that you need yeah i mean it's available we get we get every level of client from you know we've had guys calling from literally from jail they're getting out the next day and they're booking their time because they've been able to spend a lot of time writing their lyrics any fun new records coming out we should know about i mean there's so many people that come through here i and a lot of times i don't even know who's here kane's got a different client in his his room and your son kane churco people could follow him as well yeah you personal on instagram and all that stuff we're all on there i mean my my kids are all better at it than me i hate the social medias yeah well thank you again so much you know i understand i've literally talked to you like yesterday or something in the day before yeah i really appreciate you letting me come in here and do this and i hope that people find some some kind of value out of this and yeah i've enjoyed watching your channel thank you i appreciate it all right well i'll get out of here everyone go give them follow links down in the description and uh i'll see in the next video so you know what i love about sweetwater they partner with me on these videos to you know make this possible they really allowed me to take this channel to the next level but unlike a lot of companies they don't give me talking points in fact they have essentially empowered me to make the exact videos that i want to so with that being said i'm going to go ahead and peruse sweetwater here and see if i can find the things that i really want to check out neve of course 33609 oh yeah if you guys haven't used this compressor this is probably one of the most interesting compressors to me right now and i would love to check this out okay what else next one 1176. yeah those are the two coolest things to me i don't know what do you think let me know down in the comments if you have any cool suggestions of things that i should check out from sweetwater these are the things that i think are very very cool and i can really only make videos about things that i think are cool but i'm open to checking out some new stuff so if you have any great ideas let me know down in the comments and i wouldn't be able to do that without sweetwater so thank you sweetwater for sponsoring the video obviously use sweetwater if you're gonna buy some gear they're great [Music] oh
